Safeway Beltline

Well put together Safeway smack dab in the middle of a modern urban war zone of homelessness. Once you make it inside, all is well and protected. You just have to run the gauntlet on the way in and out. No real violence, just a small army of sad, desperate faces begging for any sort of handout.

This is not exclusive to this Safeway but endemic to the Beltline, especially within 1-2 km of Central Memorial Park aside the Chumir Health Centre with the free needle clinic.
Sadly my office is right in that storm as well.
This Safeway is a better place than most in this area.

I pop in from time to time here. Nice and new fancy self tills always busy but I'm always able to pop in and out quick

I’m a regular and loyal Safeway shopper, but I really feel the need to mention that the large double decker carts that have been added to the stores are way way way too big (I know they’ve been around for a while now)! It is very hard and inconvenient having to cart such large things around the small corners in this store. I’m always on the lookout for the smaller double decker carts which work perfectly for this location. It is extremely inconvenient and nobody ever buys that much stuff from Safeway to have a need for them. Please reconsider the sizes and how large and heavy they are for the size of store being serviced.

I have been shopping here for over 15 years. Lately a few things have bothered me. I shop on either Saturday or Sunday and go right when they open at 7 am. At that time in the morning there will only be 2 or 3 other shoppers when they open the doors. However the "prime" parking stalls close to the one entrance/exit are all full. This would only mean one thing, the employees are taking that prime parking, making the paying customers haul their heavy groceries further. As someone working in retail this would be a serious problem in my place of employment.
The main issue I have in this time of inflated prices is: I check the weekly flyers for sales at both Safeway and Co-op. Safeway normaly has the better prices. And yet when I get there "Beltline Safeway", the shelves with the sale items are empty. If I ask for something specific, they can be accomadating, but tell me to come back in 20-30 minutes as they have to go into the back to find it. The reason I go at 7 am is to be in and out in 15-20 minutes.
Last weekend I went to the Safeway on Elbow Drive and 4th street to find ample parking and fully stocked shelves. It will be my grocery store of choice going forward.

The pharmacy is a joke the service is horrible. I've had so many problems with the pharmacy. There's far to many homeless people around the front if the store.

Self checkouts have soooo many errors that slows the whole thing down. "unexpected bag. Remove item. Wait for assistance. " I'm rather astute at self checkout but it's frustrating to stand there, while a single employee runs around and clears errors.
Security is really annoying, always starring everyone down, like they are Sheriff's and we are prisoners on a chain-gang. If we are all thieves, why are there self checkouts at all?

Also, Pro-tip for customers. Get your bags ready, debit card on top of your wallet, while you're standing inline for ten minutes anyways. And don't stop halfway through the transaction to send a random text. Don't spend ten minutes organizing your backpack, to fit the groceries after your transaction.

Finallly, I wish Safeway could cater to their Beltline demographic with specials? Most of us carry our groceries home, but, the specials are all buy three or more to get the deal. I can't carry that much.

This store used to be a pleasant place to shop with helpful friendly staff. Sadly all that has been gone for months. I know the store is located in a rough area of town, but that is no excuse to be rude and abusive to decent customers. I've worked in the retail and service industries myself, and excellence in customer service attitude and behavior needs to be a top priority. Both in person and on the phone. Grocery shopping should be enjoyable, not causing shoppers to feeling upset or stressed when they leave.

Restroom was out of order and couldn't go when need. There should be spare one when main one in out of order.

This place keeps the Karen's away by not forcing face diapers. If you're that scared stay home.

This grocery store does not take your safety into consideration during this pandemic. Wiping a dry dirty rag across everyone’s self checkout screen just spreads everyone’s germs even more. This would be fine if you could count on the employees doing the regular checkouts to wear a mask but unfortunately that’s not the case. Here you have employees stocking your shelves without masks putting us at risk. You guys are a grocery store, this is food, not just retail. Masks should be required with employees. I understand medical exemptions but there’s no way in hell the 7 employees I counted not wearing masks have one. Nothing but inconsiderate employees and empty sanitizer dispensers.

Safe way is one of the fanciest store in Canada for groceries, desserts, dairy products and different kinds of meat. They have self checkout counter too. No doubt it's kind of costlier than Walmart. Cup cakes are most amazing thing here!

