Super attentive and responsive, they clearly have the animals’ best interests at heart. Eager to help you find your (or your son’s!) new feline friend (s)!

I had originally adopted a kitten from kijiji (I know…) to keep my old girl Pepper company after she/we lost her companion. Unfortunately Smokie was a lot of cat & really wanted to dominate. This was too much for Pepper so we needed another friend to even out the energy in our home. This time I turned to Abbey Cat, who were able to provide a personality description thus allowing me to get Smokie a friend who could keep up to her. Morgan (whom we renamed Rena) has been the perfect addition to the fold. The girls keep each other busy under the watchful (& restful) eye of Pepper. Thank you so much Abbey Cat Adoptions, our home is now full of fun and love!

"Don't you think you are a little too old for kittens? "
- This organization to my Mother.
I feel bad for all cats and foster parents that have the misfortune of knowing you, Abbey Cats.
Mom now has 2 wonderful kitten companions from the Humane Society.
Check the Humane Society too folks. They too "rescue".

We recently adopted two beautiful kittens (male and female siblings) from Abbey Cats. The process was very easy, and each team member from our initial screening call, to our zoom meeting, and foster parents were lovely. Everyone at Abbey Cats loves kittens and cats, and is passionate about their work to find the right homes for their cats. It's so nice to be able to adopt a kitten through an organization who uses a foster home system, and the kittens are not kept in shelters or pet stores. They were all very accommodating and kind. Our kittens just had their first vet visit and their new doctor said they look perfect and are very healthy! Thank you Abbey Cats for the wonderful care you provide and for the opportunity to fill our home with love with our new kittens!

Abbey Cats is a wonderful organization. The volunteers and the foster mom were incredibly helpful throughout the adoption process. I have two wonderful little girls now who love their forever home

We absolutely adore our new cat Hazel. Abbey Cats did a really great job matching us together, as she has settled right into our family. It was very helpful reading the adoption profiles to submit our application. The process was extremely quick, efficient and communication was excellent. The foster family was also fantastic. They are so caring, took the time to share all kinds of information, answered our detailed questions, and she was well taken care of. We also received full medical paperwork with vaccines and the treatment and care given, incl.before she came to Abbey Cats.

We are so in love with our new babies!
We have named our little ladies Zelda & Ziggy. It didn't take these two to get very comfy & cuddly with our family; 2 little kids and a big furry dog, who they wont stop snuggling.
Abbey Cat Adoptions made it super quick and easy to adopt our new furry family members. I sent in my request and they got back to me so quickly. I filled out the paper work - called my vet, made sure to do my research and pick up all the equipment needed to make these kittens feel at home and safe. We were able to view them on a zoom call and see how they play in their foster home.

The reason I looked up Abbey Cats was because they have foster homes instead of a kennel. Just happy to know that the cats are in loving homes before they find their forever homes. Thank you Abbey Cat Adoptions for saving all these cats and making sure they go to loving homes.

I recently adopted 2 kitty's Holly and Horacio, they are sweet, beautiful playful little kitty's and we love them so much. Everyone I dealt with through Abbey Cat adoption was so nice and professional, they made the adoption process very easy and I really appreciate all they do.

We recently adopted our sweet girl Lucia, and we felt we were in trusted hands during the whole process!

We found our lovely boy from Abbey cats. We absolutely adore him and Abbey Cats made the whole process very easy and fast.
Highly recommend them.

I adopted 2 gorgeous kittens with Abbey Cats. The process and interview were very simple and straightforward. I got all the medical history for each of the kittens, and they were very flexible on the pick up date as well. Would definitely recommend adopting here.

