A beautiful new-to-me walking/hiking trail that is considered easy level and would be great for many to enjoy! And today was a perfect treat of a day with the temperature high teens and a cloudless sunny sky - a brilliant fall day for a walk in nature!

It was nice to hike here, we choose this as an alternative to the zoo road where the pilot for paid parking was taking place. The north half of the monarch trail was really accessible, the southern half was through forest with roots etc. The only suggestion is to have more signage and wayfinding, we got turned around a few times since there were no maps during the hike to help with orientation in places where there were multiple options for direction.

In the mornings, There's an old Asian man who sings his heart out in his native language and plays the guitar while he does it. It was the best part of the whole experience. He even danced a little bit.

Lovely 1hr walk, very easy and partly paved. You get to walk in the forest and also see the open views. Party shaded, and not much bugs around on the way I visited (Early June). Recommended for everyone.

Decent short hike if you're in the area, definitely wouldn't recommend driving here specifically for the hike as it is quite short.

We love going to Bob Hunter Memorial Park. The trails are great and well maintained. They have a paved bike path and the fall colours are coming out right now and are sooo pretty.

Nice place to go for a hike! The trails that are temporarily closed are very muddy, so don't try Lots of helpful signage and plenty of parking in early April on a Friday afternoon

Great winter hiking trail. Well maintained. The trails has River, bridge, forest and flat road. Nice and sunny in winter. Take us around 45 to 60 mins for a loop. A little slippery in the forest, maybe need a hiking shoe. Some dog walkers in the trail.

Perfect Place for a Perfect Hike.

Bob Hunter Memorial Park is located in the Southeast corner of Markham. The Park itself is a National Park that has many kilometres of trails for all levels of hiking. There is ample parking and always people coming and going from all the parking areas, be patient and a parking spot will turn up sooner or later. Visit the website for alternate parking on Reesor Road. At the Trailhead, there is an education centre that may or may not be open due to COVID-19 restrictions, and a picnic area with porto-potties.

The great draw to the park is the trail system itself as it winds through many areas of the park. On the trails, you will see vast green meadows, a thickly wooded area, the Rouge River, bridges and many areas to sit down. Be warned though there is a Tick Advisory, so dress appropriately, and of course on a warm humid summer day, when you in deeper into the wooded area you will find many insects including mosquitoes, so bring your bug spray.

This was not my first visit to this park, but this time I decided to take pictures, so I could share them with the Yelp community. My kids were excited as this is a park that is open to all, kids, adults, families, couples and just anyone who enjoys the outdoors. The trails are well kept but on this visit, a few of them were blocked off mostly due to tree falls or erosion and flood damage from storms. Please take the time to visit this park, bring your family and your friends, and you could spend the whole day there if you like. There are maps at the Main Parking lot which are fairly easy to follow. We had a blast and I'm sure you will too!

This trail is great. Took us about 45 min to complete. It's not 100% stroller friendly but we made it work.
It's hidden away from traffic and was well maintained for the most part.

A large parking lot with garbage cans and washrooms. Trails are well marked and well maintained. The east side of loop is more scenic than the west side. Liked the forest, the hiking was a very therapeutic.

Beware of TICKS!
Had a great day hiking with my dog! This was our first time to any of the rouge trails. The trails are well maintained and the routes have something for everyone from meadows to forests to lots of access to the river for dogs to cool off. The only thing I have to say is take the posted signs warning of Ticks seriously!
After coming out of the trail and back to the car, I found 7 ticks crawling on my dog! Checked myself, and found 2 on my pants!
My fault! I let my dog have too much fun on too long of a leash! Next time I visit, I will make sure to use a shorter dog leash to limit access into vegitation on the sides of trails.

Great Loop and trail with varying environments. Great for a nice work out as well. It takes about 35-45 mins at a brisk pace.

It's nice, parking is available but the directions given on the map at the front are not the best. We ended up walking off the trail so many times. I wish they color code or add some markers so that people don't get lost in the trails. Overall nice place.

Not good for biking. All gravel area. Would a big struggle to bike in there. Good for long jogs or walks with your partner.
Good part, not many people visit as it is little far from main city

I remember watching Bob Hunter on Toronto's Citytv, both he and the station were pioneers. It's fitting that we can walk trails in Bob Hunter Memorial Park to appreciate his environmental passion.

I checked it out for the first time in late October 2021 by walking the southernmost portion, Tanglewood. The eastern side runs along the Rouge River, an amazing urban watershed, and the trails had the distinct scent of cedars, you can almost forget you are part of the city. The western side has more hardwood leaves on the trail and the views remind you that the city continues to encroach upon the watershed.

The trail would likely get muddy after rain, so dress accordingly. Note that I found that the cross portion of the trails is not open so you will be taking a big loop with Reesor Way. If you read the information plaques you find out about First Nations history and how far Peter Reesor walked and why. They are found along the trail and are separate from the map board. Let's respect the Rouge and enjoy our walks!

Pebbled paths with some slippery when wet muddy paths. Beautiful green scenery for healthy eyes. If visiting during the rainy season.carry a mosquito repellant. Wear good walking shoes as the terrain varies. Lovely stream flowing through the park. Gives the feeling of calm and serenity. Great for quick walks with the fam.

I could see the potential of this trail.when you go into the forest, it is nice. However, some parts of the trail are now closed due to construction and As a result there is an unavoidable stretch that is fairly boring.

