McCowan location has really has gone downhill. Samosas are now mostly dough with very little filling and most of the hot food isn't turning since you can tell that it's been sitting there for a while. Disappointing as this location used to be quite good. Made to order like Dosa is still ok but inconsistent.
The food is not bad, but it depends on the item you order. Some of the items are good.price is very affordable. I think one of the inexpensive restaurant in the area.good for the money.
This place is absolutely amazing. It's basically a giant storefront with only food. No seating available as they are a take-out place. They specialize in southern Indian food, so lots of seafood curries for an amazingly affordable price. Their must-trys are the mutton Biryani, and crab masala. The hidden gem though is their breakfast special! You get a lentil soup, a ginger and coconut chutney, with three types of bread, with a coffee and it all costs to $6!
Food is always stale, idlis have weird smell, chutney used to be usually stale but has been ok lately……bought 2 chicken biryanis recently on a Friday evening and both of them were just not stale but spoilt……I wish I knew a way to report this to a food inspecting agency…we work hard to earn money and buy something good but these people have so low moral values and are unethical to sell spoilt food to customers……just pathetic!
Quality has gone down so much but the prices went up. They served me spoiled food and hard mutton role. What the hell? So gross. If the owner is reading this, I have one question. Would you feed your family spoiled food? I drove 40 minutes just to come home to bad food. I am so mad. If I spend $50 at a take out place, i expect it to not go spoiled by the time I get home. My whole house smells SOUR. Sigh
Let me start by saying the customer service is excellent. I purchased the banana leaf rice and curry. One was enough to feed three people and still have leftovers. It was absolutely delicious and spicyyyyy. So good. The chicken 65 I got on the side was just perfect.
This place is amazing. Called to place an order over the phone but they didn't make it till I reached which was the only disappointment but food tastes great!
After being customers for over 10 years, I have to say, we will stop wasting our time and money. The quality and service has deteriorated over time beyond tolerable. Last few experiences have been less than decent and yesterday was the last straw. We ordered mutton biryani and got a container full of rise. 2 small pieces of mutton out of which one had no meat. I even asked the girl who was packing my biryani if she put any mutton and she said yes. So based on this and the past few experiences, we won't be coming back. Thanks
First time here. I got the Chicken Roti wrap. Its was very good, fresh with just enough spice & price was right! Had to wait 5min for fresh order, fine. Service was fast but could've been friendlier. Want to try Butter Chicken next time.
One of my many favorite places in town. Best spicy food ever, but recently it appears the flavors changed, not as yummy as before. It appears they changed chef.
There is an amazing selection of foods, all with great flavor. My kids can't handle spice so I ask for mild and they make it perfect for them. Really appreciated!
The reason I'm giving this place two stars because It's always a hit or miss to get good samosas. But so far, most of the time when I get them, they are over fried. Most of the time the dough/crust is super hard where I cant even bit it.
Found a big chunk of raw spoiled meat in my chicken briyani. It had a disgusting odor. Now my family is sick and throwing up. You better be happy that I didn't sue you for this.
Fantastically delicious food, great service. Everytime we buy from here we are super excited and ask why we don't do it more often. BABU is definitely a rare treat for our family, has never dissapointed.
Great Indian/Sri Lankan take-out restaurant. Food is inexpensive and service is fast. Really great idea for potlucks or quick bites. Personally, a big fan of the samosas and the lunch special. They even offer a breakfast for a very reasonable price and is very filling.
Currently, they're also offering a 25th anniversary special and I'd highly recommend the lumprais as the banana leaf truly helps to infuse another layer of flavour to the food (plus, it looks beautiful too as they're putting it together and when you unwrap it).
It was 5-star before pandemic, and I was there twice a week. Today 28 Jun 2021, I had my first visit after pandemic, it only worth 2 stars. Line up signs not clear, slow, staff not flexible, portion reduced, price gone up a lot. My favourite papadam was soft like napkin, not crisp at all. Signature samosa was a little overcook (too brown). Very sad that it couldn't keep its quality.
We’ve been getting our butter chicken here for a few years now. Today was another day for it and I must say we really enjoyed it. We ate the lot. Make your own basmati rice and pick up some butter chicken from here. Highly recommend it.
I had mutton dosa. It was out standing. Generous, filling, and chutney (most other places skimp on this). Dosas very thin and lovely flavour. Great service. Dietary needs met. Clean, hot table food shields, very fresh. Very good value.
Was disappointed with my visit as my understanding was that this was the flagship of this chain. No issues with service per se as staff were fine. It was the prices or 'deals' that I felt were off. Having visited the Babu off of Sheppard (near McCowan) I thought the prices here were substantially higher and I am not sure why. There are usually combo deals that I am able to get at the Sheppard location that I was not able to get here. Short order items were also more expensive. Lastly, (I suppose this is picky) the short order (roti wraps, potato balls) and (eggplant dish) items didn't taste the same (ie completely different flavour) from what I have come to expect from Babu (which is usually excellent). The place was spotless and people were respectful of COVID protocols - I just wish the food and option were better.
