California Sandwiches

My last few visits have confirmed my opinion that this location does not produce the same food as the other locations… slowly declining

Ordered the veal, mushroom and cheese sandwich for takeout. Sandwich was huge and veal was cooked nicely. The salami was also a pleasant surprise.

Great food called ahead placed my order it was ready on time. Very fresh ordered veal sandwhich

First time trying the famous California sandwiches. I ordered the mini eggplant with hot peppers and onions, and also their rice balls which is a new item on the menu. First, it was a good sandwich. Eggplant was crispy, could do with a little more sauce tho. There's also heat to the peppers which adds to the flavors. The sandwich has a good crunch when I bite into it. It also wasn't messy to eat which was a huge bonus as I personally hate messy food, sandwiches and burgers. For a mini size, it is actually a pretty decent size sandwich. I could only eat half. The rice balls were ok. A spin to the meat balls but rice balls with a cheesy center. It's a good snack if you are looking for a vegetarian and non sandwich option. All in all I was satisfied and happy with my experience.

Have not been to this store in quite some time. Sandwiches were what we have come to expect from this chain fantastic. Only issue we had was the speed that the food was coming out. Not many customers in the store and it took quite a while to get the food out.
Nothing like the assembly line efficiency of the Queensway store. Still worth the wait and the price.

Cannot beat A Cali Sandwich when you've got a hunger for something satisfying and tasty

Usually this location is good, but today was a disappointment. They forgot the sauce on my sandwich. How bland. Do better California Sandwiches.

To die for veal sandwiches. Adding toppings can get a little out of control. If you're looking to indulge go for the added eggplant slice with cheese, onions and hot peppers.

Big, crispy veal sandwiches. Delicious. There are some other locations nearby but this one is my favourite

You wouldn't know it from this review, but I love California Sandwiches.

But.this location in particular has always had its problems. From sometimes cheaping out on the amount of meat, to my last visit where instead of pouring sauce, the sour pussed young girl poured sauce covered water over the veal. I only ate 60% of the bun. My son and I sat outside on the truck tail gate and ate and I was hungry so I just ate the meat and whatever of the bun I could salvage.

After I ate, I thought I would go back into the restaurant and let the server know that this was the worst sandwich that I ever ate at a CS. She looked at me for about 1 second with a straight miserable face and said "sorry about that", and continued making a sandwich. Didn't ask why, or if she could do anything to help. Nothing, just a miserable face.

If you want the real experience, the store on Shephard a couple of miles West of the Allen Rd is good. But better yet the CS restaurant on the Queensway AT 427 is and is always great.

Honestly my advice I wouldnt eat at this location, I'll never go back. It's worth the drive to a better restaurant where they have consistency and appreciation,

Have tried this place on Winston Churchill a couple of times and it's the same result. The quality of the food, the atmosphere and the service doesn't match with the Queensway location.firstly the sandwiches are very dry, you ask for extra sauce you are charged, secondly the staff is unfriendly and distant, they make you feel like they are doing you a favour by eating there. Will be avoiding this location in the future.

These guys have really cut back the portion sizes. My veal sandwich had two slices of veal in comparison to the 4-5 slices you used to get here. At $15 a sandwich, It should not be as thin as it is. I don't see them staying in business much longer if this is the cut-back strategy.

Basic sandwiches done well but if you want more that a protein and some sauce on your sandwich be prepared to spend $$$ as every topping is add on price. Good to try. Has both meat and vegetarian options.

Very disappointed. I called in my order. It’s a Tuesday night and not at all busy. Sandwich was overcooked and dry and they charged me for olives and I didn’t receive them. Called when I got home. Place is supposed to be open until 9 and no answered the phone. Terrible service

Disappointed with my last visit. Veal was dry and very chewy, even with sauce! Had a hard time just trying to bite through the sandwich and everything came apart in my hands.

