Only good for the egg rolls, everything else is total inedible road dumpster trash. Work on your other food too and maybes ya'll will reach back to your glory days. Can't believe the Senators support this place, shame.
Much better and cheaper Chinese food in the city - including the “legendary” egg rolls. We’ve tried it twice now over a few years and twice disappointed. Never again.
As delicious a it's always been. The chow mein & chop suey are full of vegetables and have a great flavour. The honey garlic spareribs are some the best anywhere. And what can I say about the egg rolls? We buy them by the dozen and freeze them to serve to (special!) guests.
Just awful. The general taos chicken is just chicken balls with store bought sweet chili Thai sauce. Super disappointing. The egg rolls taste just like any other open-end egg roll, but with more filling. Plum sauce is very heavy on the ginger. The sweet and sour pork was soggy and the rice (chicken fried and white) were both stale.
The egg rolls are unique and very popular. People drive in from Orleans just for the egg rolls and plum sauce. The egg rolls are plump, generous, and tasty. They are simply the best egg rolls that I have ever tasted.
The GOLDEN Palace is far from golden these days. (2022)
The egg rolls are smaller (less filled) yet the price has increased significantly.
They are also more bland and inconsistent in terms of overall quality…. And they serve 1/2 the amount of plum sauce they used to, which doesn’t even stretch for a dozen!
For the price and poor quality these days … I’ll pass.
By far the worst “Chinese food” I’ve ever come across. And I’ve tried a lot of different Chinese food over the years in different cities across Canada and the US, both westernised and traditional. Will never return. Honestly, food court joints eg Manchu Wok serves better quality food.
Amazing if you just get the egg rolls. Haven't tried the entire menu but everything I've tried is small for the price and mediocre, but that's not why you get from here. Best use is getting the cut in half rolls to put on a platter at a get together unless you can just eat a meal entirely consisting of egg rolls.
The rice was under cook. Only hot sauce they had was Tabasco. Was very rude when I told them the rice was under cooked! Went to pay and was rude! Will NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN!
The staff are very friendly and helpful and the portion sizes are plenty generous. The interior is clean and spacious with room for large gatherings. Their ginger beef is my favourite and I find the prices to be very reasonable
For a family of five the price is not worth it. Would not get food from here ever. They did not even give us fortune cookies so much for Chinese tradition.
The Golden Palace has been a go to place for Chinese food since they opened in 1960. The interior matches the food - exactly what you expect. Most of the diners around me were long time regulars - always a good sign. Remember - this is old school & the egg rolls are to die for. Nothing fancy here - the food has not changed since they opened so if you’re used to authentic downtown Chinese food forget that here - but the egg rolls are still killer.
Giving a two star here for the effort and politeness of the staff. Definately not for the food, that doesn’t get any stars. The eggrolls here, for which they are famous for, definately have gone down hill. The soup was bland, the wonton filling was rubbery and the wrappers were starchy. The general Tao chicken was definately previously frozen, and the sauce seemed like it from a bottle. We also had Cantonese Chow Mein, well, that was disappointing also. Mostly overcooked noddles, broccoli, celery, and some shredded meats, and a couple of chopped shrimp. Over priced, over rated. Save your hard earned money for better quality somewhere else.
Have you been looking for open end eggrolls? This is the place!
I must say, after trying the eggrolls at Golden Palace, I was transported back in time to my childhood. These eggrolls are old school and incredibly hearty, reminding me of good memories from family gatherings and special occasions.
But don't let the old school nature fool you - these eggrolls are packed with flavor and full of meat. One bite and you'll feel like you've hit the jackpot. And the best part? The size of these eggrolls will make your jaw drop - they're massive!
In all seriousness, the eggrolls at Golden Palace are truly something special. They have a perfect balance of crispy exterior and savory filling that make them an absolute delight. They're so delicious that they might just become your new addiction. You might find yourself sneaking into your freezer at odd hours of the night to get your eggroll fix. But don't worry, I won't judge you - i'll be right there with you, elbow deep in a pile of eggrolls.
If you're in the mood for some delicious, nostalgic, and hearty eggrolls, then this is definitely the spot for you. Golden Palace and their eggrolls are calling your name. Trust me, you won't regret it.
I visited yesterday, first time visiting in 40 years. I am glad to see that nothing has changed and its still excellent Chinese food. We were lucky to have Wayne as our waiter and his pride in working their showed in everything he did. We of course had eggrolls along with chicken fried rice, General Tsao chicken and garlic ginger dish that Wayne suggested.
It is as it was 40 years ago, and that in my opinion is an excellent thing. We could not get over how many eggrolls were ordered take out while we dine, had to be over 200.
The decor is the same upstairs and the service is still first class right down to the waiters in the red jackets. Its an experience. There are always things that could be different, washrooms could use a refresh but they were very clean.
The dinnerware is almost original to the opening date, Wayne showed us the date stamp on the bottom of the plates.
Lots of Ottawa Senators dine here as well as lots of politicians, and I believe its the food and service.
It has a charm that you seldom see anymore. We ended up taking almost 2 dozen egg rolls to go for family members.
