I adopted my cat here last December! Their form was straightforward to fill out and they give you well-suited options for the right animal that'll fit into your lifestyle and experience with animals. They got back to me within the week I believe and we had a short interview over the phone. I applied to quite a few shelters in the beginning so believe me when I say I prefer Durham Humane Society's process a lot better! We met our shy girl Sarafina (at the time) and she immediately warmed up to us. There was a second brief interview in person and the staff was very kind and helpful. The price was very fair and they were very helpful when I called for advice later on as well! She was spayed and all her shots were updated. Now she goes by Emma (but we all call her meow meow) and she's a wonderful addition to the household! No behavioural issues and is such a sweet little lady!

If you're looking to be a cat or dog owner, I absolutely recommend adopting an animal from the humane society as opposed to shopping from breeders. There are so many amazing animals from all different age ranges in need of a home. I decided I was ready to adopt a cat of my own, so I sent in an application HSDR with an interest in one of their male cats. They got back to me within an hour or 2 and let me know that cat was being adopted but they had an adorable female kitten in need of a home. We did a pre-screening interview and then we got to come in and meet her (they also accommodated our schedules as best as they could which was awesome) they asked us a bunch of questions to make sure we were prepared for what we were getting into and that we were the right fit for that kitten and then let us have some time with her. We were approved and they made sure they covered everything from food to vaccines. We also had to sign a waiver stating we wouldn't declaw our cat which I appreciated. The adoption fee was much less than what I was prepared to pay as well. Overall, it was a fantastic experience with the humane society and we now have the most amazing and loveable fur child of or own!

You're website is awful. I'm trying to adopt a dog from a shelter near me and your website does not have a clear list of the dogs you currently have. And you can't come in to see it's by appointment only. As a result I definitely won't be adopting from this shelter.

Had a great experience adopting my cat Talulah! The staff were informative and kind and let me spend a great deal of time with the cat before deciding whether or not to bring her home. They packed me up with food and meds with explanations about everything. Great after adoption support too!

Beautiful place to adopt an animal. The animals are well taken care of. Very reasonable rates, considering they have all their shots, spayed/neutered and micro chipped. I just adopted a lovely cat.

The humane society is absolutely wonderful! I saw my little Sierra online and put in an application, the next day they called me back! I set an appointment to meet her in the next 2 days, that same day of the meet and greet we took her home! The staff is amazing, friendly and so kind. They answered all our questions and gave us time to as bond with Sierra. We are so happy to have our little Sierra join our family! We love her so much. The transition has been so smooth. Thank You HSDR, you take incredible care of the animals! I highly recommend HSDR to everyone! Keep up the incredible work.

Amazing, friendly staff! Keeping areas for the animals were all clean and had a decent amount of space:) I went with my friend to retrieve her car, during the process I was able to interact with other kitties and animals. The staff provided a carrier and updated paperwork, shots and information on the situation. They also provided food due to a new health condition with no extra cost. Kudos - this is one of the 'nicer/cleanest' humane society locations I have been to.

We were searching for our furever friend after losing our boy, Louie. I was so impressed with the process of adopting as well as the knowledge and professionalism of the staff. We are happy to introduce you to Fred!

The adoption process was easy and fast. We got our car ChaCha who is the light of our lives. She makes us so happy with all her silliness. Making a difference in an animal who needs it through adoption, had been one of the best decisions our family has made. She has found her forever home with us.

I had a great adoption experience with a 3 year old male cat. They allowed me to interact with the animals to see which one was most suitable for my home. All communication was prompt and helpful.

Each staff member was incredibly kind, helpful and full of knowledge. My family and I were looking for some time to adopt another cat and when we saw the most adorable kitten on HSDR website and filled a form, they contacted us right away. During the adoption stage, they were more than happy to talk to us on the phone about our soon-to-be kitty and provided great advice. On adoption day they provided for free, food (dry AND wet) for our kitten, as they wanted her to go home with what she was eating initially, as well as a lot of great information sheets and some free toys. The experience was unparalled - I greatly recommend adopting through HSDR.

My mother and I have fostered pets with HSDR for a couple years now (puppies, bunnies, guinea pigs) and we absolutely love the staff and the environment there! A couple weeks ago I decided to adopt a hamster! The process was very smooth and did not take much time at all! They provided me with a hamster tank and carrier upon leaving (since i forgot to bring.a carrier myself!) and a check list of the items I needed for the little dude! If you are looking to adopt or foster i would highly recommend doing it through the HSDR! They are excellent with communicating and are committed to finding their animals a forever home that is best suited for everyone:)

I recently adopted an adult cat (Mary Ann) from the Humane Society of Durham Region this past weekend. From the process of the application to the interview phone call and communication in-between was all a great experience.

The phone call interview was thorough and very informative, explaining Mary Ann's personality and what she had been through before and during her time at the shelter, which was great to know prior to meeting her. You could tell the staff really cared about her well-being as well as the other animals in their care.

I loved knowing she was very thoroughly examined and cared for before bringing her home as I know these can be very costly expenses. The adoption cost is extremely fair given how much money is spent with veterinary care making sure they're as healthy as they can be prior to adoption.

If you plan on letting your cat be an outdoor cat or declawing it, you shouldn't be owning a cat in the first place. If not, you'll also have a great experience here as well.

Mary Ann is truly a special cat and she's been a very welcome addition to our household. We couldn't be happier with our choice in shelter or cat. Thanks Elizabeth!:)

I recently applied to adopt an older cat (because they often get overlooked) and we were very rudely rejected. I have had cats since I was born and have cared for them lovingly. They didn’t approve me because in the past I had to give up 2 of my cats TO FRIENDS OF MINE because I was moving and my new condo building wouldn’t allow it. And from other review I have read, it doesn’t seem like the humane society has the animals well being in best interest or want them to be adopted. Hmmmm… I wonder what they are doing to them. A family member of mine used to volunteer there, they said that there are a lot of bad things that happen behind the scenes that nobody knows about. I feel sorry for the animals there. You must have to be the Pope to adopt an animal here. Oh wait, maybe not… he has a balcony.

Had a wonderful experience adopting my rabbit from here. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly and adopting was smooth and easy. Rescuing is a great choice. Your animal comes fixed and with tons of information for first time pet owners.

The HSDR was absolutely incredible from the very first day we decided to adopt our boy, Finnegan (or Violet, while he was at the shelter!). We were given all the information we needed and went through an interview process to ensure we could give him the safest and happiest life possible, and once we were approved, we picked him up a few days later. We were given a care package with some Royal Canin food, and were told that if we had any questions or required any assistance to simply reach out. We left with a beautiful boy, feeling confident and comfortable. Needless to say, he is amazing. He came from a foster family who must have socialized him well and treated him like gold, as from the very first day he was brave, confident, and unbelievably affectionate. As you can see, he's settling in nicely. Thank you HSDR for all of the amazing work that you do!

Bad people, trying to do good things. Not a good place to find an animal unless you want to be judged by the staff