Parking is a joke. A company from Surrey has people on the lot to watch you where if you don't go straight to the store, they will ticket you then you have to contact their office to show them a receipt.

Pharmacy is 5 stars but I hate the set up for the grocery tills; too low, too small, not ergonomic. And surprise surprise, the bathroom was out of order like it usually is when I need to use it.

It's weird to review a grocery store for some reason! But I live near this Safeway and visit a lot and I love it. It's a bit too pricey for my every day groceries but I like to go here for lunch or to pick up something quick. They have a lot of nice options for everything, lots of high end and less high end choices. Some local brands too.

Place has got a nice selection of foods. Only real issue is how confusing the layout may be but other than that, good place to buy groceries.

Super helpful staff and the discount that happens every first Tuesday of the month (when you spend $50+) was a delightful surprise! Visible arrows for covid comfort. Jacqueline at the deli was super busy but took the time to get my order right and weighed my selections to perfection. There was a kind fellow in the produce area also that politely informed myself and surrounding shoppers how to tell when a honeydew was ripe.

Please STOP PUTTING CURRY ON YOUR BBQ CHICKENS. I've been buying a whole BBQ chicken every week from your deli dept for over a decade now. So I'm very familiar with the spices you put on them. Today I opened up the chicken to be assaulted with the smell of curry. If I wanted curried chicken I would buy curried chicken. This is supposed to to be BBQ chicken. Label clearly states this fact.

Convenient if you live in the Beltline or traverse it on the way somewhere. Much smaller location than most other Safeway's so does not carry as much stock and is a rather cramped place to get through, especially with Covid distancing. Prices are usually better than some stores like Coop and SaveOn but are that competitive. Tries to mostly compete with Coop, also in the Beltline.

Usually has stock and a good variety. It is busier considering it location but staff are pretty knowledgeable when you need them

I had to ask 5 different Safeway employees to help me get something from the bakery, only to be told (after a half hour of waiting) that no one on shift was trained to take a cake out of a case. #noIQpoints

I have been shopping at Safeway for the last 30 years and recently moved downtown. I transferred my pharmacy purchases to the store as well.

In my years, Palmer, Pharmacists, is the nicest and most accommodating personnel I have dealt with. I have not seen him have a “bad day”.

Decently fresh produce, mostly nice staff. But the butcher section is frequently completely abandoned mid week at like 5: 00. People are always lined up, nobody ever comes to serve them. It's like the one time you need to be there.

In opposition to Safeway's mask policy, a certain female cashier has decided that customers, like me, who are medically unable to wear a mask deserve to be discriminated against, shamed and shouted at in front of staff and other customers. My solution is to increase my shopping at Save-On-Foods and Superstore. Staff at those places treat me with respect. Please note: my one-star Safeway Beltline review is based on this cashier, not the other employees or management at this Safeway.

Fantastic fresh deli sandwiches. Great ingredients always made with a smile, why would you go to a fast food franchise when Safeway offers better quality and value!

Wow - great job, so much nicer than Northville mall Safeway, better selection, layout, better across the board. And dry aged beef! Check out might be tricky with a bigger shop.

I like shopping here because it has people. There may be times when its slow to. But i like seeing people.

Extremely poor handling of Covid-19 safety. No one at the door ensuring customers are wearing masks and no attempt to limit the number of customers entering the store at a time. Aisles were packed with people many of whom were completely ignoring social distancing rules.

They are short staffing their checkouts resulting in lineups around the store to pay.

For the sake of safety avoid shopping at this Safeway location.

Always good deals, friendly staff, especially at the self checkout. Store is always clean and stocked.

Was having a bad day. Short interaction with the cashier, Atif, was so nice that it turned my day around completely.

Although no one on the Door to maintain how many customers you have in store, also How would you know if customers had sanatized their hands before entering the store, as well as making sure they wear a mask, wasn't sure if the Trollies had been sanatized,

I like this Safeway. I can typically find what I need. My only quibble us that all their non-lactose milk is Natrel and I prefer the slightly sweeter flavor of Dairyland.

Well arranged, but more expensive than most of its competitors.
Only eggs are relatively cheap, and they offer discounts only when the products are close to the expiry dates.
I go there for the lunch though, they are good at that.
