What a fantastic experience on Georges Island! Enjoy the boat ride out then explore the fort tunnels on a guided tour with Parks Canada staff. It was neat to see around inside and to hear that there are plans to open more areas for tours in the future. Definitely a summer must-do in Nova Scotia!

As someone who likes history, I enjoyed visiting this site. Having a guided tour of the fort's tunnels, learning how the Acadians were imprisoned here as part of the 18th century explusions, hearing how this island has a special place for the Mi'kmaq, and understanding the long military presence on the island made this trip worth it.

That said, Halifax has so many great places to see, I am not sure if this island is a "must see. " If you are in Halifax for a long visit, then I would recommend coming here. However, if you are short on time, you may want to consider skipping George Island and going to the Citadel or another place instead.

A unique historic site to tour. The guided tour of the tunnel system was particularly interesting.

If you come to Halifax then take a few hours to visit this site. You won’t be disappointed.

Please note you will need to arrange transportation to the island. Ferries operate approximately every 40 minutes. It is a National Park operated by Parks Canada and the Halifax Citadel. You can explore most of the island without a tour with the exception of the tunnels underground. It is a beautiful island with lots to see in terms of history and a nice place for a picnic. Toilets are available but no running water so bring your own drinks.
