So disappointed there were no cashiers on duty just one standing in a closed lane staring at her fingers. Despairing we checked every lane to be sure none open before entering self checkout area. I don’t like to complain so this is hard to write, but something needs to be said about the self check out.
1) customers should be able to choose if they want to use them.
2) Should be used for a couple items not full carts. Watcher could open a check out lane for a customer with a full cart.
3) Customers shouldn’t have to not only bag their own groceries, but also have a tutorial on how to look up codes for each type of lettuce and onion, and to self weigh each thing. I’m not the store’s free employee.
4) Shouldn’t be made to feel like a criminal when the machine tells you to remove a bag, you do, then the watcher of self check out asks you twice why you took a bag off the overloaded square allotted for groceries after you’ve explained twice the machine told you to do so.
5) Checking out your groceries shouldn’t take twice as long as putting them in your cart.
We went out of our way to go to Basics because there’s good value, it’s clean, and it tends to be well stocked but this self checkout experience is so demoralizing we just don’t want to repeat that feeling, so we’ll be finding a new store for our regular shopping.
When I was a girl I worked as a cashier before going to university. Then the checkout machine wasn’t barking at me instead I cheerily chatted with customers. While the customer took a break I took care of the weighing and codes (had them memorized to get people through the line quickly). I bagged their groceries for them. The customer earned free loyalty vouchers to choose rewards. I was so excited about the loyalty program I made sure our whole family grocery shopped there. By the time I was married I had earned a free set of dishes and serving platters.
I realize these days everyone needs to cut costs, but self check out feels like cutting customers to me. Please let’s bring back customer service.

In my experience food basics is a great place to shop, and has better prices than some other places up here in Muskoka but lately I've noticed some of there fruit and veggies have not been very fresh at all. Hopefully this changes a bit, that being said I do realize that it is winter and food like that is out of season but I do see other places with fresher food but all in all a good discount grocery store to shop at.

Great selection of international cuisine items. Always well stocked. The store is clean and tidy. The staff, in general, are great. Prices are reasonable compared to many grocery stores. Their self-check-outs are user-friendly. I do not like self-checkouts.
If we got discounts for using them that would be a different scenario. I worked for years in retail. A friendly cashier is so appreciated by most customers. No one wants to ring their groceries through.
We are customers, what happened to the customer service? Respect for customers.
Self check out is an issue that should be corrected in all stores that uses them.
Many stores have these horrible self-checkout machines
As long as a cashier rings me through I am happy with Food Basic.
