Shibuya Izakaya has been my tried-and-true Japanese restaurant in the city, and although it's getting a bit more expensive to eat there, the quality has remained consistent for over a decade. They have the best spicy tuna/ salmon roll, beef tataki, and I love that the raw oysters are served with ponzu sauce. This has been my go-to order for years and years, and I find it comforting that I can count on the quality to be same as it was when I ate there for the first time.
The parking lot is a bit snug, so I prefer to park in the nearby neighbourhood, which I don't mind because I need to walk off all the delicious food I ate.
This is easily the best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. The food was incredible - I visited a few weeks ago with a small group for a birthday dinner, so I ended getting to sample a little bit of everything. There was not one item I didn't enjoy. The spicy ramen stole the show for me though. It was the sort of dish where I had the thought "I was full a long time ago, but I cannot stop eating".
Also I'd like to share this moment of genuine awe I experienced with the wait staff: our server's mind was like a steel trap. Like I mentioned, I was there with a small group, and we colossally screwed up our order. The bill was being split into two, and we were cross ordering things on different bills, and people not knowing what to order or what certain items were or what have you. So when our server arrived to check in on us, she was faced with a deluge of mistakes on our end resulting in the most chaotic ordering of food I've ever been a part of. Some people were adding or subtracting items and drinks, making modifications to their meal, asking questions about this that or the other, bouncing back and forth between multiple people and by the end of it I was certain we'd have to just start all over. But at the end of all that chaos, without missing a beat, she repeated our entire order back to us flawlessly from memory.
Eat here if you want a dining experience which is delivered to you by people who care about what they're doing at every level.
A very good isakaya. The menu is varied so lots of options to keep everyone happy. I’m Docking a star because the otoro wasn’t cut properly and was chewy, which is disappointing considering it’s price. The kitchen forgot to make one of our rolls so we waited a while for it, but the waitress was on top of it and fixed the problem right away. If I’m in the area, I will definitely eat here but I wouldn’t go out of my way to return. Definitely worth a try!
Great food! Great service! Cannot ask for more! The mobile ordering may take a little getting used to but if you know how to use a smart phone you should be ok.
The sushi is delicious, the cooked food is done perfectly - Salmon Saba highly recommend.baked cheese Oysters; tuna, salmon, hamachi sashimi; beef tataki
Skip the take out and come in to dine! The plating is beautiful! It just looks so appetizing
This cozy restaurant with welcoming ambiance has left the best impression! I liked how extensive was the menu. The web-based ordering system is a big plus, making it easier and faster to order. All ingredients seemed fresh and of a high quality. All sushi rolls we tried tasted great. My favorite roll was the sunrise special roll with a strong smoky flavor. Mango drink had great aftertaste. For dessert we tried hazelnut pear and mix mochi and temp cream puffs, all were delightful and nice finishing touches to a great meal.
Love this place! We had a few nigiri, some Maki and a few rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious. Rice was just the right consistency. The menu and ordering are through your phone, very simple and convenient. Staff is attentive and friendly, with the servers working the restaurant as a team.
We were blown away by the attentive service, excellent tasting and very high quality food. The slightly higher prices are indicative of the value. Chicken karaage was big chunks of real dark meat chicken. Was also impressed with the ordering system, could order and pay from your phone using a QR code. Yet the service was still top-notch, we were checked on often and had everything we needed. We will be back!
Haven't had sushi this good in a long time. Fresh oysters are great! On sale on Tuesday. Every tiny detail was taken care of. The menu and ordering on your phone is kind of neat. Staff is also very friendly and helpful.
The technology they have to order and to pay is impressive, although it is very self check in and self check out, that they are forgetting to check on the tables if something is missing.
Top Shelf! The best Sushi I've had in almost 10 years outside of Japan and Vancouver. I bet there's better, but this is there! Might want to bring some extra money though. EXPENSIVE!
Amazing oysters. Love the taste. Baby octopus tasted delicious as well with its crispiness and the sauce. But the dynamite rolls were a bit disappointing and the salmon kama could have been more crispy.
Food has good quality, stuff are friendly. But keep in mind of one thing, they are now offering online Manu and online ordering, but since the shop wifi request to log in your Facebook account to use, you would not be able to order anything there unless you do have your Facebook account or data network, worst order experience ever
First time coming here and loved the food. Food came out relatively fast, and service was very nice. Unfortunately the parking was a little tight, but I would definitely eat here again.
