This is an old fashioned fish n chips place that still serves excellent fresh fish in big portions. Great cole slaw too. My only complaint is they give too many of their delicious chips in a single portion. You can definitely make two meals from a 2 piece fish n chips order.
Walked into the place with a few of my friends for takeout. Ended up deciding to stay as we wanted to eat the food hot. Asked the waitress kindly for a simple fork to eat the fish and chips - rudely, she refuses as we didn’t do actual sit down seating. Never have encountered this before as I was just requesting for a simple plastic fork. Food was decent, service was horrible.
Our order arrived 25 minutes late and it had, obviously, been out for delivery for at least that long. Everything was cold and the chips were inedible. We tried to warm everything up in the oven but to no avail. We will not be ordering from them again!
I know the food here is really good but on Good Friday it was really busy and we would have had to wait 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get the food so because I can't stand that long I had to leave. So I really can't rate the food, atmosphere and service. Was looking forward to having it.
If you like your Halibut, Jeff Purveys is the only place to get it. Their scallops are the best in town. And if you're into nostalgia, dining in transports you to the docks of 200 or so years ago. A very clean and dining room appropriate version of the docks. Lol. The only place I get my fish n chips.
Ordered the halibut. It was firm and rubbery. Couldn’t eat it. My dog doesn’t even care for it. I really wanted to love it because it looked fantastic. 2 stars because the fries were good and it was delivered hot.
The best Fish & Chips, the pieces of fish are huge, my husband and I order the take out special 4 fish, 4 chips, and 2 coleslaw, this is 2 supers for us.
Sat down for 15 minutes and didn't get any service, the 2 cashiers seen me come in. Not coming back, idc if its the best fish and chips. Also in the parking lot seen a rat run into the basement window.
Friendly Staff and great history of its beginnings but, probably one of the worse fish and fish places I’ve been to in recent years. Fish was very oily and fries were dry when biting into them. This isn’t a big deal but other local places, for the same price, include a coke slaw which wasn’t offered. Overall-Not enjoyable and not good value for the price
Picked up dinner for takeout. I particularly like the Once Around the Kitchen and my husband enjoys the halibut. Lots of really good food.enough that I can easily share my chips so hubby only gets a single piece of fish and some of my chips. Always excellent!
We went to this restaurant for an exploration and to support local independent businesses. The food and service were decent, but the battered fish was too dry. However the onion rings were surprisingly good.
Loved it! Reasonably priced. Good quantity and tasty. We went there reading the good reviews for this place and were not disappointed. The people who served us were polite, attentive and friendly. If you are in the area and want to have good fish and chips…try this one.
We love Ken, he runs a great establishment here in Peterborough. We favour their Caesar salad, it does not have real bacon and a tasty dressing! They also give a large amount of deep fried pickles for the price compared to other restaurants in town.
A wonderful local Fish & Chips place that was recently brought to my attention! It has become a favorite and a pleasure to see all the workers as they always have a fantastic attitude. Lots of fish options for anyone and can make anyone happy. Can't wait to go back!
It's actually not a bad shop at all. If any complaints the area is not the greatest. Loved my chicken strips and poutine even the it used just mozzarella but a lot of places do that and it's a decent replacement from cheese curds.
I love this place for quality fish and chips! They're always fresh and the meals remind me of genuine British fish and chips! The portions are very generous and the prices are hard to beat. I highly recommend a visit.
Ordered thru skip 2 pieces of halibut & chips they were great nice size pieces. ️ gravy, coleslaw, macaroni and potato salad. Only thing that i didnt like was the macaroni it was quite bland. Other than that it was delivered on a timely manner it was still hot when i got it. Great value great taste! Well done!
Due to Covid-19 our home see’s more delivery’s then usual. We order Jeff purvey’s and it was delivered fast and super hot. Always amazing and will enjoy it again. Peterborough original fast food/restaurant. Give it a try!
Best fish & chips anywhere.had the halibut and the portion was huge, much bigger and tastier than anywhere I've been. We had a special place in orillia called bounty and thought it was untopable.well this place typed it indeed. Great price, delicious food and the people that work there were very warm and friendly. Loved it and would highly recommend it.
