Museum large 5 floors. We were with a 5 year old child. Very changeable feeling, not enough. It seems there are many floors, the room is large, but everything is somehow empty. Didn't make the most of the space. Add stands for playing musical instruments, even more interactive stands for children. We came once, there is nothing more to do in this museum
There were lots of wonderful exhibits and lots of interesting displays of Canada's very best artists; most of the artists were very new to me, so it was a wonderful learning experience. The 3rd floor, which is the interactive floor, is closed due to covid, but it doesn't take away from the experience - there's still plenty to see. Plus, admission is free every weekend until December 26,2021.so I'd definitely recommend you check it out to get a taste of Canadian music history!
Excellent place to go see. It's a big snapshot of Canadian music history. A floor was closed during my visit but the entrance was free. Well worth whatever they charge on a regular day and this summer admission has been free. My advice is to take advantage of that and give this place a visit!
I came with my family as part of a free weekend. It would definitely be with it to pay to come back, but without the younger children (6 & 7) because they had no interest in the museum. They moved so fast I didn't get to read much of the fascinating information. The 9-year-old was just old enough to properly enjoy it.
In my short visit, I particularly enjoyed the theremin interactive exhibit and all the antique instruments. The clothing was super cool too.
This was very interesting. Went with the family and we all enjoyed ourselves finding out about music history in general and seeing instruments over hundreds of years old.
Building is beautiful. Interesting displays and some live music.but no hands on yet with covid so hard to keep kids interested as there is a lot of reading and items behind plexiglass which have little meaning for young ones. We enjoyed it but wouldnt take kids under 8 or 10. We wanted to read more but kids curtailed that. Lots of parking. Lots of stairs to climb between the 5 floors. There is an elevator if needed.
As soon as you walk through the doors, you are greeted and give you instructions on where to go. They are very friendly and courteous. If you need to take a group picture just ask and they will do it for you.
It was a great visit. Matt Blais was performing when I visited, and his voice was very beautiful to listen to. There are various kinds of instruments on display, too. If I knew about Canadian singers more, it would be much more enjoyable, though.
Free admission these days! The building is awesome. The expos are good enough, better than expected. Unfortunately one of the levels is currently closed. Overall it is a 2-hour experience. Obviously worth the visit with free admission.
The third floor and one of the sides was closed when I went there. Some of the interactive activities were fun for the kids, but otherwise a quick walkthrough and yours done.
Didn't know that this place existed. Was just staying one night in Calgary and someone here told us to go and visit it. So glad we did. The exhibits were great very nostalgic and the building itself was designed very well. Cool architecture!
This place is the mecha of Canadian Music. I was part of the building project, and the re-build of the King Edward Blues Bars, and it was awesome working on this new shining jewel for Canadian Musicians. I advise anyone that is into or does music to check this beautiful place out.
I'm glad they have a plan for social distancing. I came here once before the pandemic, and love it. It was different from last time but made me feel safe being around people
This is a great place to visit, some of the interactive touch exhibits are obviously not out right now but there are still 5 floors of Canadian music history to explore with photos, info, instruments, touch free interactive exhibits, live performances, very fun way to spend an afternoon.
Beautiful bldg. Lots of stairs to the 5 floors. There is an elevator if required. With covid 1 and 1/2 a floor closed. Mainly the interactive areas. There has been a lot if work into the displays. Interesting. Not a place for younger children. Lots to read and kids will rush you. Kids prob wont appreciate the displays. We did. There was some live music was nice. I wouldnt bring kids younger than 8 unless interactives are open.
Better enjoyed when the interactive exhibits are open. Great collection and presentation. Cool gift shop. Resident musicians perform. 10% off at King Eddy if you go the same day as your studio Bell tickets.
This was the worst "museum" I've ever been to. Not even sure what this place really is. Luckly I got in for free because this place was disappointing. Very few exhibits and what they had wasn't very interesting. Nice building and friendly staff but don't waste your money. Seems like the type of place that just gets rented out by the wealthy for parties.
Visiting was one of the absolute highlights of 2019 for me. The museum is so densely packed with incredible items of Canadian music history, it made me cry in a couple places, mainly the "Icons Hall" and the exhibit featuring Geddy Lee's basses. Some of the information on the placards were either out of date or downright false, and I feel there was a good deal of empty space that could've been filled with something, but neither of these points took away from my enjoyment one bit. I think it is easily one of the must see museums in Canada, and I can't recommend this place enough!
I didn't expect it, but it was a really great visit. (It was not today, though) They've displayed musical instruments by type, genre, and period. Also, the costumes of the musicians were displayed. That part was my fave one. I had no idea that I would see an exhibition about fashion at YYC. Another best thing was the fit music flows into the exhibition space with each concept. It was an exhibition where eyes and ears were pleasant.
The touch screen and headset have been discontinued due to the COVID19, so you cannot hear the many instruments. Nevertheless, it was a great time for me. They often hold concerts, and I hope to visit again to listen to their concert next time.by @asella_de
Nice to visit for the fashion exhibits and architecture but the interactive parts are missed due to covid19 restrictions. We will visit again once it's all over with
