Mission: Fun and Games

We were having a birthday party down the street from the store, and one of the presents my partner received was a Catan game.
The problem: Six people are coming over to play Catan, a four-player game.
The Solution: An expansion pack that allows for six players. But where?
I walked into Mission Fun and Games, and two staff members peeked out from behind their cash registers to offer assistance before the front door had even closed.
We had a great time playing Catan, and everyone wanted to do it again.
Modesty prevents me from telling you who won.

Went here to buy a miniature that was out of stock everywhere else in the greater Edmonton area. Purchased it no hassle, but soon realized after making it home that they didn’t apply the discount, and I payed full retail. Very classy business, maybe actually apply your discounts that you advertise?

Staff doesn't really know what they have, I did a web search for a product, their said they had it. I asked a staff member for help finding it he pointed me to the wrong item. I spent a few minutes searching around and found it. Price about 15% higher than most places.

Great pricing, amazing staff, fair distribution, incredible selection. This should be your go-to for anyone in the area and worth the trip if its a bit far for you.

Beware! Price ticket on item may not be the computer price! They will not be transparent about it either. My son was buying an item and the math wasn’t working, I looked at the price tag and the computer price was more. I asked the employee and he said that is the price, that’s it, I didn’t accept this, I had to get the manager.

Excuses given-
#1 prices went up
#2 employee must not have put the right price on it
#3 price tags don’t reflect actual price?

These are the excuses given by the manager, I would not accept this, so he wanted to negotiate the error and meet me half way?

Insanely huge selection of games (and fun). Staff is actually very helpful and knowledgeable about board games.

I haven't been up here before but after getting back into the board game hobby I've found myself coming back here multiple times. Their pricing is just the best from what I can find (online) for new-in-shrink boxes. Staff are knowledgeable about products that they have and were very helpful in helping me find what I want.

Also the building is a castle and there are a bunch of fun props around.

This place is really good, the only flaw it has is that they cancelled/shut down “Pokémon league. My son used to go there all the time when it was on, after it got shut down, he saw no interest in it. I hope they can get it back on and get players interested again.

They have an amazing selection of games and puzzles. Their staff is so nice and helpful. Only con is I find myself very confused when trying to find games, the organization is a bit confusing and not clear.

There is an incredible selection of games, and at some of the lowest prices that you'll find in all Alberta (Canada even, because we've checked game sites multiple times). Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful with whatever questions you have. From board games to card games to puzzles to game pieces to model paints and supplies, whatever a game hobbiest could need. Even the parking stalls have cute/quirky signs.

Am excellent board game shop that offers a wide selection of games, puzzles and accessories. Really enjoy their prices and ability to stock games quite quickly.

When I bought a game and tried to return it a day later un-opened I was then told there are no refunds! I wasn't told that upon purchase. The Mgr.told me there were signs all over the store and when we looked around there were none to be seen. Then he tells me there's one in front of the till. There was one but so small you would have to look for it! Then he also said there's a sign at the entrance which there wasn't!
I wanted to support local but.this store has lost my business!

Love shopping here. Best place for trading cards and board games. They also have models / miniature supplies. Games room also set up for board game playing and competitive Pokémon and other board and card style gaming. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing service! I called about putting in a last minute gift order and asked about which shipping would be best to get it to me on time. Oh wow, this place was a dream come true If you play tabletop games of ANY sort or enjoy board/card games, then I honestly can't think of a better place to go. I have a good friend who constantly recommended this place, but its a 25 minute drive for me as compared to other shops that are 10 minutess or less. After visiting this shop, I can confidently say that I will happily make the 25 min drive to come here in the future. The selection alone was mind-blowing, not to mention the place is impeccably organized and feels pretty opened up despite the mass amount of content they have to offer. Their miniatures sections are organized so well and are HUGE, as well as their dice displays (MASSIVE). They have tons of options for paints, books, mats, dungeon builders.you name it. Long story short, this place is a dream come true and if you haven't been, don't be like me and wait, cuz you're missing out, trust me

Edit - Several trips later to this store and it still clearly is one of the greatest stores for all your tabletop needs in all of Alberta, hands down 10/10

Very fun store with some unique decor and a wide selection of games, figures, dice, and models. Friendly staff who were happy to let me wander around.

