Great selection of meats, go there after lunch, there will be less people, the food was cheap but good, service was great.

Compared to the last visit almost 10 years ago, portions were smaller and pro e higher. Understandable due to inflation and cost increases. But still better choice than other steakhouses.

Geoffrey is the most phenomenal server I have ever had. Food was amazing but Geoffrey is the star of the show!

Great service! I was walking around Calgary in the evening and decided to stop in for a bite to eat, I didn’t have a reserved table but they accepted me anyway, and yes, I don’t know English, and the waitress kindly dictated everything into my translator! She told everything, showed her, and recommended the menu for the first time, it was simply amazing! Definitely recommend! And I will come back here many more times!

I had an incredible dining experience at Gyu-Kaku in Calgary! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, helping us choose the perfect meats and sauces for our barbecue.

We have two people and ordered two types of beef, pork belly, a assorted vegetables and beef sukiyaki bibimbap, that’s totally enough for both of us.
The prime kalbi short rib is like the thin slice of beef which I wont recommend
BUT the Harami skirt steak taste much better!
Beef sukiyaki bibimbap is good as well, our waitresses helped us to mix it and it has a great scorched rice at the bottom which taste so good!
We had Gyu kaku ice cream for dessert but it was just a normal vanilla ice crem with caramel on top

Update: still awesome and still one of the best options in town.

Ask for Wendy's tables. She's our favorite waitress there. Even when we don't get to sit in her area, she still comes by to say hi.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ has been around for a while, and we have visited several times a year.

We had family from out of town and thought she would like to have Japanese BBQ. We came in htw late evening, yet the restaurant was still packed.

We ordered a select number of meats to grill. They were all excellent. Nothing was chewy. Even the calamari had the right bounce. The meats have enough flavor that we found we hardly need to use the trio of sauces.

The Black Pepper Wings are decent. They are fried just right, so the skin is crispy, yet the meat is still very moist. I would order these again!

The Tuna Poke Nachos are different. They are heavier and probably would be sufficient for a light meal. The tuna tasted fresh, and the poke paired well with the fried nachos.

The Wakame Seaweed Salad is refreshing and, when added to the Beef Sukiyaki Bibimbap, elevates that dish.

The Beef Sukiyaki Bibimbap was the best dish of the night! The hot stone bowl crisped up the rice, so there was a delicious crunch to the meal. The flavors were on point, and we all agree that the Beef Sukiyaki Bibimbap is a dish to order again.

The Tonkotsu Ramen is decent enough to be considered comparative to a Ramen shop. I'm impressed by their flavors. Is it the best? No, but it is awesome for a non-ramen specialty restaurant.

Overall, we love coming to Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ. We always have a great time and never leave hungry.

What a wonderful experience I had at Gyu-Kaku. The sauces were to die for, the service was impeccable, and the food was exceptional. The experience alone of grilling your own hanger steak at your table is worth the price of admission. Definitely one of the many gems of Downtown Calgary.

Food was good. We went for a friend's birthday. For a group of six they gave us a table with one grill. The restaurant seemed to be understaffed. Our food was slow to come and slow to cook. Since we took longer the manager did come by and remind us that we should have only had the table for 90 minutes. If we were given a table with two grills we definitely wouldn't have had an issue with time frame. Regardless, I understand why the time limit is there for all you can eat but the time limited used to be two hours, why is it 90 minutes now? And if you want people to be leaving at the appropriate time then you have to make sure that the food is quick to come out and there is enough grill space to cook for a six.

I have to wait too long and they just let me order only 2 meat 1 time. Too slow, tooooooooo slow. Ayce but i just eat 4 meat in 2 hours. Lol. We come here to eat, not to see the next to table. They should go to Toronto and see how nice service there. Thank you.

The food here was great. We had a server who mentioned to us she was new there (Cat) and she was excellent. She was always there when we needed something and promptly cleared off our table whenever we finished a dish. They were short some of the regular menu items due to the flooding in southern BC cutting off supply chain but they did great about giving us alternatives. My biggest takeaway is that it really seemed like the staff really cared about the customer experience. I will certainly be going back.

