A shocking expérience going to the Kingsway Theatre yesterday afternoon to watch the Barbie movie at a matinee.
My friend and I arrived at the theatre at 3: 15 for a 3: 30 movie. The owner unlocked the door shortly after and walked away. Didn’t even open it or acknowledge the two of us.
We went to the counter to purchase our tickets and asked for a seniors. He advised us that they don’t offer a seniors rate and the price was 15.00. We did comment that Cineplex does and he immediately told us to go to Cineplex. We didn’t say anything and bought our two tickets.
I wanted some popcorn and asked him if it was made recently. He replied in an aggressive manner with “today”. I said well was it this morning or this afternoon and he yelled TODAY! He then proceeded to go into a rant about how the people in this neighbourhood are all privileged and arrogant and it is sick of it. He told us he didn’t want us in his theatre and would give us a refund. We told him we had both lived in this area our entire lives, been to the theatre many times and love supporting and do support local business.
He just kept yelling, reduced us to yelling and some profanity which really escalated the situation. We finally told him to give us a refund and we will never attend a movie at his theatre again. Once we received the refund, he put the alarm on until we left!
A truly shocking experience as we are both in our late sixties and in my entire life I have never experienced a confrontation like I did with the owner of the Kingsway Theatre.
During dinner we looked up the theatre reviews and realized there were horrible experiences like ours.
I would suggest boycotting the theatre, why would anyone support a business who clearly hates everyone who lives in the area.

Amazing oldskool theatre with all the features you love about those places and miss in huge-theatre-chains. They as well mix cocktails and if needed even bring them into the theatre. A great experience for kids as well, as most know movies only from those common factory-style complexes.

The theater definitely has "character" and I do appreciate that they play family movies. The gross pin-up girl images should really be removed (at the very least during the family movie showings). Kids don't need to be exposed to those images. I'm sure there are other "retro" images that could be used instead. It is cold - so definitely keep your winter coat on. You'll need to find paid street/lot parking about $1.50/30 min.
