FIrst National Financial is an awesome lender. I recently renewed my mortgage on a 5 year fixed term and my mortgage specialist Edwin Narayan went above and beyond getting me a great rate. I definitley recommend First National Financial and especially Edwin!

If I could give any advice, it would be to avoid this bank for all residential and commercial business. My wife and I were referred through a broker to use first national financial for our mortgage. The pre approval took some time but we eventually received it and continued on with our home search (first red flag). We finally found our house in the summer and were told we would have no issues. About 1.5 weeks prior to closing, I checked in to see the status of our mortgage papers and if there were any issues to which I was told there are no problems. About a week prior our lawyer requested the paper work to get started and nothing came (second red flag). Three days prior to our closing we were told that an employer check needed to be done which is ridiculous as this could have been done WEEKS in advance. After inconveniencing my HR they agreed to do the employment check on such short notice but they had a policy where they can only email confirmation instead of phone to keep a paper trail. FNF then denied our mortgage two days prior to our closing and left us scrambling to find a new lender in such a short period of time. I ended up incurring costs related to extending my purchase agreement, storage, utilities, and hotels as we needed to figure out the situation. Their solution was to move us into a B lending situation to get the deal done which was ridiculous. We ended up using another lender which got all the paperwork done within 3 days and we were able to move into our house the following week.

I would never use this institution in the future for any personal or commercial lending needs. Stressful and overall horrible experience.

If you have a choice, pick another lender. I have been with them for 8 years, never missed a payment. Called today to skip a payment due to personal reasons which I disclosed to them. They said sure, but we charge $85.00 which I am ok with. But he advised me that they put it on your credit bureau as a missed payment. You read their website and they say they are there to help customers. All this shows me is they are totally profit minded and don’t care about their customers. They are very insensitive towards their customers. Other mortgage companies and lenders offer a skip a payment and don’t belittle you when you are in need. Stay away from them if at possible. I originally went with them when I purchased my house because they had the lowest interest rate at the time. STAY AWAY!

Updated: After the review below First National Financial reached out to me. Their representative Jennifer Kataoka was exceptionally helpful and cordial. I was happy with her approach towards handling the whole situation. She has provided multiple options for us to review and we can take more informed decision now. Appreciate their help regarding this.

I had the worst possible conversation with the customer service representative from the collection department. I called in to get some information about my payment options and the customer service representative was very very rude with me. She was opinionated and didn’t provide a cordial service which is usually expected from an employee of an organization like this. I am very disappointed. They need to give more training to their representatives.

Would not recommend and will not renew my mortgage with them in the future. Required assistance with deferring a payment by 6 days and they have no program or ability to do this, instead they informed me it would be reported to the credit burrow for late payment. Please save yourself the headache and borrow from elsewhere.

I would not recommend! If by chance you fall into hard financial struggles due to sickness or disability they are not forgiving! Asking about skipping a payment and adding to the end of term, or even moving the date of your payment by a few days was a very big no! No skipping payments and if I want to move my payment date it would cost me $150 and they report to your credit for a missed payment.much better out there!

If I could give 0 stars I would. Please do yourself a favor and find another company to get financing from. Communication from this group is awful to put it mildly. Similar issues right before closing as others have indicated in their complaints. Not sure how many people at this company actually know what they are doing, but we should be frightened that they have access to confidential information. Check out their standard answer to the negative comments, this place is a joke.

Prone to errors and completely incompetent! Choose another lender - I wish I had. Their Underwriter made errors on my closing papers and both my lawyer and I have been struggling to correct then before close. They said they’d fixed the one mistake but then re-sent my lawyer the same incorrect documents. They also told my lawyer they wanted me to list one loss payee for my insurance, then told them I should not use that one and they would provide a different one. Their errors have already cist me time and inconvenience, not to mention having to reschedule my insurance finalization 3x. But it’s now 3 days before closing and they still haven’t advised what name they want listed (apparently they have several). I am now at risk of losing my house at close simply be they’ve made errors and aren’t fixing them or being responsive.
My lawyer advised that they have these kind of problems with First National all the time.
Steer clear - I will certainly never use them again!

Your confirmation emails of requests need to be improved.
Why can’t you not summarize what the request was about?
Sending me a confirmation number with no other information is useless!
Please, take 1 second of your time and think how this is any helpful to the end user.
…. Even worst is about your “MyMortgage Firstnational” webpage, simply listing all the requests I made and literally saying the same thing by just giving confirmation # with no clue about the requests…. Just confirmation number…. Please stop the laziness!

The absolute worst experience I have ever had setting up a mortgage. I have sent in over 60+ documents and everyday there are more.and I'm putting down 70-80%! And I COULD buy it outright. It has been going on for a month and I'm not sure they are ever going to finally OK this thing and I am a week and a half to possession. Today they asked me to change the possession date on the house I'm selling (not the one they are financing) because it doesn't meet their criteria of being on a weekday. What! Makes no sense. They are the absolute worst. The rate is good but now I'm worried about dealing with these people for the next 5 years. I'm sure it will be equally unpleasant.

First National sent us to deal with FCT notary for our refinancing of our mortgage.
First National provided the money to pay out of previous financial institution as well as a cheque to us. FCT was then supposed to ensure all parties received they cheques. This did not happen.
We signed our papers with the notary end on June and by July 4th still no cheques. Our broker called and called FCT and they finally mailed our cheques on July 7th. The cheques that arrived to us on July 11th were for the wrong amounts and my husband's name was incorrectly spelled.
I called FCT right away and got no where until that afternoon.
We are now July 13th and FCT emailed me first thing this morning to say the cheques were not drawn up yet. I called First National to see if they could do anything (seeing as they provided the money). Their answer to me was that FCT is a separate company and it is up to them to issue the cheques.
I then called FCT and spoke with accounting and told them I wanted my cheques in my hand today. 30 minutes after that conversation the accounting person called me with a tracking number for my cheques.
We will see if they arrive today as promised.

As for First National. I cannot believe how they hire a company to do a job and when their client is being treated like this they sit back and do nothing to help. This is First Nationals money and FCT notary is playing games with it. No company should deal with FCT notary, because they send clients running around and they don't answer calls or emails and provide clients with updates.

It was very easy and self explanatory just had to review and docu sign. We are all so busy in our day to day lives so it was nice that we could renew our mortgage frm our phones at home.

I am a FNF mortgage customer. Bad customer service and HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION with the customer. ANYTHING WRONG THEY SAY IT THEIR POLICY. Maybe change ur policy of ur customers are complaining?

Very happy with the renewal process! Candace Shepherd reached out many months before our renewal date and responded to my questions very promptly. I’m grateful for her reminders because life is hectic and I had completely forgotten about our fast approaching renewal date. I was so nervous that the renewal process was going to be complicated but I’m so relieved we were able to just chose the rate, the term and sign it with our cell phones and submit it.
