This place used to be soo good years ago and was my go to for sushi. Lately you can't even get someone to answer the phone to place an order. I've ordered online but had nobody accept my order for over 30 mins leaving me stranded for lunch during my break. When I called to cancel my online order again nobody there to pick up.so I had to drive in, cancel in person and take my business elsewhere.also their California rolls used to have real crab meat but now they use imitation.their momiji rolls used to be big now they're smaller and mostly rice. There are other sushi places downtown that deserve my hard earned money over this dump.
Ate here for ayce, served us less than what we ordered.items were missing. Slow service even at dinner time and only another couple was eating when we were there.
Food and service quality has gone down the last past few visits, missing food items from our, food taking too long even when resto is almost empty will reassess again next time but will be a while before we visit again after a few disappointing visits
August 2023: This review doesn't reflect the AYCE experience, just the standard menu. I came during dinner time. The sushi was decently priced, but the quality was not there. The fish to rice ratio was not good, the fillings were mostly tempura, and the tempura inside was stale. The tuna was also not fresh and was dry.
Was a great spot to check out. Different selection than Calgary for sure and they had given us excellent vibes when me and Rhonda Christine Ironstand came here
Came here with my friend and the food was okay. Everything was coming out at a good pace and was tasting good. Only problem is when I was paying, I noticed the server added herself a $20 tip which is a 30% tip.
Was one of our go to spot for years but with terrible staff and food quality gone down to toilet it’s a disgrace for even any restaurant standard. Close this place down already. They’ll charge you automatic 20% “tip” for having 5 people fyi which no one deserves
It's pretty decent, but be very aware of the filings of the rolls you order. They've started using a lot of deep fried crumb as filling. It's not great.
The snapper I had this evening was absolutely rank, although their produce is normally fresh.
Food is great! Service is disgusting! The waiter was so bold, careless, not talkative, not welcoming, even in food inquiries she rudly reply I don't know. We had to grap our napkins. She never check on us! Just went to hid at the back chatting. She was blond around teen age Asian girl. And she won my award of the most terrible waiter ever seen. Please watch who you hire and how you train. We go to restaurants to buy food and service. Such a shame! And very disappointing. We were friendly couple yet the service was terrible I wish I can give it a 0.
02 July 2022 around 19pm ; went there with my mom asked can my mom use washroom by the way my mom is old and with several medical conditions, she can’t hold the pee. The workers said without hesitation it is not public washroom without noticing the severity of my mom’s old age. Workers of Kyoto Sushi wants money and created rules you not a customer not public washroom. But in no way they want to help communities. Then we went to Burger priest I repeated the same Question to the Priest Burger and they gave the washroom key to my mom. It is human to have pity but Kyoto will not understand that.
Great place for great food. The price of the sushi is fair and cheaper than anywhere else (I checked). The atmosphere and the people are great too. I highly recommend THIS place for you sushi needs.
Had lunch. Poke bowl with rice was pretty good. The beef tataki was not so much. Very little sauce, even after asking for extra sauce it wasn't enough. They give you a tiny side of sauce to begin with. The rolls we ordered had way too much rice. Good if you are looking for value
Tables werent wiped down, smelled like tiger balm and mold all through the place and the staff was cold and unfriendly
Come to this location if you want to fall ill The Garneau area one is by far the best and most clean. Make the extra five minute trip to see how the experience is supposed to be
My new favorite sushi shop. Salmon sushimi was some of the best I've ever had and good sized pieces. Staff were friendly and attentive. No complaints, great little place. We will be back.
My go to order from Tanuki is pretty simple. Toro sushi, avocado sushi, and tempura. I always enjoy the quality of the toro. Whenever I have a craving for it, I go here. The Avocado sushi always has an ideal buttery ripeness and looks pretty in presentation. Mixed tempura comes with shrimp, salmon, yam, eggplant and squash. I haven’t been for dine in for quite some time, just delivery. I will say that I wish the packaging could prove slightly for that, for avoiding leaks/soggy food upon delivery.
Well established sushi restaurant with great service and very good portion sized of fish. The prices at first seemed a little high, but the portion size of fish on nigiri pieces or even sashimi is at least 30-40% more than most other restaurants. My tuna nigiri was like eating tuna steak on top of the rice, it was amazing.
I loveeee this place. It’s my fav. For years. The hibachi shrimp and the hibachi shrimp sauce is unreal. The house salad dressing is unreal. The bean sprout salad is unreal. Service is fast and food is fast which I love cuz I’m always super hungry when I go there.
Last time, nice soft Japanese music, nice atmosphere, good service, good food, nice bathroom. This time loud rock music, bad atmosphere, bad service, awful food, bathroom needs work.
1) Food wasn't good. Sushi was almost pure rice. Tataki didn't feel right.
2) Staff couldn't give us any useful information on what to order or how much was enough for 2 people.
3) The last call to order was at 9: 30, at 9: 50 they turned off the music and brought us the bill, without we asking for it. It felt like an invitation to leave, which Is not reasonable if you can still order and enter the restaurant at 9: 30.
