The sandwiches are HUGE but wow it's really tasty! Environment is bright, nice and spacious. The staff didn't seem very friendly and patient though. Seemed annoyed/jaded to answer my questions given that it was my 1st time there (I'm guessing maybe because the staff there are pretty good looking in general, they probably get hit on alot by many male patrons? ️) Overall, the sandwiches are worth trying!
Worst location of California sandwiches! Portions are very inconsistent. Never tastes the same. I used to love coming to this location but never again. The york mills location is where I go now. This location should learn from them!
Omg it was so delicious. I can't even tell you how HUGE these are. I got a mini chicken and it was the size of my head. My bf got the popular veal and it was layers of meat on fresh hot ciabatta bread. They are well staffed, friendly & have a full bar. Able to eat in after showing vaccine info. They deliver too! Salads, desserts & ready to take home pasta, lasagna.yum!
The cashier wasn't friendly at all, and made us feel rushed, customer service clearly doesn't matter to her. After receiving our sandwiches (we ordered 5) we were all very disappointed, it's like the sandwiches were just thrown together, they weren't even cut in half properly. To be honest, I will never go back to this location again, we traveled all the way from downtown (Dundas & Bathurst) because the location on Claremont was closed. I've been going to California Sandwiches since I was a child and have only ever been to the downtown location and personally it's the best one.
Sandwiches where very good costumer service extremely rude. I also would suggest to low the music volume considerate that your employees can't hear the costumers
Great sandwiches and pasta. This is a go to for veal and chicken sandwiches. The portions are really big. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is always clean and inviting.
Although this is the first time to the Queensway location, it is equally as good as the original in Little Italy, which I have been going to since the '70s
Great place for to go steak or veal sandwiches served Italian style with loads of tomato sauce on a bun. Served sweet or hot to your preference and optionally piled Muth mushrooms and onions as well.
This is a seriously good, seriously massive sandwich so be hungry or take advantage of the fact that they pre-cut them in half to share with a friend.
There are other hot table options as well, and a selection of California sandwich branded gelatos but you come to a place like California sandwiches for their great steak or veal sandwich.
Remember to have plenty of napkins handy, things will probably get a little messy but definitely worth it.
Parking at this location is available and accessible via the southbound Dufferin entrance or via castlefield Rd. There are lots of spots but they fill up.
Maybe I'm looking at things with rose-tinted glasses, but the veal sandwich of yesteryear was better. It's still good, mind you, but it seems the bread is overwhelming the veal, which also isn't quite as hot and fresh as I remember.
Best eggplant sandwiches in T. O! Great service and the sandwich was so fresh. The bun wasn’t even soggy which is hard to find. Sauce almost as good as my nonnas!
This location has the best hot table & sandwiches. Great portions - totally worth your bucks. Their location is very well maintained & their customer service is superior. I always have a great experience when I visit, their employees really ensure that you are satisfied. Try it out for yourself
Bring your appetite, these sandwiches are super-sized, sauce is from scratch chicken always doubled in size spilling over the edges of the kaiserbun. Everything super fresh. Highly recommend
Lots of delicious options for the omnivores. The eggplant sandwich is incredible and filling for vegetarians. Careful! It's hot so don't burn your mouth.
The sandwich was okay at best, not much flavour and barely any tomato sauce. Overall, the sandwich was not worth the price or the 20 minutes I had to wait.
Overpriced tasteless sandwiches and toppings cost alot more for less quantity:/ other places don’t even charge if u want onions on it what a joke. Also, the females running the front need to SMILE more! No friendly service.
This place used to be great, I've been going here for ten years. The other day when I went I was so disappointed, the veal on the sandwich was missing salt, definitely tasted old, chewy and dry. Tomato sauce used to fill your mouth, now they hardly put any. Really? Cheaping out of tomato sauce? ! Com'on Ralph, get it together, you should have better integrity than that.
Used to be great. No sauce in the 4 sandwiches ordered, extra $ for each topping and they cheap out on that too, meat isn’t cooked with any flavour. After spending $70 on our meals we ended up having to cook our own sauce and toppings so the sandwiches wouldn’t go to waste. Left a bad taste in our mouths and will not order again.
I love California sandwiches and I go to the one all the time at Queensway or the one at Warden I got one from here yesterday and it was not good. The sauce taste like it came from a can. Maybe it was just an off day but not happy.