My family enjoyed the wide paved portion of the Monarch Trail last weekend. We saw lots of Monarch butterflies, a scenic bridge and creek, beautiful woodland areas with really tall trees, and the open corn fields. We will definitely come back to explore the rest of this trail and the other trails that we didn't try yet.

This national park was such a hidden gem in the middle of the City of Markham. Parking was easy. This park was well maintained and the Tanglewood Trail was easy to follow & quite straightforward. There were some up and downhills in the woods but not too difficult or danger. Some trails were closed for maintenance at the moment. They had signs to keep you out of those areas. The scenery was amazing. There were many nice views for taking great photos. Since it was such a good place for hiking and biking, I guess it can get busy on weekends. I suggest it’s better to go there on a weekday to enjoy the peace and nature with less people.

My first visit very short one.
There is something here that other parks are lacking. Don't know what it is yet but I know for sure that I'll be coming back in very near future to find out.
23 July 2021 17:30
Decent trail with some shaded areas and a rather long stretch at the end without shade (pretty brutal on a sunny hot day). It’s about a 3km hike with bridges and a creek (?). NOT ideal for strollers - roads are not paved. Also has some closures to certain paths.
17 July 2021 10:45
What a beautiful place! Some of it is paved and some is natural hiking. Beautiful woods and wetlands!
10 July 2021 1:46
Nice trail for walking or biking. You can choose if you want a long which is almost 3hours or a short one for 1 1/2 hour. Wonderful nature trail

3.5 stars. We came to this park on Mother's day for a nice stroll. We chose the longer route (yellow butterfly route). Not long after we started, the it was getting windy and drizzle for a couple of minutes. The first half of the trail wasn't too interesting and not much tree for shade if it was a hot sunny day. Second half was much more interesting with a river, bridge and trees. The yellow trail requires to cross the Reesor Rd and when you reach 14th with a small parking lot, you have to turn back. We followed another groups in front us and walked east on 14th but realized it was the wrong way. There is another way to loop back but it is an unpaved route (right turn before the 14th parking lot). I would recommend a shorter trail for the smaller kids. I enjoyed the walk but it was a little too much for wife and kids. It took us 57mins for 4.8km walk.

Don't get me wrong. Any outdoor activity is nice and any park is nice. However in this case why the 4 stars you ask? Although 2 of the trails were closed we really wanted to do the Monarch which was open. But we had a hard time finding it. (Not much direction in where the oaths are per say) We ended up doing another one first in trying to find the Monarch. Once we found it, (which you have to cross the main road- unlikely for a natural path) we only did part way as it was very open and hot. We were too tired. We'll go back and do the Monarch and give it a second chance. Now that we know where it is.

Mixed trails, some wooded, some more open. Nice creek with bridges. Different lengths of trails to pick from. Trails are well kept and marked.
22 May 2021 20:31
Our visit was during the spring, a easy stroll through the park for all kinds of families. Many routes to chose from ranging from an hour walk to 3 hours. There are also many scenic moments that make it look different from each part of the trail (Bridges, open fields, small forest, a well, foundation of an old home). The map on location can be a challenge to depict for many as it may be confusing (north facing not at the top of the map). Plan ahead and look at other alternative maps online. The overall, this is a great park to take all ages on a walk.

Very nice trail, and accessible at that. It will be spectacular once it's completely grown in. Lots of birds of prey in the area, great for bird watching.

A lovely walk in a hidden gem of a park. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Parking lot is steps from the trails.
04 December 2019 16:44
Not many vehicles besides the government ones. Could be a solid "getting to know someone" spot eskeeeeit
12 November 2019 19:10
The trails are well kept with great scenery. Easy and clear trails which are perfect for anyone of any experience.
28 October 2019 15:34
Love the trails, especially at sunset. Lots of wildlife around. But be careful to stay on the path as there are tics in the area.
26 October 2019 20:55
Nice place for a walk. Location is not well marked. Nice treed and grass trails but you are minutes from major housing developments.
22 October 2019 3:08
A place to get away from it all. Put some nice soft music in your ears and walk or bike through flower fields and forests. Plenty of bees, butterflies and dragon flies, a feast for your eyes and mind!
15 August 2019 23:10
The place is peaceful. Good small trek and a small canal. A small park for kids. Just need proper clothing in summers because of mosquitoes. Free parking place and public washroom available.
06 August 2019 20:48
Great for hike and good for a short run. Not great in terms of signage and can easily get lost in he area. However even the hiking paths don't look like they are well maintained.
25 June 2019 0:27
Plenty of trails with different levels of difficulty to walk your dog. Remember to check your pets and yourself after for ticks as there was a sign warning about black legged ticks in the area. Will come again and check the other trails!
21 June 2019 15:18
GTA location is super close and it's perfect condition for a day trip to explore the nature close by
11 June 2019 12:44
Great place for a hike along the rouge river. Parts of the trails have mature vegetation but other parts are mostly plain farmland so make sure to pick the right trail.
07 June 2019 7:47
Excellent spot for a hike as well as bike lane and lots of different up and down type path as well as some water to get your feet wet
31 May 2019 7:33
Nice part of the Rouge National Park. Early spring hike with icy and very muddy spots. Will definitely be back to see the butterflies and greenery later this year.
