Hai Shang Restaurant 海上酒家

Thought we'd give a new Chinese restaurant a try since our regular one is under renovations. Ordered food for New Years, and let's just say that this restaurant might become our new go-to. If you're looking for some really good Chinese food in South Winnipeg, then give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

So we go to this Chinese restaurant and first thing, it's clean. I mean, we were ready for the usual grungy vibe, but nope. Anyway, we're all about those soup dumplings and they're good—maybe not mind blowing, but good enough for a round two.

We went all out and ordered a feast—deep-fried breaded shrimp, deluxe fried rice, shanghai noodles, butter chicken, mapo tofu, and deluxe egg foo yung. That egg foo yung was something else! Just the right gravy ratio, it didn't get all soggy on us.

Honestly, we overdid it with the ordering and surprise, we had enough to take home for another meal. This place is our new go-to for when the Chinese food craving hits. No doubt, we're coming back for more.

Went there for the first time. We tried soup dumplings and veg spring rolls to start.

The soup dumplings were so good and the spring rolls were pretty average.

For our entree, we had fried rice and chicken (I forgot the exact name lol) it was good.

The restaurant was very clean and washrooms were as well. Our server was very nice and professional.

Would recommend going and trying the soup dumplings.

Nice atmosphere and seating. Good service but didn’t ask how my food was during or at the till.the Wontons in my Wonton soup tasted like frozen ones warmed up, with little flavour in the meat, in basic canned consumme.
Also had Pork with mixed vegetables. Veggies were cook nicely but the pork used was sliced BBQ Pork, not likely made on in-house, it was very dry and tough, hard to eat. Pork belly would have made for a better dish.

Hands down best Chinese food I've had in WPG. And this is coming from someone from Toronto! Great food that reminds me of home. 10/10

Literally one of the best chinese restaurants in Winnipeg. The food, the people, the service damn everything is top notch at this place! I went there for dinner and man the best part of the restaurant is they use no MSG!
You guys won't regret going there! Do give it a try!

Food 1 star, service 5 stars, atmosphere 3 stars, so that’s why I put 3 stars at the end. The owner of restaurant has changed for only 1 month, so all the previous reviews don’t count. Although the new owner is very nice and kind, I need to put a just review, hope the food side could improve by time. They said would add more content in menu soon. As a Chinese, the food now I would not go again unfortunately, but if the food improves, then I will visit due to the service is very good.

I tried the chicken fried rice from this newly owned restaurant
and it was amazing! The flavors were perfectly balanced, the portion size was generous, and the staff was friendly and efficient. Highly recommend!

Ordered for pick up. Very pleasant people that’s for sure and the restaurant itself looked very nice. But it was green pea overload- like frozen green peas. Ordered sweet and sour pork- did not taste like sweet and sour pork at all and a lot of green peas in it, Sesame chicken-green peas, beef with black bean- green peas. I guess they were using it as a filler? Maybe an off night? But Unfortunately won’t be going there again because of it.

This is easily my favourite spot for Shanghai cuisine. I'm very sad that the owners are retiring on April 14 as I will dearly miss this place.

I’m once help in the kitchen. They serve you chicken which sticky already by wish the surface before cooking. Their noodles are moldy, chef ask me take out moldy parts and continue cooking. No mention about the rotten broccoli and they also pick up food from garbage which throw away by Food Inspection Agency.

I recently dined at Hai Shang Restaurant and was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and service. The moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for a fantastic meal.

We started with the famous Wong Tong Soup, and it was simply amazing. The broth was rich and flavorful, with a perfect balance of spices that left us wanting more. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the tender pieces melted in our mouths with each bite.

The beef dish was equally impressive, and it was clear that the chef takes great pride in using only the freshest ingredients. The meat was succulent and tender, and the sauce was the perfect complement to the dish.

The service was impeccable and the staff was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. They were attentive to our needs and made sure that our dining experience was nothing short of perfection.

Overall, I would highly recommend Hai Shang Restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious meal in a wonderful atmosphere. I give it a solid 5 stars, and we can't wait to go back for more.

Based on the reviews, I expected it to be better - the food is pretty average. The service was good though

Absolutely AMAZING soup dumplings! As good as those at top restaurants in TO, accented with amazing service. What a treat to have this restaurant in Winnipeg ️️️
