I worked at irie foods for 2 years and truly this place I can call family forever! If you ever want roti call ahead of time, and if you want oxtail anytime after 4 make sure to call and place an order! Their food here is always so delicious my favourite is the beef soup!
This Jamaican restaurant has the potential to be an excellent representation of authentic Jamaican food. The price is very reasonable The goat and the oxtail has great flavor with a hint of pepper, but they use par-boil rice. Par-boil is the big grain white rice, that taste like brown rice. Real authentic Jamaican rice is long grain white rice, not the big grain rice. Unfortunately, the rice and peas kills the whole meal for me and my family. The slim and cute young lady that works at the front is wonderful but she don't listen well, because I usually get the wrong item which is frustrating and dampers the eating out experience.
I've given Irie Foods three chances, and I must say I am disappointed with what they offer as "Jamaican" food. While the food isn't terrible by any means, it falls far short of what I would consider authentic Jamaican cuisine.
Irie Foods bills itself as a Jamaican spot, but in reality, it feels more like a generic Caribbean restaurant. The flavors and dishes served here lack that distinctive Jamaican flair that I was hoping for. Jamaican cuisine is known for its bold and unique flavors, and unfortunately, Irie Foods fails to deliver on that promise.
In fairness, when compared to some of the other Caribbean restaurants in Edmonton, Irie Foods does have some redeeming qualities. The staff is friendly, and the ambiance is pleasant, making for a decent dining experience overall. However, the primary reason I visited this place was to enjoy authentic Jamaican dishes, and in that regard, I was let down.
If you're seeking genuinely authentic Jamaican cuisine, I would recommend looking elsewhere. While Irie Foods may satisfy your cravings for Caribbean flavors, it falls short of delivering the true essence of Jamaica in its dishes. They are also over priced compared to different Markets and different Areas. They charge the same for GOAT as they would for Stew chicken.
First I'm very picky person. I went to pickup some rice and peas with oxtail meal it was my first time ordering as I was driving through this area. Boy oh boy the food was delicious loved every bit of it, fresh perfect oxtail soft, and full of flavor. I will definitely take the 30 mins drive to go get more.awesome keep up the great cooking!
Worst tasting Jamaican food I have ever had, too much salt and no flavour. Chicken needs seasoning. We purchased a stew chicken and a jerk chicken, I am Jamaican and this food is a national disgrace to our food. Please don’t advertise authentic Jamaican food because it’s far from authentic.we end up throwing all the food in the garbage, what a waste of $35.00.
Tried their jerk chicken for the first time and although I am not of Jamaican heritage, I’m from Toronto where good Jamaican food is everywhere. And the jerk chicken here doesn’t taste authentic whatsoever. It’s lacking flavour. Not spicy enough and way too sweet. It almost tasted like honey bbq or something. I was so disappointed. The inside of the restaurant could also use more colour and decor it’s looking very plain. Won’t be coming back that’s for sure.
Food quality has really really gone down! Since the elderly lady stopped cooking the food just was not what it use to be. This is no longer Jamaican food really, I feel pattie is no longer store baked and the jerk sauce is from a bottle. I miss the old food. Too much salt and sugar. Bring grandma back
I ate the spicy jerk chicken from this great restaurant and it was the most delicious plate of jerk chicken I’ve ever had. Everyone should be getting their Jamaican food at Irie!
This place was amazing back in the day. I took my sons here, excited to show them a hidden gem in the community. Though the staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean, the food was mediocre, and miles from where it once was, especially at an average of $20/plate. The dumpling, that is now fried hard and is hard as a rock, was the biggest disappointment. The original ones I will have to continue to miss I suppose. Sadly looking for a new place to call home for curried goat amd jerk chicken because we won't be back here unless there is dramatic changes.
I went this afternoon to buy two spicy beef patties and they were super fresh. The freshest yet, before they were dry and not the best. But today, it was spectacular! Just needed to tell you this! You made my day! I was craving spicy patties today so hard, and I'm so satisfied! Thanks guys! Hope it's always consistent like today! Ya mon! Irie!
Jerk chicken was not good…. Oxtail taste was good but not meat all fat & cartilage only reason reason for the 2 stars is the Jamaican patty’s were good
Due to a lack of Jamaican restaurants near me this is the only place you can go to on the south side. The food is good but my only issue is that unless I order at like 10am they always are out of oxtail. So if you want oxtail order before 3pm otherwise they will be out.
Horrible food and not authentic at all. Also, the portions are way too small in comparison to every pther Caribbean place. Do yourself a favor and don't eat here. Fish is always over salted, goat soup had teeth in it so head isnt even washed properly.
THE PLACE: Great location with lots of parking spaces. It is clean and maintained. THE FOOD: I've only ever had the Jamaican patties but they are the best in the city. I've tried many others. THE SERVICE: Always friendly. WOULD I RETURN? Yes, I have been for years.
Came here while visiting Edmonton for the Canada Costa Rica Soccer game. Tried the Oxtail and the Stewed Fish. Both delicious and would love to eat here again.
Very elegant and welcoming spot. They provide big portions and for reasonable prices. We liked the meals a lot and the waiters were very welcoming and explanatory. Highly recommended.
My Goodness. This place makes delicious Goat Curry with Rice. The meat is tender and flavourful and the portions are good. The staff is super sweet too.
Will be back for the Wednesday Special: Jerk Chicken, only $9.99 (on Wednesdays)
Compared to places in toronto this "irie" foods left me highly disappointed underwhelming portions food cold and no flavor the meat tasted like leftovers that been left out the fridge for a week
Fast delivery through Dash. Never tried Irie until yesterday! Amazingly delightful had the Oxtail! So yummy best in town and I’ve been to a few already AND the least expensive! I’m on day 2 today fir Jerk and a Patty, just as yummy still best in town! Oh and perfect fried dumpling too! Mmmmm can’t wait till next time to eat!
Earlier this morning I bought 3 patties for lunch, however one of them were quite stale. The meat inside were dried and falling out of the pastry. I don’t appreciate day old food.
Easily one of the best places to get a wrap/donair/sandwich. The greek style seasoning is the best feature and adds so much flavour, the sauce selection is amazing, and the bison is juicy and delicious. The only thing i would change is more options for veggies; I would definitely like to see spinach as a lettuce alternative and maybe pickles or cucumbers. Love this place.
We ordered on Sept 25/2020 a pick and told them that we would pick up food by 8pm. We reached the store at 8.01pm to pick up food and they are closed. We told the person taking the order that we would reach at 8pm and we even offered to give our credit card info to bill. If you did not want our business you should have just said no. How indecent of you guys to leave us hanging when we reached to pick up at 8pm.
Here's how it goes: HI can I get an extra large order of jerk chicken and oxtail, with extra oxtail, and then extra oxtail on the side (when you get extra oxtail on the side you get it with some extra sauce too that works perfectly on the amount of rice you get). I'll also take two Jamaican patties and a bottle of water. Make that two orders actually, I'll eat the second order at home later.
Stale food. Not pleased 30something dollars on meat and rice old from the weekend. Mine who you serve, if was closer would have returned it. Freshly cooked food is very obvious and what they served was NOT
Best Caribbean Food Ever. Staff that work here are super sweet! When we're not in the caribbean this place makes us feel right at home! If you are craving the Caribbean you just have to hit this place up! Don't miss out
Down-home friendly service family operation not high volume High profits just good old school restaurant food if you like variety of spicy flavour this is quite tasty but make sure you have water handy LOL
I used to love Ms V's but she went out of business the other Jamaican options didn't meet my expectations until I heard about this place on CBC radio 1. And become my favourite ever! Cow foot yum yum yum!
