One of the cutest places to visit on Whyte! Their pastries are to die for! I especially love the notes in the walls and the bookshelf! The paintings by Ratchet Gold are amazing as well!
16 August 2023 6:36
Great atmosphere, good coffee. Table out front on Whyte Ave in the summer! Free Hi-Fi lots of university people lots of desserts.
10 August 2023 23:53
I got violently ill tonight after eating here - literally threw up for hours on end. Please be more careful with your “gluten free” products as they are clearly not. Please also educate staff to tell customers the correct info when they ask/order with gluten allergies.

Awesome cafe on Whyte ave in terms of food and coffees and also they have plenty of gluten- free and vegan dessert options which is really nice. And customer service was great, very friendly staff!

I was at this place on Friday morning (August 4th) with my friends.

The atmosphere is great here. However, when I ordered a piece of caramel banana cake I realized that it wasn't fresh!
You should have advertised your almost unrefreshed cakes on the app “Too good to go” the day before and reduced the price!
It's unfair due to your regular customers.
I believe you'll take measures regarding food!

A beautiful Cafe! Delicious desserts and beverages, and the baristas are all so fantastic!

Manager is creepy, desserts are mediocre and overpriced. After spending around $60 on just cake and drinks between the four of us, we went to the washroom. Manager stood outside the washroom while we waited patiently for each to go in and out, and stared us down the whole time, saying nothing but being obviously strange. Could honestly buy a whole cake for the same price and it would taste better. Was so excited to support a local cafe, but won’t be back. The two stars are for the gelato and the girl behind the counter, which were nice.

The atmosphere is really nice and the staff are very friendly. My food and coffee wasn't my favourite though. My panini needed more ingrediants, it was a bit sad for the price, and my oat latte was weak and kind of watery. It's a cute place though, I'll give it another try.

Block 1912, iconic coffeehouse on Whyte holds so many memories of joyous playful times etched firmly in my mind. Whilst the layout and decor has altered in accordance with #Covid regulations, everything about it is is as extraordinary as ever. Staff most pleasant and serving with a smile! QR code and photo ID as per regulations. Highly recommended given Starbucks and Second Cup at the corner shuttered.and a good, comfy spot for a meet up on Whyte.library is an excellent addition
08 December 2021 21:24
Desserts seem pricey (for the working poor), but the selection and offerings are divine and the atmosphere cozy and trendy. Highly recommended.
29 November 2021 20:45
This place refuses to be accessable to those with disabilties that require them to be in a wheelchair or walker. There is a 10 inch stoop that they will not turn into a ramp.
Not for me man.
16 November 2021 2:27
Great food and hand made selection of desert and drinks. The sitting areas are varied to accommodate groups or just a two person. From cosy to on the terrace definatly will be going back.
14 November 2021 19:40
Decent food, expensive price. This place didn't quite exceed my expectations, but I still appreciate coming here regardless. The ambience in this cafe is nice and cozy, however I wouldn't really recommend this for those who need to study since there are a lot of chitchatting going on around (unless, of course, if you are okay with that). Very welcoming staff and the place is neat too.
19 October 2021 4:07
Excellent space to grab a bite, study or socialize. Rustic with a great selection of desserts and eats.
15 October 2021 1:15
UPDATE: Since I last visited pre-pandemic, the drinks are awful now. The cocktails and coffee are terrible now, although the desserts are still great. Still very atmospheric.

OLD:
Lovely atmosphere, desserts, and coffee
23 September 2021 12:31
I stopped by here & had a piece of cake & it was dry & very pricey not worth it. I wouldn't go back to this place.
21 September 2021 18:59
Always pleased with the iced americanos I get from there. They sell alcoholic beverages as well. Always a bunch of yummy looking pieces of cake that I have yet to try. Lots of seating, vibrant ambiance.
04 September 2021 19:45
Very nice ambience for a cafe on Whyte. However, despite the desserts being visually stunning, they are really not good. They are on par with, or even worse than store bought sweets. Pictured is my “panna cotta” that had the stiff consistency of jello. However, their drinks are of much better quality. The matcha latte and coffee was great.
27 August 2021 20:34
As for standard coffee, I do think it is overpriced *for the quality*. Nothing about the coffee was necessarily deserving of its price point. Definitely not something you’d go to daily. But the vibes are there and it’s a cool hangout spot for your friends to chat and chill out. Plus, the hours are amazing for those night owls who actually do want coffee after 6.
23 August 2021 2:29
Oh man the ambience of this place is amazing. It has a nook where one can drink their coffee and read a book. The place is eccentric. It's definitely not a place you would see regularly, but is for sure needed.
19 August 2021 10:36
Lovely place for a dessert and coffee with hubby this evening. I've wanted to come for a while now and it did not disappoint. Will be back with clients in the future.
18 August 2021 3:43
Cool place to sit down and chat, but can sometimes get a bit hectic with all the Whyte Ave chaos going on.
05 August 2021 4:01
Possibly the best chai latte I've had. Very smooth flavor. Also cool atmosphere and quick service! 10/10 would recommend
03 August 2021 14:12
I ordered the Turkey Brie Apple sandwich. Very disappointed. The turkey was sliced processed turkey, and there was next to no Brie on the sandwich. I did call and speak with someone about it, and they very generously gave me another meal for no charge. I ordered the herb crusted chicken pot pie and Greek salad. I also ordered the Chocolate Marquise which is extremely delicious and decadent. If it weren't for the initial sandwich, I probably would have given five stars. They addressed my concern very kindly and professionally.