Great experience. We ordered a set of dishes for four, and they kept coming and coming; portions are not very big, but since we had to skinny guys, and two relative moderate eaters, it was enough for us. Not sure it would be regular place so.

My partner and I enjoyed our anniversary meal here. The service was exceptional, staff were attentive and friendly. We'll be back to try some of their other offerings soon!

This place is a total joke.
You have to bare with the long wait time for a table and the ignorance from Irene better be called Bakayarou.
The meat selections also are pure junk, they will serve you the lowest cut right from the beginning. Check the picture for what I mean.
There is also no Shichimi seasoning offered. How funny

Always a good time here. But I have to say sometimes their seasoning or marinate on some of their meat are a hit or miss. Other than that, been eating here for years now.

Amazing food, service was great. Went for the lunch special which is $18 for 3 meats + rice, miso and salad.

One of the best JBBQ places I've been to. The lunch combo deal is fantastic for what you get. Super affordable and tasty for the quality you get.

Great place and friendly staff. I remember the first time we had it in Hawaii a few years ago it was delicious. Than we checked out Gyu-Kaku in Calgary and was no different. The food was amazing and so was the staff and environment. A bit pricy but it is worth it considering the food and the staff alone.

First time having a yakiniku experience. All the meat taste good. I tried the AYCE 90min course, the meat are in good portion. Will definitely come back again.

DIY Japanese bbq experiences are not common in Calgary. This is a place I keep coming back to for their variety, the changes in menu, and the delicious marinated meat! Pricing is a bit higher for certain dishes and cuts of meat, but it's hard to find another comparable restaurant. My favorite is the hanger steak!

Great cost and benefit! Not as many people that does not like to cook your own food on the table, I LOVE it! It is great! Affordable at lunch time and dinner and they have very kind waitressses and waiters! Please try it if you are downtown in Calgary!

Great food, the share platter for two was too much food for two ladies - but nothing wrong with that! It was delicious and definitely worth the price!

We had a reservation for a large party and the manager was very accommodating to our needs as well as the fact that we were slightly late to our table. Given its location and popularity the quality and price of the food was fair.

The reception is slow and was a little rude when we got there. He did not take our names for a waitlist nor inform us that on the spot reservations are possible. Instead of relying information, he told us to look some place else, even after we politely asked to be on a waitlist (it was a little late but we were willing to wait anyways).

We wanted to test their reception and waited 10 minutes outside after making an online reservation without telling them and we were able to get in through a different receptionist. The person behind us did not make any reservation but they were able to get a table along with us.

Despite this, the food was really good.

Service can be a bit hit-or-miss. Items are generally quite good and worthwhile. Our favorites are the umakara ribeye and toro beef. Side sauces are tasty as well. A nice, intimate dining experience - fun to grill with friends and family.

This is one cool place to eat. You cook your own proteins at the grill located in your table. The wait staff provide tips on cooking the meats. The service is great, the meats are really nicely seasoned, and the sides also taste great.

Would give it a zero if I could. It took more than one hour to get food. Beef quality was like junk and not fresh. I ordered the set menu for 4 persons but the portions was so small. It was a busy night I got it, but worst service I have ever experienced. Go ANYWHERE else

The BEST Asian BBQ in Calgary. Ever since coming back from Japan I missed Japanese barbecue. When I do I ALWAYS come to Gyu Kaku. It shows they are so successful because they are always Bopping! Amazing servers, I missed the Japanese servers they used to have cause it just adds something extra. Other than that, great meat cuts, I LOVE GYU KAKU

Wow. We were looking for a sushi place that had dining open after 9pm. When we arrived we discovered that it wasn't a sushi joint but we were starving and decided to stay. Boy, are we glad that we did. The food was excellent and cooking your own meats and veggies on the table BBQ was immensely fun. I do not have a bad thing to say about the place.

Amazing to dine in, which I do a few times a month. Be cautious ordering delivery as you will be missing items and sauces everytime! Very disappointed in the lack of care and attention to delivery orders. Especially when it's the garlic noodles which is one of my favorite dishes there.

Great atmosphere and food. They lack nothing here, with exceptional staff and delicious food you will walk away satisfied and full. My server tonight Sumen made me and my partner feel right at home. Its refreshing to see that the human touch hasn't been completely lost throughout this whole pandemic and that people are still willing to go above and beyond in the restaurant industry.

