I drop by the Kinsmen Sports Centre once a week. I have not used the facility itself, but rather service the site. It appears to be a fully established sports center, and I always see a lot of people going in and out. It is also located right next to the beautiful North Saskachewan River. There is also the John Walter Museum across the parking lot, and a few other historical buildings on site.
Kinsmen has excellent and well maintained equipment. I have only 2 negative comments that changed my rating from a 5 to a 4. First is that the track is in dire need of resurfacing. Second, there is a set of steps from the second floor to the track area that is precariously steep and narrow. I know the city is aware as it is part of the eventual rehab plan for the facility.
Spent a lot of my life at this training facility. A very nostalgic place for me. It has everything and more. Hidden areas you can keep finding in every nook and cranny of this place. Highly recommend
Awesome pool but very hot and stuffing inside during swim competition. They could use some sort of food services or more food vendors outside that will take debit. Cash and vending machines were down during tournament! Not very convenient. Ajoing park facilities very nice but parking was ridiculously bad.
UPDATE: Do not bring your children here. This facility is no longer child friendly. When covid started the took away the "indoor playground". I thought we might be able to swim instead but was turned away at the door. I feel bad for families with children that live in the university area since they have no rec center, the outdoor pool, spraypark and playground are good for summer but what do they do in winter? And our winters are so long. The closest would be Commonwealth. We are only there sporadically so it doesn't affect my family that much. Still disappointing. I don't know why they decided to permanently remove the inflatables. They were the only rec center in Edmonton that offered this amenity but I have found Servus Place (St. Ab) and Millenium Place (Sherwood Park) have them in summer.
Old review below:
Took my son here for the new "indoor playground" with a friend but found out on arrival they don't really have an indoor playground. Instead they set up 2 blow up bouncy castles and have some big foam blocks to play with. It was fine for entertaining the toddlers and after we went outside and enjoyed the huge outdoor playgrounds which are wonderfully themed.
This facility is huge! I was super impressed by the size of the pools. The hot tub is super big as well. I had a great time swimming here. I haven't tried the gym but I looked around and it looks really nice so I'm excited to use it. Also, the grounds which it's located on are so nice to hang out and walk around in. Especially on sunny days. I wish they had longer hours. 5/5 stars.
Kinsmen pool was where I learned to swim as a kid and I loved it back then (early-to-mid 90s). I recently returned to Kinsmen (my local pool is closed for renovations for the summer) and it's aged well. It's clean; the lifeguards are helpful in explaining which lanes are open for non-club swimmers like me; the lanes are labeled slow, medium, fast, so i don't worry about inconveniencing others; the water is warm; there's plenty of gear to borrow; and there are a couple showers in the ladies' locker room with curtains in case you prefer privacy. There are lots of non-curtained showers too, if that's your preference!
Quite impressed by the facilities. Olympic style swimming pool, excellent equipment and helpful employees. All this combined makes an excellent place to visit for gym facilities.
Overall staff is really friendly. Best thing about them is you can book for badminton courts so you can play in peace.
Biggest thing they can improve on is keeping good quality shuttles/birdies and even racquets. Yonex is a good brand, they should definitely switch to that. They provide birdies that kids play with, which is not good when you pay for a service or you are a member.
I understand this place has great pool facilities though for working out there’s a problem for me, it’s layout design is so odd, I guess due to the buildings age, there’s no windows to look out to the outside and I find that depressing plus no functioning wifi, again this is just me, other people can love it
My objective for coming here was to swim so my review is solely based off the lane swimming. As there is no open pool for kids this place is perfect for anyone looking to build their strength/technique in swimming. I seen they had diving platforms. Quite high too, the Canadian flag is a nice touch as well!
They wouldn't let my friend in to use the washroom without a mask even though she has a health challenge and a mask exemption. Would never go back there!
