Congee Queen - Markham(Hwy7/McCowan)

I used to love congee queen but it had gotten way too hyped. I recently ordered take out from here and the portions were smaller than I would have expected for the price. It is a place i would dine in with company but i would not order take out again. There are plenty of other Cantonese restaurants in the area that offer better food and value.

I had the L4, Chicken & Preserved Sausage with Rice in Hot Pot, was a flavorful combination that left me craving more. The G8, BBQ Pork with Honey, was a sweet and savory delight that perfectly complemented the overall meal. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and friendly service added to the positive experience. A definite go-to spot for delicious congee and more in Markham!

I ordered Uber eats from this location and was shocked at how salty the food was. The hot and sour soup tasted like pure soy sauce and I had to add water to the wonton soup. I've eaten here in person without this issue before, so it could just be the dishes I ordered.

Called in for take out twice last weekend. Food is always ready when they said it would be. Food is hot and taste great.

Gorgeous interior with plenty of tables and seats for all your needs.

The compact nature of the store actually allows the staff to move around equite efficiently. Compared to similar stores, I did not have to worry so much about flagging down staff.

The food is quite good. The ingredients can change from store to store, it seems, as I had ordered a golden bowl (a crispy golden shell in the shape of a bowl), but it came out made with some kind of white fried noodle, which was still quite good. The portions are generous.

Would recommend.

Omg, the fried rice here is a million times better than in Ottawa! I ordered soft shell crab fried rice, and it was super flavorful. I really wanted to eat the whole dish, but it was so big I had to take a doggy bag. Well worth the price of $21.

The food here is not bad. The quality is usually decent and delicious. The service however is extremely poor. They prioritize the Uber Eats/Take out orders over their customers. A cup of water can take about ten minutes and our meal in general usually takes over 30 minutes to come.

This restaurant is becoming worse and worse. It used to be a lovely place for gathering but now just awful. The waiters and waitresses won’t even talk to you sometimes. The bowls and cutlery appears barely cleaned. When we ask for a new one they just snatch ut angrily and throws a new one at you. Seriously? Not even a “sorry” or “let me get you a new one”, just endless attitude towards their customers. I hate what this place has become. It is genuinely awful to eat here if you’re not cantonese, by the way. If you speak mandarin or is white, black, or indian, get ready to be ignored the entire time and get ready for the worst service ever. Genuinely appalling a place like this can still run. So incredibly disappointing. It’s just so terrible to see.

As I was typing this a waiter just ignored us AGAIN. This review went from three stars to two stars to one. If I could make it zero I would.

The food quality is declining. Congee and noodles in soup were okay. The garlic fried rice has no taste in it.

Bad service attitude, the deserts were horrible like the sago was cooked too mushy, the drinks tasted like sugar water.

Large menu at congee Queen. I always end up getting congee, turnip cakes, empress fried rice. Can’t go wrong with those items. The bbq section is also quite good. Take out food could be better

I was waiting for 15 minutes at the BBQ counter with not customer around me. But there are 2 Girl and a man at the counter. No one asked me what I need. Finally I go asked the girls “ how can I buy the barbeque” she said.you had to come to me take a order. What kind of service is there.

Consistent, comprehensive and good HK-style dishes and creations, with the quality and quantity unchanged over the years.

I used to come here when I was a teenager and 15 years later it's the same great dining experience.

Mind you, this is not a fancy restaurant. It's a no-frills, counter seating, convenient and quick place for authentic Chinese dishes, like big bowl congee of different varieties (my family's favorite in the "king supreme" one), a diverse section of rice rolls (they make them better than more than 90% of dim sum restaurants which also charge more), and stir fry noodles (we like the stir fry beef ho man and Singaporean fried noodle the most).

They seem to also be a favourite amongst regional police officers! Maybe out of 5 visits, 3 of them I would see either a team of officers or an officer buy takeout BBQ meat rice for a meal.

The one thing they can improve on is service. We had a tall young man as a server recently; he was grumpy and wasn't a good communicator when we asked some straightforward questions about the menu choices.

Otherwise, they are clean and have ample pandemic measures in place to keep diners and staff safe.

No wonder they have more than 5 chains in the GTA - there's a reason behind their popularity.

The other thing is that comparatively many restaurants' quality have gone down since COVID occurred. Maybe the original chefs left, maybe the freshness of the ingredients isn't as good because of shipment issues, but Congee Queen is one of the very few that have maintained their own standard exactly how I remember them all these years, despite the past 1.5 years. So excellent work and please keep it up!

It was a great experience at Congee Queen. They followed covid protocols with checking the vaccine passport. The service was decent, but the food was amazing. Everything was fresh and hot when it came to our table. The sweet and sour pork was super crispy, the congee was seasoned well, and the fried chicken leg was really nice. The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. I think this was the best experience I had at Congee Queen. Will definitely be back!

Tried to place an order over the phone at this location and the lady I spoke to was very rude. Decided not to order anything and taking my business elsewhere.

I saw the sign of the restaurant and decided to have a late night bite at the Congee queen restaurant. The dining area is big and can accomondate lots of people. The staff are rushing around even though the place was not too busy at 9 pm. They were setting up for the next day's service. It is understandable, but it makes for a rushed atmosphere to eat your food quickly pay and get out before 19pm closing time. The food tasted good, hot, fresh and was served quickly. If you go make sure you arrive at least an hour and a half before closing.

I called today at 9: 30 pm inquiring about whether they had any vegetarian congee, and what kind of vegetarian it is. A woman picked up, started from being impatient, to being sarcastic, to being nasty, going on and on. I actually had to apologize to get off the phone.

