Chowder House

Must visit if you are in the area. $28 for a full lobster meal with potato salad, coleslaw and a bun. We got there at 11: 50 and already cars waiting for the place to open. Fantastic views and friendly service.

A great hidden gem on a Cape Breton adventure - awesome scenery and 5 star chowder…. And gluten free chowder as well!

Great food and good prices! We had Lobster dinner and seafood platter. Both were excellent!

This is very cool location on a point near the lighthouse. Amazing views and the food was fresh and tasty.

Stopped for chowder. Ended up with the fisherman’s platter. Fish, scallops, fried clams, mussels and chips. Sat outside looking out over the ocean. Amazing seafood by the sea. Basic amenities. A step up from a food truck. Fast. Friendly staff and tasty.

Wonderful find on a trip through Neils Harbour when stopped to see the lighthouse. Picnic tables on a cliff with fantastic views all round. Although busy we didn't wait long for our food. Highly recommend the cheeseburger. Delicious.

Wow! Delicious! The chowder was so tasty, lots of fresh fish, a perfect size meal. Crabmeat sandwich was so fresh and delicious too. And the beautiful view, ocean and cliffs.

Absolutely amazing fish and chips! Hubby had Seafood Chowder. States best chowder he's eaten on this trip! Highly recommend!

Order the crab sandwich! I split one with a friend but it was so good we had to get another. The seafood chowder was also excellent. It had lots of good things in it too like lobster and scallops, not just white fish.

We were very surprised at the very good food, which was more than enough for us. The people are super friendly and sitting outside at the various tables is unique. Highly recommended, although the restaurant doesn't seem particularly inviting from the outside.

Delicious and authentic food! Beautiful view and right beside a lighthouse. Definitely worth a stop when you're on Cape Breton!

The lobster was wonderful. The people were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was totally Cape Breton. Made our Cabot Trail trip very memorable.

Chowder House was decent for lobster, though the one we got was smaller than the ones we had previously. But my burger was pretty average. The fries could have been crispier.

They open at noon and you order at the counter. There was a small line five minutes before opening.

4.5, really.great creamy seafood chowder with plenty of seafood, and the very best sweet potato fries that I've ever had, because they were fresh cut, not frozen.very friendly, efficient service.closed Wednesdays, though!

Had the lobster roll. The lobster was extremely fresh and was very reasonably priced. Food was served quickly after ordering. The fries however were very under-seasoned.

The condiments on the table were quite dirty (couldn’t shake the salt shaker to get the salt out, and the ketchup bottle had ketchup smeared here and there). No water or napkins were provided unfortunately.

Tourist trap. Namesake chowder barely has any seafood in it. Location and service is fine.

This little place is worth going out of your way for. You order at a window but there's lots of seating and just an amazing view of the ocean (check out the location on the map - wow!).

Decidedly not fancy, nothing hipster about this place. Feels authentic.

We got grilled cheese and chips, and chowder. The chowder was cheap and excellent.

Come here for the views and the non-touristy feel.

This is a really special little place. Right on the ocean, the interior is very unassuming but the service was amazing and the food was delicious and inexpensive. The ocean view from our table was the cherry on top. Definitely recommend stopping here!

This was a purely random find on our Cape Breton tour on the way to whale watching in Pleasant Bay. We were looking for great chowder and the always favourite lobster roll. Both things you must experience when visiting the Maritimes. Aside from the slightly off the beaten path location in Neils Harbour, the Chowder House offers spectacular views of the Atlantic on a coastline with plenty of character. We had the chowder with what I referred to as a biscuit like my mother used to make and the lobster roll with fries. Both were spectacular and worth the slight detour from our route. Be prepared for a short wait to order and for your food if you show up at lunchtime. You won't be disappointed. Don't be decieved by the weather worn look of most buildings in this area. That's part of the east coast charm and the reality of the area. You're not in the big city and folks do what they can to survive and are still recovering from the effects of Covid and the economy in general for the Maritimes. Support hard working local business!
