Sushi Shige Japanese Restaurant

A "typical" family run Japanese restaurant. If you are familiar with Japanese restaurants you will feel right at home here. To my knowledge Shige is the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Halifax.

I've been coming for years now - still the best sushi I've found on the penninsula. The owners and staff are super friendly as well. It is probably worth booking a table in advance if you want to make sure you can go!

WOW. I wish I had discovered this place sooner! Incredible sushi, best I've ever had. Blows every sushi place downtown Halifax out of the water. I will be back asap.

I recommend the fresh tuna sashimi, sushi rice, eel cucumber salad, and edamame.

The food is so tasty, and the staff is very fast and friendly. One of the only places in HRM that does more traditional homestyle stuff like dengaku and akadashimiso!

I wish I could give this restaurant 10,000 stars, it's worth every one of them! Shigeru and Aya know how to deliver on fantastic sushi, every time! I have been visiting Sushi Shige for over 15 years and have not had a bad bite. It's authentic, exciting, fresh and delicious, and I do not have anything but positive things to say about this cozy and intimate restaurant. They are lovely, friendly and caring people, and I'm so floored they chose Halifax to deliver on this amazing and creative food.don't be surprised to find them on the Michelin Guide some day!

The miso soup and the makis are subtle and tasty. You can taste the quality and freshness in each bite. I find it a bit overpriced for the size but it’s worth it. I will go back again to try other dishes!

Absolutely the best sushi in Halifax. Amazing fish, the nigiri is the star.

I highly recommend going omakase and getting whatever the chef wants to make, you will be in great hands.

Feels like a low end sushi shop when I walk in but the food was amazing. I had omakaze for takeout and it was fresh and good. My kids had udon and salmon terriyaki, both were very good. They use traditional ways to make the broth and your taste the fish in the soup. The only not so good feedback was the tempura roll that came with the omakaze has too much mayo and rice.

Food was good, service was good! A bit expensive (portion sizes are small for the price). A can of Sapporo for almost $12? Me and a friend ate well but not extravagantly and our shared bill came to $140 after a 15% tip. Usually I can get in and out of a nice Sushi place for less than $60 a person.

We arrived around 1: 39pm not knowing they were closing at 2pm. Despite the short amount of time they welcomed us in. Delicious food, great service and clean place. Great spicy miso soup and great quality fish! Recommended

Dropped by for lunch and quickly became my favourite sushi restaurant. Want an adventure? Get the Omakase Sushi. Everything on the plate is perfect.

The reviews here are so wrong! This is probably one of the worst sushi I’ve ever had, I used to live in LA and even supermarket sushi tasted better.

HALIFAX DESPERATELY NEED A GOOD CHEF THAT KNOWS ABOUT SUSHI! Good sushi not garbage. If you’re gonna make sushi make it right!

I remember the OG location, I know the family from when I was little, good sushi, very friendly. I do think that from what I have seen that take out is not the best, also kinda confusing. Over all very nice looking, pretty fresh, and good.

It's all about the rice, and they nailed it here. I am visiting from the west coast and this is better than 90% of the stuff out my way. If you're navy and looking for a nice place to take one of your tinder dates, go here. Super nice atmosphere, friendly staff, good food, and hello kitty soy sauce containers. Not kidding. Hello. Kitty. Soy. Sauce.

The best sushi we've had in Halifax and at a reasonable price. Everything we got was incredible and far exceeded other sushi restaurants we'd been to. Highly recommend!

Japanese food never tasted this good in Halifax! Every time we go here the food is consistent, delicious and fresh tasting. Their rice is that perfect sticky but perfect flavor and consistency you crave for chopsticking. Staff are wonderful as well! Call ahead and make a reservation for a certain dine in experience. Love this place and, hopefully, so will you!

Great everything but the price. Must try if you want to have more authentic sushi in the east coast.

My two sons and I make this a Christmas tradition to visit Sushi Shige. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. They are masters of sushi.

I really love this place. Fresh and lovely for a take out. Dining at the restaurant is even more great. Shige put his heart and love in his food.

THE most authentic, exquisite sushi by master chef Shige. The Chirashi is fresher, better price point and most variety than Chirashi in all of North America. The chef inspired Omakase is second to none. Highly recommend this sushi experience.