Start of another set of restrictions was imposed when I came to this place. Strictly no dining in. I was a take out, walk-in customer. Parking space is shared by several establishments. Service was fast, service crew was polite.
Excellent Bento box lunch, tried the new poke salad, very good as well. Service was a tad slow, which is why no five star today, but very cheerful. We will be back!
The sushi is terrible, udon noodles seemed tasteless and not authentic, it was not worth what I paid for. Portions were small with soggy rice. I was pretty disappointed tbh which is sad as I have read such good reviews. Not worth the money. Better go somewhere else where it is more authentic and better value for your money.
It used to be a good sushi place, before changing its name (ownership?). Now for a premium price it provides less than what you can get at Save on Food, with all rolls (over) filled with cheap, crispy, tempura. I do not write reviews often, but the "new" Kyoto was a big disappointment for somebody that loves good sushi.
Found 2 separate pieces of plastic and a fish bone over 4 rolls. 25% uncontaminated, not a good start. 2 of the rolls were ice cold, flavourless, and pre-made like they had been sitting in the fridge all day, all the sauce had soaked in and the green onions were dried out because of this. Very disappointing because I love the other Kyoto by Garneau, it’s not even comparable. Please take some notes from the Garneau Kyoto and do better
The sushi was delicious, our server was very nice and attentive, and the atmosphere was. Overall, a great dining experience. Next time, I'm coming for their Saturday morning all you can eat!
This Kyoto and the Kyoto on 109th St by the University used to be owned by the same owner. But then for whatever potentially dramatic reason, they split, and this one became "Tanuki Kyoto Sushi", which they clearly pulled out their rear because Tanuki means some sort of Asian Racoon, and has nothing to do with Kyoto, but they didn't want to lose the branding. Could've changed it to the other 2 largest cities in Japan, ie, Tokyo or Osaka Sushi and it still would've been fine. But whatever.
Anyway, sadly, this is probably one of the better sushi places in Edmonton. The food isn't bad, and definitely better than Mikado just down the road. Price is better than them too, but prices are also more expensive than the other Kyoto Sushi by the university.
Also if they ever get any specialty items shipped in from Japan, don't bother. I once tried their limited special otoro from Japan for $8 a piece, and it was probably the worst tasting otoro I've ever had in my life.
They forgot my order. Went there at lunch hour. Both of us ordered sushi at the same time. Her sushi came out. Mine did not. I thought it was coming out within a couple of minutes and then my friend said did they forget about you? I didn't order anything overly complicated, a vegetable sushi roll. The worst part was no apology, for obviously forgetting my order! I wont be coming here again.
We love going out. Last night we found this magnificent place which friends told us about. We enjoyed a beautiful time there with great meal and a professional stuff and a great cuisine. We added this venue in our phone list and we shall definitely come back soon. We deeply recommend.
I adore this restaurant! They prepare superb food, they have a nice menu, The chef in that spot is an expert, I enjoy a lot trying all their dishes. The food is always of high class, the service towards the guests is good. I often eat in this restaurant and I was never unhappy. I recommend it with no hesitation.
I'm not an expert sushi connoisseur, but this was good sushi. Maybe not amazing, but bang for your buck wise, it was delicious. The box meals were tasty as well, the Japanese tea was delightful, and service was prompt and polite. Would recommend to try.
So good I love this place I would recommend everything in the menu not one thing is not good. I come here pretty often and pretty much tried everything and I can't say there is one bad thing on the menu I have tried
Sushi was fairly good and the service was quick, but very unfriendly.
Edit: Updating from 3 stars to 5! Went a second time and the service was lovely. She was so kind and sweet and the food was amazing! Was like night and day, very happy we went again.
So I’ve eaten here 2/3 times and the food was okay. But I really liked the mango roll so kept coming back. Recently started working downtown and ordered from skip and got the hurricane maki cone which is described as slices of salmon and crawfish and it arrived with literally 0 salmon and this was $6 for one piece. Like what? Second, idk if there’s a new chef or new owners or what but my maki roll has more veggies than fish and I feel like I’ve been robbed of what I thought was going to be a lovely meal. Even when I have dined in service wasn’t rude but she never checked on us, just gave us the food, left, came with bill only after I asked at the counter. All in all, work on consistency.
Food was okay, bento box came with lots of options. But seriously the server named Rona (short lady with short hair) would need to improve her service. She always looked annoyed, like she didn’t want to be here or something. Jesus there was only 3 tables in the restaurant including us, no need to be like that.
I usually get some basic salmon sushi and seaweed salad to-go, quality is fine. But I lol at the quality of these weak chopsticks - if they're gonna skimp on this, what else are they skimping on. Last time I went, one of the waitresses was rude, like honey we all do it, just do it in the kitchen where no one paying can hear.
Hit and Miss - Beware that the sushi chef may scrimp on quality ingredients and the management could care less about your complaints. So while most of the dishes that we ordered were good, there was one that was particular bad and left a very bad experience for us. High probability that we won't be going back, as there are tons of other restaurants nearby that truly care about customers.
