Halibut House Fish and Chips

We only had breakfast so far and it was very good, good portions and great prices especially if you eat breakfast between 9-11 am. The staff are friendly and attentive. The only problem I had was with the atmosphere.the last time we went the incense was overpowering and by the time we left I had a very headache. That would be enough to stop me from going but I will try it again.

The coleslaw is not the typical creamy one you get at the grocery store. This one is more vinegar flavor
Tartar sauce is homemade I believe. Very well made

Found this fish restaurant and it’s our second time here. Highly recommend the one piece Haddock fish and chip! It’s sooo delicious and lightly beer battered! The Greek salad was homemade and delicious too! Compliments to the cook! Repeat customer for sure.

Quick, friendly, and attentive service. The large serving of haddock was lightly breaded and delicately flaky. Best fish I’ve had since I left the west coast. The cheesecake was amazing too!

We were so pleasantly surprised by this place! The restaurant itself is very clean and cute. We dined in and the service was excellent. We seated ourselves and the waitress immediately brought over menus and welcome us. As for food, we ordered the calamari as well as the halibut + poutine and haddock + onion rings. Let me say the calamari was the best I've ever had - perfectly fried, not chewy at all, and paired very well with the dipping sauce (I believe the menu said it was tzatziki but it was thicker and creamy). The sides (poutine and onion rings) were great and the fish was delicious. I loved how light and not oily it was. Personally I thought the haddock was better than the halibut, but both were good overall. Will be visiting again during one of the days they offer specials!

First time trying this place. I got the breakfast poutine and have nothing good to say about it. Potatoes were soggy the hollandaise sauce was separated so I had a pool of oil at the bottom of the container & there was raw green peppers in it. Definitely wouldn’t never eat that again. Guy at the front was friendly the girl cooking who gave me my food not so much. Store and washrooms were super clean.

1 piece Halibut with side salad and sweet potato fries. So delicious! Couldn't finish.
Couldn't leave without a piece of white chocolate raspberry cheesecake for take home dessert.

Have enjoyed fish and chips but most often we go for their great breakfast special. Great service and a wonderful price. Well prepared.

Very good breakfast and server was very polite. But I will not return to Halibut House. The price for the breakfast was amazing but the coffee was way to pricey 2.95 for 1 cup of coffee outrageous. Thanks but no thanks

Followed reviews to find the best place for delish fish and chips on a Monday night. Very underwhelming atmosphere with only 2 ladies eating when we arrived. Ordered cod calamari and mushrooms with parmesan.

Everything was absolutely SODDEN IN OIL.

Ended up calling and was refunded but still aggravating because we still didn't have dinner and had to go back for our refund which I wasn't going to leave because it was pricey.

Had lunch yesterday and was so happy with the restaurant choice.
Lovely server, delicious food, large portions. Scallops were perfectly cooked. Going back again soon. Well worth the drive from downtown.

2 times here and portions were very small for the price. Ordered 2 different fishes and both were really small both times and didn't feel like it was proportional to the price. Taste was ok tho.

The best fish and chips to go to. Their fried halibut fish is my favourite. The fries are amazing.

We got the Sunday special of Haddock and chips. The batter was light and fish was good. We also ordered the chowder as a starter and it was decent! The portion for the fish was larger than expected!

We have ordered from here a few times. The fish, scallops and shrimp are good. I tried a poutine an it was so-so. The salad was also good and fresh.

I got their king cod and chips special. The cod was definitely huge and even though it was fish it was filling. The fish had a very nice, crunchy batter and the fish itself was moist. The chips (fries) were sub par, they had almost no crunch to them and definitely tasted old. The tartar sauce for the fish was a little sweet but definitely good, they also have vinegar, salt, and pepper on the table to season it as you please. Service was fast and it wasn't too busy when I came in around lunch time. Would come again, just not for the fries.

Had their Sunday-Monday special last night. 9.99 for FishnChips. Big order. Staff are fast, and give friendly service. Covid professionals. They give you buzzer you take to car, they buzz you when ready. Best Fish place in Barrhaven n Ottawa guaranteed. Love it.

Read an earlier review that said this was the best fish and chips this side of Halifax, and I must say I completely agree! As a Cape Bretoner I’m very skeptical of seafood this far inland, but I definitely recommend Halibut House! Portions are great for the price too.

Honestly the best seafood I have had in YEARS! The staff is amazing and they will cook your order as you ask. They also give you a pager to let you know when it is complete so you can wait in your car if you like

Wow! I called them tonight to order fish & chips for some folks at the long term care home I work at. The lady was so friendly on the phone and accommodated our needs. Everything was ready quickly and they really made our night with their kindness. The food was delicious, very generous portions!

We got take out yesterday (cod and halibut). The food was not hot and didn't seem fresh. The tartar sauce was very much on the sweet side. The deep fried mushrooms were interesting.

I'm disappointed because I adore fish and chips and this is the only fish and chips place in Barrhaven as far as I know. I was really hoping it would be good. But it was really not that good. I figured a place that specializes in fish and chips would knock it out of the park, but I've had far better at run of the mill family restaurants and pubs.

