Excellent service, excellent food. You can tell they hold themselves at a very high standard. Sushi or ramen you get a really fresh food experience. Service is also top tier!
We been there for dinner, we ordered 3 diff ramen bowls but all the blows looks like the same, even the tantan ramen.maybe the only diff is the soup? But I searched Japan food online they shouldnot look like the same.
Worst place to come to ever! I'm sitting here right now waiting for 2hrs and my food is still not all here! It takes them every 20mins to bring one item. They have 2 tables, it's not busy, what excuse do they have? ! Ohh they were out of masago and ikura and guess what? ! They didn't tell us until 1 hr later. This is ridiculous and the worst service ever. They also came to the table with burnt unagi. DO NOT EVER COME HERE! Never coming back. ALSO, canceld the last roll that's hasn't come yet. First time here and this is their impression. No thank you. I really should've went to Shibuya, why did I want to try a new place and suffer. Ughhh
P. S. I only took one photo. Why? Because I had no patience to take a photo every 15-20mins for a dish. I was more hungry at that point. To sit there for so long that I wasn't hungry after the 1hr mark.more so just wanting to have the sushi I haven't had in a while. This place is just so jot worth it
We tried all sorts of items here, sushi, baked foods, ramen, and sashimi. Everything was excellent. They even have a Godzilla Roll, how could you not order that! Friendly staff too, in a nice clean cozy venue. We will definitely be going back for more.
I was CRAVING ramen and decided to try something new for takeout - have eaten ramen all over the place (including across Japan), and it's a favourite comfort food of mine. My order was for the Tonkotsu Ramen with extra negi (green onion), shoyu tamago (egg marinated in soy sauce), and a housemade chilli oil sauce (that I requested on the side), plus an order of Gyoza. I especially love that there was shredded wood ear mushroom already in the dish (otherwise I would've wanted to add it), yum!
Everything was delicious, well-presented, well-packaged and totally met my craving. The house made chilli oil was unique and packed with umami flavour (the name makes sense!). I will definitely be ordering again. Also, the omakase noted on their website looks fabulous (I'm a big fan of an omakase, and it's hard to find in Calgary) ; so, I'll have to try that sometime soon. I would've taken photos, but I devoured everything too quickly to do so.
This is the BEST Sushi in Calgary. It is always so fresh and the portion sizes are larger than other restaurants. We have been coming to Umami (formerly Maruju) for years. We have tried others but nothing compares the freshness and flavour of Umami. Chef Dean is a master and he is such a kind person. Try their Hamachi with some green onion and Seared Salmon Toro. YUM. Highly recommend.
We had the ramen and an assortment of appetizers. The oysters and nigiri were definitely the highlight of the meal! Will definitely come back to try more of the menu!
Food was amazing! We had the blue fin, salmon belly, cod and ramen and all were delicious. This is a must visit for anyone who enjoys good quality fish
Fantastic food and great service from the team and owners here. We enjoyed their omakasen experience tonight and it was absolutely fantastic!
We can tell the chef/owner put lots of care and attention towards creating the omakasen menu, each piece of sushi was fresh and masterfully made. We really enjoyed our night here and would definitely recommend for others to try.
We've been here before (pre-pandemic) and already loved their ramen bowls, do we are pleasantly surprised to find they started doing omakasen menus this past while and knew we had to try, and we were glad we did!
We always enjoy their sushi, sashimi and ramen. Fish is fresh and rice is seasoned perfectly, they make their own soya sauce and it is delicious. Excellent customer service and very knowledgable about sake. Highly recommend!
They're food is always solid and their service is above and beyond. As someone with allergies, I really appreciate their ability to adjust their menu for me ️
Ordered take-out and suppose to pick up at 5pm, waited more than 2 hours. Rushed home and had dinner with wife.very disappointed. Food was good though.