Great experience due to nice staff and decent food. The prices are somewhat high if you compare it to the many all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ joints throughout the city. The ambience is great and it's fun to cook the food but personally, I found the marinades not as flavourful. There's nothing that jumped out for me. The smell was amazing though. Overall it's a good place to try out.

Definitely enjoyed my experience there. The waiter was very good at his job. Got everything done in a timely manner without making us feel rushed. We had the lunch special and felt the value was good for the price. Definitely stuffed afterwards and we didn't have to order extra. I would recommend to anyone.

The service here is always super friendly and the servers are always very attentive to your needs. Its a great place for Japanese and Korean food in general but the taste of the food itself can be hit or miss depending on the day/who’s working, etc. It’s also on the pricier side for what it is.

I used to come here a lot back in high school. Decided to revisit and I just feel like the food doesn’t taste as good as it used too. There have also been a lot of bad rumours circulating about this specific location regarding the cleanliness of the kitchen as well as the freshness of the food so I guess take this review with a grain of salt.

Food was good, service was ok. One star for decreased portion AND jacked up prices. Most places stick with one or the other. Also, a restaurant of that size should not be allowed reservations at all.stop, just stop taking reservations.you guys are the size of a Starbucks.

Quite pricey but amazing quality Japanese BBQ that you can't find anywhere else in Calgary. The staff are very professional, the restaurant is always clean, and service is always insanely fast. A great place for large parties of a very hungry couple.

I used to come to this place once a while. It was always good place to have a nice Japanese bbq back in Vancouver. However, I have had some bad experience here in Calgary. The staff is kind rude in here. I went in couple days ago on Christmas night. I was wondering how long will it takes me to wait since I had no appointment, the staff in the front door told me that I have to wait 2 and half hours and she talk really loud to me without showing any patients. I left my phone number and left. About an hour later, I received a call from that lady, she asked me if I still want to go, after I told her I am not going she sounds very happy and immediately hang up the phone. After couple days, I still feel want to have some bbq. So me and my girlfriend came again and luckily we got a table. We ordered the new year special menu which was the 80dollars for two. We got three bbq items with lots starters. We still feel hungry after having all the food on the table. I asked our service if thats all we got from the meal she said yes. I asked for the menu and trying to order some more food, then I saw we supposed to have five bbq items instead of three. I noticed the service, she double checked and finally gives us the missing items with no apologies, only rudely says” now you have all”. This is a really bad dinner we have in Calgary two days before new year. Definitely Not coming again.

Went here for the first time! Place lived up to the hype. Amazing different kinds of meats. Juicy and tender. Be careful while grilling as you do not want to over cook the meat. Must try for every meat lover out there.

Food Quality is very low and service even worse we ordered our food and decided to go with another choice but waitress Simply refused No you cannot change Sorry NO you cannot if we have ordered in 20 min and changed I would understand but it was within one min infect not even and to be honest meat Quality is low key you can try it to find out but we are not going back.

I’ve been wanting to try this place out for months now and finally found the time to go. Took my boyfriend here for late happy hour and shared the happy hour combo which is an awesome price for what you get. For $55 I definitely left full (except my boyfriend is a giant so him, not so much.). It’s definitely a fun experience and I definitely recommend this to anyone who’s never tried it. As an Asian I’m use to places where you cook your own food at your table but my boyfriend being German, he had a blast.

Our server was amazing, although a little quiet, and kept on top of filling our water, gave us instructions on how to cook each item. Items came out at a decent pace, you can’t overcrowd the grill so it all worked out.

Everything tasted great. Growing up in Alberta my favourite protein is beef so this was the right choice for me. I can’t say which cut of beef I liked better, they all just offer different tastes and textures. The marinades are delicious and because your cooking the meat yourself, you can always insure it’s done the way you want.

For dessert my boyfriend ordered s’mores. You get two per order and it’s kinda fun roasting the marshmallows over the grill. I myself got green tea ice cream cause I can never pass it up. The ice cream was 3 giant scoops which I wasn’t expecting as most places you get one round ball in a small cup so that was definitely worth it.