I'm sorry it took me awhile to write this review, but our new family members often make it hard to be productive. This is our second time adopting through Abbey Cat Adoptions and I am so grateful to the foster families and volunteers who have helped us. It's true that there are a lot of questions asked during the adoption process, but that's to ensure a worthy home for these precious pets. I appreciated the tips on how to kitten proof our stairs. My vet was very pleased with the records that were provided. Korra and Bolin have definitely made themselves at home!
25 December 2022 7:50
Highly recommend adopting through Abbey Cats! The adoption process was quick and painless - you can tell the volunteers and fosters really know what they’re doing and care a lot about the cats. Our new little furbaby is the the perfect addition to our home and we love her so much. 100% would adopt through them again!

My partner and I recently adopted a cat from Abbey Cat Adoptions. I was extremely disappointed in my interactions with the staff of this organization. Firstly, upon adopting our cat, we were not provided with a full or accurate medical record for her. When we reached out to Abbey Cat Adoptions to request the full medical record, they simply told us that either we or our vet will need to reach out to the clinic ourselves to get that information. In my opinion, it's the responsibility of the agency to ensure that have complete medical records available for all cats in their care. Secondly, upon finally receiving the full medical record from the clinic, we were made aware that she was missing some shots and vaccines. I misunderstood from the agency that she was to come with all of up to date shots/vaccines. When I reached out via email to the agency for clarification, I received an extremely rude phone call from Janis telling me that they're a rescue agency and it's not their responsibility to make sure the cats have all shots/vaccines. And that they spend thousands of dollars to get their cats adoption ready and that "if I wasn't happy with my car then I can return her at any time". Fine. But an email would have sufficed. Needless to say, I felt she called me rather than emailing me so as to avoid being rude over email. I encourage everyone to rescue cats when possible, but perhaps not from this organization.

We adopted our boys Ruffles and Pringles (formerly Simba) from Abbey Cat Adoptions. The adoption process was handled well. The volunteers who called us and helped us through the process were informative and polite at each step of the way. The interview was done through Zoom and over the phone. As first time cat owners we had a lot of questions which they answered patiently. In fact the foster family was so kind they offered to let us text them if we had any questions or issues with the cats. Everything went smoothly and we had no issues transitioning the cats to our home.
However, we were a little upset that they do not do tests and inform the family who is adopting the cats about the cats' medical history. After adopting and taking them to the vet we found out that one cat was FIV positive and the other cat is negative. This is something Abbey Cat Adoptions should have informed us about as it makes a difference in how you care for the cat. For ex: we were told by the vet that we need to add lysine to his food. Also FIV is transmitted through bites and they often play fight which is worrisome. Since they are bonded I am hoping they don't bite into each other when play fighting. Abbey Cat Adoptions should have known about this because this cat was a stray who came in injured and needed medical treatment before they put him up for adoption.
12 August 2022 22:04
We are so grateful to Abbey Cat Adoptions for helping us find the newest addition to our family. Ellie Mae is the sweetest kitten and she has found her new best friend (and partner in crime!) in her big brother Giles.

This was our first time going through an adoption process and Abbey Cat Adoptions were very knowledgeable, supportive and thorough in finding the best fit for both us and our kitten.

I would recommend Abbey Cat Adoptions to anyone who is considering adopting a cat through this process.

Great care and love for adoptable cats. They go above and beyond to find the right fit and right home for the cats and kittens they have. The fosters are great and they want nothing but the best for your future family member.

Abbey Cats requested that I provide them with a review a couple of weeks ago and I'm just getting around to it now. Honestly I'm gutted about my experience with Abbey Cats. I adopted a super sweet and gentle cat, 4 years old. When speaking with Abbey Cats I mentioned that I was looking for a low-maintenance furry pal in need of some love. I was told that she had a minor heart murmur but nothing to worry about. Fast forward a month and she's having a difficult time breathing. I take her to the vets and $1000 later find out she has HCM that requires 4 different daily medications for the rest of her life. The medications come to $200 a month and she also is required to get that $1000 scan every 4-6 months.

I am truly devestated, I bonded with this sweet girl and I'm wracked with guilt as I will need to surrender her back to the shelter as I can't afford her care. I have been emailing Abbey Cats throughout this process and they are not responding and not taking calls. I feel entirely misled and would not recommend this shelter. At the time of this review I still have not heard back from them.