Our go-to for samosas, literally the best in this part of Markham. We've had mixed experiences with their entree items, I guess because they are cooked in large batches it's possible to have a mix of temperatures through the food. We've been coming here for years and it will always be the best place to pick up a quick bag of samosas to enjoy.
I’ve been here several times and very happy with the cleanliness and Covid protocols being followed. The butter chicken is very tasty and comes with a a lot of chicken. The lamb biryani is very well spiced and strong so be prepared. Come once and you’ll probably be back.
This place is when I am too busy and have to pick up something on my way from Freshco. Few items I would buy here is idiappam, chicken curry, vadai, samosas and puttu. Others, I would think twice since their taste is not standard and you may buy something on a wrong day. Watch for the color, texture and if the person doesn't mind ask for a sample!
Great place for cheap eats. Come here all the time for short eats and Kothu Roti. Taking one star off because one time I ordered the veggie Kothu and there were some pieces of meat inside. I'm sure it was an honest mix up but they have been good nonetheless.
We ordered fresh naan bread and it was hot and delicious. Friendly staff. Naan price is two dollars each we recommend it when you are around they also have spicy hot chips
Extremely affordable Sri Lanken food. I tend to stick to the butter chicken and samosa’s because I can’t handle spices very well. Butter chicken wasn’t flavoured enough, but it’s alright. Samos’s are extremely affordable at approximately $5 for a dozen. I especially love their mutton flavour. Tend to find their food on the oilier side such as the cabbage, but I’ll probably return for their samosas
Babu is my favorite take out restaurant in the GTA. Beware the food is spicy so make sure to tell the server to recommend you a meal that's not too dish.
One of the best value places in Markham! Food is always fresh and delicious, and getting one meal for $6 is really like getting two meals because it's so much food!
Delicious, fresh, abundant, cheap, extremely clean at Markham location and friendly staff. For 5.50-6.00 bucks they will fill a styrofoam container with choice rice, 1 meat/sauce and 3 scoops of any vegetables. 2 people could actually eat 1 container if you don't want to overstuff yourself. 5 stars all the way!
Came in to pick up a catering order, short eats were delicious (mutton rolls, samosas, and fish cutlets), jalebi was a somewhat stale but the short eats were great!
I have been coming here for years. About two years back when I ordered food it tasted like it was moldy.two years past and I thought why not I enjoyed their food before maybe it was just a little mistake, things happen. I started going back and the second time I ordered food after not going for so long the rice tasted bad, like the first bad experience i had, my kids and I all got sick. All day we were throwing up. I will never ever ever everrrrrrrrr come back here. And I will encourage my friends and family not too either. I also have a friend who says her mom saw a cockroach crawl on the counters. Super disgusting.
I am reluctant to comment on how affordable their food is in case they get wise and up their prices. The bag of samosas is a regular treat at our office.
Cheap good food, terrible service. Front counter staff doesn’t care how long you’ve been waiting in line. They would rather serve customers they are familiar with before you, regardless of if you are next in line.
Fast, courteous, enormous portions, and absolutely delicious - we got 2 dinner specials, 2 naans, and 1 lb of desserts for $29 incl tax. This place is a real winner!
Delicious, affordable and served in big portions. Been a customer for years and I always order their biryani rice with beef curry, tandoori chicken, and samosas.
I bought breakfast for 9 people here for less than 30 bucks what a deal these guys have the spicy buns mutton the fried savory snacks and good old milk tea place rocks.definitely a place to go delicious home cooked food they have.
New smaller store than before, but was clean and nicely laid out. Seems to be some of the original cooks but was too early in the morning to try anything significant. Samosas were crisp and tasty but unfortunately there was no sauce available. Will definitely give them another try.
Went for lunch with a SriLankan co-worker while working for D&D Party Rentals, unbelievable exotic taste I will never forget, I felt like I'm in Colombo Sri Lanka for a minute.obviously I'm coming back.thanks to the owner for having such a great tasting menu.
Fish patties which I bought was spoilt, some of their products don't really taste or look like how they are authentically made.for example samosa needs to be deep fried not baked- I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants to taste south Indian or SriLankan food.
Looking for a fast quick Tamil food you can't to wrong with Babu. Restraunt is always looking fresh and clean. Options are endless. My go to when I'm in Markham.
Very delicious cheap eats! I'm so glad I decided to try this place out for lunch. The lunch special is only $5.95 and you get your choice of rice, 1 meat and 3 vegetable sides! It's a very clean location and theres tons of parking! This is a super bonus! I will be coming back here again! I also the tea masala.
