Love this place. They have great people who are very friendly and helpful. Have all your needs for your camera. Analog or digital. Highly recommend these guys.
My go-to spot for 35mm film and processing in Edmonton. Staff are friendly and experts on products, and they carry some great used cameras and lenses (film and digital). Their staff are certainly knowledgeable on film cameras and are happy to chat about you camera or take a peek at one you purchased elsewhere. The only thing that has recently affected my experience here is how hard it is to get access to colour film (they sell out fast because I understand there is a bit of a shortage).
At the time of this review, I am just starting out as a hobbyist photographer. I went to this store on Christmas Eve to check out camera accessories and try out Sony’s a7c. Maddy came to help me out and answered and handled my barrage of newbie questions like a champ - super friendly and professionally. Usually there’s snobby folks in any niche hobby but Maddy didn’t show any signs of that. I left the store more educated and inspired to take pictures - despite Maddy having to work on Christmas Eve. I ended up buying a Peak Design Cuff that Maddy helped price match. I highly recommend coming here for your photo needs. I’ll definitely be back!
I’m in Victoria, BC and mail-ordered film (HP5+) and darkroom wetting agent (Kodak Photo-Flo 200). I’m 100% pleased. It was easy to order on-line. Shipping was free (over $100), delivery was fast and my goods came packed very nicely.
McBain has a huge range of B&W films. Highly recommended. I’ll be back!
Price is decent and staff was friendly. Dropped off some films last Thursday and asked the staff how long it’ll take. He said ~5days and I should get it in Wednesday. It’s Friday now and still haven’t received it.
I recently purchased a newly released lens from this store although I have no idea which one of their store shipped the item. The order was placed five days before to Christmas. And it was delivered two days before it. By the way, I live in Toronto and I am impressed. The order was processed and shipped on the same day it was placed. Their inventory, order processing and shipping at a time like a holiday season is just outstanding. My inquiries prior to the order were answered without delay. With this experience I will strongly recommend this store. Thanks guys keep the good work up.
Got our wedding pictures developed here and most are good but the quality of some of the pictures were horrible paid over 200 dollars 5 of the 8x10 are bad reddish blotches in the pictures and some of the pictures have our heads chopped off very disappointing especially with the amount I paid for them
One of the few Canadian stores I found that sells a good selection of film/darkroom materials online (that isn't all the way in Ontario).
I had some items in my order that happened to be out of stock so they called me promptly and asked me if I'd like any of them substituted. Very professional on the phone. They shipped my order out the day after I placed it, and it arrived in 2 business days (I live on Vancouver Island). Highly recommend!
Ok store, but I recently had a negative experience with a trade in situation. Older 35 mm camera, I had the store send it out for assessment/refurbishment/cleaning to their technicians. Wanted to trade in on another 35 mm camera, they discounted my camera due to a very small damage on the bottom of the camera that is very difficult to see. Used car salesman tactics I call it, so I declined the deal. At least my vintage Pentax will work better now.
Super amazing, intelligent and helpful staff. Went out of their way to help solve an issue i was having, definitely come here for all your camera needs!
Picked up a Fujifilm X-T4 while I was here. The photo tech 2as very knowledgeable. He let me try a few different mirrorless cameras until I decided on the Fuji.
(Mission impossible). Amazing service and very helpful staff. I went to print some photos which around 5 photo lab was useless and rejecting to do the job. Stephan spent with me more than 1 hour to be sure that photos well printed and on the standard scale. Very pleased and thankful.
Professional and enthusiast photography store, they sell and know everything about cameras. They even sell film, developer, and old used cameras. The staff will always help you get what you need and help you as best they can to educate about the subject. Best of all, it's a locally started business.
Went in with a purpose, was greeted immediately by a stylish staff member that was with it and able to answer all my questions with ease. I purchased a camera as a gift, better than what I went in for, at a fantastic price. Always great service when I order stuff online for pick up as well. So easy for my easily flustered self
Had a friendly experience with a knowledgeable gentleman named Bob. Found what I wanted and was able to process my transaction smoothly. These guys are awesome. Didn't try to upsell with extras I didn't need. Will definitely be coming back to find these guys for all my photography needs.
Mcbain is always my first stop for camera gear. The folks there are always friendly and full of advice and expertise. They also carry a good selection of used equipment for those of us on a bit of a budget. I love swinging in and saying hi and seeing what's new and cool. Highly recommend!
At the end of April I bought a Sigma 50-100 mm lens & the Sigma dock. Today I'll be driving up to pick up a new Canon 90D. I don't know what it is about spending cash at McBain's however my wife wishes it would end real soon, ; preferably before I mortgage the house buying into medium format cameras or a good cine cam. Either way the sales guy is loving me this month.