Staff is very knowledgeable, they helped us find a great game, set in the time period we were looking for and pretty basic game as we are new to war games.

Everything you might need for any good table top game experience. Board games, card games, CCGs, TTRPGs, dice, minis, card sleeves, and so much more. Best of all, they hire people who actually play the games they stock, so they know what they are selling.

Definitely a great choice for new board games or if you can grab something on sale. Prices are pretty expensive, but then again that’s new board games. Not much in the sales sections outside of sale time of year. Some great advice for recommendations with the staff. Wish they did more to engage the community like with used board games or events. Probably one of the best board game stores in the Edmonton area. Amazing selection and very knowledgeable staff. His selection varies from board games, to puzzles to an astounding collection Cribbage and Mah Jong sets. I have been a long time customer of John's, ever since his days in Grandin, and he has earned my loyalty through being a friendly outgoing man who will always do his best to accommodate you as professionally far as he can. Unfortunately he is a little far from where I live now to be a regular like I used to be, but whenever I am looking to buy a board game I will always check his website first and hope that I can make that purchase there.

The only reason I am taking a star away is that while he was one of the first, if not the first, to host board gaming groups and events in the area, he is being a bit out done by the others in the city who offer a more full service café experience, as opposed to drinks and snacks only. Covid has also really hurt what were long-time, staple events at the place. I really look forward to this place getting back up to speed so that I can return to spending some time quality gaming there!

Games, Games and more Games.sadly didn't have the game i was looking for, but found 2 others to try.

This place is pretty great, wide selection of pretty much anything tabletop or board gaming related. I primarily buy Marvel Champions products from them but they have almost anything else you can think of. Prices are pretty good, in my specific experience they beat online pricing by as much as $10. Friendly staff in store, really helpful. They took the time to help a friend of mine come up with some ideas for games that could be played at an event she was hosting, they weren’t trying to sell her anything it was just straight up board game enthusiasts sharing their passion. They’ve also been really prompt in getting orders fulfilled. In my experience they’ve processed and gotten the order ready for courier pickup same day. This has become my go to place now for board/card games.

Bought a couple of Pokémon ETBs online. Went to pick them up and the packaging was ripped on both. Asked for undamaged ones. They said they are all out. I pointed to one on the shelf that wasn’t ripped. They begrudgingly handed it to me. I asked them to check the back to replace the other damaged box. They said they’re all out but have some in a warehouse. I asked if I could not pick up the damaged one and come back when they are restocked. I was told no and this is the one I get. The two people that enforced some weird “you get what we tell you to get” rule, were Harley and Dale. I thought I’d shop local. But I’ll continue to get my Pokémon from Zephyr Epic in BC, 401games in Ontario and Flairing Lair in Alberta. Check these stores out online before paying 33% more at Mission Games.

Looking for a great selection for games, puzzles and hobby ideas then this is the place for you. The staff here are eager to help you with picking out the perfect items for anything.

The games are priced pretty high to ballpark but many have stickers that say "this item is reduced" which ends up placing the games around the average retail price compared with other retailers (not all games of course). When games are actually on sale (as in, reduced lower than average retail price) the sales are often great. They also have a damaged box section which has some good finds.

Staff here are passionate about games and love to help people discover new ones.

This store is the only place to go for boardgames!
So much selection and the staff are all very helpful. You can tell they all seem to enjoy working there.
Plus most of the time their prices are comparable to Amazon.
Edit: I purchased a Folded space organizer for my Scythe games off Amazon not even thinking to look here and got totally hosed. Would have saved more then 50% if I had bought it from Mission! Lesson learned the hard way.

Looking for rare games this is the place. Bought a hand made crokinole board here and beyond impressed with the quality and how well the pucks slid across the board. Hands down the best board I've ever played on. Highly recommend

While I would have came in personally I do not drive and it helps me keep my friend's birthday present a secret. I made an online order instead on the weekend which was picked filled as soon as the store opened and arrived the next day which was earlier than estimated! (I live in Edmonton) My product was in excellent condition in a nice tightly packed box without it being oversized like some companies do, will definitely shop here again and go in person when I can.

This place is super neat. A little hard to navigate for a newbie. But there is so much choice and the staff are really helpful if you need to find anything (which you probably will) also the exterior of the building is super fun!

