I was "totally ripped off" at this hair studio. I went for a wash and treatment of my natural hair and to have a relatively short wig that I had previously purchased styled. The cost of these services were not communicated to me in advance. I was simply presented with an invoice for $411 for 2 hours of work. This makes no sense to anyone that I have shared my experience with. I really like to support "black businesses" but I hate feeling oppressed or ripped off by them. I feel obliged to share my experience with others who may be thinking of having their hair done at Kinks. Beware of the exhorbitant prices.

I just couldn’t believe the transformation that my hair has after visiting Kinks hair salon. Marva you are a miracle worker! She is one of the best hairstylists I ever encountered. My hair looks and feels brand new again. Thank you so much for taking your time to treat my damaged hair. The products are amazing and can’t wait to have them all. I highly recommend for everyone to try these incredible products. Thank you again and see you soon

This place ruined my hair and life! I have been growing out and maintaining my hair all my life and for the first time ever I decided to make a change and get a balayage. Carol turned my hair into a total disaster, with a mix of yellow, blonde, orange and red. I look horrendous. When I expressed my disappointment to her, she replied with “it is what it is. ” I am so shocked and devastated and have been struggling for the past week to find someone to agree to fix my hair. It was a total waste of money (total of $181) and completely damaged my hair. I recommend EVERYONE to stay away.

Can you believe they cancelled my appointment after being early 18 minutes and waiting for an additional 23 minutes after my appointment time at 12pm. Called at 9: 54am to confirm my appointment for extension twists at 9: 55am, again at 10: 19am and lastly 11: 16am. All 3 phone conversations were mere hours away from my appointment, which no one once mentioned I was unable to be given a service.when they mentioned it, it was infront of a crowd of 6 people! No one offered a different service only to come the next day, which i was unable to. I took a vacation day from work to get my hair done by Kinks. I spent 54$ on hair 65$ for deposit fees- no one mentioned that I would not be charge my deposit. My first time with this place and cannot believe the way I was treated not only as a first time customer, but as someone who was on time, made all the right updates with salon only for them to tell me another person walked in earlier than me.so pretty much if you don't have a 9am appointment you can have your appointment canceled. Camille was supposed to be my stylist- she took the client who "booked, but also walked in earlier than me". Camille not once made eye contact with me or to apologize, instead, she had Patrich do the dirty work. Clearly Camille knew this client bcz she was smirking the whole time hearing this.friends will get placed before paying customers here. I can't believe it. I have no words the disgust I feel. Out $65- all because I made an appointment and didn't walk-in.

This was my second visit to this salon in a few years and due to the first experience I had, I thought it would have been a good idea to go back but I was completely wrong. I booked a layered cut and perm ($180+), even provided a picture and the lead stylist (Patrich) assured me more than once she could give me the style. Instead, I left the salon with a haircut from the 1990s and to make matters worst, I have to go somewhere else to have my cut fixed. I am so disappointed in the service and the lack of professionalism that I will never go back! The service is too expensive for a job not done properly!

I dont normally leave reviews but this place was just terrible. The workers are not educated on my hair condition Seborrheic dermatitis and provided a "scalp treatment" that caused a flare of the next day it was worse than it was when i came in. I rather you be honest and tell me you know nothing about it. Poor customer service and they are all about the money ended up paying over $200 for a wash scalp treatment perm and press. SAVE YOUR MONEY. If i could give 0 stars i would.

I ordered a few products from the salon and the day I receive the products, the owner texted me asking me about the products which I have not tried it as yet which I found it very strange. I asked a few questions and I did not get a response. It speaks volume about this business and I did get a hair wash done, however be careful because they over charge you. Very disappointed that my questions did not get answered.