If you want delicious sushi in Calgary then definitely stop in here! Service was great, the food came quick and was absolutely fantastic! I would 10/10 recommend to a friend. Get the lobster roll! I promise its worth the money. The only thing that keeps this from a 5 star review is the ordering system. The menu is on your phone and you also order from your phone but once the order is placed you can't see the order history. All in all its minor and really I'd go 4.8 out 5 if possible.
Reasonable quality but priced like a premium experience. My partner and I left still feeling hungry despite spending $70. Hard to justify making this a regular thing.
Great restaurant staff and amazing food. I think the only downside here is the pricing. It's definitely a more upscale cost compared to your average sushi restaurant. I wish we could rate additional features but just keep in mind when you're dining. 6 of us went and ordered just enough. Bill came to almost 600 with tip.
Really great. Always a solid option. Parking is a little tight, but you can hide in the neighborhood if you need to. Everything can be ordered via a QR code menu on your phone, Izakaya style, as you want it, on your phone. My biggest gripe is that some dishes that would be vegetarian-friendly like tofu have fish eggs on them and don't have the option to remove them in the digital QR menus. So, some customization, or clarity if that's already available, would be nice. Otherwise, everyone here is lovely, helpful, prompt, and things are tasty and affordable. Go next door for Bubblemania afterwards!
One of my fav places for Japanese food. Service is friendly and food is always consistent and delicious. Salmon Tataki is a MUST! I also love how they do tempura. The batter is light and gives a satisfying crunch. Their noodle dishes (udon, yakisoba, ramen) are amazing as well!
There was not much people in the restaurant but they were guarding us like hawks. My friends and I felt uncomfortable and rushed, as they kept clearing the table every three minutes. Food was alright but service was subpar.
Well, I came to get a ramen and it was quite busy. I understand that I was alone and the only wmpty table they had, was for 4 people. They told me it is full house right now, see you next time. Money over loyalty. Never coming here again, only because they do not value customers.
Best sushi/sashimi in the city. And some of the best options for cooked food. You need to try the kama and the black cod and the grilled ikayaki. They also make amazing sushi cakes. The rice in the sushi cake is flavored with crab meat. So so so good
Me and my family walked into this place and the weren’t open so we went to grab some slurpees for the wait and when the opened we walked in and they wouldn’t let us sit with the drink they told us to leave it in the car to melt or they said to throw it out when it was felled to the top so we left very disappointed.
The food was great and staff are friendly but I tried the sesame ice cream and it was not great and I wasted the ice cream, but I do recommend the lychee ice cream!
We love coming here. The service is always great and we love the food here.
Typically creatures of habit, I actually tried something on their menu we don't normally get: creamy upon. Omfg. It is just so delicious. I cannot believe I been missing out on this for so many years.
I always order the raw shrimp with fried heads (eat the heads, it's delicious), beef tataki and truffle king oyster mushroom sushi.
The quality of their fish is amazing and they often bring in seafood fresh from Japan seasonally. We tried to Otoro today - it was so decadent and buttery.
Been here many times and it's usually a good experience. Visited here yesterday, spent 100 dollars and was there for under 2 hrs, still had wine in my glass when we were asked how long we would be until we were done as there was a larger party waiting to be seated. There was 7-8 empty tables and I'm sure those could have been re- arranged? The comment was rude and definitely put me off. Probably won't be visiting her again any time soon.
One of the best sushi restaurant in town. The staffs are always friendly. Taste and portioning are great and if you are a cone lover like me, they have one of the greatest selections of cones available in town. Some of the specials are pricy but well worth the dollars spent on it. Highly recommend the Blue Fin O Toro!
All I have to say is WOW. This place is honestly a hidden gem. I developed a sudden craving for cold udon noodles after having had them in Japan in 2015 and I decided to look up a place in Calgary that serves them. I found this place and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of all of their food. I came with my parents and we tried the takoyaki, tempura, miso soup, cold udon and yaki udon, a variety of sushi rolls, and the mochi ice cream. Everything was delicious. I truly felt like I was back in Japan. The miso soup could have had a bit more flavour, but that's really my only complaint.
Overall, the entire experience, from the quality of food to the ease of ordering on their QR Code site, and even to the choice of music played in the restaurant was superb. We will definitely be back.