Ordered the Omakase dinner for $70 and it was well worth the experience! The taste, portions and presentation of the offerings were superb! Even the fruit dessert dish at the end was delicious! Thank you for introducing me to sea eel and for such a lovely time.

The wonderful staff at Sushi Shige helped me organize a surprise meal for my family in NS, and made pickup and the ordering process as easy and friendly as could be.

The sushi got rave reviews, and was gone before they could send me another picture. Can’t wait to visit again soon!

This place is a small place near the young tower where I have my appointments. They have the best sushi I have ever eaten in my life and the way they make it is very efficient

This isn’t your average $10/all you can eat.if that’s what you want then this is the wrong place. Be prepared to pay $50 per person for a sushi and sashimi to fill you up.

We spent $250 for 5 people and we were very very full after.

I knew this was a proper non-fake non-cheap sushi restaurant when were served actual fresh non-fake ginger!

My family and I dined at Sushi Shige and had a fantastic time. It is an authentic Japanese cuisine restaurant with high quality sushi and sashimi. The dine-in experience was cozy and the staff was helpful and tended to the table regularly. It helps that the place is small and has about 4 or 5 tables only.

We tried a variety of dishes. The portions were reasonable and the fish was fresh. My family liked the teriyaki salmon and their miso and udon soups. The fresh ginger was appreciated too and is better than that pink stuff other restaurants serve. The only thing is that it was a little on the expensive side (should probably be $$$ rating). Nonetheless, it was money well spent.

Ordered both fatty and lean tuna sashimi to go. I was really impressed. It was the most tasty and fresh tuna sashimi I’ve ever had in Halifax!

Food was excellent but I did find it expensive for my taste my bill with one drink and not a lot of food was $62 service was excellent not sure for the price I would go back again

My wife and I enjoyed a beautiful Monday night dinner at Sushi Shige tonight - consisting of the most artfully presented and curated fish available anywhere in this city. The simplicity and austerity of their new location adds to the focus on the food, and attention to the spotlessly clean dining room. The service was very attentive and not overbearing in the least. Everything was prepared 'a la minute', and without delay - an advantage to there only being 5 tables available for seating. Congratulations to the family team, on their new venture! A must, for those who appreciate more than the usual dishes available at many Japanese restaurants in Halifax. We will definitely return for the Chef's Choice.:) Very reasonably priced, excellent food in an informal setting.

Just had a lovely meal at their new location on Almon street. It was my first time experiencing fatty tuna and it was incredible.

Amazing! It reminds me real Japanese Shushi. Actually, I did not expext that I could have such a authentic Sushi in Halifax.

Real Japanese chef works here. I like the modern interior and a simple sushi bar. I think they have a pretty fair price.

Update November 30th 2018 - This location has just closed down to relocate. A new location hasn't been chosen yet though.

Sushi shige is one of the only restaurants in halifax that offers real Japanese style sushi. The fish is so fresh and the ratio to rice is perfect for maki and nigiri. The sashimi dishes look wonderful and taste great. My only complaint are that the prices are a little high and the teriyaki could be improved as for the price the teriyaki isnt great.

Sad they're closing down, even if only to move to the north end. Hands down one of the best sushi places in Halifax. Shige & Aya are so welcoming it compliments the meal amazingly.

Exceptional sushi and other Japanese dishes. The prices are a bit higher than other sushi in the city, but the quality of the food more than justifies the cost. Service was excellent and the atmosphere is casual.

UPDATE: The Granville Street location is now permanently closed! The sign on the door says that they are moving, but no new location yet.

The quality, price, and fast service here cannot be beat. Fantastic sushi. I could eat here every day for the rest of my life and die a happy man.

Sushi Shige is Halifax's best, or at least near-best, sushi. Small, family-run with an experienced sushi chef behind the counter, you can count on delicious, high quality Japanese classic salads, appetizers and sushi / sashimi. You will typically find portions to be relatively small (though the chef has moments of real generosity) and the service can be a little while inexperienced (though never unfriendly and always polite). Reservations not usually required and note that Shige is not accessible to wheelchairs.

Great sushi place! And most importantly they have sea urchin! Which is prefect! Highly recommend the price is totally worth