Fast friendly service lots of options at lunch time from hot table and as always amazing veal and steak sandwiches topped just the way you want them I give this place 10 stars
My partner ordered food from here last night, paid 37$ for 2 medium veal sandwiches with extra sauce. What do we get? An overpriced bread sandwich. This location is SUPER DISAPPOINTING! The veal was just lost in all the bread, and not to mention how SMALL the sandwich was compared to the original location on claremont. If you want to have a good sandwich go to the original location in little italy, this place is a complete rip off. I wish I could put zero stars this place doesnt even deserve the 1.
This location doesn't disappoint. Pre-Covid huge selection of fresh trays made daily, sandwiches are great but their catering menus also never disappoint. The Lasagna trays which ever one you order are always done nicely, they have gone above and beyond to satisfy even off menu when I have asked. They have always accommodated. They are great when you are having small family meals or pre covid large gatherings. Food is always great. Everyone can make a mistake and even when that happens they jump and fix the issue immediately. Customer that is always satisfied with them. Highly recommend them. Thanks again and I will be in for another couple of trays soon:) buon Natale
California Sandwiches is my happy place. Especially this location. The other locations are newer and have more space (and I’m happy they exist so I can satiate my cravings across the GTA) but this place is the real deal. Tucked away on an unassuming residential street.you get the real authentic your-grandpa-ate-here-when-he-was-a-recent-Italian-immigrant feeling. Plus how can you not love this food? Even though I’m vegan now, I opt for a sauce bun with mushrooms and sweet peppers. It’s heavenly. Plus the olives? ! Don’t even get me started.
When friends or family are visiting Toronto I always try to make this a stop - these sandwiches are truly punch you in the gut with happiness and carbs satisfying. I’m craving one right now. I wish this was hyperbole but they’re just too freaking good.
This is my second visit. First time I had was at North Queen etobicoke, it was great. But this around it was the best. Even though I ordered same. Veal sandwiches.
Not as good as other locations in Mississauga, the sandwiches didn’t taste as good, and smaller than the usual, not referring to the mini veal. The service was great, not the veal or chicken sandwiches.
Was here three/four weeks ago and their standard has drastically declined. I had one of their classics, the veal sandwich, how could this go bad? Very little veal and other toppings. Sandwich was floury or doughy.
This is one of mt favourite places but the experience was ruined with a soggy sandwich, complained and than recieved another i could not finish either because the food tasted as if itd be sitting.
Great veal sandwiches. Delicious hot foods.everything about the food is good. Even an amazing selection for the vegetarian. Parking is a little sketchy though and very tight. The place is meant to be a pedestrian accessible place.
Place gets very busy at lunch so keep that in mind! Also line up to your right otherwise risk getting yelled at to form a single file just like you're back in elementary school.
If you're in the sandwiches then this is the place for you Aviance the service the food basically I had an amazing time and I always look forward to going to this place
California sandwiches is one of my favorite restaurants. They serve large veal, chicken or eggplant sandwiched which taste great. I usually cut my sandwich in half it so big. If you are hungry, it will definitely fill you up. Nice location, clean and the service was good.
Used to love this place until they got too big and cocky. Last sandwich I had there had literally less than 1/2 inch of meat on it. I sent feedback on their website but never even got a response. What used to be a wonderful family business has turned into a large uncaring corporate chain. Too bad.
Great quality and huge portion size. Had the veal and my bf had the eggplant. Both tasted great! There was a long wait to get our food but worth it once it arrived.
Used to like this location and it's fairly close to me but twice now I've had the eggplant sandwich and all I saw was the bun; to see the eggplant I almost needed a magnifying glass. Taste was good though. I like other locations better, way better portions. I would return if portions were better as staff is pleasant and place is nice.
I find even though this is a family owned chain of restaurants the quality of food is very different between them I've been to 10 of the 13 restaurants and find this location on Dufferin St about middle of the pack. The food and service are good but not excellent like Queensway or Crestwood or the original on Claremont. The worst one I've ever been in is the one in the heartland in Miss.
This is probably the best location I've been too Sheesh, gorgeous inside and great attitude with the atmosphere the employees give off! 10/10 would come again!
It's okay - lots of butter and salt for when you have unhealthy cravings. Their parking lot attendant behaves like a sub-human troll though; it's unfortunate that this is the first and last impression many people have of the restaurant - and enough to keep me from going back.