I had previously given these guys a 5 star rating, but have noticed the quality of their food going downhill.
The last two times I've ordered from them, their rolls have been soggy and fallen apart
Their prices are more expensive than other sushi restaurants, and previously I could justify it because they were better quality, but now I don't believe this to be the case
I ordered some sashimi and sushi through the Shibuya app last week. I ordered at 7: 00pm and scheduled to pickup 8: 10pm. I arrived 8: 15pm, food still wasn’t ready. Was told to wait in the car. One of the girls brought out the food at 8: 35pm. Not very happy waiting for 30mins for my food.
(EDIT in bracket: Okay I am changing my rating higher to 3 star since there was a very nice response from the owners. So actually we went quite a few months ago, before Covid takeout-only restrictions, I think sometime in September of last year. I just did some searching in the menu and found that the Udon I was talking about is called the "Creamy Yaki Udon". And looks like plus tax it was $14 something so close to what I mentioned. It did not have any meat or vegetables in it, was a small portion, and with just plain noodle in that creamy cheesy sauce. Anyways, I appreciate the explanation and response, but I guess the Udon was simply not what we expected in terms of price-quality comparison. We did also order a roll of sushi and some other appetizer which was just okay.)
The price was way too expensive for below average quality food. Service was decent but nothing special. We ordered a Udon noodle with clam chowder/cheesy flavor, and it was like 15 or 16 dollars and super simply made, while not filling at all! We spend over 50 dollars (for two people) and was still kind of hungry afterwards. Not recommended, will not go again.
Food is absolutely delicious! I find myself eating here at least a few times a month. During covid we would always order takeout, but I’m glad they now offer dine in because the food taste even better when it’s fresh. The food is a little pricey, but I think it is definitely worth it. The sushi is such great quality. They have a huge menu with lots of variety in sushi which I appreciate. They also have lots of cooked food. You’ll probably end up spending more than you’d think just because the food is so good and you’ll want to order everything on the menu! Staff are super polite and service is fast! Would 100% recommend!
We ordered a "Shashimi sampler platter 12 pieces" for $36. Unfortunately, two of the pieces were just lumps of salmon roe rather than cuts of fish. We felt that this was somewhat poor value.
This place is my preferable restaurant. Of all restaurants I know I like it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to this restaurant.everytime I I need a proper meal, this place comes right away to my mind.outstanding and all sorts of food and a large menu.trained crew, and good atmosphere. Also important, the expence is fair. I tell about this restaurant with no doubt.
This place is unquestionably one of the most pleasant place in the region. Always when I come there I am extremely happy. They maintain their very high standard service and the topmost level of food they provide. You surely will enjoy this this place. Warmly recommended.
They’ve been around for a long time and there’s a good reason for that. They are consistently good with a wide selection of quality Japanese delicacies. They are always trying out new menu items. It may be a sushi and Izakaya type of Japanese food but their Ramen will surprise you. The miso ramen soup base is excellent. Oh and that egg
Large menu, so there's plenty of choice. Always busy, so be sure to make a reso. Parking is a huge pain though as it shares a small parking lot with bubblemania. Just go park on the street to save yourself the hassle.
Great izakaya catering to the local Japanese and wider Asian-Canadian community. The food was all great, authentic, and surprisingly affordable. The staff were friendly and helpful and the service was quick. Overall a better experience than the more upmarket izakaya I have visited in Canada, and it was more affordable. If I am in the area again I will definitely come back.
Nice quiet place with good food.parking is kind of tough but there's a big parking lot beside the plaza where tons of people park.great service, will go back again.
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Calgary, and thankfully it's right down the street from my house! Definitely the best beef tataki I've ever had in Calgary! Come here almost every weekend.
So good! Big portions. Fresh everything. Price matches the quality. Service is perfect and friendly. They are open all day as well (doesn't close between lunch and dinner service)
I am from Calgary but I live in Toronto. I always make sure to visit Shibuya Izakaya atleast once or twice when I fly back home. It is so worth it and the quality of the fish is the best here. My favourite items are the Ikura (salmon roe), Tuna and Green Onion roll, Ika (squid), Tako Wasabi, and Sake (salmon). I can drink a whole green tea pitcher when I’m there!