Block 1912 is a Whyte Ave fixture; amazing ambiance and space for the younger, student crowd. It's a great place to work, or chat with friends; and the gelato and cakes bar have a very European feel that sets them apart. One of my favs.
10 June 2021 8:31
I initially went to block 1912 to study and fell in love with the drinks! The ambiance is unmatched and it really reminds me of a reading nook.it is slightly dark, but it is great for chatting with friends and having a great coffee.
28 April 2021 16:30
Nice place for coffee on white ave.

One downside is I found the pastries quite expensive compared to other spots in the city eg la Boule, dutchess etc.
27 April 2021 14:19
After hearing many positive things about Block 1912, we decided to check it out ourselves!

The place has a relaxing aesthetic and the vibe is very calm. We really enjoyed their selection of cakes (the sour cherry cake is phenomenal) and their coffee had a pleasant taste as well. Their menu ranges from coffee to Italian soda, and they offer lunch type food as well.

Take notes boys: take your girl on a cute coffee date and she will love it here. Will definitely be returning in the near future.
22 April 2021 0:38
Nice place to have a coffee/tea and visit or sit and work. They have a huge selection of desserts that looked amazing. There is a small food menu that looked interesting, I was just there for a tea so I can't speak to the quality of the food, but I would definitely go back and try it out another time
20 April 2021 6:32
I was a barista for 5 years in a number of cafes, including starbucks.although being a beautiful cafe with a great ambience and location, the prices are astronomical for the product, the quality of which in my opinion does not exceed any of their competitors.a large london fog for example (which is typically part steamed milk, part water, an earl grey tea bag and sweetener of some kind) comes to about $7 after tax.a cup of tea is about $4.even their pastries are much pricier than some of the specialty bakeries in the city such as la boule or duchess.i understand mark up and needing to make a profit from the products you are buying, but this is over the top.
12 February 2021 3:18
Such a cute place by whyte ave! I have been there once, the dessert was really good! I want to go back soon:)
03 February 2021 16:16
Beautiful place, delicious food and drinks, they asked me if I wanted a dairy substitute without me even asking, i loved it!
18 January 2021 6:58
Was sold old cake here and was refused to have it replaced even though the worker admitted to it being older than three days.
12 January 2021 22:23
I didn't think we had places like this in Edmonton. The inside very warm and cozy. They have boardgames, books, and live music. I had lavender cake and a coco, and they were delicious! Reminds me of a NYC cafe.
21 December 2020 16:20
Please make the blueberry lemon curd dessert back! It was so good, we came back 3 times to get it after that and it was never on the menu: (
The one time we did get it though it was amazing! Great experience
21 December 2020 0:53
Cheerful little cafe with a great drink selection - including wine! Their food is also very tasty. Highly recommend the smoked salmon bagel! Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
15 December 2020 10:36
Their lavender fogs are to die for, the desserts are always exciting and tasty, and great vibes for just chilling or studying! Definitely one of my favorite local businesses!
14 February 2019 17:52
Finally got the time to visit this renowned cafe for its bakery goods and hot chocolate in edmonton. All my excitement started fading when i finally reached the cafe. To started with, tables were not clean properly with crumbs lying on them.
Somehow we managed to get the somewhat clean table. Even washrooms were so unhygienic that you can’t think of using them again.
Coming to order, i read a lot about their hot chocolate that it is best in town but unfortunately it didn’t taste wow or something different. But i liked the block 1912 tiramisu slice which saved my visit here.
Well, my visit filled with disappointment will not let me to come here soon anytime.
08 February 2019 23:34
I loved the vibe of this place. They have a small library of sorts, where you can take a book and leave a book. Also, there's a gender neutral bathroom! It was very queer and trans friendly, and the architecture is well taken care of and stunning! I tried the lavender latte, and it was delicious!
04 February 2019 4:38
I love the ambiance, very warm, lots of earthy tones, but it doesn't feel dated.

Couple hangups though.
1. It's cramped. Quite cramped
2. It's noisy
3. Single door setup, so in the winter, the front half of the store freezes anytime the door opens.
4. I've only had the oreo cheesecake (unusually dense.) and the banana bread almond cake (very dry, couldn't finish) and I wasn't all that impressed

However their drinks do go down well. The Chocolate Ganache Latte or whatever it's called, was really well done.

