Had tsukemen. Soup was not hot enough, the cha shu is not fresh enough and the same taste is reflected in the soup. Service was okay though and the servers tried their very best to warn us about sesame allergy
I had Santouka in Boston before, which was really good, as such I had high hope but this time it is simply disappointing.
Chasiu pork have a fishy smell and is not soft enough, soup is watery, the noodles have a strong alkaline, repugnant taste. For this price point such quality is unacceptable.
While I understand English is not everyone's native language one should have sufficient proficiency, which is unfortunately not the case for this location.
Ramen was amazing with rich pork broth. The cha shu rice was flavourful but less sauce. We also got a pork jowl appetizer which was so tender and juicy. The only complaint is bowls are a little small but flavours are there.
What makes this place better than any other ramen place in town is a delicious concentrated broth. Can't really say about other things, the portion (medium bowl) seemed a bit smaller than it's usually at other places with the same price tags.
Got the regular miso ramen. It was smaller than expected but it was pretty decent. The taste was rich. It was a decent temperature (ie.not scalding hot, but not cool either). There could be more meat though.
I have enjoyed this global chain elsewhere before Toronto. I'd say the quality in Toronto is still really good. The broth was both rich and flavorful, I do enjoy my chashu being on the fatty side.
The tables are really close by so it can feel a little squishy and you do have to wait for your whole party to arrive before they seat you.
Horrible service! I used to love this place but no more! I AM FULLY VACCINATED AND THEY DON’T LET ME IN THE RESTAURANT EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE PROOF OF VACCINE AND PASSPORT IN PDF file On my phone. It doesn’t make any sense to me that they’re accepting DIGITAL version of Vax proof but not the ID! I have had waited outside close to 1 HOUR in the cold and the rude staff turned me away just because I didn’t bring the PHYSICAL ID. NEVER COME BACK TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. Terrible customer service. No sense of sympathy and consideration at all! 0 star would be generous for this place.
Still one of the best bowls in the city but dining in is insane now. They are doing delivery and take out, and have half the tables as usual (restaurants are allowed full capacity) while 30 people line up for more than an hour in winter weather. This has to change.
Minus the huge waiting line, the food here is good. I wonder why they don’t take reservations instead of making people wait in the cold for good 30-45 mins. Probably a marketing strategy. Good ramen and friendly staff. Weird that the Ramen didn’t come with eggs.
What is this restaurant that has fallen down from the heavens? ! I have been going to Hokkaido Ramen Santouka for years and with years and years of great ramen and great customer service I've finally decided to write a review This is my family's all time favourite ramen place. Every time we go, the ramen is stunningly delicious and the service is great. Due to covid we haven't been able to go in person but we still order online from skip the dishes. Of course there is no way to compete with sitting there in person where you can watch the chefs make their stunning broth, but it comes pretty close to it. Yes the experience is not as great, but the food is still delicious. My family and I highly recommend you try the shio broth, its so creamy and rich. Its not spicy or greasy. But if you do want something spicy, you want to order something else. Its mild, but still delicious.
The wait is long but is it worth it? Came here during a cold rainy evening thought it would be quick with only 4 groups in front of us, waited 45mins. It seems this place take their time to seat their customers as while we were waiting, 2 empty 2 person tables was left empty for 15mins. Are they trying to create a line? Who knows. Ramen was good and beer was cold. But there are other places serve ramen as good. My experience was food 4.5 star and service 1 star.
Loved the noodles, amazing texture. The pork was tender and tasty. The corn was sweet and crunchy, the wood-ear mushrooms were perfect. But we didn’t like the broth, and since that’s one of the two key ingredients in ramen it’s hard to get past that. The broth had a pronounced flavour of “seafood”; perhaps they just use more kelp and bonito than other spots. It was leas pronounced in the spicy miso, and more obvious in the shoyu. While it wasn’t to our taste, other people might love it. Unfortunately we won’t be repeating.
Went here for first time and very much liked this place. Best friend told me about it and we went there with him on Saturday afternoon. Service was very good and staff was polite and the food was quite tasty. Just note that the bathrooms are located in the basement with a low ceiling and if you're rather tall, you'll need to stoop down a bit. I'm only 5'7" and if I was to stand on my tiptoes I could probably press the top of my head to the ceiling.
1. The ramen is bad. Not much different than ibstant nokdle and surely not what I had in Japan for uears. 2. Bad employee service. Gives so sincererity at all when answerinv questions 3. I need my receipt and they dont share it with me
This was my third time eating at a Hokkaido Santouka Ramen and my first time in Toronto. One of the best Ramen I have ever had! I ordered the Miso Ramen and my husband the Ship Ramen, what a dream in form of food! The broth was rich and delicious, the noodles were perfect and the staff is so nice and professional! We'll definitely come back and bring family and friends!