Also according to her, they don’t have any congee without animal products in. I hope they make that clear on the menu.

Dined in here yesterday. Very dirty with flies buzzing around while we eat. The food was ok but not great for the price. Rice was very dry, bbq pork very fatty, the clams with black bean sauce was all small size cheap clams, the cook was too rough with the dish to the point every clam was empty with only sauce and garnish because they all fell out, then you have to hunt through the entire dish for clam meat ‍️

I called in to order some food and the women taking my call was extremely rude. How do you expect people to give you business? Never again!

Rude front desk. Done with this chain permanently. Utterly disgusting attitude. You should not hire staff who doesn’t like to provide customer service.

We got take out and ordered: lobster, stir fried noodles, soft shell crab fried rice, Singaporean style noodles, flat beef noodles, pork, oysters, turnip cake and soup. With the exception of the soup that everyone said was too salty (I didn't have any) everything else was great. We even had left overs for several days.

This restaurant is usually quite busy but typically seat customers within a timely manner.

It's a good restaurant to have a quick bite or try some afternoon specials (because it comes with a drink! We like the hot milk tea).

Food is cooked well here and the flavours are yummy. Only problem we have CONSISTENTLY is that the food does not come together at the table in a timely manner. For example, if we decide to order separate dishes instead of sharing everything, sometimes one person can be waiting for thirty minutes before their meal arrives (which is annoying because the rest of the party is either finished their food or their food is cold if they waited for one person's dish to come).

The congee queen at Kennedy and Sheppard blows this one out of the water (in all aspects) but if they managed the timing of the food-to-table better, the restaurant would be comparable (in a good way).

Always best stop for quality tasting chinese food. Affordable price and hefty servings. Try their salt pepper squid, softest texture ever. The bbq duck is also a fave.

We waited for 1.5 hrs for the fried rice. The first one came spicy but we mentioned to take it off. Then change to another order, it takes forever. Waitress ignoring you. The table beside for seated 15mins after us and they already finished eating and gone.eventually no rice on our table and we wasted 1.5 hrs there. What the heck.should be 0 star.

This place serves Inexpensive quality food. A bit greasy but washing down with congee or tea will then be fine. Do expect wait time even you have a reservation.

Food is fine if you are looking for a quick bite. The place is clean with modern decor. The food quality is pretty good but the taste is very ordinary. I usually order Cantonese Fried noodle and steam rice dough stuffed with shrimp. The service is extremely quick and dishes are fair size.

The fish broth noodles are great with two toppings that you choose yourself. We also have the congee queen special chop suey. All taste so great, but for that small portion of chip suey which costs 15.5 it is such a rip off.

This is a great Chinese restaurant with a large selection. Their specialty is congee, and they have many combinations. I also enjoy their other Chinese dishes. There are tables for small and large groups. Some even have a lazy Susan, so that it is easy to share dishes. This restaurant can get noisy when crowded.

I love these juicy slimey chicken balls the so slippery just side down my throat and my grandma like its very much.very yummny

Friendly staff and prompt service. We kept it simple and ordered a couple of plates for the table. Food was great and the kids loved it.

Food is okay but we ordered like a noodle but they gave us small portions they gave us more meat and less noodle

I've eaten here several times and I do enjoy the experience. I'm not an expert in Chinese food origins so take the following for what it is worth. I enjoy the food here. I think it is better than what I normally get closer to my house and feel it is closer to what I grew up with when comparing to the most popular restaurants in Markham. Would recommend.

Wow, this place is POPULAR. Stopped last night on a whim and had a great meal. My wife ordered the seafood congee And I had to house special pad Thai. My wife's order came almost immediately as that's her house special I'm assuming they have lots ready. The pad Thai came a few minutes after that and both are very delicious. I will warn you the servings are large we realized we really could have just shared one of the servings between us. Food is very tasty and service is quick.it is technically a restaurant but it felt a little bit more like a diner as a tables are very close to each other.if you're looking for a romantic dining this is not the place. If you're looking for a great meal that comes very quickly and is very cost-effective then this is the place for you. Bon appetit

The restaurant offers a lot of choices on their menu and you're sure to find something that will interest you. In general the place is clean and seems somewhat new. However the service barely gets a passing grade. Some of them seemed asleep and some of them just seemed disinterested. The food is not bad and not very good either. So everything was pretty average. Except for the portions which are pretty big. You do get your bang for your buck.

It was a great place for a quick bite and so comfy Chinese food.
We walked in around afternoon time and the prices were very reasonable.
Definitely a go to place when in town.

Although the place is busy and may seem like you will be there for hours, it only takes a short amount of time for you to find a table. Great when coming with a group of people because there are a bunch of different food choices on the menu. I'd definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

Congee queen is good at every location I've been to. There are large servings with great food and fast service.

Good food and the people who didn't like it are the ones who couldn't afford it because they are on welfare and they are retarded from their mom dropping them a dozen times down a flight of stairs.

Congee Queen is always good! My go 5o place for Congee obviously and fried clams in black bean sauce.

Food was average but this makes is so busy. Trying to find a staff to pay our bill was hard! In addition we wanted to order desserts and the waiters just kept asking us if we wanted the bill. Once the order for desserts went through, we waited another 10-15 minutes. Which we felt bad since the waiters had already cleared our table. So it looked like we were just sitting there doing nothing.

Always great Chinese food at this place. I recommend the General Tao chicken which is sweet yet spicy but always yummy.

Amazing food, selection is amazing. Service is fast even if the restaurant is packed. If you buy take out they give you amazing black boxes that can be used for anything.
