Johnny G's Restaurant & Bar

We’ve been coming here for about 10 years for dinner prior to productions at MTC, The Warehouse and the Concert Hall. On the last 3 occasions, all in the last 2 months, we have waited an hour or more for our food, and have watched the clock anxiously as curtain time gets closer. Food is good, however it’s not worth the anxiety. We won’t be back. Next week we’ll find another restaurant that pays attention to in house diners rather than putting all the focus on skip the dishes. Tonight we had to cancel a dinner as 3 out of 4 plates arrived 10 minutes before we had to leave, and the 4th never showed up.

Unfortunately the service was quite low and not only did we have to send back our fries due to being soggy and not well cooked but we also had the experience of mouldy feta in our Greek salad, stale croutons, and a strange funky taste in the Cesar salad. We ended up just leaving our salads completely. We did mention to one of the staff the condition of the salad and was met with not much other then a response stating they would just let them know. We paid full price for everything and we’re very disappointed in the quality of our food and service. This was once a lovely little spot but unfortunately after this experience we won’t be coming back.

Sadly, I had to ask 3 times for a glass of water as our waiter kept forgetting. We asked another waiter for water.
Music needed to be a bit louder. You could hear everyone's conversations it was so quiet.
The prices are really good.

Not happy with our experience.
1. Table and chairs were dirty
2. Ripped sugar packages on the table
3. Waitress served cream without a spoon after serving the coffee.
4. Meat was cold and was given fries we had not ordered
5. I had to ask for the ketchup after being given the fries
6. Was not given napkins
7. Waitress did not check in on us and was hard to reach.
8. I had to walk up to the bar area and wait to get their attention to pay.

I wish I hadn’t paid for our meals.

Food was great but this one Asian waitress was a bit rude. I didn’t have much for tips so I gave her a $1 tip. She never even said thank you Just said “oh that works”

My first time inside for a drink, very nice staff and extremely clean. I’ve had their exceptional chicken fingers in the past for take out.

Not sure why this place has low review score. Probably one of the cheapest bars in the country with excellent, fast, courteous service. Two drinks for $13? In this economy?

Used to love going to Johnny G's for their specials and great service. Prices have gone up which I guess is okay since the portions got bigger. Went to the McDermot location for May long and there was a sign on the door saying only the Main location was open. Went with a group of 6 and the restaurant was dead when we arrived but our waitress didn't seem happy to be at work or deal with people. Was only offered a refill once throughout the whole meal.

Everything is always super cheap and super yummy. The bathrooms are quite small but they do have everything you need. Definitely recommend coming for drinks!

Waitress said there's no fries but I see fries coming out left right and center. You think I wanted a ceaser salad when I'm smelling all these fries around and legit probably the most sold thing how you run out of FRIES.

I always heard good things about this restaurant so I wanted to try it. I got the Louisiana chicken wrap which was underwhelming. I could make a better wrap at home In fact pita pit does a better job than what I got. Which was just small pieces of chicken, lettuce, mostly lettuce and sauce. No flavor at all at least at pita pit you get bacon a lot of cheese and veggies and onions. The fries were good after I reheated them in my air fryer they must have packy them when they were super hot so the condensation made the fries super soggy. The salad was super Caesar salad was plain no bacon, no cheese.

We went in for a quiet lunch. That is exactly what we got, and it was wonderful. I had a simple French onion soup and an order of fries with gravy! There was way too many friends and packed half for home because they were too good to abandon. The service was fast and friendly. I would definitely go again.

Nice, relaxing atmosphere. Good food at a resonable price. Try the $1O. 00 steak dinner.

One thing that the meals are missing; coleslaw.

The big crunch chicken sandwich is simply delicious, and if you like fries, there are a bunch of them with the dish.

The Cheese Steak and fries are awesome! The portion is good. However, they no longer have $10.00 take out meal. The website still shows the $10.00 take out meal though.

Great pub food. Sat at the bar. Had an interesting conversation with others (local it seemed) about tourists, and famous people they had meet.

Wonderful & warm spot to duck into before attending a downtown comedy show. Reasonably priced food & drink. Booths by the windows are pleasant & comfortable. Staff are attentive and handled a homeless person (walked/burst in) with compassion & professionalism. Five Stars!