We waited 2+ hours for a small pick up order on December 19,2020. The owner was aware that orders were already backlogged at 5: 00 PM but made no attempt to notify customers with later pick up times. Throughout the evening, the restaurant informed customers that their orders were about an hour behind, when in reality, they were actually behind by 1.5 to 2+ hours. Although the sushi was decent, we would not come back here as customer service is clearly not their first priority.
We came here to try their omakase. I was disappointed that we were not served the traditional way at a counter but instead we sat at a table and food was brought out to us, course by course. All courses were not bad but not exceptional either. Was a lot more expensive than other omakase dinners I’ve had. The sake sommelier was very nice, she came by the table often and explained the courses when the server did not. This was also one of the longest meals I’ve had.we were here for 4 1/2 hours.
Amazing sushi and ramen. Beautiful presentation and friendly staff. I did find that food takes a while to be served but I think it's well worth the wait. Compliments to the chef!
Top notch omakase experience! Having spent the majority of my adulthood in Vancouver, it is wonderful to have the same kind of fresh sushi quality in Calgary. The owners were fantastic hosts and engaged each party to make sure they were having a good time and enjoying their food. I would definitely go back and try their regular menu as well!
I had whit my Friends on a Sunday the Chef's dinner it was amazing the flavor profile and the presentation was great the service was great to it was one of the best Japanese Dinner I had in Calgary
Very clean and welcoming spot. They serve generous portions and for affordable rates. We enjoyed the food very much and the waiters were super welcoming and informative. Recommended.
The broth here is super decadent and rich. I could literally bathe in it. I'm pretty picky about broth and since we have nothing much else to do during this pandemic but eat, I am super happy I found this place! We did take out this time and the employee was extremely considerate about handling the food. The gyozas were wonderful and the sushi was tasty. The portion size is a little small for their ramen here, but that broth makes it so you are super full by the end of it. Probably best/most authentic broth I've had in Calgary. Highly recommended, support this small local business!
On point ramen restaurant. First time I tried ramen was here, and I loved it. I tried three other restaurants since and have been let down every time. Now I only order from Umami. Super friendly service, rich delicious broth, and actual pork belly for once! By far the best ramen place I've tasted. Strongly recommend.
Vey yummy food. Owner is serious about the quality from sushi, sashimi, wine to noodles. Very good customer service. Remember to reserve their store made ice cream!
Business hours posted are wrong. I walked all the way there and the door was locked. Even the sign on their door has the wrong business hours. Super disappointed. I hate having my time wasted.
I usually pack lunch to work but whenever I have a sushi craving I'll get takeout from here. I've built a nice rapport with the owner and she told me she was gonna hire a new manager to take over. So now that a new manager has taken over, the service is horrible. I had a 30min lunch break from work and I spent that entire time waiting for my takeout. Someone came after me, got served his food first and even finished and I still haven't gotten my order. Checked with them at least 4 times and I explained that I only have 30min and they still took their own sweet time. Horrible! Manager didn't even have the decency to rush the chefs herself. All I ordered a sushi roll and tempura so I don't know what took so long. I waitressed at a sushi restaurant before and I know how long food takes to get made. This is the worst experience ever. Could have given 1 star but I'm giving two just because I knew the owner and she is incredibly nice.
If you swing by on the Superbowl night, you have the restaurant just for you. And very interesting conversations with the owner. And the food is fabulous! Thanks for that great moment!
I came here for lunch today. The service is friendly, but food comes out rather slowly. Other than that, the food is fairly good. I would recommend the Pork Chashu bun. You get two for around $7, and the are quite large. They taste very good, and include onions, pork, mayo, and tonkutsu sauce. Another dish I would recommend would be the calamari. The batter is quite light, and the calamari not too chewy. I personally do not eat ramen, (even though this is mostly a ramen joint) but I hear that it is also flavorful. Would I come back here? Maybe for the Pork buns, and for ramen if you like ramen. (Again, I don't eat ramen personally) Overall this place was good, and I will be back in the future.
