Drive across the city after they told me walks ins were fine for exotics and nobody there to actually meet with me. Poor animals losing adoption opportunities due to lack of staff.
My grade 5 students recently attended a field trip to the Calgary Humane Society. We did the reptile program and it was great! Nebila was fantastic and spoke to my students about the work that Calgary Humane Society does with animals as well as the importance of doing research before adopting a pet. We were able to see some of the animals as well. My students continuously told me how much fun they had and keep asking me to go back. Such a great experience!
They only care about pets they can more money off of in adopting. Its a shameful company that only cares for the lives of dogs and cats. Other animals are ignored and left to die. Smalls and reptiles deserve just as much protection. The SPCA in BC at least takes all cases seriously.
We got our baby boy from here! The process can be a little daunting but they are looking for the best owners for the animals ensuring they care who these animals are going to.
I have 3 dogs from 3 different rescues and this was by far the absolute best!
We had a wonderful experience at CHS. The staff is kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. It's a bit of a kitten galore it seems now, but there are also many adult and mature cats who need a loving home and deserve to be spoiled rotten. Please do consider them! We just adopted Ginger yesterday; a beautiful older boy who is the fluffiest, cutest, sweetest, and kindest soul. We are completely heels over head about him!
We adopted Yinyang, now named Abby about a month ago. She is a very loving cat! She moved in with our crew of 12 cats (2kittens) and 2 dogs as if it was her normal life. She is very food motivated. Loves wet food to go with her kibble. She loves spending her days on the front catio enjoying the fresh air and lounging on the love seat. She has picked the leather recliner in the living room as her other favourite resting spot. She gets pretty excited when you call her name and comes running for pets. We love her very much!
Attended the Saturday morning Puppy Club with my new Puppy. Week one he was very nervous. The staff and volunteers stayed late and gave my puppy some extra love and encouragement. Week 2 to week 5 he loved the class. A great way for him to socialize with other puppies. The volunteers and staff were great. Memorized my puppy's name (along with the names of the other ~ 8 puppies in class) and treated each puppy individually. We loved it so much we signed up for a Sunday class too. Highly recommended for a new puppy. Thanks Calgary Humane Society!
I adopted Darwin from the Calgary Humane Society and honestly love him so much. He has made my life so much happier (and healthier!). I had such a great experience adopting him. I was SO impressed with the facilities and the way the animals were treated, you can tell the staff care so much about them. Brianna (I THINK!) was awesome, she introduced me to Darwin and throughly went through everything I would need to know about him. I would recommend anyone looking to adopt to go there, the staff are absolute angels. I am so thankful for Darwin!
Calgary is lucky to have this amazing resource. Lead by truly compassionate animal professionals, they have to make some of the hardest decisions every day. They don't carry that responsibility lightly and are advocates for animals and supportive of their humans.
Wonderful animal shelter with a "no kill" mandate for all guests! I donate yearly to the organization and feel that my money is going to the right places. Excellent to see a place for transitions for animals so well run and local here in Calgary!
Got our furry friend Mr. Fred. Love at first sight! Warmed up to our apartment as soon as we brought him home! Our helper at the Society was an amazing lady from London. Great job!
While I appreciate they care about animals, they take some things too far. They aren’t very informed on different types of animal care, and when they receive “complaints” they think they can do what ever they want. Not all complaints are legitimate but it sure makes animals distraught when taken from their owners wrongfully, or when pet stores are wrongfully harassed. Take a look at the stores that were closed down in Calgary. Honestly does more harm than good. They aren’t equipped to take care of exotics but will remove them from stores just because they can.
I'm really disappointed in the way that the rules are made I had a discussion about a week ago spoke to a few of the ladies one who answered the phone the other that is more inclined to give me more information by the end of my conversation I was simply told that it would be there was no help to neuter the cat that I saved from being hit by a car I let them know that I was a senior on a low budget old age pension but I'd really would like to get the best for the cat u know shots health check ect they said they can't help me take the cat to the vet I explained I simply couldn't afford to I asked them do I have to abandon the kitten for u to help they nicely said if I cat afford to take care of a cat then maybe I should not have one and did I want them to come get the cat I just started crying I asked about the donation they receive doesn't that help what is wrong with the rules we never hear about I'm so upset so just wanted to share
We have adopted from the Calgary Humane Society twice, and both times were a delight. They offer fantastic advice and support, and make the whole adoption process so easy and enjoyable. They are giving pets a second chance by find them loving forever homes.