Sad experience with this agency and would never go back to try and use again. Now I understand why there are so many terrible reviews. Sent an application in to adopt a cat, was told that cat was no longer available and was I interested in any others. Replied yes and which one and never heard back. Decided a few days later to re-send an application for the new cat. Very quickly I had a phone interview which I felt went great (we are cat lovers and know how to take excellent care of cats!). I was told I'd hear back about a zoom interview that evening or morning and heard NOTHING. 1 day later the cat showed up as "adopted" online and nobody had the decency to even respond when I asked what is going on. I find it extremely upsetting that they would even lead you to believe that you are a good fit and then give the cat away within 24 hours. If someone else was also being screened I should be made aware. Do not tell me the next step is a zoom interview and then ghost us. Nobody has replied to my email still. Stay away from this agency. There are so many other amazing places in the GTA that take good care of their animals and adopters.

Our 15 years old cat resently passed away from old age and health complications. He left longing in our hearts to love a kitty. After month of talking about it we decided to adopt two kittens. Nothing was working out as we looked for specific age and a pair of kittens. Sometimes I’ve got no response sometimes they were adopted right away. Then I've stumbled on these pair of kittens from Abbey Cat Adoption. I filled out application form and got the phone call the same day. Later that week we had a zoom call to meet and greet. I like questions and concerns that came up making sure that kitties going to a good and safe home. It was nice, easy and affordable. Everyone was kind and pleasant to communicate with. Highly recommend. Today these two sweet babies are here with us. Welcome kitties to your furrrever home ️

I recently adopted a lovely young cat from Abbey Cat Adoptions.
Every one I spoke with was kind, professional, understanding and reassuring. They have the animals best interests at heart and go above and beyond to ensure the right animal goes to the right family. We were also impressed with the foster family who clearly loved him but were thrilled he had found a good home. Amazing place and amazing people!
11 March 2022 20:40
Just adopted Arlo and Dreamer from Abbey Cat Adoptions! It was so easy to do and I wish had done so earlier. Very clear on what steps needed to be taken along with some helpful tips from the foster home to help the pair settle in.

I reached out to Abbey Cat Adoptions just before the winter Holidays as soon as cute little Mavis caught my eye. The team was quick to respond and set up a virtual meeting with us where we learned how passionate they are and how much they care about their animals. Overall a fantastic experience - we will definitely adopt from ACA again if our sweetie needs a friend!

I have only amazing things to say about my experience with Abbey Cat Adoptions. We had decided to adopt two kittens, and when searching the website we fell in love with a number of sweet faces (the siblings of Braveheart). We put in our application and received a call that same weekend. I really appreciated how thoughtful Janis was in asking questions to determine if we would be committed and responsible cat owners. And within a week we had held the zoom with Shauna and Shelly, and met our two kitties virtually and arranged a pick up time. It is clear that the team at Abbey Cat cares deeply about making sure these furry friends end up in a great home and they offered tips and tricks to help us make the transition as easy as possible.

The result? We now have the sweetest little kittens - Rachel and Charlie -who have made our home complete. Thank you Abbey Cat Adoptions!

We had a wonderful experience adopting our two sweet kittens Josephine (Avalon) and Peanut Butter (Anya) from Abbey Cat Adoptions. The staff were very thorough, thoughtful and knowledgable about our two lovelies. I would highly recommend Abbey Cat Adoptions.

Fantastic experience adopting through Abbey Cats. The volunteers who support this agency are amazing and just want the best for the cats in their care. We brought home two siblings who adjusted to their new home so fast. We are so in love.