Had the Miso Ramen and pork buns. Everything tasted good, but nothing jumped out at me either. It's a relatively small space, and the girl working there is friendly. I'm still on the hunt for Calgary's best Ramen. My vote thus far goes to Jinya. You can get add ons to your Ramen for about $1.00 ea.for an egg, pork etc.
I don't know if I'd go out of my way to eat here again. It's not bad food, rather I'd say average. If you live off 16th.ave.however it might be worth a try
When I went with a friend in November, the sushi was delicious and the atmosphere was modern, clean, and cozy! Our server Kelly took excellent care of us and made amazing recommendations. She's so friendly, fun, and knowledgeable. The music was great too. Would highly recommend!
Wow! I enjoyed the angel roll immensely and my husband had ramen. He said it was very tasty. For dessert we shared home made sesame ice cream which was delish! Will be back for sure
They cancelled my order because they simply wanted to close early for the day, and gave me a late notice only by email (I made an order very early). So I waited and waited for my dinner which never came.
The ramen is amazing! The service is amazing! The only reason I gave only 4 stars is because their menu is limited if you can’t have pork. Otherwise, would def recommend anyone who hasn’t had ramen before to try it here first!
For a location that was not very busy on a Sunday. Service was very slow, the hostess seemed to come back and make up for it multiple times. They then only had 1 debit machine that they were sending out for delivery so they asked us to pay for our meal earlier than we were done.
When you think about a place that serves ramen and sushi at one location, expectations are usually mediocre. The ramen in general is alright and the sushi taste like it's from a certain fast-food chain wanting to be the McDonald of sushi in Calgary. But Umami noodle bar and Maruju sushi is not like the others in this city. Tonkotsu Broth is delicious, rich and flavourful but without the mouth full of oil and MSG normally found at other large hype chain ramen bars in town. Sushi is by far a step above the others in Calgary. I might be bold enough to say it's one of the best in town. Fish is fresh, rice is warm. Each nigiri piece is carefully brushed with a coat of homemade soya seasoning, no extra soya sauce require! The servers and chef are also thoughtful enough to serve sushi before ramen so the wonderful soup base doesn't mask the delicate taste of their fresh fish. Enthusiastic staff actually care about your happiness and isn't there to just shove food on your table and collect a tip. Best overall Japanese meal I've ever had in Calgary. Down to earth and friendly staff. Wonderful food. A full five stars in my books. Near impossible to find in Calgary unless you "know someone"
Delicious ramen and soft chashu. I've tried many ramen franchises in Japan and other countries. And I would say this place is pretty good. Deep broth soup and salty soft egg. So delicious. Service was good and friendly. Definitely going back.
Decent sushi lunch sets at affordable prices, I will go back again. Did not try their ramen this time but I did a couple years ago and it was mediocre for me.
The interior design of this restaurant is quite interesting; it's modern with the perfect amount of Japanese feel. Service is awesome and staffs are very friendly. On top of that, food is delicious. Personal favorites are spicy miso ramen and the Godzilla roll. 10/10 would recommend. Bomb. Com
Let me start with the highlights. The gyoza and squid were amongst the best I've ever had, even in Japan. The takoyaki was good, but without a solid piece of octopus at the center and the bonito flake bed that is traditional. The sushi is all fancy and non-traditional. The ramen was good, noodles were perfect, but the broth was just average, and why am I buying the egg as an extra garnish? Service was fast, but there were no other customers. I want to go back and explore more of the menu. The gyoza alone is reason to.
Nice place but very disappointing experience overall. Food was only okay - but service was truly apathetic. Lots of places that want your business - go to some place that gives a damn.
As a new ramen place in Calgary. It's doing pretty well! The service was good, and the presentation of the food was superb! The ramen itself was not blow your mind out of the water good, but for the price it was filling and tasted fine. Overall, not a bad place. But I would not drive 30 minutes everyday to have it.