Great experience, great service. I will be going back for sure.
Very happy with my new hair cut

The fact that you have to pay a deposit and sign off on pricing at the beginning of your appointment says enough. Customer service and value

Words cannot begin to explain how much I love this Salon. I went to get a silk press for the first time and I had a wonderful experience from the second I stepped in. They were so caring with my hair and kept nice conversation. The next day my silk press reverted back because it touched water and I was so sad. When I called the salon, Martha offered to touch it up for me for no cost. She went above and beyond for me and it’s something I will never forget. Shoutout to Martha with her hands of silk and to all the hairdressers who made me feel special. I will definitely be coming back!

Beautiful experience. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Came in feeling one way, left feeling like a new woman. Loving my natural hair?
28 February 2021 10:34
My girl LOVES going here. Marva is so talented and makes her feel so special. She always comes out grinning ear to ear! Tonight we cut her hair shorter than we ever have and it looks AMAZING! Thanks Marva!
22 February 2021 19:44
Friendly and professional staff. The studio is clean and run efficiently. Marva and her team are amazing
02 February 2021 19:46
Sooooo happy I found this salon. My hair is on point, so many compliments. I love the salon and the team is professional, knowledgeable and courteous. Amazing experience, phenomenal team!
01 February 2021 21:20
When dealing with natural kinky hair you have to be gentle. I was recommended to get a chemical treatment to make my hair more manageable. (Sounds like hypocrisy to me) if you’re bold enough to have kinks in the name of your business then have employees who know how to deal with kinks and appreciate them. Furthermore no one in the salon had any ‘kink’ to their hair
15 March 2020 9:31
Great experience. Did research on a lot of natural hair salons in Mississauga/peel area and Kinks was the stood out the most. They are the real deal for hair care, hair revival, hair love. You name it and they got you (Except sister locs lol). They also have a great line of their own products. Very talented stylist, nice atmosphere with no gossip or drama. Love love love it here. 100/10 experience. Btw I am going on 3 weeks with my silk press. Wrap it every night as advised by Marva and it is still fabulous
09 March 2020 7:16
Love this place! Decided to switch hairdressers for me and my children, and this place exceeded my expectations. I especially appreciated the care, explanation and suggestions that were given. They treat your hair as of they are doing their own hair
02 March 2020 6:02
Complete scammers! I started coming to Kinks Hair Studio because of how close and convenient the location was. However, I wish I had read the reviews before wasting my time and money. They are a bit on the pricey side but to me I don’t mind paying for quality. However I am very disappointed with their professionalism. I had asked the owner if they were able to do crochet locs since they focus more on natural hair styles. She had said yes that she had a team of braiders who were able to perform those hair styles. After booking my appointment and after a total of $195 service charge later I was very disappointed and annoyed. Firstly let’s break down the cost I had to spend. I had bought a total of 6 packs of crochet locs which cost me about 65 bucks because they were about $10 each. Paid 30 dollars for a terrible braid pattern (instead of single cornrows from front to back, the braider did a circle which left my edges looking ratchet and exposed in the end. I could not even tire my hair up without my cornrows being exposed. You would think with six whole packs she would have concentrated on covering my edges the most). It took a total of 3 hours in which they charge $45 an hour (with tax) just to tie crochet braids into my head. I was also informed that the lady who did the crochet was working there as her placement. Anyways.long story short let’s just say after two days I had to remove the crochet from my head because of how terrible it looked. If I’m paying 195 to get my hair done I should have it done professionally with care and honesty. Don’t lie to me and tell me that it “looks good” when clearly my facial expression shows I’m not satisfied. They basically let me leave their shop lying to me that my hairstyle looked good when in all honesty the hairstyle looked terrible. Moral of the story is I could have basically crochet my own head myself and gotten the same if not a better result. With all that being said I will not be returning anymore. I’d rather spend my money somewhere else where people care about how their clients look and not just trying to scam money out of them with ridiculous overcharges based on time and not quality. Ridiculous.

Thank you so much for your efforts and spending very valuable time on my hairs. I really appreciate the service you people have provided me. I wanted to get curls long time ago for my very natural straight hairs and but I wasn’t sure for the appropriate treatment. The owner lady motivated me to achieve the final desired look.
They are bit pricey but definitely worth it. I would recommend this place to all people out there looking to have wonderful service.
Thank you so much once again.

