Tunnel Mountain Trail

Great view from the top. A pretty easy hike up, then down the hill. We did it with our 5 year old who got tired towards the end.

Good hike but very steep. For exercise it’s a great route to take. Views on the top are good but not on the journey up

This is a must do hiking trail in Banff. It's quite short but does require a little bit of effort. The trail is well travelled with many tourists and locals using it everyday. You can hike it year round. Although you will need a good pair of ice cleats in the winter. There are no bathrooms at the trailhead but there is adequate parking. Beautiful views of Banff down below.

Best tunnel we've ever been to. 10/10 would come again. Admittedly it took us some searching, but when we found it we were just blown away by its size and unique geological features.

Incredible early morning hike, steep in places but only about 40 minutes to the summit (average fitness and a pensioner). Brilliant views over Banff, the surrounding mountains and Bow valley, well worth the visit though a walking pole would be advised

Easy hike with some elevation. Very family-friendly. Might take an hour and a half to two hours with a lunch break at the top, so it's overall a very easy summit with great views. The elevation gain isn't ever difficult or overly steep. Poles not necessary.

Hiking Tunnel Mountain was a great way to start my morning. I hit this trail just before 7 am and for the most part, had it to myself on the way up, there was only one other person at the top when I arrived. On the way down is when I hit the traffic coming up. But there is plenty of mountain to go around, and I am sure it is worth hiking at any time of the day.
The hike is not super tough, but it took this Fatman a few stops to catch my breath on the way up. You will find some amazing views of the town, and the lodge, and on the other side of the mountain is the golf course area. Truly spectacular vistas!

Great hiking trail with beautiful views of downtown Banff from the top. There is a small parking lot at the base, but would recommend walking there as it seems to get full easily. We stayed at Douglas Fir, which is around 15 minutes from the start of the trail.

Construction going on at this time at the base of the trail. The upper parking is limited. Nice short trail hike with a good view.

After doing this hike more than 20 times, I can finally attest that this trail/hike is the best.

I’ve done this with my friends, my family and my gf. They’ve all loved it! I’ll keep climbing Tunnel Mountain until I move away from Banff.

Very easy doable hike for all ages, very rewarding views of both sides of tunnel mountain one being of Mount Rundle and the other being Banff town, definitely worth it

The trail was very well maintained with beautiful views at the top. This trail is very steep with a lot of switch backs.

A great hike in beautiful Banff, Alberta. You can access this hike by foot by simply following the signs from downtown. In about 10 min from Banff Ave, you'll be at the lower trailhead. You can also access the lower and upper trailheads by bike or car, and there is parking.

Port-a-potties are normally there, but not currently (spring 2022) as there seems to be construction.
Trail is not stroller or wheelchair friendly because of stairs. It is, however, a great hike for ages 5+ (my 4 year old got to the top, but then fell asleep and had to be carried down).

Wonderful views of The Banff Centre, the townsite, and the Fairmont hotel.

Great hike in Banff! Steep for inexperienced hikers but well worth the view of Banff and surrounding area. If you're in town, you need to check it out.

That is an easy well maintained trail with open view spots to Banff town, Sulphur Mount, West Mount Rundle, and to the Cascade Mountains Region.

Parking is very limited.

Nice steep but easy trail to the top of tunnel mountain. It is about 2.5 kilometers to the summit. The view is amazing!

Moderate rating, which is probably over-cautious. If your fitness level is inferior, this is probably not for you nonetheless. It is a long steep hike in places. Absolutely worth every step when you're at the summit. Phone service excellent throughout, but here is forewarning: this is a tourist hotspot. Go early and on a weekday.

This hike is almost exclusively switch backs. It is a challenging hike for new hikers. The view is totally worth it however.

Great views. And the tourists there were superb. Made the afternoon fun. Next time will make it to the top.

A short, easy trail with some decent inclines, affording great views of Banff and the Bow Valley both to the west and east. Definitely recommended if you're in Banff for a few days!

If you're used to hiking +10km on straight level ground you'll learn that elevation makes a huge impact!

Gorgeous views all the way along the switchbacks. You can park partway up (about 10 spots) or hike right from town. Either way a relatively easy Rockies summit.

Well maintained trail. Modest 60-75 minute hike from the upper trail head. Great views of Banff downtown, golf course, mountains.

Parks Canada and the town of Banff have done a great job maintaining this trail for the number of visitors it sees. The redone trailhead is especially nice with the locally sourced rock stairs. My kids enjoyed it thoroughly! Thabks

Tje place is awesome. Easy hike with a beautiful view of banff town, hoodoos, Sulphur mountain and end of Rundle Mountain. A little bit hazy at this time because of the wild fire in BC

Great hike! Takes about 1.5 hr at a slow pace. There is some incline so be prepared. But totally worth it at the end.
Take breaks and take water and enjoy

Moderate trail, took about 2 hours from lower parking lot to top and back. Very popular, busy trail, lovely viewpoints along the way. Watch your step, some polished rocks, roots etc.

Did a hike here on Apr 3, with our two boys ages 8 and 12. Only ended up needing our cleats around the very top where it was a little dicier with some slippery ice, but otherwise the trail was in really good shape considering all of the refreezing temps lately. The views are awesome, and we'd definitely recommend for anyone!

I enjoyed the Tunnel Mountain Trail. It took us longer than other people online said it would but we took lots of breaks on the way up. It took us 3 hours up and down including about 20 minutes at the top for a lunch. Fantastic view in all directions. Ice cleats made it much easier!

I hike this every year we go to Banff.
At 58, with health issues, and a a
Pacemaker, I can still make it up in 43 minutes.
Totally worth it for anybody who wants to say, "they hiked up a mountain".

Nice hike with great views of town site and valley. Took us 1.5hrs at a moderate pace. The first 10 minutes is the steepest.

A great lil walk just in Banff, perfect place to walk dog, go for run or take the girl on a date. Amazing view when you get to the top as well!

Beautiful view at the top as always. Recommend spikes for your shoes in winter and early spring because it was VERY ICY. We went Sunday morning from 9am to 11: 30am, not a lot of people, which was nice. Took our two dogs, no issues.

Hiked this trail in the winter and it was tons of fun. I have been to Banff many time before but until now have not enjoyed this hike. I was in shoes and it was a little slippery but manageable.