My boyfriend and I tried to go on a date night at this restaurant, we sat at the table for 25 minutes and we didn't even have a server stop to even get our drink order! We tried to wave 3 different servers down and they each just said "Just a minute" and all with an attitude. The one server was too busy with the bar tender to take our order.we ended up leaving, will NEVER go back again- WORST RESTAURANT STAFF I'VE EVER MET

My husband and I ordered 2 meals and 2 drinks for takeout; one for my husband and one for me. Our bill came out significantly higher than it should have so I reviewed the bill and noticed she had accidentally charged us for 3 meals instead of 2. I brought this to the servers attention and with a VERY RUDE attitude she stood there for 8 minutes (I timed it) while she fingered through ALL our food to take out the extra meal, after our food had already been sitting there for 15 minutes getting cold. In the end she not only took out the extra food she had punched in incorrectly but she also took away one of our drinks that was on the original order. I told her “we ordered 2 meals with 2 drinks” and she said “the other drink was punched in with the meal that was taken off the bill”. She seemed perplexed, it was far too complicated for her apparantly. I tried to ask for a manager but she alerted me “THERE WAS NO MANAGER ON DUTY”. If you have incompetent staff, you’d better at least have a manager on duty.

Brutal! Just brutal. Best thing was the cheap double high balls that we ordered right away. 20+ min later waitress never came back. Never came back. We ended up leaving the money at the bar and going somewhere else.
I would give a zero but I can't, so you get a 1.

I always used to come here, came here again after awhile.food wasn’t good, staff wasn’t friendly.i always came here cause it was cheap food, and good food.friendly faces and a good spot to be around.not no more.forsure just gonna hit vjs if i want a burger cause idk what i walked into today.

Very slow service and when questioned about our food the waitress said that the kitchen is not sure about when the food will be out

We had to wait a long time for a waitress to take our order. I tried a hamburger but bread was cold.

If I want to summarize it in one word, it would be: AWESOME! Great food, cheap prices, the servers are friendly. It is also between the few places in town that is open late, so great for a late night snack or drink.
The stake and pasta is my favorite, and it only costs $11!

Used to be the place we went to for a late night bite.now it closes at midnight on a Saturday night. So sad. Complete letdown to a great evening.

One of the Worst restaurant in the city just went there and it took half an hr before I even got talked to then an additional 45min before my food came out and when it came out it was cold while I was there I also witnessed 3 other couples walk out. Ridiculous

The service is horrible. Takes forever to get a drink. Mostly they're serving to skip or doordash. Happened everytime I went there so not going there anymore.

Found this staple in my food and I hurt my gum. Called the restaurant and the server just say “oh that is so weird because we don’t use staples in the kitchen”? I asked to have the manager call me so they are aware of the problem. But it has been over a month, there is nobody called back for follow up. We didn’t ask for any money back just wanted to draw their attention. If my kid eat this she could be in danger. Very upset and disappointed about how they handled this issue.

It has a good atmosphere, a nice place to be with your friends. Of course, they're known for their $10 special which is quite delightful. It's a good place to come back to every now and then.

As a broke university student this is my favourite place to exist. Everything is priced SO WELL for the quality. I could live off of their fettuccine alfredo, it is the best I have ever had and it’s so cheap! Their drinks as well are priced well for the quality and taste they have. This is such a perfect hang out spot and I tell everyone I know about this place whenever I get the chance.

I loved Johnny g’s but every time i’ve gone i’ve seen a drastic decrease in the quality of their drinks and the service. This was one of my favourite restaurants in town which I can say after tonight I will never visit again. Tried to place our order after waiting for 25 minutes and the server came back 15 minutes later to ask what we wanted a second time. I get that it’s busy but then write it down. She came off super bold about ID’ing us… normally servers ask for your ID but she demanded it with attitude. Forgot our waters. Brought the Caesars in a much smaller size than they’re normally served in. 5$ doubles in regular sized glasses tasted like singles. (Whatever it’s 5$.) Ordered shots and the server brought us the total opposite of what we ordered. I didn’t know how to say anything because she is intimidating, claiming she knows everything and has worked everywhere in the city for 30 years… I don’t know if they’re trying to scam their customers but truly that’s how this experience felt. Sorry

Great comfort food and atmosphere. Of course best value for their food although not always extraordinary, still never disappoints. They show love and loyalty to all of their customers at both locations. Have nothing but the best to say about them and I love going there every week with my family

Server was very pleasant. They didn't have all the beers listed on their menu or on the table top card.