Excellent broth, lovely ramen noodles and delicious egg! This is one of the better ramen I've had in Toronto. Really great that it's possible to reduce the salt or lard amounts in the dish. Overall, an excellent place for a winter night meal. Price is little on the higher side but well worth the quality.
My favourite ramen place in Toronto! Their food is always so delicious. I recommend the shio ramen for anyone unsure what to order. Prices are decent and I love bringing friends here to eat, they all enjoy it.
I will stand in their infamous long line outside for an hour just to eat here. That being said, avoid coming here at peak lunch time unless you’re okay with standing in line to get a seat. Best time to arrive is around 2 or 3pm.
Just got take out. Been meaning to go for a while. Food was very good, the take out was set up very well, separated and mixed at home. Also, the staff was very, very helpful. Not very cheap, but what is downtown?
Food is always hot and delicious. Well worth the price you pay. As soon as the open, there is a line up to get in, but so worth the wait. The staff is very friendly and helpful - though it's always busy, they do not rush and allow you to savour the food.
I have been coming here for five years and this restaurant is so consistently amazing. This is probably my favourite restaurant in Canada because the quality is better than some of the ramen I had in Tokyo. This restaurant is probably the restaurant that got me into ramen. The staff are so kind, and they have vegan options now
Definitely one of the best ramen spots downtown. Flavourful broth that isn’t too salty. One star docked just for pricing - the portions are smaller than other ramens restaurants.
Come after 3pm or so if you want to avoid long lines, the food was great and staff were kind. I really like that you can get a bigger or smaller portion of ramen as sometimes you're stuck with one size at other places. Shoyu ramen was very flavourful and I drank all the broth too:) Takoyaki was fresh and possibly the best I've had. Melon cream soda was great too!
Don't know if you have tried Tsukemen before. You dip the cold noodles in a separate bowl of soup before eating it. Perfect for summer ️ time! Remember to ask for extra broth after to add to the soup to taste or even drink the whole bowl of soup.
Decided this afternoon to put aside the electric unicycle and just walk downtown abit. Hokkaido ramen Santouka was on my route and i dropped by to order the cha-shu kara-miso ramen, large size. After picking up my order, i walked over to the public gathering area of ryerson university to sit and eat my afternoon snack. What struck me was the packaging of the takeout. The ramen noodles, cha-shu, and accompanying vegetables were all very neatly packed into 1 double walled/stacked cardboard bowl. And to top it off, the cook/chef arranged all the meat and vegetables in a very well ordered fashion, atop my large order of ramen noodles. It was so well arranged and packaged, i thought there was not enough to eat. Well, my assumption was completely wrong.there was ALOT of ramen noodles and kara-miso broth! Aside from the food, eating utensils and napkins, there is one extra item that i think should be mentioned. Included with my takeout order is a small page containing eating and reheating instructions: who does that? I mean, WHO CARES ENOUGH TO INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT YOUR TAKEOUT FOOD? I send out a big thankyou to this dundas st.location of Hokkaido Ramen Santouka for adding that nice xtra touch to their takeout packaging. This is the only ramen restaurant i have seen so far that adds instructions to their takeout food packaging.
As for the ramen, it was piping hot, and not overcooked. The cha-shu is fine, and the broth just had a hint of heat, very mild. I would add a dash of chili paste next time to kick the heat up abit.
For sure i will be returning to try their green chili Tsuke-Men! This dundas location is a return destination for me!
Very spicy noodle. It has all the basic japanese ramen noodle selections. I am just thinking that it is just another downtown noodle place but no it is not! It has a wow factor that is waiting for you to discover!
I just had takeout here last week and it was really nice. The broth was rich and flavourful, and I’ll definitely come back. I didn’t get to eat until an hour after pick up because of my long drive, but because of the way they pack the takeout containers, the food was still hot. I was worried that it would be cold and even worse - soggy, but the takeout containers here have two sections to keep the broth and noodles etc separate, so it was actually still perfect by the time I was able to eat. From the time of ordering to getting the food was around 5 minutes, so it’s a great place if you need quick service.
Amazing ramen, probably my favourite in Toronto as somebody who used to live in Japan! Their take out packaging is fantastic too now that we're all ordering take out during the pandemic.
As it was for take out. I ordered regular ramen, but it being placed separately between soup and the noodles.nice packaging. Feels like eating a tsuke-men with lower price.
I would like to say I've been to every notable ramen spot in Toronto, and I have long considered Santouka one of the best. Location is small and tight so expect a decent wait, but once inside, you'll be greeted by excellent, friendly service, warm vibrant atmosphere, and great food. I always order the shoyu or kara miso, but Id say everything on the menu is good. The rice bowl side dishes are also very tasty and well priced.
