When it came time to say goodbye to our beloved dog of 13 years, we were so happy we chose Royal Veterinary Hospital. We opted for in home euthanasia and they were so kind, sweet, patient and gentle. It’s never easy to say goodbye to your loved one but when the time comes, I couldn’t imagine it happening any better than it did today. I’m so thankful for the kind and caring compassion we were shown. I will never forget their kindness and the peaceful manner in which my sweet girl passed.

The Vet and staff here provide compassionate and exemplary care. I have been coming here for more than a year now for my cat’s needs and I have been more than satisfied with their care for my pet and their courteous and prompt customer service.

The whole experience, from the booking to the euthanasia was filled with compassion, kindness and care. Highly recommend them for home euthanasia.

Our Yorkshire Terrier Winston was 16 years and 25 days old. He lived a great life but it was his time to go. A veterinarian attended our house and made Winston at ease before we said goodbye for the last time. Winston took his last breath and the veterinarian was gentle and very respectful to Winston and said his last goodbye. Highly recommend! We miss you Winston!

Lets just say I got a second opinion after visiting this vet and was much more comfortable with the explanation received from the second vet! Think twice fur baby owners!

Addendum - Yes the other vet confirmed the findings, but was definitely more compassionate on the situation, and did not pressure the urgency of getting my little doggy into surgery ASAP, they give a better explanation of the diagnosis with time to digest the information instead of insisting a quick surgery date be set with little explanation. So although they were a higher quote, I went with them because of the compassion and explanation they provided. Sometimes it is not all about a quick buck!

Thanks for the excellent care of our cat-from seeing him within an hour of me calling to providing detailed instructions for how to manage his home care.

I cannot believe some of these reviews on Dr. Jafar. Compassionate? Caring? Please do not trust this quack for your beloved pets final moments. It has taken me quite some time to be able to write this review due to the trauma inflicted on our family. It is much too disturbing and painful to go into details on our experience and I will spare the details but I will ask a question. What kind of compassionate and caring individual would attempt to put your beloved family member in a garbage bag in front of a grieving family? This act alone shows how callous this individual. I highly regret using this service. Please, if you can, use one of the many other people offering the service.

MAJOR MISDIAGNOSIS on the severity of an open wound. Performed a bandaid solution surgery, & missed a MAJOR observation on the wound during the surgery that the next 2 vets easily identified. Had I not second-guessed Dr. J’s diagnosis & brought my pup to a 2nd vet, my pup would have LOST HIS LEG or DIED!

A good portion of the total reviews on this clinic are for end-of-life services that seem to boost up this clinic’s overall rating to be high. However, I wish I had read the negative reviews regarding other services outside of end-of-life services that this clinic provides before bringing in my 1 year old pup in. Lesson learned - take your dog to a full-service hospital for injuries. The service of a full-service hospital may be more expensive but you can trust a full-service hospital will provide a proper diagnosis and treatment.
FACTS: DAY 1: Dog was injured by broken tree branch, Dr. J was kind enough to see us within an hour. Pup was examined, Dr. J pulled a very small piece of wood off the wound & said it appeared to be superficial wound. He offered 2 paths of treatment, both of which I had to keep prying to fully understand the details. 1st: Clean up the wound + antibiotics + go home & let the wound heal by itself or 2nd: Perform a surgery to do thorough inspection & cleaning wound. I decided to go ahead with the more thorough ($$$$) option. Post surgery, pup went home with many stitches, an onesie, & 2 doses of anti-inflammatory. Directions for med were unclear & I had to keep prying for info, all answers were very wishy-washy & inconsistent. Came home after the surgery & dog wouldn’t eat/drink for the rest of the day. Invoice = $550.
DAY 2: Pup inactive all day, still wouldn’t drink but ate 1/3 breakfast. At dinner time - time for 1st dose of anti-inflammatory. Knowing Meloxadin needs to go with food, got pup reluctantly took a few bites, then gave the med. That night, pup managed to lick through the oversized onesie Dr. J sent us home with & pulled off the 1st layer of stitches (in hindsight, this turned out to be a blessing, read below).
DAY 3: Called Dr. J to tell him of all details. He said appetite/drinking was caused by the med as the drug must be administered with a “full” meal (he told us “with food”). I felt uncomfortable with his diagnosis because dog was not eating prior to med. Dr. J insisted it was due to improper use of the drug. He asked us to take pup back there for re-check & injections to regain appetite/drinks. Dr. J re-inspected the wound & said it looked ok“, next step was to go home & keep an eye on it. Pup ate that night but still refused to drink. Invoice = $150.
DAY 4: Pup returned to his lethargic state again, not eating/drinking. That evening, the wound looked infected, called Dr. J, he recommended to take pup to an emergency hospital. At Emergency doc determined a surgery was required to clean out the infection and re-seal the wound again, repeat of Day 1. Doc discovered the much higher severity of the wound RVH reported. Dr. J failed to notice the addit’l piece of wood inside which penetrated down into the abdominal tissue; pup required special surgeon at special hospital for more invasive procedure. Poor pup went for the 3rd surgery in 4 days. Day 4 invoices = $6000.
Speaking with the surgeon specialist, she told me had I followed the Day 1-3’s diagnosis, my pup would have lost a leg or developed a hernia, but likely could have died.