I have been flat ironing my hair for years and as a result was left with many different curl patterns. My entire perimeter was none straight despite having naturally curly hair. I made the decision 4 months ago that I would be transitioning; in that time I visited a curly salon downtown twice for treatments and trims.

On my last visit the stylist chopped off about 3 inches and told me to wait another 3 months because she wasn't comfortable doing the "big chop" for me because it was too drastic all at once. Needless to say I left the salon -$100 and very disappointed.

I waited 4 days and researched natural salons in my area that I could visit and I found Kinks. I called and booked my appointment for the next day; I explained my situation and they told me I would be well taken care of.

The next day I visited the salon with my best friend (for moral support) and was pleasantly greeted by the staff. I completed my consultation and was then put in the hands of the owner who did a PHENOMENAL job. She took the time to educate me on my hair and when I explained that I had reached a point of being comfortable with the "big chop" she was very supportive.

Before I knew it the cut was complete, she took extra care to guide me through every step of what she was doing and to reassure me that I looked beautiful and that I was going to love it. Once I was completely finished I was so relieved and so happy I couldn't help but cry and give her the biggest hug.

Having long hair my entire life I was beyond nervous but she made me feel beautiful. I felt very comfortable with her and that night I surprised my boyfriend for his birthday and he could not believe how great it looked.

It has now been 2 weeks and I have to say I have never felt more confident and more beautiful. I want to thank the Kinks staff but especially the owner for taking such great care of me. I am due for another touch up in a few weeks and I am very much looking forward to going back.

Great atmosphere, Kinks stylist know what they are doing when it comes to my hair and I love the way the owner and senior stylist ensures she and her staff are up to date on scalp/haircare.
23 September 2019 6:19
Came to get a curl define and treatment and this is what I left with. $118 dollars later. The products they use are cheap and the stylist have no idea what they are doing. My hair is so dry! The stylist scrunched the treatment into my hair oppose to running it through and then sat me under a dryer. At salons that specialize in natural curly hair I have never been sat under a dryer for treatments always a steamer to actually seal in the moisture since curly hair is already dry! She then proceeded to apply a wrap set foam as a "curl definer". Now my head looks like a matted mess and I'm out $118. After explaining my dissatisfaction I was still charged full price. Robbers. This salon does not specialize in curly hair textures and should not advertise as such. In 2019 this needs to change. Will not come back and do not recommend. I could have done a better job at home with $20.
18 September 2019 18:09
Dishonest and shockingly unprofessional

Beware! You will be charged $30 for an unpleasant encounter with an aggressive and hostile person. I was charged $25 for a 3 minute discussion and denied the service I booked because I politely declined to provide the owner with sensitive personal information including my date of birth and home address which is oftentimes used in identity theft schemes.

As disturbed as I was by my experience at this salon, I am really grateful it happened very early into my appointment because I shudder to think how much worse this could have gone.

I heard about this salon from my sister who had never been there herself but had been told of it by a workmate as an option since she was looking for a new salon closer to her home. My sister was a bit skeptical given the online reviews, as was I, but I forged ahead because I know reviews can sometimes be unfair.

I made an appointment to have my hair cut in a shorter hairstyle. I was told by the receptionist that my credit card would be charged a $30 fee in advance of my appointment and the money would either be applied to the cost of my service, or if I was late for my appointment, charged as a late fee. I was a bit skeptical about this but was encouraged since I took this as an obvious sign that they take punctuality seriously.

I arrived on time for my appointment and was seated (for 45 minutes!). While I waited I was asked to complete an initial consultation form. Strangely, the form asked for quite a bit of personal information including my date of birth and home address which I of course did not provide.

