Not sure about the place but they do need to hire a better customer service person at the front desk. We had our little dog in a backpack and want to ask if we could bring the dog in because it was 30+ outside and we didn’t want to leave dog in the car. Before we could say anything, she said, “no dog allowed” We asked politely, “how about she staying in the bag” She, “NO” We: “OK. Wife will go into the gift shop to look and husband and dog will wait on the bench on the side” She: “No, they can only stand and wait at the front area” and she ROLLED HER EYES My husband was about to stand in the front to wait for me, “that’s okay. You go in and we will wait here, ” but, I saw her “rolling eyes”. So we left right away. We traveled a lot and had never seen such rude customer service at front desk to greet visitors at a museum. Well, there’s always a first-time for everything. And this little museum in Medicine Hat gave us this not so pleasant first-time experience.
It was amazing walking around the original factory and seeing the original Pottery, machinery, and kilns. I loved the displays of the different types of Pottery and how they were used so many years ago. Ending with a visit to the gift shop. It was a worthwhile trip. I would highly recommend this as a stop when you are in Medicine Hat.
Taking the long route south and then west to our ultimate destination (our place in Invermere) brings us to Medicine Hat AB. Stopped off at this little gem along the way to visit. Completely unplanned and pleasantly surprised at learning the history of this place. 4 hrs later……HIGHLY recommend putting it on the list!
Interesting place. We did a show there with TOQUE and we had a really good time. A lot of construction going on in the area which made it a little bit difficult to get in and out of there logistically. But definitely from a historical standpoint there’s some very interesting things to learn about an Medicine Hat and Canada through this facility. Very good hospitality and we had a great time
Medicine Hat has a unique combination of natural resources that gave early entrepreneurs key ingredients required to start brick and pottery manufacturing operations: clay and natural gas.
This museum, housed within the walls of an original pottery factory provides a glimpse of the amount of physical, human labour involved in creating these clay items.
Seeing the original tools, combined with video footage from the factory brings visitors to imagine what the average worker experienced during the industrial revolution.
It's a very interesting place to see how clay and gas create stoneware. The history behind this and the building and how the different machines/tools work is totally fascinating.
The site was under some upkeep so we only had access to parts of the buildings. We learned alot about the processes of making crockery. Lots of historical information and displays.
My daughter and her husband were visiting from Reddeer and we toured your historic site. We found it very interesting and very informative. Check out the gift shop!
Quite an interesting museum in the historic old town centre area of Medicine Hat. My mother had pieces that were produced at that factory so it had a personal interest to me. I recognized duplicate pieces in Museum collection. Definitely it is worth the visit and price (Senior for me). The machinery in the back is a little hazardous by today's standards yet it was in use and production until the late 1960's.
This is a top notch example of Canada's living industrial history. If you are interested in how everyday items were manufactured a century ago, you will find the tour fascinating. The building has some lovely architecture and the displays and interesting and engaging. Our tour guide (get the guided tour if you can) was excellent, and the people in the ceramics workshop were happy to explain what they were doing and how it both related to. And differed from, the historical practices.
I had not expected to visit Medalta, and didn't really think I would be so fascinated, but it turned out to be a delightful surprise and a highlight of my time in Medicine Hat!
This place was a fantastic stop for our family road trip. We would highly recommend. Also the gift shop has really nice stuff rather than the usual trinkets.
Very interesting tour of an important historical site. It has been well kept up and presented. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and patient with our many questions.
An amazing museum in the heart of Medcine Hat that is well worth your time to visit. We spent about 2 hours in the museum and it was much more than we expected. I recommend you visit their website before your visit as it is also very well done for more information. Highly recommend this museum for all ages.
An enlightening tour of harsh work conditions and incredible ingenuity and inventiveness of potters of Canada's past. Some truly beautiful pieces on display in the museum. Highly recommended, and the kids will love it!
So interesting to see how much work went into making pottery and dinnerware. Also neat to see what was considered the newest labor saving machinery of that time. Very educational.
