Hamburger patty is consistency of pate, no flavour, flavour is all from condiments.fries were fried in a rancid oil, probably the oil needed to be changed but wasn’t, we had to throw the fries out.
One of the best late night Burger in North York area. Meat are all cook to order and it is absolutely taste fresh. I usually go for the Chessy Burger with double patty. It really got more meat than McDonald double 1/4lb thing
One down size is they are cash only and not available online to order.
I used to eat here after every friday night hockey game **35 years ago**. I went back, after 35 years and nothing has changed, just the staff. It is still the greatest value for your $ A throw back to the glorious magic of the 1980's.
I've been eating at Johnny's since I was a kid in the 70's and I was so disappointed to see the recent changes to the food at the restaurant. Burgers are obviously smaller and more cheaply made.
Although the price is still low, the burgers and even the fries have been substituted for cheaper, less tasty fast food.
Despite Johnny's having immense sentimental value to many from my generation, I will have to take a pass and look for another reasonably priced late night alternative.
The younger generation that have taken over the business have certainly made poor choices when it comes to the quality of the food they are offering.
Small space, burgers don't taste fresh, but cost is good. The lineup system sucks. I also ordered their souvlaki, which was tasty but underwhelming. I couldn't get past the smell of fried bacon oil.no lie that's what the onion rings smelt like.
If you want the best souvlaki on the cheap.go to square boy on the danforth.
Since I found this restaurant and had a burger years ago, can't stop eating there. It is juicy and fresh, and one hamburger is enough for me with a coffee (timhortons). Sometimes waiting time is long and no waiting seats provided. Overall love it's hamburgers. Thanks.
Excellent and huge burgers. Always buy banquet ones, with either fries or onion rings and a shake. Customers line up and take numbers, so busy it is.
No hart burn after eating their burgers, you feel satisfied and happy, that you had their meals. They diversified the menu too.
Went again recently, in the pandemic. Had a burger and diet coke, cost me $6.00 taxes included. Shop runs a lunch special Monday to Friday, from 11AM to 3 PM.
You can get a burger, fries and pop drink of your choice during that time, for $7.60, taxes included. I will definitely go back another time, no fuss with getting my food and drink promptly served.
I had enjoyed my burger which is huge, by the way and I strongly recommend it.
Each and every time I "pop" in, there is good, cheap food which is served by friendly staff. I really like this place and am strongly recommending it! 5*+ all the way!
I heard about this place from friends about 25 years ago, never got a chance to stop by until recently.
My understanding was that this was a family owned and operated business with hand pressed burgers and hand cut fries.
It sounds like something may have changed over the years as it doesn't look like it's being operated by the original owners, in addition the burgers and fries are frozen. I would say this is like Harvey's, was a little disappointed given how this place use to be praised years ago.
Cheeseburger, Nicely toasted bun, fresh onions, topped with nice properly ripped tomatoes, but they pickles have too much vinegar, nice patty, good sandwich for the price.
Burger was very plain and basic. Fries were unsalted and tasted like nothing. Honestly this place is overrated. People giving it 5 stars usually grew up nearby and like it for nostalgic reasons.
Good service. Fantastic tasting burgers. If you are looking for good taste, a juicy burger that is broiled just right, garnished with sauteed onions, plus the other fixings, this is the place to go.
This place is amazing! The poutine is amazing! The milk shakes are phenomenal! And the burger are excellent! They don’t have lettuce for the burgers but still taste amazing!
There is a reason this place has the reputation it does. 10/10 cannot be beaten. In terms of a place to grab a real home style burger, nothing compares to this family owned burger joint in Scarborough. 50 years of serving some of the best quick eats the East end can offer. I highly recommend the banquet burger.
Johnny's Hamburgers is an long standing icon in the food scene in Scarborough.
There is nothing fancy or fashionable here, this is NOT the place to look for "gourmet" hamburgers. There is only simple good old-school charbroiled hamburgers for takeout.
The menu is basic, quite classic but, overall, the food is good with reasonable portions and value; and, they're open late.