This place is famous for their beef tataki. The sushi and other dishes is not bad too. The last time I came I got the grilled calamaro and house special roll. The calamari was chewy and crunchy with teriyaki sauce. The house special roll had salmon and tuna which is nice. It is pretty popular and gets busy on friday and saturday nights so expect to wait a while. At the end you get the bill with some hi chew candy!
There is a nice bubble tea place right nice door as well so you can chill there after.
Honestly, best sushi restaurant in town. It all starts with comfortable seating, welcoming atmosphere, friendly and knowledge staff, great selection of food to order, and ends with unbelievable quality! The parking lot gets quite busy around 6: 30/7 so just park on the streets around. This place is everything and more! Jenny, the owner, does an incredible job in running this place! Highly recommend!
The sushi was pretty good but the service wasn't great. I won't fault them though because they were pretty busy and I think a little under staffed at the moment but overall a great experience. The salmon was great as well as the yellow tail and I would definitely come back again. I just hope that the next time we show up we don't have to wait as long as we did before but always willing to give it another shot.
Good food but be prepared to pay as it's a bit pricey. Also check your bill before paying. One particular server has a habit of adding a 20% tip if you do not check. Go during lunch, then you can enjoy the Bento box which is value for money.
Really impressed with this place. Great service (but they dont make small chat or check in as most service staff does - found it very similar to Japan service) and amazing food. Great range of dishes and everything was tasty. Tea was delicious as was the sake. The atmosphere is casual but good.
I would definitely recommend! Its busy for good reason.
Had a great experience here. My fiance and I eat plant based and the servers were extremely knowledgeable and was able to explain the menu thoroughly to us. Owners also very receptive to feedback and always bringing in new items.
We were greet with a very nice lady and she set us up to a nice little corner. She was busy with another table so another lady served us. They were not busy at the time and it takes them a while to take our order. The second lady seem not very happy to served us. We were new in Calgary and this is our first time dine here so she did not even suggest anything. Every table when customers came in were served with soups and we did not get any offers on anything. Every time the second lady bring our orders out she was just very plain and did not says a word but when she brought it for another table she treats them very friendly and happy smile. After finish eating a third lady came over to clean up our table and she spilled soy sauce on my very expensive jacket.she did not offer any apology and she quickly clean my jacket off thinking we would not notice.she left a huge mark on my jacket and now i can not wash it off. Overall the food was good but because of the bad servers they ruined our experience. Would not recommend this place if you are new in town.
I reviewed this before, but I don't know where it went.
I can't give great detail after this time, but I will return to re-evaluate.
From what I recall it had been the best sushi in Calgary (The fish itself may not have been as premium as some of the others, but it is up there. Mostly it was the delicious and unique flavours that were reminiscent of Sushi in Japan). Also the server was fantastic, and the atmosphere was warm but still fairly.chic?
Parking was a pain though, it's a small strip mall, with nowhere enough spots, they would probably do well to move.or at least recomment alternative parking locations.
We have been frequent diners of Shibuya for a very long time; probably from when it first opened for business. The service and quality of food has always be top notch. Its a little expensive for our family but we look at it as a special treat each time. The last 2 visits I noticed I no longer see the owner Jenny. And last week for lunch there were only 2 servers. We recognized the senior server Lisa and she is amazing at her job. It was busy and I feel bad for the servers because they were literally running to get to each customer. On top of that, the 'skip a dish' delivery guy comes in to pickup and take up one of the servers. This is a sign of neglect and deterioration of a once well managed business. Its unfair to the servers; they will burn out very soon. Jenny where are you? Please take care of your employees and customers. You have loyal customers like us. However, that loyalty can't be taken for granted. A broker reputation will cost you way more to fix later than spending consistent time and energy to manage your business on a day to day basis. I will visit one more time in the near future and see if things have improved or are getting worst and will provide update here.
My wife and I came during our vacation to Banff and we were really impressed! We both felt the quality of the food and overall experience was as good as, if not better than, our go-to sushi restaurant in the SF Bay Area.
The miso cod was melt-in-your-mouth tender and perfectly flavored. The lobster tempura roll was beautifully presented and delicious (although we thought it might've been soft-shell crab). The tuna and salmon sashimi came as nice big slices and fresh. And the clam miso soup was tasty, with a generous amount of clams.
Excellent food - excellent service. Maybe a bit on the pricey side.but overall a great experience. Busy place - may have to wait depending on your arrival time.
Bubblemania (business next door) is a busy place making parking annoying.
