It was such a cool experience making, bottling and labeling our own wine! It works to be cheaper per bottle than to buy retail. Will definitely be back!
I stopped by Wine Kitz on a whim to learn more about brewing my own beer, specifically IPAs. Rob spent time with me showing me the process and what is needed. Although this might be ideal for some, I didn't want the hassle of doing it myself. To my pleasant surprise, for a small cost, I discovered I can brew my own in his store. He showed me how to mix the ingredients (which only took about 10 min) and I left. About 6 weeks later it was all done, and I came back to the store, and he showed me how to bottle it; another 30min. This was a simple process and I didn’t have to worry about storage, buying all the gear, no mess, and very little work on my part. Good beer for a far lower cost than the liquor store!
I've been coming to Wine Kitz in Varsity for the last couple years. I've always felt incredibly welcome. The first batch I did was a Riesling because that's what I usually order when I go out. I was given a few different options and felt I made the right choice. The second batch I did was a red ale which turned out so well that my friends and family did not believe it was home brewed. Lastly I just made a pinot noir which is fantastic! Because I live in a condo I just don't have the space to have all the equipment and brew it here. Having the ability to use the Wine Kitz in Varsity as a place to store it while it ferments is the perfect solution. Then I just come in, bottle it, and away I go to enjoy my wine or beer for the next couple of months. I simply can't recommend it enough!
This is my go-to store for any winemaking kits, especially when they go on sale. (Get on the email list!) I'm not well-educated in different wines, but the staff here are always able to steer me towards wines that I have really enjoyed, and the wines I've made from their kits have been very well received by those we serve them to.
They also sell some homebrewing kits/supplies; however, I find the selection poorer and prices higher than other homebrew shops in the city. That being said, they've saved my brews multiple times when I've had to grab a last-minute pack of yeast.
2021-07-15: I was looking for a hard-to-find piece and Rob was able to order it in for me at a very competitive price, and it arrived just over a week later. Huge help!
Very very helpful. Based off how my friend and I were dressed, aswell as the fact that we look very young, I was expecting no help or service when we walked through the door, however, the individual behind the counter was very helpful even staying to talk and explain about brewing for as long as we needed until we understood certain concepts of brewing. I highly recommend going to Wine Kitz Varsity if you are new to brewing!
I stopped in for the first time looking for a fun option for corporate Christmas gifts. They were very friendly and super knowledgable. I have now decided I am going to make my own beer, bottle it and have our company logo etched on each bottle - Wine Kitz has everything to make this happen, I am excited to see the finished product!
Excellent selection of DIY brewing equipment and supplies. Wonderfully helpful and knowledgeable staff as well. Great array of beer kits to choose from.
Knew what I wanted but unable to help since that type of product for my issue was unavailable. Otherwise knew his business and most pleasant to interact with.
Lots of variety of kits and very friendly staff however, I purchased the basic wine making kit and found that I then had to purchase extra things as the kit didn't come with what I needed. With this being my first time ever making wine it would have been nice to know that I needed extra things to finish my wine. I live out of town so driving to the city to purchase 1 extra supply was quite frustrating.
Great place to purchase wine and beer making supplies and kits. The staff are extremely knowledgeable about the beer and wine making process and are always willing to offer advice.
My only complaint is that they've stopped carrying milled grains at this location to accommodate their in-store brewing program as milled grains give off a lot of dust. Because of this I've needed to start shopping elsewhere for grains. Otherwise they have all the essentials and a good selection of kits.
Whether you've been making your own beer/wine for years or are a complete beginner looking to get into brewing but not sure where to start, I'd highly recommend stopping in at Wine Kitz.
I’ve purchased ~95% of my brewing equipment here - they’ve got great prices and they’re really helpful and friendly. I’d recommend them to anyone getting into home brewing; whether you’re doing wine, beer, cider, mead, or anything else that ferments!
Extremely helpful, excellent prices, great staff. Derek is always very patient with beginners like me, but he definitely knows his stuff all the way up to the most advanced stuff.
Fantastic place. We wandered in one day and were so shocked by how amazing this store is. Staff are the absolute best - they literally chatted with us for 45 to help us determine a good pick of wine kit that we would enjoy. We are noobs to wine so we narrowed it down by talking about what wines we liked and then describing what we didnt like about others to determine my dislike od red wine mouth feel = i hate tannis. We came back later to buy some beer kits and had an equally amazing experiance. My favorite part is that they sell little kits that you add to a beer kit to completely change the outcome. I got thier Scottish kit to pair with a red ale kit to make an amazing Scottish ale. This place is 100% the only place we buy wine & beer making kits now.
Been coming here since early 1990s, with a hiatus to raise kids and make no beer and wine for 15 years. Happily new owner continues the tradition of great service, knowledgeable staff and reasonable prices. If you are starting out, they will help you get onboard. If a veteran, great expertise to exchange. Happily recommend as Calgary’s most friendly and helpful home brewing / vintner store!