I recently adopted two kittens from the CHS. They are cuter than I could have dreamed and will keep me and each other in the best company. I am so grateful that the CHS is there to rescue animals and help find forever homes for them. Heidi
So instead of helping people that just need help for while a safe place for there pets. Only people who in my opinion can't care for them qaulify yet people who try hard don't? The program is to help yet doesnt help I was flat out told to pretty much surrender my pet instead of helping me use there pet keeping program? So you'd rather profit off my situation by adopting out my animals or getting funding for there admittance then help them stay home? I'm severely disappointed in the older woman who answered phone was obviously uneducated had no compassion and should consider differant line of work with a would like that if could do no stars I'd put -2 and suggest any other shelter for help.
So whole experience is great, staff is excellent they walk you through the whole process and I found the perfect cat. Got cat out of box to discover missing parts, front slicers/nuts and definitely some screws have come loose. For a 12 year old runs great (mostly to steal your burger) and purrs like a porche. Best decision ever! Love my senior kitty and all his quirks. Life restarts at any age adopt a senior!
Started off with fostering, ended up adopting the first dog we fostered. The staff was great. The process was simple and communication with Calgary Humane Society was easy and effective. We ended up with a great pet.
Worked with them when they found my cat and when I adopted my second cat they're very patient and respectful made things easy for me both times and from my time there the animals were very well treated definitely recommended them if your looking to adopt!
We adopted a four year old tabby female, Luna. Right from my first contact with CHS I had a good feeling that we were going home with a kitty. Everyone we spoke to was very professional and friendly and really made the adoption process easy. Thank you so much.
Calgary Humane Society does such wonderful work, and are always a pleasure to deal with. We have adopted 2 cats from them and they are always a delight (and the cats are too!). Their work must be so difficult, but they do it so well.
My only negative thing to say is I wish I could take all the animals home. Give an animal a second chance and adopt today. I rescued the cutest, silliest little pittie puppy girl here 8 years ago but I strongly believe that she rescued me. This look says it all.
Due to Visitation restrictions I have haven't been to Shelter since Mid 2020. I do know that the staff here are an Amazing group of people. We will be Adopting another pet soon as our Cat has passed away.
I look forward to bringing my wife and Daughter when the restrictions are lifted.
Me and my sister were surrendering our two cats and the whole thing was a bit of a hassle. The entrance was locked and we didn't have a phone to call in. After waiting about 10 minutes with no response, we kinda ended up breaking our way in. After we found a staff member, we told her we were here to surrender our cats. She gave us two crates two put our pets into and waited at the door for us. She took them, shut the door, and that was it.
Just a note to staff that are responsible for taking in surrendered pets: Allow owners to share a moment with their pets. The staff member we interacted with was too nonchalant with the whole situation. I feel she doesn't recognize the relation an owner has with their pets which I feel is necessary in the surrendering process.
It also looked like prison in there. I just hope the looks of the place doesn't translate to the care they provide for their animals.
Do NOT get a dog from the Calgary SPCA. Our last 2 adoptions (2 German Shepard dogs over a 10 year period) both had very serious health issues. The SPCA's vet said both dogs were healthy and no issues. Over the years, the dogs have cost us a fortune in vet bills and heart-ache. As a result of our experience, we will NEVER own a dog again; especially, not from the SPCA.
The staff here are amazing and were very patient! We spent around five hours here and we were able to go home with the perfect cat at the end of the day.
I have taken a class as well as some private training and it was all very helpful. My dog is a bit of a challenge sometimes but I feel very supported (and know I will continue to be supported).
My dog, Maggie, is very timid and often reacts, negatively, to other dogs. She lunges at them and barks. Not very friendly and awfully embarrassing! My vet suggested I take the Reactive Rover class at the Calgary Humane Society, which I did. Cheryl, our instructor, was exceptional. She was delightfully encouraging, gave valuable tips, and provided us with plenty of one on one training. I liked the book we were given, at the beginning of the class. There were many useful strategies provided. Cheryl sent us emails and provided illustrated handouts, which helped further. I would recommend this course to anyone who is struggling with his/her dog. The lessons provide plenty of hands on practice, in a variety of situations, with strategies you can use everyday. Thanks, from Laurie and her dog, Maggie.
