The cashier let me unload all of my items then looks at me and says it is 12 items or less while she points at the sign and makes me load everything back up and move to a different cashier. It really rubbed me the wrong way. She should have said next time this is a express register. I probably had 15 items max. Do better.

They always have great prices, I bought bbq pulled pork. It was fresh, hot, and delicious. Staff are always smiling and helpful. Great place!

Do not recommend shopping here!
I was with my 3 year old. A guy got caught stealing a little sandwhich and one of the workers plain out SLAPPED him. Right in front of us. First time coming here and will not ever come back. Disgusting behaviour on the stores part.
They should be charged with assault.

The Post Office in the store is the best I've encountered. All of the Staff are friendly and competent. Their hours are very good, and I appreciate the service.

I have never been treated so bad by a grocery store employee I tried telling h as a customer what I was seeing and he was rude and started talking down to me pretty much insulting me and when the other employees thought I was right he the started to talk down to the other employees in front of other customers I do not recommend shopping at the store as it is not a professional location

Customer for over 20 years, I really like the place, some of the products are much better than the competition and some are priced almost as double from the other stores (coffee-Ice cream- some veggies etc but, the main issue that I have noticed (that is why I write this review is the new staff, younger people with an excellent customer service approach and make the visit just a pleasant and enjoyable time. Totally new approach to business! Congratulations!

This is a great alternative to the big chains that most people go to. The price can be a bit higher, but the store has that "real" grocery store feel to it like some place your granma probably shopped at.

The bakery is excellent and the deli/food counter is very popular. You can find some good deals on meats. The produce is hit or miss, but when it hits it is noticeably better than the big chains. They seems to get bins of local stuff in when it's in season, but even outside of that, I've bought regular looking tomatoes here which were so flavorful and ripe that I thought about them for days.

Post office is very convenient, but be aware the line can move so slow that a two person queue will take ~30 minutes to clear sometimes. Just bring your phone so you can kill time and don't take it out on the staff.

This has to be THE WORST store with a retail postal outlet inside. The staff behind the postal counter are extremely incompetent and condescending. There is always a problem at the postal counter, whether it’s the debit machine that’s down, the barcode scanner not working correctly or the employees terrible attitude, there is ALWAYS a problem. I tried to ship a box and the man told me the box is too small for their label and I will need to purchase a box from their shelf for a $15 item being mailed, told them forget it. I immediately went to a different retail Canada post outlet and it was NO PROBLEM to ship that exact same box. If you want good service, friendly, competent staff that know how to work a postal outlet, I highly suggest you stay far away from here. This business needs to learn how to train their employees how to treat their customers with respect. Worth the drive to go else where.

As a disabled man this store went beyond to help me out. I ordered 2 meat packs, the chicken and their variety meat pack. Not only was it there for me to pick up on time, but packaged superbly for a 2 person household. Thank you Portage Familly Foods, and know that word of mouth advertising is my motto.

Extremely dated interior and VERY expensive. Not sure why anyone would shop here. I guess location matters.

My son got hired there and and was doing training. The people training him said he was doing good and catching on. He worked with a girl that was sick one day and had to call in once. Then went back again and he started getting worse so I had to take him to get tested for Covid. He called in again cause he had to wait for his results to come in so he did call in again. Later that day he got a text saying they are no longer keeping him employed! So I called the manager and she said he wasn’t catching on, I said well his trainers said he was and she just said well it’s in the 30 day probation period so we are letting him go. So I’m my eyes it’s cause he was sick! And to send a 16 year old a text message really! Not impressed!

Look for the flyer when it comes out as some things are pricy but they have good sales some times. Staff is super friendly

The hot food section of this small neighbourhood grocery store is 2nd to none. I grab a quick dinner on the way home often, and it's always good. Nice variety and always fresh.

It's an excellent place to do all your shopping it's got everything and an pharmacy in the same building, the people who work their are helpful and friendly. Also in the lot of family foods is an domo gas, tim hortons, a laundromat, superstars trading card shop 'my favorite' geez there is quite a few things there. So whatever your looking for to make that special Sunday meal the best go to family foods.

Sarah is very friendly and has exceptional customer service! A great little grocery store in st james. Very convenient with the postal office there too! Thanks sarah for being so kind to my family and I during our quick shop on sunday!