The Poke Salad was very good, but the pricing was different depending on which menu you were looking at. The Tiger Roll was delicious, but it fell apart too easily.
The Rainbow Roll consisted of almost all tempura crumbs inside the roll, and barely any Masago (Fish Roe), completely misleading from that shown on the photo of the menu. I pointed this out to the waitress, but she and the sushi chef and management could care less about my complaint. Rather they insisted they only put a teaspoon of Fish Roe in the entire Rainbow Roll, but what I have seen its more like they used only 1/3 of a teaspoon the entire roll, and they never even bothered to fix the order and would rather choose to just let the customer walk away unsatisfied.
There was another "Kyoto" Japanese restaurant on 8701 109 Street, that did exactly the same thing, by completely screwing with the customer and scrimping out on quality ingredients, by using 100% crumbs on the inside of Maki Rolls. Pretty disgusting if the intent is for these Japanese restaurants to try to get away with it.
Wonderful atmosphere and super amiable service. The food was crisp and enchanting. Will surely recommend this spot to anyone. Reasonable prices and large meals. Great work.
Terribly over priced and quality significantly declined since name changed. Most rolls have more tempura crumbs than actual fish. Very skimpy on fish portions that was not that fresh. Service was terrible. I pre ordered for take out by phone, tried to ask for help when I arrived from the 2 staff members working the counter whom saw me but ignored me even when I spoke to them. Understand they themselves can't help me but they didnt even bother to call out to staff in the back. Waited 5 minutes before someone came to help. Even though I ordered by phone, they charged me skip the dish delivery prices. Won't be going back again. Tons of better places in town.
This is my favorite sushi place in Edmonton. I have tried many but this one is the best for overall taste, price and service. If you like sashimi, the tuna martini is fantastic, and the makis such as momiji roll and Mexican are also superb.the isobe is great if you like no rice, and my only wish they would have an all you can eat menu
This spot gives awesome service and yummy menu. My favourite spot ever. The food served rapidly and the prices were inexpensive. I recommend this place.
The staff here are the best! Fun and friendly. The food is so good, I haven't ever had a bad meal. The bento boxes are a little more creative, which is nice. Sushi is very good. Only been here for lunch, but I keep going back!
One of my favs go to for Japanese meals. My friends and I love this place and we consider it one of our top 5 places.
Food can be pricey for some though we consider it reasonable for what goes into it. If they ever start limiting portions and make well-known dishes smaller like most, then we might just have to penny pinch and go else where like we did many others.
I, we really hope it doesn't come to it.
I will keep treating myself to this location as long as the market doesn't effect management thinking.
My wife and went here for lunch today. The rice for the nigiri was extremely mushy with so much sushi vinegar it over powered the fish. That in itself was probably a good thing due to the fish smelling and tasting like it was off. When we left and explained that the lunch was horrible nothing was said and I could here one of the servers giggling in the back when the food was returned. Just another pseudo Japanese restaurant serving mediocre food, stay away. Stick to Wasabi which is actually an Authentic Japanese restaurant
Really amazing Service and Food. Love the oysters and beef tataki. Bento boxes are also a huge plus from this restaurant. If you like japanese food, I would definitely recommend Tanuki Kyoto Sushi.
We haven't been to this location before, but came here tonight because we received a gift certificate. After eating our meal and asking for the bill, we were told that we were not allowed to keep the rest of the balance because gift card was a one time use only; the restaurant keeps whatever is left. This "policy" is not written anywhere on the gift card. The only thing mentioned on the card was "N. B. No Credit and no refund". This is problematic because a) stating no credit and no refund could imply the card itself is meaningless, or that it has no cash value. In other words, it is too vague of a descriptor. Gift cards, according to law, must state the terms and conditions clearly to prevent misleading consumers.b) Taking ($40) more than what the consumer spent on the meal is also against Alberta Gift Card Laws.
According to the servers, they have gotten into a lot of trouble because the restaurant punishes them if they don't enforce this unwritten and unclear policy. Therefore, they really pushed us to pay them now, and use the gift card another time. We let them know that they need to communicate to their boss about this whole not-honoring-the-gift-card-balance system and how this is an unethical treatment of their customers. After talking to two different staff, we were given $34 dollars back because the servers recognized the establishment's downfalls. At the end of the night (probably 30 mins), the server apologized for the inconvenience. The interesting thing was that they deducted their own tip from the amount we were supposed have left in our balance.
The food was decent. I prefer the other Kyoto (the one by the university) Don't think we would be back to this downtown location because of these practices though.
Well prepared food is always expected here and solid, friendly service. Every time I go I am delighted by the care taken in preparing and serving fine food.
Had great service! Our order was taken promptly, the server came back to check on the table frequently and she was very pleasant. I Had the katsu curry and my friend had a poke bowl, we were both very satisfied with the quality and portion. Would for sure go again!
Good service but need to work on dish presentation. Food taste was overall meh. Ordered pork curry, meat tasted old.or maybe over cooked? Not sure if I will come back.