And thats my 2 cents

Pretty good little cafe. Decent cappuccino and fairly large piece of cake. Prices are reasonable. Atmosphere is good, but is very student-y / filled with people "working" on their laptops.
25 December 2018 19:57
Decent coffee. Lazy staff. Talked amongst thelves the whole time. Customer is background noise to their quacking gossip. Need to clean. Very dirty.
23 December 2018 15:26
Great space, larger than most coffee cafes. If you like ambient noise this could be a good place to study. From what I saw there is an outlet on the upper level, back of cafe. (The lighting is somewhat dimmed though)

My Irish coffee was tasty - but I'm not sure how you can mess it up. The whipped cream tasted fresh and made in house.

Tiramisu cake tasted store bought and with that fridge taste.

I would come here again because of the space, but probably elsewhere for better pastries.

Block 1912 cafe is absolutely stunning.once you step foot into the cafe, you already feel comfy, that cafe vibe.in the store, the place is furnished with a vintage feel. There’s couches and chairs around, and it adds an area to read books (if you don’t have books, there are some provided in the cafe. A mini library).
you can work in the cafe, it’s a chill atmosphere.although, the prices can be slightly high, but the coffee is great quality.there are also fairy lights scattered across the ceiling, and paintings to welcome you in.cashiers and workers are extremely nice and sweet, they will help with anything.so, buy your coffee and enjoy!:)
18 December 2018 5:36
Block 1912 is a big room. It is a long walk to the counter to order.

However, do not be intimidated and strut to the counter and order an Oreo Chocolate chip cookie.

Because it is a damn good cookie.

I also got an americano almond milk misto. A bad choice. Because it was ho hum.

This is why the three stars. The coffee was below average.

The cup was filled to the brim and was spilling before I even picked it up.

Some might say that this is knit picking. However a cafe must ultimately be judged on its coffee service and it was sorely lacking.

With that said, it was an extraordinarily good cookie and the rest of the baking looked amazing. Truly.

A great place to read the VUE Weekly, do a little crossword and eat treats. Maybe order a tea instead.

Thank you

Awesome, awesome spot. Grrat service.comfy atmosphere. Amaaaazing cakes. Glad i checked it out. Will totally go again. Top notch all around.
08 December 2018 1:36
The desserts are beautiful and sopiscated but I find time and time again their taste doesn't live up to their look. I've had their ice cream on a waffle cone, not bad, ruined though by the fact that my cashier who just handled cash also handled my food without hand washing in between or at least making a better effort of not touching the food. Almost every time I've been there I've noticed fruit flies in the dessert display case. I want to love this place, especially since its much needed renovation. Great ambience, I'm just not sold on their desserts -what they're supposedly known for.much better places in the city.
08 December 2018 1:25
I went there to relax not stand in long line ups for each of the two coffees I drank. Standing around waiting made for an awkward start to and awkward date. Wouldn't be my top pick next time.
04 December 2018 4:07
Been here several times, and probably won't be coming back. First off, they basically charge $1 for hot water as espresso is 2.50 and an Americano (espresso + hot water) is 3.50, so that's disappointing in and of itself. Most cafés would charge maybe 50 cents more (if that). Desserts options are plentiful and quite good, but also pricey.

Today they asked if we wanted to stay or go, and we replied 'stay', with the expectation that we'd receive our drinks in a ceramic cup. They made our drinks and when they called us up I realized they used 'to-go' cups. I asked them what the reason for that is, and the worker said they're 'all out' of cups (meaning they needed to put them through the dishwasher). I'm really disappointed in this and would have happily waited another 5-10 minutes for my coffee if they took the time to wash the cups and use their sustainable option instead of a single-use disposable paper cup. Alternatively, they could have simply mentioned they were out of clean cups and then we could at least have decided whether we were willing to use a disposable cup or not, rather than be asked if we wanted to stay which implies that a reusable cup will be used. Looks like they also use plastic straws, while many other local cafés are straw-free, or at least using paper/biodegradable straws.

Will likely not return if I'm in the area (which is quite often) and seek out alternative, more sustainability-minded cafés. Am disappointed as it's an otherwise nice place to have a coffee.
16 October 2018 12:12
Pricey.but also decadent.

Hard to get your coffee here with out a little something sweet on the side. Between gelato and an array of baked goodies there is lots of choose from.

Coffee is nothing to complain about, and they make a very good (if a little sweet) London Fog. Sweet treats have been hit or miss, some very tasty, others pretty *meh* - but all are on the pricey side so choose carefully.

Atmosphere is the highlight here with brick walls, a leave-one-take-one bookshelf, and edison light bulbs throughout.

It is my favorite place in whyte ave, staff are super friendly.we can stay outside in summer, kids friendly:)