Overall I can say I’m gonna take more friends here now that I know what it’s like. My only complaint was the table behind me but that you can’t help.

My only other critique is that I wish they would give you separate tongs for your beef and your chicken but other than that I would recommend this place to anyone ️

Not the most authentic Japanese style grill, but flavours are still decent. Also, can't really find anything else in Calgary of this style, so worth trying out for uniqueness.

Yummy. Wasn't sure what to expect trying this out for the first time after my friends suggestion. We ordered a $70 two-person combo. There were two appetisers, four meat dishes, two veggies, a stone bowl rice and a desert. Seared tuna was particularly tasty with onions, green onions and garlic on top. The meat was fresh, marinated perfectly making it tasty and flavourful. They had extra sauces on the side i didnt even get to try since the meat was so beautifully marinated you wouldn't want to mess with it. Our waitress even suggested how many minutes to cook on each side as the dishes arrive just incase cooking is not your wheelhouse. Portions aren't huge if you have a big meat craving type appetite, but it was a very well balanced meal by itself. This is definitely a place worth checking out, I know for sure I will very likely return for more.

The menu is surprisingly expansive for a BBQ restaurant. Their BBQ sets are delicious and fairly priced. The sets come with a variety of different types of meat to offer different textures and tastes depending on cut and marinade. The set also comes with different side dishes that are delicious and compliment the meat very well. Along with side dishes they also offer other Japanese cuisine. I've tried their ramen and it was surprisingly very good. Not comparable to the best ramen restaurants, but it definitely holds up and is worth to try.

There is a parkade that has free parking after certain hours, but street parking is very doable.

Gyu-kaku is a long time frienchise pretty popular in asia. This place opened just down stairs of my work. And has been a frequent customer since. Staffs always friendly, foods always good. Frequent custom would notice that the menu changes often, not for food item changes, but portion changes, and their multi people combo would have items sealed in and out.

The place serves cook your self on table barbecue s and a wide varieties of kitchen items. I would call their menu Japanese and Korean fusion style. Meat served raw and u cook your own meat, every dish they serve they will give u a recommendation of how long to cook. Most meat items served has already been marinate and seasoned very well, and there is still 3 different sauces on the table which u can add to your likings. I personally do prefer to go without any additional sauce.

Kitchen items are also very well done, I love the bibimbap served on a hot bowl and u let it sit for a little bit to let the heat make the rice slightly crispy. Chicken karate is made simple and very lightly battered and soft and tender on the inside.

Gyu-kaku is a nice place for family dinner, happy hours, romantic dates and all kinds of occasions. Kids love the snores, drinks are cheap, foods are reasonably priced. Strongly recommended.

(The establishment has aged a bit, and their ventilation are less effective and is quite smokey inside. I really would love it if they can fix that, and that would make the restaurant flawless.)

Fantastic food, haven't had good Japanese style bbq since we moved to Canada from Tokyo. The point card is a nice touch as well, we will certainly be making use of it in the near future! Can't wait to go back.

Good place to eat, and interesting experience. We tried most of the meats and they were all good. Especially liked the Beef Sukiaki rice. I did end up smelling like a BBQ afterwards.

They are not very accommodating! Not friendly staff specially the girl in front! Waisted our time to find paid parking and when We reach to the restaurant We were turned down because of a “big reservation coming in an hour” (she said) when there are only two tables taken! We could have order and left from that 1 hour. There are also couple who gets turned down before us! Not happy at all!

The Japanese BBQ does not disappoint in taste. The servers will tell you how long to cook each type of platter that they bring out and you can dip your BBQ meat in ponzu sauce, spicy sauce and soy sauce. They play the music really loud in the restaurant so it becomes difficult to understand your server. The place is a little too dim for my comfort, but otherwise offers a good variety of selections.

I wish to have this here in Edmonton soon. This is my very very favourite restaurant in Vancouver and Calgary. They have a very reasonable happy hour lunch combo for 2 at around +60$ plus tip. Highly recommend!

I have been here few times and its really different. Sometimes its really good but sometimes its not that great. Average its a good place to go once a month i guess.