The quality has dropped to 1 star. The costs are up again. The sizes are smaller less quantity. Lower quality. Higher costs. NO VALUE. NO TASTE. NOT A GOOD PLACE TO EAT

Always amazing. Appreciate them always giving hot peppers on the side. If you haven't had their fries, you need to try them. Its definitely expensive though.

Sandwiches are always delicious although a bit over priced not the best veal sandwiches for that price. But for that price, a little effort could be put into wiping down the tables. Had to wipe down my own table and could see half of them had leftover evidence of previous diners. Not much to ask when you have 6 employees there and the place was empty. The were not busy at all!

Great veal sandwiches. But they keep running out of mini buns. Second time in 2 weeks this has happened. First time they just put less on a regular bun. This time they didn’t give us that option…hmmm.

Those losers are not answering the phone after 8 pm apparently the owner told them not to unbelievable almost close the door in front my face at 8: 40 and then of course the smallest sandwich, the worst location of them all 0 stars

Can't beat the value for the price And it's freshly cooked real real real not laying on a steam table laying in tomato sauce

California's makes the best veal sandwiches in the GTA and this location in the past when I've gone has not lived up to some of the other locations but today was fantastic I will give them the benefit of the doubt because it had been so long since I've been there hopefully this is their Norm!

Great Food, large portions. Prices are a bit high but not unreasonable. Staff was very friendly and gave us a generous amount of napkins. Always appreciated considering how messy the food can be.

There are only two reasons to buy a sandwich at California sandwiches. One is for the taste and two for the size. What a disappointment at the Winston Churchill location! I will continue buying at other locations but I will never go back to the one at Winston Churchill. They have the smallest sandwiches and terrible customer service since they refused to re-make the tiny sandwiches they gave us.

I love these sandwiches. I could eat them every day. Just make sure to prepare to get messy. The staff is nice, but they could do a little bit more to make you feel more than just a number. Maybe that’s just a symptom of them always being busy because the sandwiches are so darn good.

Avoid this place the old lady behind the counter thinks she’s doing you a favour selling you a sandwich and it old bread she gives you

So being the only place that was easy for me to access i got there at 12 to nine. The door was locked. I could see the entire team standing there. I tried to call but they contiued to go about their closing routine i guess being lazy is the cali sandwich way. I just wanted hot water to heat my babys bottle but i guess it was to much work to even open the door to inqure about how i could be served. By the way at Levantines this never happens to me. Even at 5 to nine they still fire up the grill to serve me. So thanks. Ive never tried your food and i never will knowing service comes 2nd.

Just ordered a veal, chicken and fries and sauce on the side
Got home and no sauce in bag!
Also sandwich had no taste!

Always love these sandwiches ever since I was a kid. My folks always took me to the original one in Toronto.

I love california sandwiches and have tried many locations. This location is probably my least favourite sadly. The tomato sauce is bland and the hot chili peppers have barely a spicy kick, especially for extra hot; the peppers are simply sweet. I miss how spicy they used to make them 10 years ago. Also, the parchment paper is not working, the sandwiches are even more soggy by the time I get home to enjoy. I’m pretty sure the parchment soaks up all the sauce because the sandwiches are SO DRY to eat. I love Italian sandwiches and I would go here more because of the location, but the taste and quality doesn’t deliver. I’ve tried this location 3 times over the course of 3 years hoping it’s gotten better, but I guess the Queensway and Vaughan locations know what their doing at least.

I really wanted this place to be good, I remember coming here when it was closer to where I worked and it was such a treat to get the sandwiches. However the last time I went I legitimately thought I had Covid, because the sandwich had no flavor. Good news I do not have Covid, bad news it was definitely missing some flavour this time. However the service was quite lovely.

I don't like to write this but I did not like the sandwich. How sad and disappointed. Bland and not enough sauce. I hope is just me. Great staff I must say.

