Sydelles Fish and Chips

We had heard good things about this place but we had never visited it. I placed our order. Two, two piece fish and chips, coleslaw. We did receive the order quickly but if you’re eating in it should at least be presented on a plate and not the paper takeout basket. Of course today’s standards plastic knives and forks. The portions of fish were a good size. The fries were ok but soaked in oil. The fish once you fought your way through the batter was ok. Again the batter was soaked in oil. I know it is all deep fried but really there are better fish & chip shops in HRM. We visited it for the first time and I doubt we will return.

I’ve tried Sydelles a few times now and have been very impressed. The highlights for me are definitely the poutine and haddock tips. Their gravy is delicious and their cheese curds are somehow the best I ever had. I’m not even a curd person but these have an old cheddar taste to them that I love. The batter on the tips was perfectly light and they were cooked as they should be. Service is friendly and super fast. No need to call ahead, your food is prepared instantly. You can tell the owner takes pride in his business and he donates a lot to local fundraisers which doesn’t go unnoticed. There’s lots more on the menu I’m looking to try, definitely will be back!

We tried Sydelles yesterday for the first time and it was amazing! It was actually our second choice, we called Katch first and were very rudely told to order online. We decided to try Sydelles instead and see if they would take our order. The difference was a complete opposite experience. The girl was polite, helpful and courteous. Order was ready quickly. Food was INCREDIBLE- we will not go anywhere else. Everyone needs to go here!

I always enjoy going to Sydelles. I was very happy to hear that they were going to reopen their doors after a fire years ago!

It's been open now a while. They are located directly across the street from the subway on cobequid road! Their fish and chips are always on point and have the perfect amount of batter! It's always the perfect crisp, and the homemade fries are a fantastic addition.

This summer brought lobster rolls and Halibut specials! Dave gives out very generous portions! I believe they are the best in the HRM. The amount of lobster and the size of the sandwich justified the $20 price tag. Next time, I'll probably remove the lettuce as it kinda takes away from the delicate taste of the lobster.

Very friendly staff, food was fresh (sea food was our selection) and the portions were just right in an age where no person should be eating much what passes for a portion today. To top it all, the food delivery was very fast even with several customers in the restaurant and only 2 staff members (I assume were the owners). I will/would visit again.

Shrimp were fantastic, chips were ok (not thick like we hoped, but skin-on was nice). Service was brilliant; cashier and cook were both friendly and charming. Looks like a great, well loved local spot

Excellent fish and chips! Classic! Recently tried the burgers and they are very good, the fries are perfect! Very friendly staff!

Been six years since my original review. This is my first time at the new location. A big improvement over the old spot. Fish and chips is still good. Newfie style (thin crispy batter - no holes) fish isn't greasy and it's so hot it melts the plastic fork. But the portions are definitely smaller and the fish was a little overcooked/dry.

But it's still my second place favorite for "fee & chee" and miles above the rest.

If you are a food lover sydelles is the place to go great food great prices they are having a special burger month all through June $10 gets you a big burger with lots of flavor and to make it more awesome they are donating part of the $10 to help those effected by the fires thank you sydelles for being so awesome see you again soon

Fries have no taste and the fish is no longer made on the spot.my fish was chewy and yellowish color indicating not fresh haddock.twice this has happened now. I will not be back

Huge pieces of fish! I had the haddock tips as well since I've never had them before. Nice thin batter, but were a little chewy, which I guess I should have expected.

It was really good fish. Super crispy. Owner was hilarious and so nice. The sweet potato fries were also fairly crisp. I feel like it's so hard to get sweet potato fries to be as crispy as regular fries and in my experience, everyone makes limp sweet potato fries. This place does a decent job.

Frings poutine was also decent, it's just a few pieces of onion rings on-top of regular fries covered in gravy and cheese. I don't know why I expected the entire plate to just be onion rings only with gravy and cheese, no fries. Either way the onion rings were fantastic.

I went in around lunch today for the clams, but they were sold out. I came back at supper time after they got some in and the appreciation and gratitude from staff for the return business was amazing. He remembered me from earlier and threw in some extra as a thank you. So not only is the food delicious, the staff and service is fantastic as well. Can't wait to go back.

Since moving to Nova Scotia in 2020, we struggled to find really great fish and chips. We stumbled upon Sydelles and are happy we did. The decor could be nicer, but it does not take away from the great people who own and run the place. The batter is the star and makes the fish sing. Great place for great fish and chips.

I definitely have to try a few more times before I give a 5 star. Only eaten here once so far but I was happy with what I got. Fries were awesome. Will 110% be back. I was surprised at how large the menu was and most stuff seemed reasonably priced to my knowledge. Staff was friendly. Would definitely eat here before any of the chain places without a doubt. This place has a lot of potential can't wait to try again!

This was my first Trip here to NS and this was the first place I went for fish and chips and this place was great the fish was nice and flacky the batter was great and the chips were just how I like it, I will have to stop back before I head home to Ontario

Service was excellent, fries were good, but the fish was not fresh, it was either frozen or old. Too bad, I was so looking forward to this meal. Other reviewer commented about being refried, that is common, it doesn’t make the fish old (it had a rubbery texture and not the translucent flakes that fresh has). It’s an easy fix, hopefully the owner sees and takes the steps to make the food worthy of the past reputation.

Quite a lovely place to stop in for a bite. The fish and chips weren’t greasy, but had a thin and crisp batter with delicious flakey fish. The fried scallops were soft and buttery inside a lovely crispy shell. They came with a lot of fries, which were a little underwhelming. Because the fish fry was so crispy I was surprised that the fries were a little greasy and heavy.

The ceasar salad was heavy on the dressing, but was still tasty. I would just ask for less dressing next time.

I loved that you could just look back and see into the kitchen, which was clean and organized. Really nothing to hide. The owners, a husband and wife duo, slinging delicious simple fried food.

Next time I’m there if the French fries are crispy I would give 5 stars.

Went for lunch on Monday there was a sign on the door that they ran out of food! Needless to say they were closed, will try again.

Was not impressed. My fish was extremely greasy and the cheese curds for the poutine were so big the gravy couldn't melt the cheese any. Spent the rest of the evening with an upset stomach.

Very good fish and chips, love the large cut fries and decent portions of fish. I am a new customer, been there twice, will be a regular!

The family pack is huge. The pieces of fish are large and there are lots of fries. We really enjoyed them. Great flavour! The portion sizes of the Cole slaw, gravy and tartar sauce were too small for the 10 pieces of fish and fries Ask about getting two of each if you can, otherwise you'll have to skimp.

Their new location is beautiful and BIG. Got a family pack fish and chips and we were NOT disappointed!

Tried for the first time tonight. Very fresh fish. Large portions. I love the thick-cut, well-done fries. Service was very quick and friendly. Will definitely be back.

Service is quick and food is good. Definately worth the drive for the dish and chips. Only gave 4 stars and not 5 as there were a couple of times we went and they were out of fish.
