Authentic Japanese grocery store with items imported from Japan, prepared hot/cold foods, and household items. Like the rest of J-town, it is quiet and quaint.
Today was my first time here. Loved it. There is a large variety of Japanese items many of which I couldn't find at other Asian supermarkets in the Mississauga area. However, I did find that some of the items that were available elsewhere, tended to be more expensive here. But I really liked this store. Too bad it's a long drive to get here from Mississauga.
A neat bespoke grocery store that offers many staples for cooking Japanese cuisine among other Japanese snacks and drinks. They recently relocated across the way in J Town so the layout is improved. The staff are friendly and ready to help as well.
It is a little tight so you need to slide past people when it's busy, but not a reason to skip this store!
It's always interesting to walk through this store because there aren't many Japanese markets in the area. The prices here are higher than other supermarkets, but you have to remember this is a relatively small, local store. There are home goods, grocery items, pre-packaged food, and a lot of drinks and snacks to choose from. In the corner, there is also a small dine-in so you can grab a quick bite before you start shopping.
Japanese grocery store complete with your Japanese pantry and grocery staples. Also can supply your quick lunch needs with onigiris, premade lunch bentos, croquettes and other small bites.
Great place for Japanese groceries. While a good chunk of their selection is available at bigger Asian groceries you'll get more variety here for some items, particularly snacks. And some high end Japanese products like rice and sesame oil. Keep in mind those things are priced accordingly.
They have a wide selection of prepared foods here too which are quite good and not too expensive.
Keep an eye out for the better dashi stocks. They have both the powdered stuff and premade bags of dried fish and seaweed. They even have fancier powdered versions that are flavoured like the smoked bonito flakes.
EDIT: Heisei Mart continues to be a lovely gem offering plenty of Japanese food, homeware, snacks and more. It looks like there's a food stall/restaurant that has opened up too. Clean and organized as usual.
******
Clean and organized Japanese market with mostly imported Japanese ingredients and snacks. A bit on the pricy side but you'll find a lot specialty items here. They have some prepared foods like onigiri, mochi, and Bento boxes too. Covid protocols are being followed strictly so you'll likely have to line up.
Probably the best Real Japanese market in the east at least that I know of, I always get the Japanese grown rice and high quality nori for hand wraps, there is a lot of hard to find authentic Japanese cuisine ingredients here! Love this place!
Large varieties of imported Japanese food. However, the pricing of some items are on the very expensive side. I came visit from Montreal and I was thinking the price of imported Japanese items should be cheaper here in Toronto. How I was wrong. I can get the same bag of 5kg Japan imported Yamagata Okitama Haenuki rice in Montreal @ C$29.90 per bag but they charge C$39.90 here. Amazing.
Cute Japanese market, but be aware that not all the products are actually product of Japan. I bought a few things from here that looked like it was japanses products, but they were actually products of China. Read the package carefully.
Nothing against the market itself, but, they force everyone who enters their market to wear mask even though there is no longer a government mandate on masking.
I remember the first time I visited Heisei Mart. It was around 5pm on a Friday, and there was no line at all. I walked into the store and realized it didn't look like any other electronics store I had been in before. Instead of rows of televisions and computer screens, there were only about 6 customers scattered around the whole store.
This place has so many Japanese food items that are otherwise hard to find in the city. It's really hard not to buy everything! Ranging from various Japanese snacks and candies, to actual ingredients (konbu and mitarashi dango are some things I always get because I've never seen them anywhere else), and homemade food as well. They do many bento boxes, but also have individual items like onigiri, korokke, takoyaki, omurice and salads that are great to-go meal options. The place can get pretty crowded given its small size, especially on the weekend. In my experience it's the most crowded during lunchtime when everyone eyes the bento boxes, so plan accordingly. One thing I would note is that if you have allergies it might be difficult for you to rule out ingredients as the bento boxes/homemade food often don't have an ingredients list. But packaged items have English nutritional info so you should be fine. Checkout is very fast and they package stuff perfectly! Seriously, nothing has ever leaked or broken when Heisei Mart packs my groceries:)
I have mixed feelings about this place. If someone asks me if I’d recommend the place, the answer is yes. I love that they have locally grown veggies, handmade tofu, etc. However, it's just so awkward that the staff seem to welcome Japanese customers better. The reason I say this is that, because my appearance seems Japanese to some Japanese people, whenever the staff mistakenly thought I'm Japanese, the staff would kindly greet me and asked a few questions in Japanese, and the entire shopping experience would be amazing. Other times, let's say when I was shopping with friends who probably don't look very Japanese to them, the staff would communicate very minimally and almost no basic greetings. It’s like when I said “thank you”, I’d receive no response at all. That being said I still shop at this place a lot. I write this review hoping they’ll improve on this issue.
