You must be patient at Dong Kee because they are always busy even in late nights. However, the food itself justifies it more than enough - it is indeed one of the most delicious and authentic Cantonese restaurants in GTA. If you wanted something authentic full with wok hei, this is the place to go.
How dare they charged tips by imposing it without customers' consent! Who's getting the money anyway? The business owner? ! Or the waiting staffs? ! Will never go back again!
I am a bit tight to order tonight, the most satisfying and delicious is shredded chicken, which is delicious enough, followed by stir-fried beef with cold melon! Stir-fried Beef and Dried Shrimp Vermicelli and Zucchini Casserole are mild in taste! Honey sauce fried raw? Is a bit dry! Remember to note that the restaurant has added a 10% service charge!
Fantastic service, mind numbingly good food, for relatively cheap prices. I did dislike the screaming baby in the table diagonal to me, but I understand that is not the fault of the staff or the restaurant. 5 stars, easily one of my favourite hole in the wall Chinese restaurants.
Always love this place in scarborough. One of my best chinese food restaurant. They restaurant itself is not that big so you better call in and book your table ahead. Food is as tasty as years ago when i first came here. The eel pot rice is a must try and need to reserve ahead. Seafood, normal dishes are great too. Highly recommed for people to go.
It should not be bad for a restaurant that has to wait for a seat after 9 o'clock in the evening. I only ordered home-cooked dishes when I got together with my parents: West Lake beef soup, crispy fried chicken, beef with cold melon, and shredded bean curd with pepper and lettuce. After the dishes came, I found out that this is "Cantonese cuisine, the portion of Northeast cuisine", a big dish. The taste is quite satisfactory, and the beef with cold melon is the most praised. The beef is fresh and tender, and the cold melon is tasty and not rotten. The fly in the ointment is that the store put shredded lettuce in the West Lake beef soup, which is a bit against the harmony. Overall, the taste of the dishes and the ambience are excellent. Some comments complain about the service attitude. I'm sorry that this place serves the neighbors, not a "tall" place. The waiters' style is just like Yangcheng or Hong Kong. They come and go in a hurry, but overall they are not bad.
Everything I figured was good except the language barrier. The restaurant makes a decent amount of income, I believe. One terribly busy restaurant in Scarborough. Don't understand why the management doesn't consider appointing a person who can also serve other nationalities. I had to take back the food moddle of the night due to a complete messed up situation with the order. The staff didn't understand what I was ordering at all.
That was a takeout experience many years ago when I attended a church fellowship gathering. Found a cockroachin the container. Lucky that the cockroach was on the rice so I could throw the whole container away. That night, I attended church church fellowship with an empty stomach. I will never buy from this restaurant again!
Add $3 to my bill for xo sauce, which was supposed to come with the dish as per the menu. The waitress didn't notify us at time of ordering but she insisted she had done so. With the anger show on her face, I paid ~ I paid for the lesson. I just won't visit again.
Cantonese restaurant that has some 'wok hay' in their dishes. In my opinion their dishes are more oily than I like. Service and atmosphere are average. Prices are in line with other Cantonese restaurants in the area.
Best to make a dinner reservation or arrive before 5: 30pm to get a seat as it is a very popular restaurant.
Food is good, I would say 8 out of 10. Price is good. But the service/communication, isn't that good, 4 out of 10. Doesn't mean the food will be delayed.
But if you just want to enjoy food for a good price, and doesn't care about the service it's a good place.
Really tasty food, although I felt like they oversalted most dishes. The atmosphere and service was typical of the more traditional chinese restaurants in the GTA, which I'm okay with. I would recommend this spot for some cozy meals. The claypot eel rice was my favourite.
It seems to be popular amongst locals, and I would come here again too. Be warned that, if you're not Chinese, you might stand out like I did ahaha
Very bad service, the waiters were very rude to my family members and me. I got screamed at for asking how long it would take to get a table. The food was very so-so. I don't recommend this place.
We always make a reservation and pre-order the Taishan Eel Clay Pot Rice is a must every time we visit this restaurant, this rice also comes with eel bone soup. The next must have is the clams, their lamb pot is also very good but unfortunately we didn’t see it posted on the wall not too sure if it’s only offered during colder months. The waiter and waitress is very friendly and also scoops the rice from the clay pot for us. Highly recommend making reservations as this restaurant is always vey busy at any given time.
I have eaten at the restaurant for ten years, and I like their steamed chicken with wolfberry and red dates, garlic pork ribs, eel rice and shredded pepper fermented bean curd dishes, and I feel like I am back home. The sauce and pot gas of this restaurant are very special.
We have a 7pm reservation for 7 people on Friday night, we understood we were 10mins late and we were willing to wait when the host said the table for us was getting their bill. However, after 45 minutes, the host have seated a table of 10 people and a table of 5 (which we heard their reservation is 7: 30). There’s no rules no manners and very inefficient of how they work for a “popular restaurant “.
First came the milky fish soup on the house. A bit over salted but otherwise surprising good tasting comparable Chinese restaurant house soup, I can taste the quality ingredients used to make this.
Then come the pork & beans, tasted great, beans were fresh and crunchy, a little over oily but otherwise above average in my view. Priced below most restaurants for the same amount & quality.
Fry chicken was juicy but unspectacular. Price for a sim.
Sweet & sour pork was exceptionally good, crunchy on the outside, fry just enough not to be too dry, right amount of sweetness.
Eel pot rice came in much bigger than I expected, that must be preordered an hour in advance as the rice are cooked straight out of the clay pot. That is the only traditional method to get the crunchy rice chips layer to form around the pot. Don’t waste the dried rice layer, they are super tasty mixed in with the eel & soy taste along with the smokiness. That is one of their signature dish.
We were SHOCKED at how good this EEL Claypot Rice was We got Chinese Eel Claypot Rice, Shredded Chicken and Minced Meat & Green Bean w/ Olive Veggie. This Chinese Eel Casserole Rice was AMAZING, it had a great amount of sliced Eel, super flavourful, tender, placed on a bed of Rice cooked in a Claypot, it had SO MUCH crispy bits at the bottom, this Rice fed 10 people, definitely great value and super tasty! Shredded Chicken came in one whole Chicken that was seasoned beautifully with Ginger Powder, Chicken was cooked perfectly, juicy and tender! Minced Meat & Green Bean w/ Olive Veggie was also delicious, it came in a huge portion, the Meat Sauce was wonderful, so good to go with Rice!
