A very good experience here while visiting Halifax. The food was very tasty. I suggest you order ahead of time if you want to have the Suya.

Marry is the best! And the food is delicious! If you haven't tried marrys yet, your missing out!

The girl gave me stankeye! The food was some buffet style slop piled into a container in which i paid $25 bucks for "with tip". The rice was OK but if I wanted good rice id have hit up the Chinese restaurant a block away. The beans were MEH and the meat I was given consisted of sharp bones, why did they bother giving me a fork if I have to finger food it to make sure I didnt choke to death.

The ambience was a solid MEH, no personalities, no smiles, no music, nothing welcomed me into that hole aside from my desire to try something new.

Never again, if I could ZERO star this place I would. Highly NOT recommended, their good reviews must have been purchased from Fiverr.

First time eating from there I ordered a roti it was delicious second time wasn’t good at all ask them to make it spicy they did not but the food my son and daughter order they really enjoyed it for my 1 star on service is they are not friendly they stare at u they don’t smile they just look miserable and nasty every single person in that place they move so slow and there vibes towards you just off and the place just looks dirty

Incredible food in a simple setting. Saw this restaurant while walking by and decided to give it a try. Had the goat stew. Very spicy and delicious but recommend a refreshing Red Stripe beer to cut through the heat. My friend had the oxtail. Equally delicious, not spicy. Highly recommend this Halifax treasure!

Tasty food. Plenty of variety to choose from. The combination platter feeds one person with a regular appetite.

Mary's African Cuisine is some of the most flavorful, satiating, nourishing and affordable food downtown. I have been many times, and the quality is always consistent!

This is the BEST Egusi I have had in awhile! My boyfriend had the Juicy Beef Stew with Jollof Rice and Cabbage Veg - the spice was phenomenal and even the green beans packed a bit of a punch! As mentioned, I had the Egusi and Yam Fufu - perfect spice, assorted meats and texture. We’ll definitely be back before leaving Halifax!

Chef Mary and her daughter are quite a team! We were WOWED! The Egusi stew with beef and groundnut soup with chicken were delicious. We were advised that the soup was spicy, and it was; but rather than being it too spicy, our senses were overjoyed by the flavors! Yum! If we lived in Halifax, we’d be regular customers. The space is small, so if you are planning to dine in, which we did, you may have a short wait or can share a table. You can also reserve on-line. The food is prepared to order and we waited 20 minutes which wasn’t long at all. We’d happily wait double that for Mary’s delicious food.

We returned for dinner today because the food was so mouthwateringly delicious. Once again, Mary’s food is the tastiest, most flavorful we have eaten in Nova Scotia. The Grilled Chicken with black-eyed peas and lentil rice and Chicken Yassa with spinach and pumpkin seed and Jollof rice were YUMMY. Thank you!

I just bought some food from there the staff was so rude, It is my second time i have the bad experience. The food is so good but the experience let me not to recommend or come here again.

First time trying the cuisine. I was pleased with the chicken yassa, would definitely get it again and recommend to a friend. The roti was also good. All the condensation made it soggy though.

Loved the veggie platter! All vegan. I chose curry rice as my side and fried plantains, stewed cabbage and black-eyed peas as my three veg dishes. Wish I lived in Halifax! Just so delicious. I would be coming every day!

Had the goat stew, jollof rice, eggplant stew and the passion fruit juice. Everything was insanely delicious. The portions are very generous. The spice level is perfect, the meat is tender, i've tried jollof rice for the first time and it is absolutely amazing.

My experience here was good. I went in to get some breakfast as it said all day breakfast on the outside but they were actually out and I decided to pick up something else which I'm glad I did.
I had the grilled chicken with spinach and pumpkin seeds with lentil rice and it was amazing.
Lots of beautiful faces and also menu options to keep you coming back for more.
I actually left my wallet somewhere in the store and the person at the front actually carried it to me while I was eating. I am so grateful.
Will visit again

Boyfriend loves their food. Great service. I live in Cape Breton, and they've offered to give me frozen food for the drive home. I will gladly go again.

If you like African cuisine Mary's is a must go. Some of the best I've had anywhere in the world!

Cozy, chill atmosphere for some delicious food. Had a spicy combo of jollof rice, lamb curry and eggplant. Had baklava for dessert that was freshly made! Absolutely delicious and will be back often.

This is one of the best places to eat in the HRM. Sometimes the rice can be a little dry but that’s okay, if perfection was easy then there would be no strive for improvement.