I went into this place on Saturday March 20,2021 at approx. 2pm. I was immediately harassed for not wearing a face mask. These people need some education on customer relations and how to read and comprehend the "medical" face mask exemption in the City of Edmonton bylaw. Persons with medical exemptions are not required to wear a face mask. This has been going on for a year yet there are still uneducated businesses out there. I boycott these business now and even when covid is done for their discrimination and ignorance. I do not recommend to anyone to use this business that discriminates against handicapped people.
The running track is cool, not too warm, and in good condition. The exercise area is mostly well kept but has an awkward layout. The courts are fantastic; easy to book and they usually have it prepared for the activity you requested. Rentals and entry fees are reasonable. Would definitely recommend.
I mean, getting our memberships took forever, and every time we went there someone had something different to say, which didn't help matters. The facilities are pretty great though, far as I'm concerned.
Very well kept, lots of space, many activities available. Only complaint is how busy many of the faculties are, rarely is the diving open, or many swim lanes, and lots of spaces are continually booked. Other than that, great place to get some exercise.
I love the facility. But the only thing that I'd give a 1 star is the showers in the mens change room. One side is freezing and the other side takes a couple minutes to warm up
Great center, very clean and efficient.love the fact that even at rush hours there are still some available spots (just make sure to put some varieties in your routines). Lockers are huge with the abilities to bring your own “Code” locks so don’t walk around with a key hanging or lose them.great place overall
Side notes: after legs day there are some steps inside to walk up. GOOD LUCK
Didn't really used the facility, just walked around and been to the viewing area for the pool. Kids play zone doesn't open until October so we just walked around. From outside we could see there are lot of options for your workout. There is a big swimming pool and around the corner there's another one. There's another big area that I guess is swimming pool too but there's no water then. However, lots of parking spots. Small outdoor kids play zone right at the corner.
Probably one of if not the best training centre in Edmonton/Alberta. Canadian Olympic Athlete's train here, why can't you? Love the facility, big and beautiful. Olympic size pool for laps, two main tracks upstairs/downstairs. Weight room, drop in classes, Olympic lifting area, personal trainers, not to mention access to other facilities around Edmonton with a membership. They are continuing to expand and upgrade from more parking to more programs. Highly recommend coming here. Remember it's on a one way road. Plan accordingly.
I have spent a lot of time in City of Edmonton pools over my lifetime, as a patron, swimming instructor, and competitive swimmer. Indoor city pools have so many rules now that they aren't fun. You can't use the diving blocks. You have to wear a (wasteful) wristband. It's about control and compliance. The value is terrible. These are subsidized pools that are supposed to be accessible. Kinsmen charges $10.25 to use the tot pool only.
Very nice facility and has everything you need. Avoid their cafeteria (currently called Red Table). Staff member doesn't look interested in working and was on his cellphone while taking my order and cooking my food.
I go to the obstacle fit classes on Wednesday and Saturdays and it’s always so much fun. The instructors are wonderful and welcoming. I highly recommend to come check these classes out!
Super nice sport center with plenty of activities. Brand new gym and amazing Olympic size pools. Such a shame they don't have hot tubs or a jacuzzi. And changing rooms can get some renovations. Highly recommended.
I grew up here driving and had the best childhood EVER my favourite can't say anything bad about my 13 years training to be an Olympic diver for Canada best place to raise kids in sports.world-class center for excellence.
Took my son here for the new "indoor playground" with a friend but found out on arrival they don't really have an indoor playground. Amazing facilities with a good attentive staff, the only draw back was soaker pool was a little cool, and floor between change room and sauna was very slippery.
Great gym would recommend over "GOODLIFE FITNESS" or any the like because think about it. Like literally, any day if you want to go to the pool or any courts. You can. For like 45/month ish. All all the group classess you could ever want, hiit workouts, yoga, zumba, spin. You name it
Getting really tired of the coming to use the indoor playground and it never being set up on time. I'm literally sitting here right now and the playground was supposed to be Set up fifteen minutes ago and they still haven't even started it.