I read here about other owners complaining about misdiagnosis, understand no one is perfect but as owners, we expect when our dogs are opened up for thorough exam & then a recheck 2 days later, the surgeon would not fail to identify crucial issues + wound was not cleaned thoroughly nor was all objects removed from the opened wound before stitched up.

Unfortunately, these review threads don’t allow reviewers to respond to the reviewee‘s responses so I’m sure the clinic will deny a good portion of this. It doesn’t matter, I just wanted to share my own experience with this business and sympathize with other reviewers who had a similar experience.

I'll start this review with how outstanding the service was that we received from the Royal Veterinary Hospital. We made the decision to have an at home euthanasia for our 20 year old cat Fiji. Dr. V. Jafar arrived on time and provided a wonderful service to us and our beloved Fiji. He walked us through the process and what to expect, along with time in between steps to say our final goodbyes. The care and professionalism provided by Dr. Jafar allowed us to be focused on our Fiji and know that her final moments with us were peaceful and comfortable for her. I cannot express how much gratitude I have toward Dr. Jafar and I would highly recommend Dr. Jafar and the Royal Veterinary Hospital for services you may need for your animals.

Just got back from appt with my puppy for ear infection. Dr. Was awesome, knowledgeable, and helped me choose the best treatment plan without extra services not required. I went to him as my regular clinic could not get us in and am glad I did. I would recommend Dr. Jafar and his clinic.

Took our 9 year old Polish Lowland Sheepdog in for her 3rd wellness checkup and vaccinations with Dr. Jafar and couldn't be more pleased with the service of the clinic. Our dog is quite nervous and anxious around strangers, but is far more relaxed at this clinic than she was at the previous clinic we'd had her at since she was a puppy. We are glad that we switched to Royal Veterinary Hospital, and our dog is too. Thanks to Dr. Jafar and his team, we now have peace of mind whenever a visit to the vet is required.

Dr. Jafar is a kind, caring,
compassionate soul. 3 years ago he gently put our 20yr old cat Lily to sleep as it was her time, and yesterday he did the same for our special rescue cat Pixie who lived far beyond initial expectations, but was ready to cross the rainbow bridge. You couldn't possibly ask for better service. Highest recommendation, he truly cares and so respectfully handles a sad situation, that we will never forget. Thank you so much!

We can not thank Dr. Jeff enough for his kind and compassionate care during the recent passing of our beloved 13 1/2 year old Golden retriever Arthur. Dr. Jeff came to our home and supported our wish to have Arthur pass in his favourite spot in our back yard. Dr. Jeff was so accommodating, calm, supportive, and genuine. It was his first time meeting Arthur, and he treated him with so much love and respect. Arthur meant SO much to us, and we couldn't have asked for a better person to take care of him during his final moments on earth. A huge heart-felt thank you from our family to you.

Dr Jafar came to my house to do an end of life for my daughter’s aging dog Nakita, he was so kind and calm and gentle. He showed compassion and even kissed her at the end. I would highly recommend him to anyone that is in need of this service. Thank you Dr Jafar.

Dr. Jafar is very knowledgeable and compationate, and his team are very friendly and helpful. He helped us in emergency situations for my dog while my regular vet couldn't. My dog has had several emergencies such as skin rashes, diarrhea, got into chocolate, and ear infections. All the time they booked my dog right away and my dog was back to normal very fast. Thank you for all you do.

I am very happy to find this vet. My dog had a very bad bloody diarrhea and they booked her right away. My dog was back to normal the next day after treatment!
12 September 2021 20:14
It was not a good experience for us. The vet was rude and rough with our 12 week old puppy and picked a scab off prematurely and made her bleed. He missed the scab inside her ear during the initial check-up so I assume he wasn’t very thorough with the check-up either. He only realized that there was a wound after I mentioned and then he just picked at the wound and made it bleed. So then when I called him out he tried to use the fact that we were late as an excuse. Yes, we were a couple minutes late but i called in ahead of time and the vet said it’s completely fine and then he switched up on his words and was very rude and our puppy was feeling very anxious due to his attitude. The fact that he tried to justify making my dog BLEED with a completely irrelevant point really upset me. I did not appreciate the level of customer service nor the medical service and our puppy is going home very scared and traumatized and honestly, so am I. This was our puppy’s very first vet visit and I regret coming here.