I was finally invited by someone I believe is the owner to come to the service area. From the outset I found her energy to be strangely aggressive but I brushed it off. I showed her three pictures of hairstyles I was considering and we discussed them for exactly 3 minutes. We very quickly agreed on the style I was going to go with. It was at that point that she turned to me and said she needed me to complete the consultation form. I very politely advised her that I don’t usually provide my date of birth and home address. In response she said she would not be able to serve me if I didn’t provide this information. To say I was confused by this is an understatement. Understanding the implications of providing sensitive personal information to individuals that clearly do not need it, i again very politely declined. It’s at this point she told me should would not be able to cut my hair. While stunned I accepted this and told her I would need to be reimbursed the $30 I had paid in advance. She then told me the exactly 3 mins conversation we had (mind you after a 45 minute wait on my part) would cost me $25 and I would be reimbursed $5.

I’ve gone on long enough about this but I felt it was important to be clear about how this woman conducts herself and her business and the fact that if you choose to ignore this review and book an appointment with this salon, you risk wasting your time and your money. I will of course tell everyone I know including my sister and her workmates. I hope that $25 sustains this woman’s business for years to come.

I have natural hair and went to get a wash and twist. The ladies are friendly and nice and so was my hairdresser. The lady that was detangeling and twisting my hair was rough when she was doing my hair.
I'm not sure I would go back.
10 August 2019 8:50
I normally wouldn't post a, bad review but I have no choice here. The only good thing they do with natural hair is to flat iron it. The stylist we had thought a trim should mean cut a quarter of your hair. She was supposed to define natural curls, but she couldn't even be bothered to try styling or parting hair different ways to see what was suitable or looked good with your face. Plus they are expensive. Tell you on their website they value your time and ask that you value theirs and show up on time or you will be charged. Big crock when you wait for over an hour for an initial consultation which lasted 8 minutes with the stylist whispering to you and then you are charged $25! Todays appointment was $118 and change. I couldn't even tip I was so upset with the results. Even the receptionist could see the disappointment on my face and she was kind of embarrassed to ask for payment. The stylist herself didn't even ask me what I thought. We came home and had to fix it ourselves. Extremely disappointed. Worst money spent.

I love coming to this place. My hair has never felt better! The staff are amazing and very welcoming. I highly recomend this hair salon.

Kinks is wonderful hair studio and spa. The staff are all skillful, knowledgeable and polite. Every visit is a pleasant experience.
23 June 2019 12:59
I heard and saw the great work that this black-owned business is doing in Toronto's GTA. Wow! I highly recommend.
17 June 2019 13:12
May I say the Receptionist was very pleasant.
My first impression of the owner was that she came across obnoxious. The loctician had no clue what she was doing, wasn't able to properly interlock my hair. She kept on whispering to me in fear of upsetting the owner's strict rules of self expression. Stylist took double the usual time (Keep in mind they charge by the hour). If you prefer being around good energy, this is not the place for you.

As an entrepreneur who likes to support black businesses, I've observed that some of us still struggle with professionalism. Overall, poor service for price range. Will not go back.
16 June 2019 15:05
ALL of these reviews are people that have been to this salon for the first time. The first time you go there they treat you like royalty. I have been going to KINKS for 3 years and I realized quickly overtime that once they realize they "got you" and you're a regular customer they do NOT provide the same quality of service. I have stopped going because of this. What would usually take me a 2 hour trip to the salon soon turned into SIX HOURS! They constantly let other clients go ahead not to mention they thinned out my hair SEVERELY. And of course whenever I brought this to their attention they always had a way of twisting it and making it seem like its my fault and it was something I was doing. Not to mention the prices are outrageous. She dusted my hair (literally cut 3cm's off) and charged me 40 dollars for a haircut! Just a wash and style will run you close to $160 not to mention they are constantly trying to shove their products down your throat. GO AT YOUR OWN RISK!
03 June 2019 19:34
I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS LONG BUT PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO GO TO KINKS HAIR STUDIO

As a 'natural hair' salon you are in the work of decolonizing years of oppression and repression regarding 'black' hair this salon can make you reconsider going back to perm!

When I first entered the shop it looked very professional, the floors and the individual work stations were very plausible. However, I was greeted with a harsh welcome by the receptionist who hardly smiled at me. Now, I'm used to receptionists who hate their jobs, whether that'd be doctors offices and public services who hate their jobs which translates to people skills.