Drove from Saskatchewan to meet the rabbits they had for adoption. Beautiful holding area for the rabbits that allowed people to view them without stressing out the animals. After getting to know the bunnies, miss Bella seemed the most interested in my company. We adopted her that day. Very helpful staff. Great experience.
Adopted our rabbit from here. Helpful, friendly staff and so many sweet, well-cared for animals. The nicest shelter we've ever been to. Felt very well supported with the adoption.
Very grateful to the cremation team. My pup passed away on a Sunday afternoon and they were very accommodating in regards to taking my pups remains for cremation on short notice. I didn’t have to worry about her remains overnight.
An excellent place to adopt from, they look like they take great care of the animals. Adopted my first cat from them and he's a real sweetie. Nice place too if you want to check out what animals they have, never felt pressured or awkward and there were always people walking around if you have questions.
Couldn't of asked for better staff. Animals seem very well taken care of here, process was smooth for my dog and he is happy as ever in his new home (:
Doesn't allow your dogs in with you to view other dogs anymore. Got the feeling my donation was not going to make a difference, next years cookies will go elsewhere.
Rude, we went there to adopt couple finches, they asked my 10 years old if you are planning to bread them, with all honesty he said, we have big inclosure with over 30 different finch and canary and they will live there, we dont control that or intentionally breed any birds, they denied giving him the chance to rescue/adopt any birds as they claim they dont want birds to be used for breeding. Now my son thing he should never be honest anymore, went home broken heart. Rude customer service and Rude supervisor. All 3 customer service were free yet you have to wait 20 min until they finish chatting.
Iam not very impressed with the way no one seems to care what happened to me and doesn't seem to care that my pets abondoned by so called friend / room mate who said not to worry he will watch my cats and dlgbwillow both my cats are with u I can't find dog anywhere
Fiercely committed staff to ensuring forever homes for the animals in their care. Great, clean facility. Have been here both to adopt and for pet training classes.
I just got a kitty from the humane society and my only complaint is that the place is very sad. But that not the humane societies fault. It seems to me they are doing the best they can with the tools they have available. I would recommend the humane society over most other ways to get pets. I found my sweet little kitty Auri there.
A great place to go and adopt a pet if you are looking to add to your family.knowledgeable and friendly staff and all sorts of animals to choose amongst
Great facility with wonderful, helpful and passionate staff. So many resources available to help pet owners and their store has great prices and selection. So much more than what most people expect.
Bright, cheery, new facility. Excellent, excellent, excellent class for dogs with fear aggression problems (Reactive Rover class). They use classical conditioning, operant conditioning (clickers), and explain the science behind the exercises. Our teacher is very welcoming, encouraging, and helpful. I'm making great progress with my dog!
Extremely Disappointing. Went in yesterday with 2 big boxes of brand new donations that I spent well over $200 on for the shelter stuff-a-pooch-pod. Couldn’t find anyone to give my mom and I the time of day or to help us find where we are drop them off. Lady at the front desk was scattered and all over the place, nice enough, but clearly didn’t have much knowledge. Also, it wasn’t busy at this time so no excuse. Completely deadsville.
After finally dropping the box off, my mom and I looked around. While I obviously appreciate what the CHS does for the animals, it was extremely disappointing to not be able to find a single staff member to help us when I had wanted to spend time with a dog that I felt a connection with. However, saw several staff members walk past us without a ‘hello’ or even a smile. Nice.
I finally managed to track someone down in adoptions who told me the “only way I can spend a few minutes with her is by filling out an extensive 2 page **adoption application** and providing my ID”. Which makes zero sense since I told her I wasn’t able to adopt at this time but just wanted to sit a few minutes with this dog. The dog had tried to give me her toy to throw through the glass and since I couldn’t it broke my heart. While I understand protocol, filling out a 2 page adoption form to have 5 minutes with this sweet dog does NOT MAKE SENSE. None of the questions on this form even applied.
Told her my ID was in the car across the lot, couldn’t carry my purse in due to my hands being full with the donations so by this point it became more of hassel just for them to let me say a quick hello to the dog.
Also, let me mention, I have adopted ***numerous*** cats throughout the years at CHS and have made quite large donations every year as well, not sure how staff can give such grief. What a way to treat someone.
Came to do a good thing with my donations and left crying.
Nice facility but staff is not that attentive and fairly slow at processing. It's reasonable to assume staff should take time doing adoption process, but not reasonable to expect one person to handle processes when there are 6 people waiting. Possibly not a universal experience, but that was mine.