It isn't what it used to be. The mushrooms are from a can but they could at least sauté or season them a bit? $14 for a sandwich that's relying almost soley on the chicken cutlet to make it good is abit much
Food is good, but parking is horrendous. Even with valet it's difficult to park during peak times. Save yourself some headaches and park down the street
I’ve been a loyal customer of the Claremont location for over 10 years, so this review pains me to write but the dufferin location is awful. Went in on a Sunday and waited over 15 minutes for a tiny Caesar salad (rip-off!) and a steak sandwich. First of all cashier kept moving bags and answering phone while I stood in front of her and waited (how many times can one gal rearrange 3 paper bags?). Secondly - the women cooking need to have the health inspector called on them (what I’m doing next after review!). One inch long fake nails and no gloves is not hygienic. Neither is handling food after you spend 10 minutes wiping down a counter and fail to wash your hands in between.
The nail situation is disgusting. I watched as she used her bare, unwashed after handling dirty rag, inch long fake nails to handle the cooked chicken cutlets. Proper food handling course is in order; I shudder to think what goes on that you can’t see. The cool kept asking for her drink and they all were chatting and joking around, wiping a filthy workspace, while I waited for what turned out to be a major disappointment. Soggy rubbery steak (steamed?) and half cooked onions. What happened to California’s amazing food and service? The people working at Dufferin don’t seem at all concerned with food quality (slapped on the bread unevenly not cut or cooked properly and the nails ewww). Counter service was the opposite of friendly. Will never go back but will be calling public health!
This location by far is my new favorite. It's clean, bright, spacious. There was a very good hot table. I went only for the eggplant sandwiches but. Wow! There were moist delicious, fresh BBQ wings, pastas, rice balls, salads, tiramisu and more. Great tasting food. Must try. Excellent for dining in. Great service too. Girls were very helpful and friendly.
York Location Review - I heard so much about California Sandwiches that I had to try it. This location is large with lots of of seating. I ordered the Chicken Sandwich with sauteed onions, jalapenos, cheese and Mushrooms. When my order was called, I must have missed hearing it, when they called it the second time and I was about to get it, the lady at the counter practically yelled at me for not getting it on first call The sandwich was huge. Wasn't sure if I could eat all of it. Well after a solid 15 minutes, it was all done and I was stuffed.
Why the 3 stars you ask? Well apart from from being chastised from the lady at the counter (-. 5 star), I expected the sandwich to taste AMAZING. But in the end, it was just okay tasting. Not Fabulous. It also wasn't bad by any means, it was meh. I feel like I could have made it in my kitchen and it would taste the same (-1.5 stars).
After speaking to a few people, they said I should have had the Veal instead. I will go back next week and try it. Maybe it's just the chicken sandwich that's blah. Stay tuned for an update.
We love California Sandwiches because their food is so good and the quality is awesome! This is a chicken with cheese, rapini and sauce on the side) I highly recommend California Sandwiches!
Sterile and cold space. Why do they play loud dance music at 9: 30 a.m? No wonder the place was empty. Mediocre espresso and the it only get 2 *'s for a good latte enjoyed by companion. I won't be back.
Excellent meat ball sandwiches and veal cutlets and chicken cutlets sandwiches and mini steak sandwiches along with a variety of delicious delectable Italian dishes that want you to come back for more and more always! The open concept restaurant is inviting and comfortable and makes you feel relaxed and very good while eating your sandwiches or Italian food with a good close friend always! Simbario, Vivo Valence, Catamaran, Calabria, Italy, indeed does rule in culture, Catholic Faith and reason, warm, intelligent, classy people and outstanding food choices that are all organic and fresh and thus healthy to the human palate! Thank you, very kindly, Papa family for starting California sandwiches! I am a regular with my DJ friend Nick Lamacchia of Midnight Express Disc Jockey Services! Your paesano and cousin, Salvatore (Sam) Tassone di Francesco (Ciccio) Tassone e Rosa Tassone. My father Frank is deceased and is in Heaven enjoying a sandwich in Heaven with my grandparents Salvatore and Baba Chiara Tassone. Merry Christmas and Happy, Spiritual New Year 2019. PEACE and Love
First time going to this location and the last The food was good I'll give them that A customer was flurting with me like a complete degenerate but the staff was very friendly the price was ok.