The place was new and clean and the staff was friendly.

I truly hope they were just having an off day.

My husband and I just had a takeout from here. Haddock & Chips, Cod & Chips, gravy, mushy peas. Absolutely delicious. The batter on the fish was perfect, light and crispy, the fish was tasty and perfectly cooked. Chips were crispy but not over done. Very good gravy and the mushy peas were surprisingly authentic. Been in Canada for 16 years (from the UK) and these are the best fish and chips we've had here. Good job we don't live very close. If you're not sure, try them, you wont be disappointed.

I enjoyed the Markham Halibut House Fish and Chips franchise so I thought I would try the one in Nepean. I was happy that I did as the Nepean store is even nicer than the Markham one. The fish and chips were the same standard, but the interior is better in Nepean. The staff were equally friendly and service was good

Well seasoned thin crispy batter on a decent size cod fillet. Fries are solid as well. Tarter sauce is to my liking (more sweet/acidic to cut through the fat of the fries/fish). Not sure what people are expecting from a fish and chip joint but the food was on point. I grew up eating fresh cod (NL x pat) and this is definitely a solid choice. Will become a regular Wednesday tradition for the fam ($10 cod and chips, big servings). We ordered ahead and a wonderfully pleasant worker greeted me and I was in and out inside 2 mins. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

I have ordered by phone from there 4 times. I go 5-10 minutes after the pickup they say just to be sure it is ready. Every time it is not ready at the time I was told on the phone. Every time I pay, include a tip, and they say it will be 5 minutes.

Every. Single. Time. Every single time I have to wait a minimum of 20 minutes, worst was 45 minutes.

They don't tell you this on the phone or in person, but they don't bother to make your order until after you arrive and pay. What is the point of calling ahead? There is no point. And they deliberately lie to customers about times when food will be ready.

I have witnessed other people there multiple times who were irate about the super long wait times which did not match what they were told on the phone or in person.

Lying to customers about wait times is not good service.

My first time was around opening. The fish was ok but the fries were too greasy. I attribute that to opening days and the cooking oil needed changing I get that. I went back a month or so later and it was amazing. 1 day last week when we could dine in I sat and had a 2 piece haddock, that was a lot of food, but is was so good I couldn't stop eating. Been a few times and still rate it one of the best options around, Service was A+, Food A+, Price A, I recommend this to Fish n Chip lovers. Really wish we could still have take out wrapped in newspaper a special smell to it:)

Kind staff, well priced food, fast service, tasty dishes only the restaurant feels a bit as a fast food joint instead of a restaurant. Highly recommended.

Tried their haddock and chips and its a big piece they serve and very fresh. However, it just felt like if it was too oily also keep in mind to eat this while fresh because thats the only way to enjoy this fish properly.

Fish is great but can’t understand why they serve some sketchy tartar sauce from a package. For a real fish place it’s a great disappointment they can’t make their own tartar sauce! Come on!

Awesome place to have FISH AND CHIPS! The staff are wonderful, the cooks are the best. By far the best fish and chips I have had! The service from the waitresses was very accommodating and pleasant. Definitely recommend eating here if in the Ottawa area. Thank you all. Made our stay very enjoyable. One satisfied customer.

The service here was awesome however the food was just average. I wouldn’t recommend the calamari, the portion for the price is not worth it as well as the seasoning. If ordering the poutine I would recommend adding extra cheese, the amount it normally comes with is not enough. I liked how they offered the cheese cake factory cheesecakes for dessert.

We ordered fish tacos, a grilled halibut with salad and a halibut fish and chips. My order came to $52 for 2. The attendant took my order then gave me a buzzer to take to my car while a wait for my order. After waiting for a while, the buzzer never buzzed so I went in and my order was sitting there ready for how long? I took it home and the fish tacos were decent but the halibut dinners were awful. There was no taste at all and the fish was hard. No coleslaw either for us. I will not go back. There is Broadways, The Mill tavern, Hearts and Crown and even the Pelican that are much better!

Two thumbs up.really good fish and chips. Modeled after a take away fish resto, you can order at a counter or have table service (or call ahead). We dined in and our server was friendly, efficient and attentive. My wife and I each ordered the halibut, hers the lunch size and my the regular (though hers was almost the same size) The food was hot, the fish was flaky the way I like it, and the fries were wonderful. I don't often eat deep fried food, but I will definitely return.

Delivery was quick and the food was still fresh. Had the calamari and two Seafood Platters. The calamari was tasty, but a little small. The Seafood Platters were tasty and absolutely enormous. The haddock was very nice, not greasy. The fries were ok, not too special but plentiful. The shrimp were quite large, but maybe a bit too much batter. The scallops were good, but might have been better not breaded.

Overall, really enjoyable, and I will be ordering again, but probably exploring other stuff on the menu. I don’t need quite that much food in a single sitting. Now I will go sleep off this food coma.