Best steak sandwich ever. My friend had chicken souvlaki and loved it as well. Cool little joint with great ambiance. Our server was very helpful and proficient at her job. Great service! Definitely will come back.

The salt and pepper chicken wings are not keto friendly if anyone is wondering. Ordered thinking it would have no breading but they do have breading (or just flour?).

I am traveling from Viarail to Toronto. My trained stopped only for 20minutes (but it stayed for more than an hour though;).

And I got my pasta ready only in 10minutes. Great taste and service and great location for viarail travelers. A perfect midnight place for a train traveler to eat!

Like many other Winnipegers. After a fun night of club hopping in the exchange district, Johnny G's would typically be a go to spot to grab some comfort food to help soak up that alcohol. I'm old now, and those memories are from a life time ago.

But even to this very day. That chicken and mushroom fettuccine Alfredo always hits home. I will make it an effort to pop by whenever I crave to feel to feel Yong and worry free.

Was passing through YWG and was looking for a honey dill fix. Found johnny g's take out menu and was not disappointed. The chicken was breaded perfectly with just the right spice blend, shoe string fries were wonderful and the honey dill sauce was the perfect accent to this simplistic yet delicious chicken tender box. Good portion size for a reasonable price.

Amazing service and the steak and pasta were not only a great value, but cooked perfectly and tasted delicious! Will definitely order here again for pickup until I can dine in again. Thanks guys!

DO NOT GO LATE AT NIGHT
This place used to be okay, but tonight it was terrible. The fries were dripping in grease, the chicken was bland, and the waitress charged me $9 in gratuity on a $10 meal! This was after the waitress gave us a broken table and no menus. The bathrooms were so greasy that I was sliding as I tried to wash my hands. I have heard go things about people who went during the day but it seems as soon as the owners leave things go downhill fast

Favourite place in Winnipeg currently. Can’t beat the specials and $5 doubles. Relaxed atmosphere and very friendly staff that always make you feel welcome.

If i could give it a no star i would.we ordered a medium steak, most of the steak felt like chewing gum.we complained about it to one of the servers and she told us that’s just how the steak is and that is comes pre cut.she told us what you see is what you get and even went on and saying some bs story that she had the same problem.what a very good experience (not). Also, charged us for a sauce when we ordered fries as part of side.we never got charged for a sauce in the other location.

Ordered milkshake for 5.50$ but i got it like only halfway their cup complained about it but they said its naturally like that but I always order here and i even get an extra cup of milkshake everytime i order it.

Nice food and clean place, but I've been charged 45 dollars for 2 burgers, 1 milkshake and 1 beer. I think they messed up my bill. When I asked for the receipt to double check the items, the waitress suspiciously told me they couldn't print it and kind threw some numbers in her cell phone's calculator to justify the amount. I just gave up, but I highly recommend being careful with the bill.

Good service good food, a little pricey but mostly worthwhile. I had the friday sirloin special, the peppercorn sauce and steak were quite good- not my favourite fries but decent nonetheless.
I would definitely recommend trying the place, but unsure how often I would return.

I honestly love Johnny G’s. They’re probably my favourite place to go for a late night bite to eat when I’m craving something with my friends.

They have a deal every night of the week and typically runs from 4 pm to 12 am. My favourite deal days are the Thursday and Sunday steak and pasta deal. You honestly can’t go wrong with a steak and pasta for 10$ plus the price of a soft drink. One thing that I would say though, is that it can get very busy. This goes especially for the McDermot location.

I removed one of the stars because at times, they’ll make a mistake with the steak. For example, if you order a medium rare, occasionally it will come to you as a rare steak instead. I don’t really mind this as I’m not very picky with that sort of thing, but I’d beware if you’re the type of person that is.

Went in around 2: 30pm, only one staff and service was slow but our table and one other one were the only tables in there. The poutine was salty, one friend got the paper from the cheese inside of his burger, the fries were lukewarm and they got one of the milkshake orders wrong. Definitely not going back.