I’m for sure gonna try the goat next time

I had chicken yassa, pumpkin seed stew, and jollof rice. Very flavourful. The portion size was generous. The interiors could benefit from a renovation so I look forward to when they do that. But I'm glad ethnic cuisine is in downtown Halifax - I specifically went here to support such businesses!

I had the vegetarian platter w Lentil Rice, roster eggplant, black-eyed peas & cabbage. Words cannot describe how impressed I am! I will come back when in Halifax!

The breakfast was amazing, the porridge was so simple yet amazingly delicious. The lady who served us was really sweet. Thank you for the delicious food and your kind service.

The food was delicious! This place is a real gem, the quality of cooking you usually only find if you visit someone for supper in their home. Very spicy, but not just hot, also spiced to perfection. I am very sensitive to gluten so was happy to find a restaurant that is gluten-free, I’m only sorry I don’t live in Halifax, I would eat here every week!:)

As crazy as an All Day Breakfast sounds at a middle eastern diner, it was the best breakfast we had during our stay in Halifax. The owner is super friendly and was genuinely interested in our thoughts on his restaurant. We will be back.probably today:)

New flavours unlocked! The food here is different from the usual Maritime fare you'll find on the peninsula but it's really good, you should try it.

Delicious. Could have been the best thing I ate in Halifax. Juicy beef stew and curry chicken were just fantastic.

Staff were not kind to children, snapping, and rude tone and looks during catering events. Also had no choice in food, and was given everything on the table. Could have been dangerous for people with allergies. Not very happy.

Goat stew flavor was good but I got more bones than I did meat - not just big bones either. Basically every second forkful I had to pick small, sharp bone fragments out of my mouth. Wouldnt recommend this dish for this reason - I expected a few bones, but this was straight up a safety hazard. It took all pleasure out of eating the meal.

Got to pick two sides - one veggie based, one rice based. The spinach and pumpkin seed stew was mostly flavorless, and really didn't add anything to the meal. The Jollof rice was the only thing I had that I would really recommend - it had plenty of flavor, with a nice kick of spice.

Lady who served me was sorta unfriendly and gave me the impression that I was wasting her time by placing an order there.

In one word, phenomenal. Particularly if you love spicy food. The oxtail is sublime. The jollof rice is spiced to perfection. Ask for a side of hot sauce, you won't regret it! Extremely small eat-in space, so takeout is recommended.

This was our first time visiting Mary’s African Cuisine, and we will definitely be back! I had the Okro Stew with Fufu and my husband had the Chicken Yassa. The food was absolutely amazing! Easily the best food we’ve eaten in a restaurant! The staff was wonderful, so sweet and kind, we felt like family as soon as we walked in the door! We’ll be back soon!

Incredibly delicious food! I wished that I lived closer so that I could visit this place twice a week. Don't miss the plantains. The goat stew was absolutely phenomenal.

Delicious food and really friendly staff. I could wish that the price was a little more clear, for example the drinks in the fridge could have price labels on them. And I could wish that the portion of sides was a little more generous.

Other than that I highly recommend them.

Terrible customer service, the girl who served really did NOT want to talk when we asked questions about the menu also come on! Please, work on that face expression when dealing with people (very dismissive). Maybe get better employees who really want to answer questions? And are friendly to customers? She also put the Falk on an empty table, not on a napkin (table that looked dirty!). Food was really cold, jellof rice we were given tasted bad (like it had stayed several days/ or overnight and tasted burnt) voiced this to the girl who also answered us in a rude way (we are the only ones who’ve complained! She said) sorry would have been good to hear ‍️. But naaa

Absolutely worth visiting! Delicious, tasty jollof rice and chicken massa. The plantains were also to die for. To anyone who thinks African cuisine is bland, you must try this and see how wrong that is! 12/10, would highly recommend!

Delicious breakfast. We had the 2 egg breakfast with toast, bacon and home fries. Each cost only $8 plus taxes. Great price, friendly service. Would definitely return.

Wonderful place for some authentic African cuisine. Tried the rice bowl (veggie bowl with 3 curries) and the fried plantain (must-try). Mary also has several breakfast options, and is very friendly to talk to and made us feel at home.
Place has several vegan options too.

Incredible service. Quick, and friendly in a genuine way. And the gluten-free breakfast was incredible and so filling! Can't wait to come back to Halifax to try more dishes!