This agency has beautiful cats don’t get me wrong. However be careful if you foster for them and wish to adopt the cat yourself. Once I expressed my interest I was communicated with very rudely and talked down to. My opinion meant nothing in regards to their prospective foster. I was new at fostering and feel taken advantage of as they say one thing on the phone and another through email.
16 February 2022 14:36
Great organization, very detailed and strict about who can adopt. Great friendly people. Did a wonderful job of making sure I was a good fit to adopt and the kittens were healthy and happy when coming to me.
Thanks abbey cats

We had a very good experience adopting our kittens. I was contacted sameday after submitting our application, and we brought home our kittens within one week. The only downside is there is a bit of a process to go through but it is worth it, they just want to make sure the kittens are going home with a good family who will take care of them. Our zoom meeting with the foster mom was nice, we got to learn about our new pets and got to learn a lot about how to care for them, she really cared for them!

My husband and I adopted two kittens through Abbey Cats Adoptions.
The kittens were fostered for about 2 months before we adopted them.

They were both in good health and had all of their vaccinations and vet checks. They were also micro-chipped, in case they ever become lost.

We have taken them to our Vet to be examined and to get their final kitten vaccines. She found that they were both in perfect health.

Abbey Cats is a caring and giving organization. The adoption fees that they charge are very reasonable.

We paid less than $200 to adopt each kitten and this fee includes having them each spayed. That saves us from $300 - 400 per cat for the surgeries.

They are a great organization with kind, caring people, especially the foster families.
20 January 2022 11:14
DO NOT ADOPT FROM THEM. They lied and said the cat had been taken to a vet and tested … he had not. It turns out the cat I adopted had Giardia - a highly infectious and recurring parasite. My other cat likely now has the parasite. I spent $558 at the vet for medication for both cats. I had to sterilize my entire home, give my cat a bath (pretty sure he hates me now) and give the cat back as I couldn’t risk what other things he could be sick with. My toddler is sad, I’m sad, and they will not even return my emails. They said they would refund the adoption fee … not my main concern - that’s in fact the least they could do. Well they lied about that too. No refund at all. Learn from me and stay away.

I have applied for over 5 different adoption Kittens on this website for over 3 yrs; I have children that are school aged, and if I am to need a pet it should be a kitten for it to grow with my children; however I believe this is a matter of judgment in this Adoption agency, for we have never been respectfully answered or even considered. We are a loving family with time and oportunity to care for a needed pet. With the years I've seen some pets grow up and be updated on the website but not adopted. If you really don't care about the cats why bother to promote them if you are going to let them let them grow in foster homes!? Wonder if the funds go to at least these foster parents that keep them safe, while willing people needing a pet don't have not even a No! For an answer, or a email back.

My partner and I adopted two beautiful kitties from abbey cat adoptions about a week ago, and the process was very seamless! They contacted me the day after I applied and we had the kittens within about 3 days of applying. They clearly take good care of their kittens and make sure they go off to a good home. We could not be happier with this experience and with our amazing little boys!
01 January 2022 21:20
I fostered 6 kittens with Abbey Cats, since I was new to Canada and work was remote (thank you pandemic) these kittens were my only real friends. 5 of them were unvaccinated brothers of the same litter, and the 6th was a vaccinated kitten that we got from another agency (Lyra).
Two were adopted out, still unvaccinated.
The first of my remaining kittens fell sick and then died in the examination room at the vet, but I heard nothing about a necropsy, and the other kittens weren't examined or treated in case he had something contagious. Then the adopter contacted us to let us know the brothers she had adopted were sick, diagnosed with the extremely contagious and deadly panleukopenia virus (which has a standard vaccine).
She later reported that one kitten died. No one from the agency replied.
On Thanksgiving weekend, the second kitten slowly declined. No one answered my calls or texts. They did finally reply coldly to my emails, offering no medical care, instructing me to witness the kitten die right in my own home, and get him cremated myself. (I hope you're in a happier place River). I was told to "bring the body to an animal shelter for cremation". Imagine putting your best friend in a garbage bag at 2am on Thanksgiving day.
The final brother got sick, and we were granted a brief visit with the vet. I knew he needed to be in ICU, but instead he was sent home with me, where he passed away as well.
Lyra helped get me through the sadness, she started purring as soon as I woke up, she followed me around all day and generally made me feel like the world wasn't so bad. I tried getting her a booster shot since it was recommended if a young kitten got exposed to the virus, yet again, I was ghosted. No reply on phone or email. They took her away to spay her, didn't tell me that they will organize the adoption right after, and denied me a chance to say goodbye.
Please, do not help fund this agency that treats kittens as objects. Please pay your adoption fee to an organization that vaccinates and vets their animals. Please support an agency that has some humanity.