I've been twice with my spaniel and I feel extra charges are added on each time I go. For example I paid an extra $10 for booking the day of, which I was told by reception I didnt have to pay (due to the nonurgency matter). Reception will give a quote but the final amount has been higher each time. I think better communication between reception and the vet would help. That being said, I believe this vet is competent, knowledgeable and caring.

The best vet in the town! My dog had a severe skin allergy and the vet did a very thorough treatment plan for him. Highly recommend this place!

I cannot describe how much I appreciate the service of this hospital. My dog was experiencing a painful illness, and the only thing I wanted at that moment was for him to live. So I took him to this hospital, and one of the most well respected men in my life, Dr. Jafar, took him in and healed him within an hour. This is not just a simple appreciation. He saved the life of one of my family members, and it's at that moment when you realize how much you appreciate your doctor. This place has top quality service, is fast and highly reliable, and has a great great great doctor. Thank you. You saved the life of one of my family members. God bless you.

Words can't explain the gratitude I have for this spot. They go out of their way and truly car about your pet. Ive had issues with my 15 year old cat over the past 2 months and have numerous clinics and dealt with multiple doctors. Royal Vet Hospital has rose above the competitors and stepped up beyond comprehension. Their insights make so much sense, and Dr Jafer goes above and beyond for Russ. We will continue to support them as they've supported us.

I do not rate businesses often, but this had to be done.
Highly recommended. <3

I went to this clinic because of all the great reviews on here and was EXTREMELY disappointed. This is our first puppy and didn't know what to expect. We took her in for her 2nd vaccinations and we saw her being taken in put on a counter for 5 mins. She was then taken in. Within 5-8 mins later the vet took her out to our car where we were waiting due to covid. I looked at her records and we were charged for a $70 checkup but they didn't even take her weight? I wonder if they even checked her out! I will NOT be going back.

Dr Jafar came to our house today to do an at home euthanasia service. I cannot thank you enough for the compassion and caring you gave our dog as well as all of us. You took your time and gave us the precious last minutes that we needed. We made the right decision choosing at home euthanasia and we were so blessed finding your clinic. Thank you for the bottom of our hearts

This is a great family veterinary clinic! Dr Jeff and his team are very compassionate, knowledgeable, professional, and truly cares for the well-being of your pets! I have been going to him for years and he has looked after the health and care of all my pets and the pets of my family members and friends as well! Highly recommend you and your pet see him!

Dr. Jafar from Royal Vet was incredibly kind, patient, and understanding regarding my cat's kidney failure and subsequent death in May. Despite being alone in the clinic because his assistants bailed, he stepped up and took above and beyond care of us. He's honest, didn't try to push tests or treatments, and treated the situation with the appropriate gravity and delicacy. He's one of the gentlest and kindest souls that I've met! I get teared up thinking of how honoring he was to us at a time when I was in pain and extremely vulnerable. I can't recommend him enough! His prices are also the most reasonable of any I've found in NW Calgary.

I highly recommend this vet clinic. They were able to see my cat the day I called and provided excellent service. They are reasonably priced and the staff are professional and friendly.

We were recommended Dr. Jafar a few years ago. Since the first day we met, we love him already because he is so kind, so patient, dedicated and truly loves animals. He always makes the treatment plan based on the diagnosis, prognosis, his expertise and our concern and thoughts. We have been bringing our dogs and cat to him in the past few years and will continue to do so even we live on the other side of the town. We have recommended him to our friends, so far they all love him as well, including a friend lives outside the city who travels far away to come to Dr. Jafar. When our dogs were so sick, I remembered that I called him in the middle of the night, or 5 o'clock in the morning, and he answered his phone all the time to provide further plan and arrangement. We would strongly recommend Dr. Jafar for all your furry kids!

I have taken my puppy Abby in
to see Dr. Jafar 3 or 4 times (for mainly ear infections) in the past year. Our family had been seeing another Vet in Calgary since 1991 with other dogs. Now that I live in the NW and the city has grown so much, I have been searching for a new Clinic closer to home. I am completely satisfied with the service and care we have been given by Dr. Jafar. He is quick to assess the problem and provide a comprehensive plan for treatment. I also want to add that he listened to my concerns and I felt included in the treatment plan we created. I would highly recommend Royal Veterinary Hospital for your pets. 5 Stars!

Before opening his Calgary practice Dr. Jafar worked as our part-time vet at the Cochrane and Area Humane Society. As a 19-year volunteer at CAHS I (Marianne Brealey) had the privilege of assisting him in the surgery where I watched him treat all our 4-legged clients with the same gentle respect and outstanding skill whatever the surgical/medical challenge. Now we bring our 13-year old English Springer Tybee to Dr. Jafar. She doesn't see or hear too well but after 5 minutes on his table with a treat or 2 she might as well be relaxing in her dog-bed at home. We have no problem giving Dr. Jafar our highest recommendation.