12 months, 2 Canon 90D's, 3 Sigma and Canon lenses and a host of other related items later, I actually drove to a Edmonton storefront location, when the Red Deer was closed due to Covid, to pick up an online purchase because I wasn't going to wait 3 days for delivery when I could have it in 2 hours & 1/3 of a tank of gas later. Like a child in a toy shop, I wanted to play with my new toy & I didn't want to wait for it.
I started shopping at McBain's Camera 20 + years ago to buy a T-3 kit set when the T-3 was new. I still have that camera and kit lenses. Who knows what I'll buy next, but if it's camera gear, lenses or related items, I'll always shop McBain. The staff are terrific, the stores are clean and full of the newest and best used equipment in Western Canada.
I developed photos of a sensative nature here. I appreciated the professionalism. No questions were asked and none answered. Laughing was kept to a minimal as they charged me a fair price for digital copies and so forth.of my nudes. Also, i did a passport photo. It to was dealt with quickly and kindly, again with laughing kept to a minimal. Thanx
Anyone When you read that message don't go to this store you will feel upset and nervous believe me is a bad customer service
I do not recommend that place to take passport photos Customer service is horrible in the downtown whole staff not friendly are unprofessional no idea how they can make customers satisfied i would like to focus how they talk to clients i hopefully the management understood
I just visited the store. I went in planning on buying a macro lense. The young guy who attended me gave me the impression he didnt want me at the store or he didnt want to be there. I told him I wanted to try some lenses, before I even told him what type of lense I wanted he said. We dont have much for you try. After asking again for what I wanted he said we have one here you can try and another one BUT I would have to go to the back. And he didnt when to get it. So then I asked for a lense they have on their website and if he knew how long it will take if I were to order it. And in a very despective manner he replied I dont know. So I said oh well. Thank you and I left. I went over to Vistek and what a difference it was, they were friendly, they took the time to talk me through the lenses I tried explaining capabilities, features, etc. I ended buying the lense here. I have bought at mc bain before but I dont think I will do it from now on. VISTEK have much better service and the people there seems very knowledgeable.
Made a order online to pick up in store, and the assistant branch manager Jileane reached out to me to ensure that I had the right camera to fit the lense I purchased. Once I got the the store to pick it up, the staff were polite and very quick! They had hand sanitizer ready and a limit to the customers in store as well. Will be purchasing any other gear I need from here in the future!
I am a YouTube video blogger and I film everyday just to get a new video blog up and posted once a week or more. I had to get my handheld camera stabilizer replaced, they did it right away. They were very nice and awesome service from the management and staff and a special thanks to Jackson from the JCL department as well.
I had no luck with McBain warrenty department. Once the sale was made customer support went out the window. I had a Sony Action Camera that malfunctioned and was sent out for repairs, I found the process to be of no support and the manager at McBain Lied and was combative. If you do a search on here you will find similar posts about warranty issues with McBain. I will never go back
Had 2 Pal VHS tapes converted. They sent the tapes another business off-site, which I was only made aware of when I called 2 weeks later to see when I could pick the tapes up. Quality looks ok. Very expensive.
Customer service is horrible in the downtown area. The salesperson was pushing us to leave quickly even when we were browsing over the store. We left and bought our equipment on Vistek. We even got them to do a kit with better prices on strobes, modifiers, light stands, backdrops, backdrop stands, reflectors, xqd cad.
Great location; ask for Danica - she'll get you set you up with the gear you need for your business. She also keeps you posted on the up and coming tech which is a great touch.
Great place to get passport photos done. Walked in and right away was directed to the back where the pictures are taken. I think I was in there for maybe 10 minutes and left with pictures.
I was looking for a specific canon camera lens that was not in stock at any stores in Edmonton. When I called I was lucky enough to talk to Nica who came up with the idea that I could look at one from one of the other kits and then bring one in from another store if I was happy with it. This was a great solution and I did end up ordering the lens after all.
This is the second time I’ve dealt with Nica, she sold me my canon m50 from the Southgate store. Her knowledge about the products and her willingness to help out the customers even when they don’t really know what they are looking for has helped me get back into photography. It’s great to see someone so dedicated to helping others achieve their goals. This must be why she Is always so busy. She’s definitely an asset and I look forward to dealing with her again when I require more products.
They forgot to develop one of my rolls of film so I had to send it back for another two weeks. But otherwise they have the darkroom equipment I needed and they were efficient at developing my colour film.
Service is quite good. Film development is quite inexpensive and they get it done within a week. Some of the gear is a bit overpriced compared to other online retailers, however that's expected.
EDIT: As pointed out by the owners, they have price protection which I was unaware of! I've changed my review to 5 stars from 4