They only way you will ever get a Cat from these guys is if you are the type of person who is incapable of offending anyone on Twitter. Waste of time.

My family and I recently adopted two kittens. The services that we have had received was exceptional and memorable. ACA members were impressively responsive and represented professionalism and great ethics when screen for candidates and post-adoption care, They were super thorough in their screening processes. I truly appreciated their advocacy in caring for kittens/cats. Thank you ACA for blessing my family and I with these little bundles of joy!

I would advise whoever might consider adopting from Abbey Cats to ask for a proper screening of the cats' health. First off, they are anti-vaxxers, and when I went to adopt my two lovely sister cats, I was assured they were healthy - so naturally I assumed they had been tested, even if they hadn't been vaccinated as kittens (they were 6 months old at the time). Fast forward to three years from then, and one of my cats has become very ill - anemic FELV+, as it turns out. This is a virus that is preventable with a core vaccination. Now I will have to test her sister, and quarantine them. It's heartbreaking, and I wish I had been better prepared - known that they are special needs cats. I'm completely devastated, and Abbey Cats' non upfront approach to their health concerns infuriates me. Who hides this kind of info from people? It's extremely shady. I love my two cats unconditionally, and hope I can help them in whatever small way I can, even if it is just to make their last weeks or months more comfortable, but I can't help but feel some bitterness towards this shelter. Be upfront. Many cats with FELV or FIV live to have decent lives, when adequately cared for.
29 January 2020 13:40
I have been trying to adopt a cat for weeks and have been putting in applications for cats even before they become available for adoption (their homepage makes updates on cats that are surrendered and looking for foster parents). Each time, it sounded like the adoption is likely to work out, and each time, there was radio silence after initial discussions, background checks and further chats about home visits. I was never given the courtesy call when the cats are adopted, even though I knew I was one of the first applicants and made regular follow up inquiries. When put in touch with the foster parents, they never responded to my emails, and I had no idea what was happening for days that followed. In summary, my time and effort of staying on top of everything was a complete waste with these guys. I have another cat at home from Toronto Cat Rescue, and those guys were a joy to work with, complete contrast with Abbey Cats. I will no longer bother with these guys, who have no respect of other people's time.

I had an absolutely amazing experience with Abbey Cat Adoptions. Thanks to them I have my cat Noah and he is the sweetest, friendliest and most affectionate cat EVER!

Adopted a cat "bear", a gorgeous long haired Russian Blue many years ago. They brought him right to my house. Kind and loving people at Abbey Cat. We Named him Guinness. He passed way too soon from Cancer 4 years ago. Miss him still. Abbey Cat are a wonderful caring organization. Thank you for letting us love Guinness for the 6 years we had him.

Good experience! I got my adorable cat from abbeys. They ensure that you are a good candidate to adopt. They care about the well being of the cats. It is not about rushing to let them be adopted. I adopted my cat 3 years ago and I am very happy with the process and experience.
26 October 2019 15:17
DO NOT ADOPT! This is not a safe place to adopt from. They lie about the age of cats, where the come from and their temperament. My friend adopted a cat which she thought came from a previous home and the cat was feral and did blend well with her other cat. When she tried to go back to Abbey Cats they turned it around on her and made it seem like it was her fault and she would have to pay to return the cat. Abbey Cats will tell you anything you want to hear in order to get a cat out the door. I feel bad for any cat that is currently in their hands.
18 October 2019 7:39
If you are thinking of fostering, I hope you have a model home! Management cares more about optics versus having good homes that are suitable and have the ability to foster cats. They put posts up saying that they are in need of homes but do not actually utilize all their volunteers & homes that are available. It's a shame since it is the cats that will suffer in the end as Abbey Cat Adoptions will have to turn away from taking in those cats due to them not wanting to utilize their past available homes.
13 October 2019 16:32
I have financially contributed to Abbey Cat Adoptions for years because I know every dollar will be put to good use supporting every cat and kitten that comes into their care. My family has adopted several cats from Abbey Cats over the years, and they have all been loving creatures who bring much joy to our lives. I am always happy to support Abbey Cat Adoptions and will continue to do so as I truly believe they are one of the most caring, compassionate animal adoptions agencies out there.