Had very good time, the Friday special is highly recommended! 5$ dbl highballs is the best deal in the city. Btw, thanks Diana for amazing service

Came to Johnny G's At 1130 pm last night for their steak and fettuccine special. Everything was normal was asked by the server if we were getting the special and we said yes most likely then she asked what we wanted to drink. I was still looking at the menu so I said water for now and she quickly said you can't get the special if you don't get a drink. I told her I was still looking into what I wanted to drink because we literally just sat down and I need a minute. Fast forward to after she brings our drinks we ordered the special with a rare and medium rare steak, added broccoli to the pasta and yes I ordered a beer. We waited not too long and our food came out nice and hot. After taking pictures we were ready to eat, everything was still steaming and tastes good so far. Both us cut into our steaks and we got medium well and medium, which yes we know when it sits longer it cooks more so we didn't mind. I only took a few bits and I found a hair in my Broccoli, first instinct was maybe it was mine but I looked closer it was tangled up in the broccoli. Normally I don't fuss and eat around it but thinking it was mixed in the whole pasta didn't go for me. I told the server and showed her she pulled on the hair and it clearly was stuck into the broccoli once she got it out and asked me what I wanted to do. I looked at her and she's like I'll replace your pasta and asked me to take my steak. Still looking and confused how will I take my steak off the plate and put it on another plate I did not have, and took everything to the back and came back with my steak on a plate. She told me it will take 10-15 minutes for new pasta. I sat there waiting and thinking why didn't they just make a whole new meal since I had not really ate anything yet and 98% of my food was still on the plate. I've worked in restaurants and we just replace everything. So my pasta comes out, everything seemed fine we ate finished eating. I didn't complain once after my first complain. When it came to the bill the server apologizes once more then as I'm paying goes ya I'm not sure where the hair came from all my chefs are bald and now they are blaming eachother for it. My boyfriend and I were in shocked she told us that even though we never said anything after the hair, we told her it's fine it happens but it seem like she was trying to pin it on us that we put it there. After that I was ready to go and not knowing if my pasta was now A new one or was spat in because she told us they were fighting in the back I don't know if I'll come back to this location let alone I paid full price for my meal. I am really not the one to complain but this was not the service I was impressed about and yes I do work in the industry and my bf used to work in a kitchen.

We had a wonderful experience here. We sat at the bar, got our drinks right away. Our server was extremely pleasant. All of our food came out quickly. We got chicken wings, and the Sunday steak special (peppercorn steak and fettuccine). It was the best fettuccine I've ever had! The steak was decent as well. Overall, absolutely wonderful. I ordered a Fatboy burger lunch special and it was delicious up until the point where I bit down hard on a staple. I told the server, she was apologetic about it. She went and talked to someone in the back and then came back and told me I would not have to pay for my meal although they were still going to charge me for the Pepsi that I had to order in order to get the lunch special. I will not be going back there anytime soon if ever.

Great food, friendly staff! The patio out back is very relaxing. Restaurant is not very big but just an awesome place to kick back and enjoys some good food and drinks.

Greasy food with a side of shell casings! If you enjoy the thrill and rush of going for drunken eats at 2am and knowing you may end up catching a bullet and leaving in a body bag, johnny g’s is the place for you!

Fries arrived cold. Waiter offered to replace the meal but them came back to tell us 3 people had touched the fries and felt they were warm enough. Again offered it replace the meal but stated! "It would be exactly the same".

Had super there for the first time. It was some if the best food I have had in years. Large portions.cheap food & drinks. Owners son was great polite good service. Had steak & rib special. Love the fries. Will be back regularly from now on. Wish we had more places like this locally owned with value for the money. So much better than those corporate chain restaurants, which are overpriced low quality food.

I like the food especially the sauce I have with it. It is close to where I work, which makes me hsppy. I can't think of any negatives.

Johnny G's is a Winnipeg staple. Located right next to another great hole in the wall at VJ's, Johnny G's features American style food. Good selection of specialty burgers, appetizers and other fare from chicken strips to steak and shrimp.

Definitely try their milkshakes. Pricing ranges from $11.99-$18.95. Regular milkshake (strawberry, vanilla, or chocolate) is $5. Specialty milkshakes (like banana, oreo cookie, banana cream pie, etc) are only $6.

Overall it's an excellent restaurant and you'll leave full guaranteed.

Absolutely horrible experience every time. Always waiting on servers while the stand behind the bar on their phone. Told her we were ready to order more than once and she told us to wait or she just walked away. Ketchup bottle was extremely moldy without us realizing it at first. We took a bite with ketchup on it and almost threw up. Asked to substitute soup instead of fries and I said the menu allows substitutions so the waitress threw the menu at me and said “where show me” with a serious attitude. Tried to pop in for a quick bite and ended up waiting forever. Waitresses are like talking to a wall. Young girl with ponytail is useless and older lady is rude. Avoid at all costs.
