Gyugyuya (Downtown Toronto)

Really solid and authentic Japanese curry. I got chicken katsu and the batter to meat ratio was right. Place is really comfy and the waiters were really sweet and polite.

This is hands down my favourite place for Japanese curry! The portions are great, the flavour is awesome, the staff is friendly, and the appearance is cute, warm, and welcoming! Please try it if you haven’t yet, it’s wonderful! Great for having lunch alone and with friends!

Delicious Japanese curry for a comfortable location near Yonge & Dundas. For those that have been to Japan, it reminds me of Yoshinoya (fast food beef bowls). It's decent Japanese Beef on Rice but with Curry as the staple option to try! Recommended if you're looking for a quick Japanese eating experience.

You can also order it with different alternatives like chicken or seafood, with curry or not. Lots to choose from in the menu. The food is pretty fast and the quantity is pretty huge. They all generally come with a salad. We've had the Gyu Curry (Egg, Beef, Curry with Rice), Gyu Don (Beef and Rice) and Oyako Don (Chicken mixed with Egg on Rice with some sauce in the rice as well). They were all pretty tasty and decent sizes!

The service was pretty good - appreciated the recording of 1 member of the table on the same paper of our manual writing of the order. They do a good job with the single serve chopsticks and spoons to maintain sanitization. Cashless payment available and very quick to cash out! Unfortunately when we went on a Saturday, the bathroom was out of order. (Tip: Closest location pending on what time would be Eaton Centre or 10 Dundas Street East food court.)

Tried the gyu cheese curry dish and the portion was quite big! Flavours were as expected for Japanese curry but I found my food to not be hot enough.

Tasty Japanese curry and katsu place near the Eaton Center. I wouldn't say it's anything too special in Toronto these days, but I remember passing by Gyugyuya in my youth and can imagine that this would have been a rarity back then. The interior is bright yellow and definitely gives me more cafeteria vibes - but fine for a casual meal.

My friend ordered the curry katsu and I ordered Gyu curry. I did really enjoy the curry, the meat portion was good and there was a ton of curry sauce hidden underneath to add flavor. I did wish that the shredded cabbage on the side had some kind of sauce as well, as it was just plain cabbage. We didn't order any other sides or beverages so my meal came out to be around $21 including tax and tip. This is definitely reasonable for Toronto but if you go somewhere like Brown Donkatsu the price would be pretty much the same with a much bigger portion. Of course, location is a factor, so it is not that big of a deal.

Overall I'd recommend.

Staff is friendly, the food was quick to arrive. It might not be 100% my curry taste but I still liked it. I got the calamari (nothing special, I felt like eating them) and gyu cheese curry.

The meat is slightly sweet like the curry, thinly sliced and an ample amount to eat with the rice (which covers the entire dish).
I wish there were pickled ginger as a palate cleanser, but it was still quite good. I believe the cheese is mozzarella (?) and it was pretty hot and stretchy even halfway through the meal. It’s not pleasant when the cheese is solidified again, but that’s because I’m a slow eater.

Overall, it was quite good and very filling; just get a main dish. I don’t think the sides are worth the price as they’re a bit higher than I’d like.

Really enjoy their curry chicken katsu and their donburi options! Super great value for price. Only downside is that the ambience of the restaurant isn't great with the yellow painted walls.

Food is OK as Beef and Rice bowl could have more sauce. But the price is reasonable. Service is outstanding.

Great little spot! Their curry is amazing.hearty and very tasty. I usually order their gyu curry and it comes out within 3 minutes, so maybe they don't cook the stuff on the spot, but it still tastes great. Have it with hot tea on the side!

This is a place I regularly come to for comfort food and have probably been at least twice a month for the past year. The food is delicious, the portions are big and filling, and the service is super kind. I basically always get the pork tonkatsudon which tastes just as great no matter how often I eat it:)

Not much meat in the katsu and the curry taste worse than those curry packs you can buy at the grocery store. I came back from Japan recently and this is definitely not authentic Japanese. That being said, the staff here are super nice and welcoming.

Been here since 2013, the curry has changed flavour a little bit since then but it is very comforting.

The servers are great and on top of things. Super friendly.

This is a nice lunch place or some quick dinner if you want a solid Japanese rice meals.

I am near by and call them to order food. They told me that they r so busy and keep silenced. I been calling them 5 times n they never speak

Classic Katsu curry and donburi offered at a reasonable price. Nothing exceptional, but nothing terrible. Service is great, storefront looks nice, everything is quite clean. The Katsu is prepared very classically, with a light layer of panko, so it's mildly crunchy, and the curry is their in house special, which offers a flavourful sauce with the Katsu and rice.

The food was delish, price was just right and the servers were very accommodating. We will definitely come back here!

Very tasty Japanese curry. Everything was very fresh and hot, servers were so nice and all of the items were very fairly priced.

The bathrooms and everything else was so clean, as soon as someone was finished or something was dirty they cleaned it right up- you don't see this very often.

Definitely coming back to this hidden gem.

The ton katsu and gyu cheese curry was very filling and delicious! The curry is on the heavier side, but still flavourful.

Most authentic Japanese curry place downtown. And it’s cheap! My first thought whenever I’m hungry near the Eaton centre is to go here!

I’ve been here like 10 times alone because it’s so easy to order and to eat and to enjoy your meal. Order comes out quick too! Great for a quick yummy bite.:)

It’s to the point I’ve stopped taking pictures of the food- that’s how often I come here.

In case anyone's curious, Gyugyuya is basically a blatant copy of a popular chain of curry shops in Japan called Go Go Curry. The curry there is also a Kanazawa style curry which is darker and thicker than normal Japanese curry. The theme/colors are identical while the menu items are very similar.
As far as taste is concerned, that's where the similarities end. I had the tonkatsu and although the rice and curry sauce is similar to Go Go (which is good), the cutlet was a little disappointing since it was quite thin and tough. Portions were also a little small but adequate.
Probably worth going once but if you're a fan of Gyugyuya and ever find yourself in Tokyo, check out Go Go Curry in either Akihabara or Shinjuku. You can thank me later!

Love this place. Came here years ago and even in 2023 they're still good. Their curries are very comforting.

I had the gyudon which was plentiful and delicious. They give miso+gyudon in the combo. My friends had katsu curry’s with with karaage and it was crispy and juicy.

Awesome Japanese curry place. I highly recommend the King Curry if you have the stomach for it. Otherwise, most of their katsu/curry options are great. I've also tried their thin sliced beef options and they are also excellent. The katsu don is okay too. My only gripe is that their prices, in my opinion, can be a little lower given the type of cuisine they serve. Still, a highly recommended place in my books.
