Sydney Mines Heritage Museum / Cape Breton Fossil Centre

This is a hidden gem in sydney mines. We had a great tour with Jason and boy did we learn a lot of the area and all the fossils in the area. We both appreciated how much detail his gave us in the tour and will never forget the experience. Now we will be on the lookout for fossils we are aware of. The attached heritage museum was also part of the tour and we learnt so much. Can't thank the staff enough. Make this a go to destination

My parents and I were lucky enough to drive past a roadside advert for the museum and made a note to visit the next day. We are so glad we did. We were offered a tour with the curator, Jason and he was engaging, friendly, funny and needless to mention, extremely knowledgeable. His love of geology was palpable and really kept your attention. The collection was incredible, too. The other staff were two college students who were equally as enthusiastic and helpful. One took us over to the small but well curated and interesting mining museum. It was wonderful to hear from his experience, as a younger local person, of growing up in a once thriving town and to understand the generational difficulties of living in the town in its current economical slump. I hope the museums continue to receive funding to flourish as they are real gems that don’t deserve to be hidden.