If they don't have a game, you're not going to find in the Greater Edmonton Area, but the staff love games and will be able to point you to something just as good if not better. They host some very fun games evenings as well, and the exterior of the building is completely awesome.

Great selection of board games and accessories. Very knowledgeable staff. Only caution would be to know the price of the game on their website prior to taking it to the counter as the labelled price on the game may be an old price, and they refuse to honour listed prices in their store.

Poor customer service. I received the Catan game for Christmas and it was missing pieces but the store refused to do an exchange or replace the pieces. Brand new game still in plastic packaging, game can’t be played without these pieces. Don’t recommend shopping here if you want security on what you buy.

I only been to this store few times & I stop going by last 2+ years & I have not been here since then cuz I go a different way do to my brother is the driver. I only played 1 time for Pokemon its kinda not fun maybe try it 1 more time I dont know but I go another place that abit more fun & I want to play Commander on the weekend but I cant this place & others only host it Monday to Friday only & I dont drive it sucks. How can I have fun at least when Im in Calgary at least theres 2 places I can go to have fun

I took my son here to check out some Dice games and my son wants to try. I just started playing D&D and I got to talking with Eric who helped direct us on a path to some games that my son can start playing. This is him with his first set of dice. The personable staff at mission is always nice. I enjoy the fact that I can walk in explain the group of people I am playing with and give a vague idea of what we like and I will get recommendations from very knowledgeable staff everytime.

Very cluttered store but it doesn't matter, the staff know everything about every game they have and exactly where it is. Very friendly and helpful.

They won't refund money if you try to return an unopened game. Sorry, but I've changed my mind, you should value your customers. As cool as your store and selection is, I will not buy from your store again as I disagree with this archaic policy.

An amazing selection for board gaming needs.staff is knowledgeable about most questions you have for them.

They have every game. Yes, that one. That one too. If you've heard of it, they have it. They are a great place to check out a variety of games. The staff is unbelievably knowledgeable. Seriously. Every time I go there I'm blown away by how much they know about a huge variety of games and how many of them they've played so that they can give advice. You can ask them things like "my brother like this game and that game, what else might be like? " Or, "can you recommend a great cooperative game? " They will have an answer. This is great of you are a gamer and also if you don't know anything but are buying for a gamer. They are friendly and unintimidating for non gamers buying for others and I've heard them explain things in detail to parents and friends of gamers many times. Over the years we have purchased many games here for ourselves and as presents for others. Their recommendations have always been fantastic. The building is shaped like a castle which makes it a fun trip for both kids and adults. I highly recommend that anyone take a trip to this place!

This is the only mtg store I have ever walked into, payed, and been told to come back in two days to pick up what I just paid for (it takes time for them to search for the cards in the back of the store, so come back another day).

Twice, after going through this (having payed the day before game day, been told to wait, not had the cards for game day, and gone in the day after to pick them up) I have been told they do not have the card I ordered - and paid for - in stock.
When this happens they offer either to refund to the debit card that made the transaction (warning that may take up to a week for the funds to go back into my account) or to give store credit. Basically, I can lose my money for a week or grab something other than what I wanted (and wait the same day or two for them to find it in the back, resulting in another trip into this store).

I understand that they do not give the cards out on-the-spot (again, because it takes a day or more to find them), and have attempted to get around this by ordering cards on their masterfully built website. Really, this is the most impressive part of the shop; they have the best website in the greater Edmonton area (that I have seen) for ordering cards. If the rest of their business were at the same standard, I would never go to another shop. However, even ordering cards ahead of time online (and putting a note that I wish to pick them up that evening on the order) has met with mixed success; sometimes resulting in them having the cards ready (which was awesome) and other times leading to a conversation when I arrived wherein I was told it is unreasonable for me to make that request (it then took two more days for them to let me know the cards were ready).

Overall an amazing shop, which saves the customer service from making me give it a 1 star review.

After a bad experience at Mission Fun and Games, I asked the BoardGameGeek community what they thought about a decision made by the owner regarding a product price match. For your benefit, here is the sequence of events and a response from a couple of members:

Gamer goes in to make exchange.
Gamer asks for price match on game.
Cashier checks price match, tells gamer there is some extra credit available after sale.
Gamer wanders store, looking for additional item for the extra credit.
Unknown to either, the other store that the game was price-matched against, sells their only copy.
Gamer returns to till with other item.
Store refuses to honour previously found price match as the item is no longer available in the other store.