Bland, overpriced and wrong order. I went in for the 1st time hoping it would be good and trying something new. I asked for a steak sandwich with no sauce, cheese and large olives. Came to $19.95. No drink even. Crazy. They of course put sauce which made it more like a sloppy Joe. Hog food really. The olives were super spicy too. $5.95 I paid for the olives which went to waste cause they are spicy. Will never go back or recommend.

I’ve been to many locations, I’ve never had a bad sandwich! Anyone coming to the GTA MUST have a California Sandwich!

AMaaaaaZing! So we were a bit skeptical about trying this place after seeing the one * star reviews BUT after speaking with the employees they delivered an exceptionally delicious sandwich. It was perfect, hot and fresh! They did mention eat the sandwich ASAP bc yes the sauce and soft bun can get soggy. Go for it!

Took my daughter here for first time. She loved it too. Sandwiches are deliciously messy, felt like I needed a bath afterwards.

Great sandwiches. When I order a hot steak with onions and mushrooms I ask for a bit of sausage so the bun doesn't go soggy.

As close to the orignal as possible. Always fresh.very friendly polite service. And fast service as well

First time trying out their sandwiches. Had the break with cheese, absolutely amazing sandwich! They even offer olives as a side in place of fruits for those that are trying to limit carb intake. Highly recommend!

Worst California sandwiches. Not only do they skimp out on the meats but I ordered sweet peppers yesterday and they tasted off. I ended up with stomach issues. Also ordered rice balls and the cheese in middle was still frozen. Never again! I’ll stick to Queensway or the original on Clairmont

I love this place. I've had their sandwiches probably close to 100 times and I still can't get enough. It's so good every time.

Excellent customer service, fresh buns, perfectly cooked, amazingly good sauce and super clean environment. Nothing left to say but.try it for yourself and you decide.

The sandwich was good, just too messy and bread got all soggy. Kinda limited to what's on the menu, as I under stood it there were 3 different sandwiches to choose from.

Just because I have too. California sandwiches? All 3 choices were Italian style sandwiches!

Good place to try out sandwiches. Does not offer wide variety of choices but all sandwiches are quite big.

I always go here and I love the chicken parm sandwich. Today I decided to try the meatball sandwich for fun and I was extremely disappointed. The meatballs were nasty! The meatballs were like microwaved or boiled or something.nasty.

Thank you for such a delicious meal! I appreciate the staff for keeping the place clean while picking up my order!

Always great. I always get the veal sandwich and I am always more than satisfied. The girl was nice as well. I would say best Italian snout there.

The other locations do it better.there’s nothing spectacular other than keeping you full until you’re ready for your next meal.

How sad and disappointing. I have been to a few locations and grew up on California's veal in Toronto from the back of the house. The sandwiches I know are thick with delicious veal and toppings and sauce but not this location. This location serves this sad single veal that is more bread than veal. It is a tragedy to their family's legacy. If you want delicious, consistent sandwiches, go to Queensway location. Friendly, outgoing and just like the original.

My husband grew up at eating from Clairmount location and has eaten
at many other locations, this is the worst one. Bread was broken soggy and veal poorly wrapped. He wishes they used the original buns they had back then. Cheap on meat
layers as well. So sad

Mmmmm arancini! Almost as good as mama's. Tomato sauce is good. Veal sandwich with provolone is my husband's favorite! It's 2 meals in 1 for him (and he's a big eater!). This location doesn't have rappini, though.

1.20 for mushrooms, 1.20 for cheese, 1.20 for eggplant. There's no courtesy veggies, not even lettuce or tomato. When you pay so much for a sandwich with toppings you're better off going to a restaurant. Quality of chicken and steak is good. The overpriced mushrooms have nothing special. Taste is 8/10. Go to fratelli in Oakville and see what a real chicken sandwich is.

My favorite place for a chicken cutlet sandwich. I went to the original location growing up in downtown Toronto and am so happy there is a location that is close to me. Always a good portion and sandwiches are amazing here. Love it!