Best place to get your variety of Japanese products. It’s usually stocked with the essentials needed to survive day to day, such as kelp, bonito flakes, miso paste (white paste was out of stock like other Asian groceries too!), tea, and ramen noodles. Their store-made ramen noodles, especially the kelp version, was amazing by the way! As I’m an admirer of food and culture from Japan, this place is perfect to make many of your favourite complex Japanese dishes from there.
A big downside to this is obviously the prices. Coming from Japan, prices are pretty high unfortunately due to import fees. So give your wallet a break after this!
New location.across the courtyard in another building, from the old one. Has more space devoted to Japanese dishes and sake bottles/cups and various chopsticks. Nice selection of Japanese food items, rice, and various items. Some items were more expensive to buy, while others were much less expensive. I do feel that the Japanese products are better quality, since a friend warned me about many other Asian countries using polluted water.better to be safe and healthy, so it's worth paying a bit extra. There's a wider variety of Japanese items, so it saves you having to go to different stores ;) Very clean store and the staff are very friendly and very helpful. Such a refreshing change from so many other stores ;)
This place was amazing. In reality, if I could, I would give it 4.5 instead of four stars. Wish they had a bigger produce section though. I will definitely be returning again.
Clean shopping center, lots of snacks to buy. The prices are a little higher but the ambience is fun to go for. Feels like you are in Japan. Workers are very friendly and keep the shelves tidy.
We made a special trip to vist this store to buy the Japanese plums and other neat items. We love this store for some Japanese items. The store is clean and staffs are very friendly and helpful.
Great little Japanese grocery store in j town. A great place to visit for a snack haul. They got imported candy, instant noodles, cookies, drinks and so much more and a pretty decent collection too. With the small isles it does get a little crowded at times.
Great selection of Japanese foods, snacks, utensils/cutlery, and general groceries. In particular, they have a decent selection of cooked foods Friday-Sunday (bento box, takoyaki, skewers), as well as natto, miso, noodles, organic fresh vegetables, and onigiri. They have lots of unique snacks (crackers, pastries, chocolates) that are classic Japanese flavours and brands and often items you aren't likely to find in a typical grocery store.
I was looking for Takoyaki ingredients and found them all. But the young lad working there was so patient and led me to where everything was located and even pointed out all the choices. Excellent service. I will definitely be going back there
Good selection of Japanese groceries. There are somethings that we cannot get at other Asian grocery stores. Staff are very nice as well. Highly recommended!
During the Covid times, should get to J Town early to avoid the line ups. Once inside I found everything I needed and the people are very friendly. Good experience!
This is what I got. This is the ultimate place for getting Japanese anything. They have dishes, cutlery, ingredients, fresh veggies (only found in Japan veggies as long with cool packs of 3 types of mushroom (enoki, shiitake, and shimeji), convinience type sweets, baked sweets from the near bakery in the market, a HUGE selection of candys, take-out sushi, bento, tea, frozen section, and MORE. The employees know their way around the mart. It is a bit small not going to lie, and there was a few things in particular is was looking for that they didn’t have. 1. They didn’t have chopsticks, well they had the 1 time use ones but not the long-term ones that you actually use on the daily 2. They did not have Glutinous rice flour, not a huge deal because they still had mochiko. Things are a bit pricy so I would suggest just making sure you are getting a good price on what you’re getting. I saw they were selling like 1 Mochi for 2.50, then I got a pack of 8 for 3.95, so such a steal. I would suggest coming here as even if it is far it is a beautiful outside atmosphere with other Japanese restaurants and bakeries!
Great market in beautiful JTown! Lots of great Japanese food. Some delicious prepared foods too. Some very nice I just wish there was regular, unflavored water.
A really small and compact Japanese-ran novelty Japanese grocer. Comparing to other Asian Marta, it's definitely more on the pricey side, with the same items usually selling for $1 or 2 above other grocers that carry them. However, you can find very authentic Japanese imports here, also items that you might not be able to find anywhere else. For that, I think it was worth my visit! I was able to purchase buckwheat soba that's 90% buckwheat here!
Staffs are friendly and helpful, they definitely carry that Japanese politeness right here! Other than the steeper price tags, I really enjoyed coming here, and will return for more Japanese grocery soon!
The mart moved across the walkway to the building parellel. The layout is just as squeezed, if not more so as before so it can get crowded fairly easily.
Glad they are open again so I can get my fix of hard to find things.
New store is nice! It's still fairly small, but the staff are really friendly, and helpful when you can't find something and your Japanese pronunciation is a bit off. I'll be a frequent shopper from now on.
Excellent store with Japanese treats. Like everyone they're having a tough time because of the pandemic but we want them to continue and thrive. They stock many Japanese products not available at other Asian grocers in the GTA.
