Dickens

The poetry slam event here was AMAZING! But my goodness talk about grumpy servers and grungy atmosphere. Not my thing, I guess.

Whether it's a band, game night, movie night, whatever your reason for going to Dickens, it's always fantastic! Staff is awesome, atmosphere is great! The food has never let me down. Follow them for events and come on out to something if you never have before. I guarantee you will be back:)

I love this place for the staff, the atmosphere, and the killer entertainment. I have literally never had a bad time at Dickens.plus the pizza is amazing

We were there for a trivia night finals event, so this might be isolated from how Dickens normally is.

The a/v tech was awful, truly awful. Sound effects were poorly timed and the volume was all over the place, lots of microphone feedback.all creating an extremely frustrating experience. The trivia host frequently mispronounced names and even regular words, but again, I don't think he's a staple of Dickens (but if he is, holy smokes, he needs honest constructive criticism from a friend).

My trivia team and I couldn't wait to leave.

Service was good, but I felt crowded and pressured to constantly keep ordering drinks. Food was ok.

I love this place! I love the owners, the shows. I've been going for decades and hopefully more decades to come.xoxo

Thank you for letting us host Cayle Charlton's Memorial here last night! Truly amazing staff!
They rocked!

Ordered the fries. They were so over cooked and hard I couldn’t even eat them. I asked for them to be remain they said no the kitchen was “too busy”. I still had to pay for them. Will not be returning. 0 stars. Left hungry.

Great atmosphere. Food is pretty good, just limited (which is expected for a small venue). Great people, great fun, they have a lot of different events. Highly recommend

Food's always tasty and fair priced. The staff is super fantastic, and make you feel at home. Not to mention they are very actively a safe space and work to be so for all individuals! Very down to earth feel with lots of really awesome events that range from movie nights, poetry nights, burlesque, drag, and more!

It's probably my most frequented spot in Calgary for these reasons lol

Nothing appealing about the place the layout was weird and the gatekeepers are unreal. Maybe it's better when there's a band instead of a dj? I have no desire to go back.

I am visiting for Terminus. Had to order the pickle fries. A new tradition since last year when I came down.
I ordered the chicken parm burger with a side of pickle fries the next night. I ate about 3/4 of it, and had to box the rest. The portions are very good.
I love the staff and their unique styles. Very quick service, even when super busy.
There is not a lot of seating, which is disappointing, but I understand it gets quite crowded, and is already difficult to navigate.

There are stairs to get downstairs to the bar, however I did see a few wheelchairs, so there is some way for them to get in, but I'm not sure on the specifics as I did not see an elevator.

The first bathroom has stalls, but you have to either straddle the toilet, or squish off to one side to be able to get in and close the door. Very awkward. Not good for mobility challenged.

Saw the Terminus Festival there and it was Fantastic! Everyone was Awesome place is well-organized and staff are Amazing

I really like this place I'll come every weekend I like to post good places on my social media.

Always a great venue for shows, was there for a Sled Island show and had a wonderful time.

Downstairs event venue / bar that hosts a lot of great queer events and has local craft beer on tap. Gender neutral washrooms. 2SLGBTQIA+ welcoming.

I have been to dickens many times to watch live music and play the stage myself.
The staff are great the layout is convenient with lots of room at the back of the club to get away from the stage if you are trying to hold a conversation and lots of room in front of the stage so you can take in any show you are there to see.
Dickens has been a mainstay in the Calgary scene for many year and hopefully it will be around for may more.

The owner Chris is an interesting character. They needed more guys to bounce for one of their shows. I met everyone and I know most of the people there. First thing he says to me is no cowboy hats. Buddy I have never had anyone tell me no cowboy hats! We live in Alberta! Welcome to cowtown. So I left because I ain’t gonna work at a place that discriminates against people who run Alberta! Good luck Chris ;)

By far my favourite drinking hole! They went above and beyond for me. My favourite band Madball did a show here and I brought in a massive painting and they got it signed for me. I am in tears from happiness and I hope they know how much I appreciate the staff that made this happen

Fun place to go on the weekends. Lovely service at the bar.

One thing, I've called a few times inquiring about tickets for a group of people. I understand some shows are sold out. There is a woman that sometimes answers, and when asked about availability, almost gets defensive/sounds angry.just something to be aware of.

Other than that, great times and highly recommend!

This place is usually amazing. I go to almost every hang the dj since it’s USUALLY neuro divergent friendly. But tonight is not one of those nights. So I have a huge friend group and half of us love to dance and half of us love to hang out in the back room. It’s the perfect set up. Those who dance dance and those who get over stimmed watch the table and have amazing conversation. But every once in awhile we will all come pay our cover only to then find out it’s going to be a miserable night. The inconsistency is making us not want to show up anymore. Which sucks because we usually all buy food and get hammered here. Was really looking forward to the dill pickle frys. But ya consistency would be great.