P. S: best marinated egg in town (aji-tama). Make sure you add it to your order, its unreal.
Everytime I go there its always awesome, been there like 4 or 5 times and always enjoy the food there.shio ramen is my favorite and this place also my favorite place to eat ramen.love it!
Love this restaurant! The ramen was so delicious and service was quick and friendly. I was really hungry so I got the large size bowl, I managed to finish, but I think the small size would have been enough.
Unfortunately, the customer service here leaves little to be desired, which is the main reason for the two stars. A friend joined a little later, and the waitress insisted that she sit alone at a different table from our group, two tables away. Some kind people next to us offered to move over so that we could all sit together, but this was at the inconvenience of two sets of customers, which we felt badly for.
Some in our group wanted to order a small appetizer, but they were told that there was a minimum order of $9-ish, and if they weren't ordering anything, they had to leave. I understand that restaurants have policies, but this place was overall a frustrating experience.
Food wise, it was average. The meat was tender and flavourful. The seasoned egg was a little overcooked for my liking - the egg yolk was not runny at all. The broth was delicious and creamy. The noodles however, were lacklustre.
While the food wasn't bad, I don't think I'll come back simply due to how they treated my friends. I hope they improve on their customer service; it really is a shame.
Mind blowing ramen experience. I've been to a number of reputed ramen joints in Toronto, - Isshin, Sansotei, Kinton - and this one is decisively my favorite. The richness and complexity of the broth is what makes it stand out. Once in the door, service is fast and very friendly. Prices are extremely reasonable, given the quality of the food (although I find that is usually the case with Toronto quality ramen restaurants). Well worth the frequent 30 minute wait out the door.
Anyone with an inside into the Japanese diaspora in Toronto would come across the name “Hokkaido Ramen Santouka“ as one of the best places in Toronto to eat Japanese ramen. Culture vultures will notice a distinctive but settle Japanese touch in everything, from the way you are greeted at the entrance, to the stylish interior design, to the meticulous arrangement and presentation of meals once served, to the open kitchen style that lets you appreciate and observe Japanese chefs as they prepare each meal. The Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is a rare gem in the city of Toronto, and one of the rare restaurants where one can truly enjoy an authentic Japanese dining experience.
Excellent Ramen. I went there once and it gave me the best first impression. Item number 8 was delicious and spicy. I would recommend it if you visit. The staff was exceptional and the waiting times were fair. If you go on a late Sunday expect a 15 to 20 minute waiting line. However the food will make your time worth it. One downside is that they do not offer vegan options. My girlfriend had to order the salad Ramen with shrimp. It was pretty good but it was not vegan.
Not very authentic, or maybe I am not suit to Hokkaido noodles, tast is so simple and noodles is not enough to eat. The only one that worth to try is tsukemen.
One of the top considerations when visiting Toronto. It's a small location and busy but they turn tables quite fast. Try the Toroniku Ramen with extra lard. One downfall is that they won't let you have broth without the ramen; my girlfriend is gluten free but we still come here because it's that tasty.
If you're coming here with a group on Friday at about 7pm expect it to be very busy! We didn't mind the wait because it is to be expected for the amazing experience you get. We ordered the Kara Miso Cha-shu Ramen and it was sooo good. I normally can't handle spice but it was just right.
I love coming here when I'm around eaton centre. There's always a lineup but it doesn't take too long to get a seat.
This is the top 3 ramen places I actually like. The noodles is just the right texture and the broth is savoury. Not the type of broth that's extremely salty.
Amazing ramen, a true taste of Japan! The pork was beautifully flavoured. To say it was melting feels like an understatement. The noodles were delicious and the broth a delight.
This ramen place okay. Food is nice. But mediocre service. All parties need to be there for seating and a minimum order of $10 pp. Once you are seated you cannot move seats. These rules are sort of annoying esp because when I got there the restuarant was 60% empty.
Had great ramen here, everything was perfect! A bit bigger in size than most established ramen places in Toronto but for variety eaters it might seem packed. I'm not big on pork but it was one of the best I've ever had, so soft and flavorful!
Long wait during lunch hours but definitely worth it if you are looking for an authentic ramen experience. The menu features various classic Japanese Ramen styles like Shio, Shoyu, Miso and Kara Miso. The broth is a rich, creamy and balanced tonkotsu, very delicious. Noodles cooked to perfection and flavorful, tender pork. What is particularly interesting is that they also do Tsukemen Ramen. Overall, it is a little pricey if you order extra toppings, but it is worth it for the quality of the food and the service.
