This was awesome…. The people there were very friendly and helpful. The artifacts and stories that are posted were very informative…I highly recommend visiting this place. Two thumbs up!
My family explores the gaol earlier today. It could have been better with real your guides (rather than devices you hold up to your ear-of which they didn't have enough) but the facility is well done and admission is reasonably priced. They told me it's always busy on rainy days, so if you want to avoid crowds, go on days with nice weather.
Excellent museum about the judicial system in Colonial Upper Canada for Hiron County. Robert Turscott was held here, being the youngest Canadian to be sentenced to hang which was not carried out.
The most well looked after and informative historical location. We were able to go into almost every room. There were audio tour personal devices at no extra charge. It was under $20 for 2 adults and we were there for most of the afternoon!
Cool jail to check it out! Spent about an hour there. There was way more stuff to look, read, and listen than I thought. $ is totally worth it. If you're visiting goderich check it out
It's been 13years + since I've been there and last weekend I went back with my family and it was exactly like I remember. Everything is wonderfully preserved and clean. Decent price to get in and was about an hour walk through, self guided tour. We had a lot of fun and the kids loved Learning the facts about the inmates and all the artifacts. We will be back next time we're in Goderich!
A good and honest snap shot of the time that the gaol operated, with a focus on the early 20th century. You could walk through quickly or take your time at every station and that may take a couple hours. The history minded my want to visit more then once. The Goal is a good example of how the legal system has changed, how we treat criminals, the mentality ill, and women (some things anew shocking). Lots of effort is put into this site.
Well preserved site preserving our less enlightened past. Although it was considered progressive for its time (prisoners were allowed exercise yards; the latest "panopticon" theories were put into practice) to modern eyes the conditions, and the reasons for incarceration, were quite barbaric. The most startling fact is that it was used right up until the 1970s!
The guide was very friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Easily worth the admission. Free parking out front.
The Gaol (which was still operating in the 1970s!) is a well preserved example from the dawning of Canada. With restorations ongoing, the Guided Tour is informative and fun.
Visited the gaol on a rainy day. Excellent tour guide - very knowledgeable! Covid protocols in place - we called the day before to book a time slot. Great activity for kids and adults! Can't wait to dive into the newly published book as well!
We took my son, 7 years old, and my niece, 4 years old, for a visit here. They loved walking around the old cells, and seeing the other areas of the gaol. I really enjoyed the information presented in the displays. I learned quite a lot.
Great experience. A very DIFFERENT kind of museum! Loved using the audio tour guide system. I liked that we could do it independantly and not worry about missing things.
It does get quite hot and stuff on the third floor, but I appreciated the desk attendant's advice to start up there and come down, because I wouldn't have wanted to go up instead of down.
Had a great evening at the gaol. Local actor s in period costumes did a wonderful job of staying 'in role' while imparting interesting history and details of life in previous times.
Came on Historic Places day, so it was a little busy. Spent ages going through every room, I absolutely loved how they let you in the jail cells with the old beds and other knick-knacks. It’s very authentic feeling. Then once you’ve seen the jail, you have the added bonus of touring the Governors house! A really great experience here.
Talk about stepping into the past of crime and punishment. Building is definitely a treasure. Is you are in the area, definitely stop and see it. Lots of history and stories to read about. Recommended.
I love history and the audio tour was great, especially love you can go through at your own place and actually enter rooms not everything is corded off like some museums.
Great place. Very impressive. Staff is absolutely super and extremely knowledgeable. Worth going back twice Really enjoyed the history. Its something everyone should know about. Opens up your eyes and mind.
Very good. I had to keep running after my husband though who thought some of the information was boring on the electronic recordings. Need better locks on the bathroom doors. Not sure why the person didn"t lock the door by the slide bolt. Didn't see it probably and thought the door handle locked the door. Still better me opening the door than some child. Happy to see you sold keychains. How about some postcards too?
It's an interesting place. Gives an idea of the past. We make it a place to visit to support the local community. Usually get a break if you also do the museum.
We did the escape room. It was a lot of fun. It has a nice suffregette theme, and there was an actor in prison with us, which helped the theme come through.
The puzzles were all good, without much ambiguity about what bits go together. And the actor is there to provide clues if we got such on something too long.