This is my extremely biased rating. Grew up close by and have fond memories of stopping here after bar/club nights as well as lunches. A friend lives walking distance so we still go pretty often. Yes, other local places have great food too but you can taste the nostalgia at Johnnys lol Get the Banquet burger and make sure you request "bacon well done", be ready to spring to the counter when your order number gets called (I have been rudely awakened from my 2am post bar bench slumber by the sounds of HEY NUMBER 21 WAKE UP!) and of course time your visit well because it gets slammed at dinner times and late night on traditional bar nights. (Photo taken 7pm on a Saturday preCovid)
This place is a Toronto Landmark for a reason. Don’t expect anything gourmet but just a consistently great experience every single time and it never fails. Fan Favourites, Pork Souvlaki on a bun, Banquet Burger, Fries Gravy and the Onion Rings are all winners in my books
Been coming here for over 20 years, excellent burgers, fries and onion rings. They have changed the beef over the years but only to keep the prices low. Overall great quality for these prices. I can't speak on the other items as I only purchase cheese burgers, fries, poutine and onion rings.
Burgers are good and fries are good as well. Not as oily as I thought they would be. The burger was moist, but one bun was quite hard and dry. The topping selection is typical and that is a good thing, as sometimes you just want a burger with the minimal fixings. I thought the service was fast and friendly. They haven't changed in decades and there is nothing wrong with that. It's nostalgia.
Nothing fancy or extra ordinary. But kind of scarborough thing which last for more than 50years. CASH ONLY. They have a ATM machine inside just in case.
Lives up to the rep, IMO. Limited options, cash only. Worth going out of your way to pop in here at least once.
I had the banquet burger with the works. It was one of the best “hole in the wall” no-frills banquet burgers I’ve had. Everything tasted fresh; the bacon was a nice balance of chewy and crispy; the patty was perfectly cooked; and the toppings didn’t overpower the flavour.
Don’t come here expecting some gourmet foodie experience. That’s not the gig. It’s an affordable, well-portioned, get-in-get-out, no-bs local burger joint.
If you’re looking for some bougie artisanal meal with locally sourced ingredients to pair with your small batch craft beer, head down to Queen West and enjoy your $30 sandwich.
Wasn't the tastiest burger ever but it was cheap and a big burger. $6 for a burger and drink so not bad. It is cash only and no free refills on the beverages. The cashiers and cooks were friendly and you can see how your burger is made so that's cool.
I've been here quite a few times over the years. Their burgers are alright. No charbroil taste. Toppings are okay but no lettuce. The fries are decent. Good prices. But it's not great. Would rather eat Wendy's down the street
Johnny's serves "old school" hamburgers at a reasonable price. If your'e looking for gourmet burgers go elsewhere. This is the type of burger joint many of us grew up with. There are similar places like Johnny's all over the Toronto.
I had a very nice experience at Johnny’s Hamburgers. Everyone was nice, had to stand in the line for a bit, but it’s worth it. The hamburger itself is big and very tasty, I felt full for half of the day. However, I wish their fries were more tasty. Overall, nice experience and good deals.
It's a toss up for the best burger in Toronto - Johnny's, The Real McCoy or Jumbo Burger. Can't pick one, they're all great. Been coming here for as long as I can remember and never disappointed.
Johnny's Burgers has been a Scarborough staple long since I was born, and used to be a repeat hangout for Mike Myers, the absolute legend of a man who lent his talents to cinema hits such as Wayne's World, Shrek, and Austin Powers.
From a quick outside glance, Johnny's stands out as an everyman's food joint which has stubbornly refused to give in to the pressures of changing times and tastes. Even Fairy Freeze at Caledonia has caved in to the demands of the 21st century crowd and shed its old 60's diner look in favor of a less-tired but far bleaker "Five Guys Ripoff" style. Another oldschool chow joint bites the dust, and Toronto loses another piece of its history.
But no, not Johnny's. Johnny's remains an unapologetically bright and ostentatious monument of construction-orange paint and neon lights, and it leaks 70s vibes about as much as a beat-up hippie Kombi leaks oil. Really, the only thing missing is some speakers blaring some Bee Gees/Steely Dan/Men at Work, girls in summer dresses, and a series of 1970's autos lined up front. And maybe more neon.
Got inside? The oldschool vibes continue. Everything is either tile, wood, or mirror, and it feels like the 70's are about to serve you The People's Elbow at any time. Johnny's crew is proud of their joint's history - and the photos, news clippings, autographs, certificates nailed all over the place underline that. Did I mention that Johnny's is not a fancy schmancy place? In here, you pay for the burgers, not for the ambiance.