This store has great deals, it's a good place to shop in the neighborhood. But the staff are rude and come off as Condescending people. They are disorganized, maybe it's the time that I came.

It's a nice place with helping and caring workers. Even though I they didn't have what I was looking for haha

Their food deliver is amazing! On time fresh and convenient. The deli meats, bakery and in store salads are very fresh and inexpensive. Shop Local! My new way to shop until COVID subsides.

Just convenient for post office. I haven't shopped here for some time, but it's a good store with lots of variety.

Being a local of the neighbourhood in which family foods is located, it nice to see a business locally owned, staffed and operated.

The staff is friendly and welcoming.
Its nice to see the smiles of the staff that I see regularly.

On top of being a grocery store, they also run a Canada Post office. Most of my experiences have been here and every staff member has taken the time to genuinely greet me everytime.

Groceries are as expected. Average market pricing, weekly offers and deals, fresh produce, meats and baked goods.

They also have a lot of options for those on a budget. 5 for $25 choose your own meat packs and fresh cooked meal options.

Would like to see higher quality meats with a serviced butcher shop.
Have not been disappointed with the meats that have been purchased and consumed in the past from AA Whole Prime rib roast on sale to chickens.

Was treated extremely rudely by staff. Made a phone call asking if they had a product in stock. While I was on hold while a staff member was checking for the product, another staff member (Elaine) picked up the call. I told her how I was already being helped and she bluntly said they would not be checking for the product for me. I let her know that there was already another staff member doing the check, and she insisted in a very rude tone that in fact she would be terminating the call, and they would not be helping me with that. I will not be giving this store my business. Treat your customer with respect.

Postal Office SUCKS! The young guy working behind the desk is so very "helpful" POOR customer service!

Surprisingly large store but the one thing I found a big issue was no pricing on many, many items even on the endcaps. Strange!

I love the nostalgic feeling this store gives me as my Mom and I shopped there years ago when it was Safeway. I love their fresh in house baking (black rye buns!), and prefer the meat section over larger stores. It is a smaller store so some items may be costlier. I buy my meat and bakery items here

Haven't been going here long, but its conveniently close to home. Never had an issue until this morning when a cashier offered some unsolicited advice on a house hold cleaning product with information based on a social media post. Ended up no getting it and finding out the information they gave me was incorrect. Not really upset, but wish they hadn't done this as I don't like being second guessed or not buying something one I reach the check out. I know they were trying to help, but I don't think it was their place to say anything.

Average place. I go to other places long before I would go here again. I know it is a staple for people there but w sobey just down the road why would u bother

Some deals on meats sometimes but mainly used to come in for their Bakery. They are the only bakery that still make lemon slices. Draws me into the store. Unfortunately I bought lemon slices and we all sat down to eat them after supper and they were frozen and mealy tasting! So disappointed! This is the second time this has happened and they're$2.00 each!

I normally don't mind the store but the post office made me fill out unnecessary forms. They made my trans take twice as long as usual. I'm worried my stuff wont get where it's supposed to go. 1 package cost more than usual and the rest were the same. Not sure why that happened. Also it took so long someone was waiting why couldn't the manager serve him. He was there

I dont mind going to this store if I only have a few things to pick up. I find it has less selection and higher prices.

Wonderful selection of produce, amazing in-store bakery choices and good deli too with ready-made dinner options! Some gluten-free options like bread and treats in the freezer. Very helpful staff. A one stop shop with pharmacy attached.

A really friendly grocery store that's competitive with the big guys. Really good in store bakery and a great meat department. I just wish that they would get lamb in one in a while like they used to do

We shop here maybe twice a year but we should come back more often. Great prices on fresh meat, good deli food and lots of competitive prices

No offense but the store in general, is convenient, but the deli has declined over the years. It seems to be targeted more toward the Asian community with their infused flavors, not geared toward the general neighborhood. The potatoe salad, stew, chili, and chicken salad we will never buy again. The chicken salad had cartilage in it and turned us off. The deli meat counter should be cleaned up as well, and the workers should change their gloves when serving customers.

The staff is nice and they have great sales. Everyday products that are not on sale are pricey. They do not take print @ home coupons. Also, you really need to look at dates as very often the items for sale have expired.
