Visited Brumes Au Coude, Moncton, New Brunswick, November 2023.

Finding the entrance felt like a game of hide and seek, with construction present and no clear signage. The cozy vibe of Brumes Au Coude was a nice feeling when we finally found it, stepped in, and were seated. However, with Chef Michel Savoie MIA, we had a hunch we might be in for a rollercoaster meal.

Kicking things off was the seafood ceviche, it was spot-on. The tang and zest had us nodding in approval – a good start indeed.

Next, the puff pastry beef stew. This was a win – the pastry was just how you'd hope it would be, flaky and light, with the tender stewed beef hitting the comfort food spot dead center.

Now for the mains:

The minced lamb on pasta! A culinary fine dining faux pas hidden beneath a veil of greenery as if to mask its misdemeanour. It’s like expecting a steak and getting a burger – not the upgrade you’re looking for at a place that's meant to be an upscale French bistro.

The last dish, the seared salmon, was decent, but it was resting on something that was just plain boring and forgettable. The salmon did what salmon does – it was good, but it didn't exactly save us from feeling like we had been gaslighted by the earlier dishes.

So there you have it. Wrapping it up, the beef pastry was the highlight in an otherwise blasé main course lineup. Unfortunately, we can't say Brumes Au Coude is the crème de la crème of Moncton's fine dining scene.