STOPPED BY HERE ON THE WAY HOME FROM A WEEKEND OUT IN LAKEFIELD. WE GRABBED A HALIBUT N CHIPS (2/5), A PICKEREL N CHIPS (5/5), AND A SIDE ORDER OF ONION RINGS (4/5). THE BATTER ON EVERYTHING WAS NICE AND CRISPY, BUT OVERALL, EVERYTHING NEEDS A JUST A PINCH OF SALT, EVEN THE FRIES. THEY WERE SLIGHTLY SOGGY BUT STILL HOT AND FRESH. HALIBUT IS TYPICALLY A SLIGHTLY DRYER FISH BUT THE PIECE I GOT WAS INSANELY DRY AND HARD. IT HAD A BITE/CHEW TO IT WHICH WAS A TAD UNPLEASANT. THE PICKEREL WAS AMAZING! I RECOMMEND THIS ONE! NOT A LOT OF PLACES EVEN OFFER PICKEREL AT ALL! IF YOURE IN THE TOWN OF PETERBOROUGH, MAKE A STOP HERE AND GET SOME FRIED PICKEREL N CHIPS!
While the food is good, I'm sure, as it always has been.there's a few BIG problems: First and foremost.the cleanliness of the dining room, or lack thereof, gives me great pause as to what the cleanliness of the kitchen would be. I did note staff batter dipping fish with bare hands. Should gloves be in use? I took a few photos in the dining room.judge for yourself. I visited the place several times 40 years ago as a child, and I don't know that the place has been cleaned much since, tbh. It certainly has been redecorated at all.
Today was Good Friday. Yes, a VERY busy day for restaurants, and particularly so for Purvey's for a few reasons including fish being a traditional meal for the day. However, with 20 Skip The Dishes/Uber/Door Dash drivers lined up out one door, and about 60 customers lined up inside, out the door and down the street.things quickly got out of control. While they continued to take MORE orders they had lost all control of the orders/customers they already had. Deliver drivers who had waited 30 - 60+ minutes were just walking out.orders were being put up/called for drivers who had already left. One Skip The Dishes customer drove down LOOKING FOR her delivery driver, and God love her she said to the driver you leave and go back to work and I'll stay here and wait in line for my "delivery" order. Well before it reached this point the restaurant should have called a pause on all new orders.
My family went to Jeff's last week and everybody but me ordered fish and chips. I had once around the kitchen and was not disappointed. Our experence at the place I grew up going to as I was raised 4 blocks from the place. My day worked at the G. E.and every Fri.he would bring home enough F&C to feed the 5 kids and mom and himself.
I mean been here many times, dirt review. So good! Only been to the Rubidge location but assume they are the same. Unless your really hungry, one piece should do. But I have killed the two piece and rolled down the street! Fries are awesome!
Very nice people, amazing food and quality. I think its family run. This is by far the best fish and chips in ptbo. There always on time for pick up orders, and super friendly.
I am incredibly disappointed in not only the food, but the customer service here. We ordered family meals as an early celebration of my birthday, and found hair baked into the batter of the fish. When we called, they basically said prove it, and we had to bring it back in to the restaurant. An employee, Male, was incredibly rude, stated this never happens, and then proceeded to hand us 4 pieces of fish, and tell us to carry on. I am not a complainer at all, and I generally have no issues with food I order, but tonight was a disappointment all around.
Jeff Purvey's hasn't changed in the fifty years I've been going there. The menu still has all my favourites. All the rest is pretty much the same. Maybe a fresh coat of paint as needed. I'm glad as owners have changed, they saw no need to "improve" anything.
First time in I waited more than half an hour for a large box of fries. The food is really good and greasy. The place could use some TLC and new menu boards. Last fries I ordered were made with dirty potatoes; thus dirt in my mouth.
Ordered here in the past every once in a while and was alot better than recently. The fries were under cooked and soggy usually they are not soggy. And the shrimp batter was like mush. Unfortunatly next time gonna have to try big bens or whatever its called.
Best fish and chips ever. Poutine is to die for and salads are huge and always fresh. We highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. Been going there for years and always treated like family. *****
Had the light batter and it was just the right amount. Not greasy, and the sides of potato salad and coleslaw we're very fresh well-presented. II opted not to have french fries but my friend did and they were lovely not greasy nice and fresh. Enjoy your experience there.they do take out