The crew? Quirky, humorous Greeks. One guy looks like a well-groomed Viking. The senior supervisor looks like he belongs in a a Francis Coppola movie. They work like a well-oiled machine, with lots of good humor flying around. The wait times are adequate for a place that still cooks in real-time and doesn't pre-prep patties and such.
One thing that's noticeable from the get go. No lettuce. Johnny's just doesn't do lettuce. Never has. It's even stated on the menu screens. Then there's the regular stuff. The tomatoes seem to never disappoint, even though Ontario tomatoes are usually horrifyingly bland. The pickles have a good crispiness-juiciness ratio. The onions are chopped up nicely and don't sting.
Their special burger topper is a seemingly unending supply of pan-fried onions, which, when combined with the Macgregors patties (some of the best resto style patties, in my opinion; Macgregors know their meat game) and the lightly toasted buns, create a simple and wholesome burger that will stay on your mind long after it goes inbetween your chompers.
And their stuff is cheap, too. Can't get a juicy, flavorful, wholesome banquet burger for $5- in too many places nowadays. Ain't that sad, though. More power to Johnny's.
All I'm all, Johnny's is an interesting place to be in. It's a way to step back in time and get a quick history lesson while waiting in line for a quick and tasty bite. It's a part of Toronto's history, and most importantly, it's an honest good splurge for mere peanuts in change.
Always a solid choice for a quick grub! Takes me about 30 seconds to hoover the ample sized burger! The staff is stern and straightforward to keep the busy flow running but respectful. One of the only places that aren't delusional about their prices. True essence of bang for buck! Didn't make 5 stars because they only take cash, minor inconvenience but overall does not disappoint!
Great family owned business that has stood the test of time and compeition.
I don't visit often, but when I do I'm treated as a regular. The food is always what I expect and the price beats out all the competition, including the multinational, multi-billion dollar heavyweights.
Johnny's is highly recommended and a Scarborough institution
I don't often write 5 star reviews but the longevity of this Scarborough institution is a testament to how special this place is. The secret magical bun, makes the burger. Place has not changed throughout the years, A real throwback and authentic experience. Be sure to eat in the parking lot and get the onion rings.
The steak sandwich here is overlooked. The steak is thinly-sliced enough to make the steak chewable without resorting to power tools. Get it with extra cheese.
Service not warm and fuzzy but highly, almost robotically, efficient, which is good enough for me.
Tasty cheap food. You are rushed thru the whole process from start to finish, but in the end you get a tasty burger. Try it without all the extra toppings on it!
One of the best burgers in town. Going there since 1976. My family moved to NY City 30 yrs ago but they always make sure to eat Johnny hamburger when in town. Mathur's in Markham
I like the burgers here. But they have raised their prices a lot suddenly. Not sure if it they the beat value any more. I will certainly go there less.
Been coming for over 20 years! Moved to Brampton 3 years ago and missed the place.just went and still the same and the best! Some small upgrades but for the better! I do miss the old string of lights outside on the late Saturday nights.
Known this place for years. One of the staples of the neighbourhood area that the whole of the GTA knows about. Visited recently and got a blast from the past every time I visit this place. Only reason I am giving three stars is because even thought the food and everything is great, prices and everything is great. The new management runs the place overall not that great.
Used to come here regularly as a child. Prices haven't varied too kich, and Johnny himself is still serving. Quality has decreased a bit from the thick and juicy flame broiled burgers I recall but still one of the best burger joints around. Be prepared to wait a bit (over fifteen minutes) especially on a busy day, but totally worth it.
Johnny's is a true institution that's been around longer than McDonald's restaurants. Excellent burgers and fries and of course everything else on the menu. One of a kind and no franchise. That really shows you through all the difficult economic times over the years that this independent small take out only fast food restaurant would survive through all of that. Everyone knows Johnny's, love going whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
Ahhh.the burger joint of my youth. Sadly the burger patties have changed, but everything else has remained the same. Consistent and open late in Saturdays.
They have been around forever. Hamburgers and steak on a Kaiser and fries and onion rings Etc. They also have tons of different toppings. Definitely recommend.
