Updated Review: Oct 2023. Nicole is the absolute best and I'm so happy she was there to assist with a passport renewal. Some of the negative reviews may be due to previous staff under different Consul. There are more services offered and overall more happiness and efficiency in the office. Thank you all for such a pleasant experience. Dios te bendiga.

I read all these bad reviews and I want to say that my experience yesterday was totally different from what I read here. They were very helpful with me and my brothers too. I’m so grateful with these people and the way that all of them treated us.

They dont pick up calls ok they might be short staffed, dont check their voicemails or atleast wmpty them so new callers can leave a message. They say to email incase if no one responded to call and its been 3 business days no response yet.

Edit after seeing the reply from embassy Feb 15,2022

I have recieved their response like after 10business days or so for sure its after a week during that time i managed to get information from the government employee in Dominican republic who is aware of the information i need. Honestly this place or staff needs to focus more to provide atleast "basic service" to the people who attend them.

Feb18,2022 in person visit:
Well i have to say they are pretty helpful and fast for in person attendings. Got my work done and also lately they are picking up calls and responding to them. But still delay in sending the replies to emails. Anyhow i had a great experience in person and there is also an underground parking across the intersection on victoria street as this building is right at the intersection. Min $5 for 30mins but expect to pay $20 atleast before you walkout which is fare con sidering how hard it is to find parking in downtown. Hope this helps because i was looking out for parking options before i decided to visit this place.

I would give 0 stars if I could. It's unbelievable how an important Dominican government office has such negative work ethics. This office never answers phone calls, their mail box is full because I'm assuming they do not even bother checking the messages people leave. The service that I have been there for has taken months and still uncompleted. This is unacceptable.

I’m very sad to leave a negative review because the employees I’ve dealt with have all been very cordial and lovely. However, this doesn’t negate my experience trying to renew my passport. I called in October 2021 and asked how long will the process take - I was assured by multiple employees it is 4 weeks. Not 4 months. 4 weeks. I called about 3-4 times to make sure I get the same answer; it was 4 weeks each time.

I submitted my application in person on Nov 3 2021. The office employee once again assured me it’ll take about 4 weeks. I had travel planned for late December so I needed this reassurance.

We are now in January and on Jan 12 2022 I still don’t have my passport. I was told that in *some* cases the documents are sent to the DR for another check and in that case ***no one knows how long it’ll take***. Imagine that? I get that this is out of consulate’s control. But WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS WAS A POSSIBILITY? I wouldn’t have applied for a renewal then if I knew. I was also told conflicting info: one employee said that every application for a naturalized citizen (like myself) is sent to the DR. Another employee said that’s not the case and it’s just random. Where is the truth?

I also haven’t been able to reach anyone over phone this week. I’m sorry but this is horrible experience. We’re talking about important documents here, people’s entire lives can be put on hold because someone didn’t provide accurate information and misled them.

Beware and if you have to go through the consulate, plan accordingly.

Edit: Based on consulate’s reply below, I just sent an email to the provider address (on Jan 13 2022).
I appreciate the reply, thank you. My issue isn’t primarily with how long the renewal is taking — my issue is that no one told me there is a chance it can take significantly longer than 4 weeks to be done. If I knew this, I wouldn’t have applied for renewal because I still had a few months left on my passport.

Edit #2: It is now Jan 20 and I’ve yet to receive a reply over email. No one picks up the phone either. Horrible.

Terrible experience. These people are an embarassment to the Dominican Republic!
Let me tell my story.

In July of 2021, we went in to the dominican embassy as we were moving to the Dominican Republic in September for work. We went in looking to have our 2 children's Ontario report cards translated so that we could register them here in DR.
Upon arrival, we spoke to "Esteban" who assured us 100 times that this would be taken care of in 2 weeks. We didnt have american dollars on us to pay that day, so we came back the following day. The following day we paid in full plus gave extra $40 for shipping to DR. Esteban also informed us that it would be much cheaper for us if we made our kids Dominican citizens, as foreigners are forced to pay alot more money to attend school. For that process, he asked that we leave him my sons canadian birth certificate. We were skeptical but he assured us we would have everything in 2 weeks.
Well it's now been 4 months and my children are here in DR and NOT IN SCHOOL. We went to the ministry of education in Santo Domingo and they are telling me that they cant do anything for us without the original birth certificates! They also say it was not necesary to make them dominican citizens! So now Im in a foreign country and our kids paperwork and birth certificates are nowhere to be found after PAYING IN FULL 4 MONTHS AGO!
We call and call and call and nobody EVER answers the phone. I've had family members call and once got through.after explaining our situation, they were told they would receive a callback and never did either.
I'm not sure who else to complain to at this point, I just know these people are an absolute joke and cannot be trusted. PLEASE BEWARE BEFORE YOU GO THROUGH WHAT WE'VE HAD TO GO THROUGH

The staff's human touch makes you feel the warmth of Dominican Republic, it's people and wonderful Subtropical climate.

Despite the rigorous rules and standards any Consulate must follow to perform their duties, I found here they gave me all the information and flexibility needed for me to put together all necessary paperwork.

Located just a 10 to 15 minute walk from Union Station, you will have easy access to most items you may need for filing whatever service application you may need but forgot or didn't know was a requirement like passport photos, etc.

It was a good experience. Everybody made me feel I was back home with welcoming smiles and everything done timely and satisfactory. Keep up the good work.

They never answer the phone, nor do they check their voicemail. YUP, true to the dominican way!

When reading the reviews a pattern is clear, and I personally experienced this as well. Their seems to be a disconnect with the people who answer the phones and the back office people, as soon as we talked to the man in the back office everything was cleared up and all is well. We have dealt with this office a couple of times and overall it feels like a government office, the back office people know 100% what they are doing and get it right!

Haven't been there personally, but I've called the Montreal and the Ottawa embassy and both were not great. I called here and they were friendly and not abrupt, and sent an email with all that I need instead of just telling me. It's refreshing after trying to figure out my Dominican residency stuff for a month

The consulate (person by the name Kenia) provided me wrong information regarding visa requirements to Dominican. According to them i could travel to Dominican without a visa however that was incorrect information. As a result we got returned back from Dominican. After returning back to Toronto we contacted the consulate and met the consulate general in person. They admitted the mistake but failed to take any action or compensate me for my lost air fare.