HEALTH HAZARD- Cats aren't vaccinated.
I would recommend adopting with caution. They do take in feral pregnant cats and the kittens aren't vaccinated against Rabies, feline distemper etc. If any one of these feral animals is diseased it could lead to an unmanageable health situation among the hundreds of other kittens that interact with core volunteers.
Not to mention, rabies vaccination is LEGALLY REQUIRED in Ontario.
Read Yelp reviews to learn about the health problems kittens from here suffer.
28 March 2019 14:08
The stark contrast in reviews from five stars to one star is quite telling. The reviews are from either satisfied customers or jaded people who were denied the opportunity to adopt because they didn't adhere to the organizations very clear policies. This is a solely volunteer-run organization that does its best to ensure their cats are adopted out to the top 10% of pet owners. This means that 90% of those requesting to adopt are turned away. Although this may hurt someone's feelings and bruise their entitled idea that they are owed a cat, it helps me to sleep at night knowing that the foster cat that I have put my heart and soul into is somewhere with a very low chance of abuse, neglect, or anything less than the utmost care.

There is no money being made, and even the website is maintained fully on a volunteer basis. As a foster, who has previously fostered for other organizations, I am comforted with knowing that my time, energy, and money are going to help an organization that truly puts the cat first. My promise to my adopters is that I have ensured that their new pet is the best that it can be in relation to human interaction and despite the rugged past they may have been rescued from.

To those who believe that they somehow deserve to adopt a cat, please consider that we are NOT a rescue agency that gets government funding to process as many animals as possible through their locations. We are an adoption agency that has no government funding, or even a location, whose soul purpose is to fit our animals with the human that can give them the best opportunity at happiness. If you can't understand the difference, then we are not the organization for you, whether that makes us pretentious in your view or not.
10 February 2019 21:41
We have taken in quite a few stray and abandoned cats over the years, and Abbey Cats has come to our rescue a number of times. They are very conscientious and meticulous about their foster and forever homes and the quality of care for the animals. We are always delighted when a cat goes to Abbey Cats!
23 November 2018 1:03
The phone interview for the adoption process was cold and rushed. I had applied for a kitten to give my older cat some cuddly companionship. I was told a kitten would get bored with my older cat. Huh? So I'm flat out denied the chance to adopt a kitten at all? That ended the interview and left me feeling quite sad and disappointed.

I would highly recommend to consider, finding your next cat/kitten, through Abbey Cat Adoptions. Their site is easy to follow, the application simple. I received a call from a very pleasant adoption councilor. She ensured that I would be a good pet owner. She connected me with a foster mother, to meet 2 kittens. There care and concern for these animals, and for a good match, was amazing. They had lots of cats/ kittens to choose from. Thank you Abbey Cat Adoptions for the service you provide. My family and I are so grateful to Abbey Cats. My Uncle passed away in May 2016 and then his son in December 2016 which left the animals without care and a home. They had 5 cats and 2 dogs that no one in our family could take in. Within weeks they found homes for everyone! Including the dogs and they were able to stay together. They also discovered that one young cat had a growth that needed to be removed. It was expensive and I felt bad that I couldn't do more. They paid for that cats surgery and care and then found him a home, they told me that's what they do. I don't know what we would have done without them. I love Abbey Cats!
