Absolutely fantastic! Great service and atmosphere! Went back and the food was as amazing as the first time. Glad I went back. Fresh, tasty and the presentation was on point. Service was absolutely fantastic.
Has a very nostalgic, home-cooked kind of atmosphere, not fancy but familiar. I ordered the bento dinner and was happy with it, you get a sizeable amount of classic Japanese comfort food (sushi, white rice, tempura, spring rolls, teriyaki chicken/beef) for a decent price. (With tip and drinks it was a little over $40 each.)
The food was not "amazing" but it was very comforting. That's how I would describe the whole experience.
Our server was excellent, we liked her very much. We would come back again.
Lovely neighbourhood spot. Everything was super fresh. We had a mix of things: udon, sushi, rolls, apps. All good. The spicy tuna roll was among the best I’ve had. Friendly, low key staff made it even better. It’s now on our list of regular spots when we’re in Ottawa.
The sushis are really good but the rest is bellow average although the portions are good for the price. The lady's bathroom door could not close and the seats were dirty.
Friendly staff and a charming atmosphere. Food was good and reasonably priced for what it was. Definitely recommend. We chose to eat in the restaurant and there was some obvious wear and tear on the floors that caught my chair and almost made me fall, but that was the only (minor) issue I had.
A fine establishment with wonderful service. Although they have take out we opted for a sit down table. A wide selection of dishes but it's worthwhile to ask the chef what is fresh for the fish options.
My boyfriend and I visited here from Toronto about a week ago. Serena was our server. The customer service was fantastic. She left such a good impression on us and really made our trip. She was incredibly gracious and so accommodating. We will return to this location just to visit her. The sushi was great, quality of the fish was fresh and the pieces were huge. They have tons of sushi options. Highly recommend this sushi spot.
Excellent service and even better food. The sushi was very fresh and the portions perfect. The green tea creme brulee was a perfect mix of sweet and savoury.
We randomly decided to try Genji today and it did not disappoint. We had a variety of maki rolls and ordered two goyoza appetizers because they were that good. The sushi was fresh and was so good.
All my orders were tepid and so soggy. Sushi was warm and tempura was not crispy.just like microwaved frozen food.spoiled family weekend dinner and never coming again.
Great portion of sashimi, cut very thick. Beef teriyaki was well cooked to medium. Tempura needs more work. The shrimp tempura bread can be bigger, and the tempura sauce is too blend. The menu combo can be developed for more sushi + sashimi combo. The servers were attentive and nice. The place is clean.
If you know anything about Japanese food, this is not the place. Chicken teriyaki was basically boiled chicken with teriyaki sauce. “Yaki” means “grilled”! Tuna in roll tasted defrosted. “Salad” was iceberg lettuce with a cherry tomato on top but sauce was in a container UNDER it so you don’t see it until you sadly nibble through it. Never had such bad tempura. Skip it!
Alright sushi, touch expensive, great wait staff. The sushi was kind of warm which was a little concerning as the rolls had a bit of a strong fish smell for sushi. A touch overpriced as I could have gone and eaten at C'est Japon for about the same amount.
Love the staff, they are amazing. The food is not that good, overpriced, and often there was a mixup on the orders- again, staff was amazing though, extremely kind and courteous.
Ordered here many times. Today I ordered and asked if they could include gluten free soya sauce as I'm trying a new diet. Not only they did that but labeled everything too! So sweet, sushi was fresh as usual. Lots of good options for vegans. Spring rolls were tasty.
Everything was AMAZING. You know a place is great when even the vegetables are one of the best things you've ever eaten. We got the beef and eel teriyaki meals with the sweet pink shrimp. Every aspect of the meal was fantastic.
The fish was very good but everything else was mediocre. The service was brutal, our main courses came before the appetizers, some items never came and the waitress was pushy and didn't want to refund items which never came. Water took half an hour to be refilled, I don't see myself coming back here. Also DONT order the tempura, not good.
A huge disappointment. Service was ridiculously slow; 45 to get our appetizers. The sushi is mediocre at best and it's expensive. We've been to ayce sushi restaurants with much higher quality.
We always try to find a Japanese restaurant worth going to during our travels. Ottawa had several options to offer and we chose Genji with its wide variety of traditional as well as unusual offerings.
Being open to trying dishes that are outside of the typical roll-nigiri-sashimi playlist (Genji offers all of that too), we decided to experiment. Uni was fantastic, fresh and delicious. Tuna tartare "pizza" made on a thick fried rice crust/patty was unusual yet yummy. An eggplant appetizer was truly decadent. Loved the maple syrup egg sashimi. A shiitake roll was sweet and almost dessert like. Mango icecream and green tea creme brulee had extremely clean and vibrant flavors.
All that magic reasonably priced and prepared and presented with love and care by a wonderful chef and staff. Highly recommend!
The worst Japanese food I have ever have。place not clean, high price compare to the food, and when we ask why the food is not good?the waitress's answer is the main Chief is not here!
We've been going to Genji for many years and it has been consistently excellent. The staff is super friendly and attentive. All of the sushi rolls that we've tried there are excellent. I also love the nasu dengaku (eggplant with miso sauce), it may not sound like much but it's delicious. Highly recommend this place.
My family and I had dinner in Genji on 9/11, the food is bad. Quality of soup udon is awful, how can a restaurant serve frozen burn udon to customer, that is totally unacceptable. Don’t understand why they got a 4.3 star review. Will not recommend to anyone.
Genji Restaurant is an excellent Japanese restaurant with a stunning selection of tasty meals and outstanding drinks. Staff is helpful and polite. Prices are reasonable for the high quality you get here. Along with Festival Japan, this is definitely the best Japanese restaurant in and around Ottawa.
My wife and I are new to the city and have struggled to find good and fair priced sushi in Ottawa. We ate at Genji last night and our search is now over. Best in town - especially the spicy maki and rainbow rolls. Great staff too.
Travel from Toronto, had my dinner in this restaurant with my gf.here's what we think, food is way too overpriced for the quality of the sushi. $27 and $31 for two different Benton dinner. Rice was over cooked.service was slow.we chose to eat at this restaurant because the other sushi restaurant that's 5 minitues had a line up.
Really liked the food. What we ordered as combos with soup and salad are reasonably priced.
However, the a la carte menus are pricy. I was charged $14 for 3 pieces of tako. Other similar places are about half that. Very tasty, mine you, but seemed some menu items were over priced.
The staff was very friendly and helpful and interactive, as well.
I've been eating at Gengi for 15 years and I love it! The staff are fantastic and always happy! I have brought many of my friends here and they all love it. Sushi is always fresh. The best in downtown Ottawa!
Clean restaurant, and tasty. Nice atmosphere, attitude for customer. Comparing to the all you can eat restaurant, obviously the sushi quality is awesome. Although i havent tried to eat good eel sushi (smells bad) in ottawa, i havent tasted bad one here. I can say this restaurant is the best one about at least eel.
My first time having food at a Japanese place and had a great experience. The atmosphere is good and the service was great. The food was good, I haven't had soba before so it was a little new but still had a good time.
The dinner started off great, and ended not so great. The appetizers from the kitchen and the drinks were amazing, but the sushi was lackluster. The pieces were so big that they were impossible to eat, and my sweet potato roll did not come as described. It was supposed to be topped with a berry sauce and there was none on it, but I guess it wouldn't matter since I couldn't eat the rolls because the pieces were way too big.
High quality Sushi and incredible selection. Presentation is fantastic, we got a dragon roll that actually looks like a dragon! Goes far beyond what you can get at AYCE sushi restaurants.