“So yeah - in one sense, he IS upset about a price match not being available for a game that can no longer be found (in the other store). But I do have a lot of sympathy for the fact that the price match was agreed by the cashier, and in the next (ten minutes?) the game got sold and the store refused to honour their word.

Technically, the store was probably correct. But I agree this is a situation where the couple bucks it would cost them is far outweighed by the loss of goodwill they have caused. ”

Another comment:

“The store set a price and then reneged because someone wanted to spend more. That is not something that should happen. The store did something stupid. They are likely going to lose far more than whatever the difference was between what they had been willing to sell the game for and what they changed the price to. ”

So John, I had a similar situation with a different outcome at 401games.ca. A supervisor price matched a product with another store which was heavily discounted that he wasn’t going to make his expected profit. The store manager called back and explained that the supervisor should not have done it but "a promise is a promise" and he'd honour it. "

Well, the store still has my business. I am an avid board game collector - I order about 5-10 games a month. I currently have 20 games on preorder, all at 401games.ca. My experience leads me to conclude that you chose a short term gain of $9 over customer retention and loyalty and longterm profit - very shortsighted from my viewpoint, and others within the board game community agree with that. This is why I will not shop at your store any longer. In your own words, (I am not the only one this has happened to and I will not be the last). Though you've managed this business for God knows how long, it seems you still need some lessons in good customer service and a touch of wisdom. Good luck!

Oh! One last piece of advice: could you please review the prices on old products that sell for outrageous prices while their newer versions sell for significantly less? It makes no sense that the base version of Agricola All Creatures Large and Small sells for $140 on your shelf while the newer Big box version with all of its expansions sells for $50 online. You’re sleeping at the wheel! Wake up!

First off, the only product I'm interested in at Mission is trading cards. My review is based 100% off my experiences at the counter that sells MTG, Pokemon, etc.

I was unbelievably excited when I was informed by Mission staff approximately 2 years ago that they were going to start selling single Magic cards - finally, a reason for me to shop in the place painted like a castle! I love the event room, which is surrounded (on a shelf about 10ft high) by ancient relic booster boxes from Pokemon/Magic from the 90's. Just a cool place in general.

I really wanted to become a regular there and I was for awhile, but after too many incidents where I experienced terrible customer service, I will no longer be returning. Here is a brief story of just the last incident that made me be completely done with this store.

Heading north from Edmonton and driving through StA on the way, I go into the store about 20min before they closed. I look around at the single cards for about 10min and ask the girl at the counter if I could buy three cards. She said there was a new process for buying single cards. Now, I heard this nonsense (explained below) from other employees in the past, but they would always still sell product to me since I was actively shopping there, like everyone else in the store.

She explained to me that I had to fill out my order online, submit it, the staff would collect the order from their cards in the back, and have the cards ready for whenever the customer came in. I actually pointed out over $100 worth of product I wanted to buy that was 2ft away from both of us, clearly available, and I was being turned away. She was actually refusing to sell the cards. I still can't believe it. I asked her if she was serious and she said yes. I told her I also had cards for trade if that helped (if they wanted to add to inventory or something, I was just spit balling because I really wanted the cards), and she said, and I quote, "we close in like one minute. "

I really don't have anything else to say other than please don't support this business. They are trying to avoid being labeled as a normal LGS: a face-to-face, friendly, relationship-building, community-building LGS. Instead, clearly they would rather be a warehouse with boxes of cards being picked through and given to customers who would spend 30sec in the store just to pick up the product and leave. What a terrible method of marketing.

Goodbye Mission! You've lost a long time customer.

The location is both beautiful and well stocked.the card tables in the back or game tables I guess are well-maintained and look nice, chairs not the most comfortable but their game shop chairs.the service was amazing.the dude behind the counter was talking me through the games that I was purchasing telling me basically how to play them as if he played them before. I'd assume we had and give me a few pointers as to other games that I might like. Overall pleasant experience worth it if you're looking for some board games in town.

Absolutely love this place! We usually go as a family to the game cafe, try out a few games, and then choose one to buy. The staff is incredibly freindly, knowledgeable, and not pushy in the least!