Moving on, this is the worst hair experience that I have encountered up to date. Firstly? In order to create a good rapport with new clients, it is crucial that there is open communication between both the client and stylist. The stylist I had proceeded to add the treatment into my hair. She told me all that was going to be done to my hair and I asked her the ingredients that were in the products she stated "all the products were online and that I couldn't find the ingredients anywhere else. " I thought she was joking smirked and let it slide. After the conditioner she added a leave in conditioner and I asked again what she was putting specifically in my hair she stated that all the products were online which I did and to my surprise THERE WERE NO INGREDIENTS ONLINE nor were they on the physical bottle she presented in person. This was a huge problem to me because it displayed that Kinks hair Studio;

1. Didn't can't about the hair education of their clients because many clients are particular and sensitive about their ingredients in the products that they are putting in their hair.
2. Was solely motivated by the business aspect of their salon

While she was washing my hair I was completely soaked. This stylist had no professionalism. Countless times I wiped my face but she always failed to prevent the water from soaking my face and shirt by using her hand as a guard like other hair salons I had previously been at. She gave me towels but it baffled me how a stylist who claimed to have 20+ years in the hair industry was content with this level of unprofessionalism. I left with my back and turtleneck COMPLETELY SOAKED.

Moving on, I had initially mentioned to the stylist that I was coming in and had just removed a protective style. Through out the entire process she kept on SHAMING my hair by stating harmful comments. At this point I was confused because AS BLACK WOMEN THIS SHOULD BE A SPACE WHERE WOMEN CAN COME IN WITH THIER HAIR IN ANY STATE unfortunately this salon isn't that place.

Blow Drying

When blow drying my hair, the CORRECT WAY TO BLOW DRY NATURAL HAIR is to start from the ends and work your way to the root however, this stylist proceeded to brush forcefully through my natural 4C hair with a hard wooden brush in large amounts and didn't section my hair. She burned my scalp numerous times because she wasn't paying attention to how long she left blow dryer in one area of my head.

While she was straightening my hair, the team was looking for a specific straightener however they couldn't find it. I believe they used an inadequate straightener because when I went home my hair became puffy in the next 3 hours. My hair looked moderately nice when it was done however it could've been better. She also stated that I had hair in places on my face and neck that I shouldn't have. She then began to cut off my hair with a clipper and at this point I was so exhausted and confused should've left right at that moment.

In the end, after the hair was done, she stated LOUDLY that I shouldn't come in to the salon again with my hair looking 'jing bang and 'chakka chakra' which made me very insecure as I had already explained to her that I had just taken out a protective style. I was very embarrassed and grieved at the lack of respect that I received from this salon by this unprofessional, uninviting, Trini woman.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to this salon period!

I love kinks! I went to them to big chop my hair, I was so pleased with the new hairstyle, I literally cried. I love how they encourage you to embrace your kinks, thank you guys!

I'm so super delighted with with my hair. Marva is really so marvelous. Thanks to you and your amazing team, who treat customers hair with great care, patience and professionalism. I'm so happy with my hair and my family and friends love it as well. I highly recommend this salon to everyone. Thank you guys! Geraldine.

Just got a hair cocktail, cut and curl and define treatment today with Marva and i cannot be more excited with the results! Everyone I interacted was incredibly friendly and lovely and had such lovely personalities. The salon itself is very bright and clean and fully equipped. I definitely recommend Kinks to anyone with curly hair. Marvel did a lovely job of moisturizing and rejuvenating my curls! She is extremely skilled and her hands worked like magic on my hair. Kinks has definitely gained another customer in me, I plan on recommending this place to all my family and friends with curly hair!

My one and only salon since I was 10 years old. My mother and I would spend hours straightening my hair when I was young. Kinks took us in and completely changed my life. I am now 24 and I am so grateful for them every single day. A lot has changed over the years but they always prioritize customer service and they really do care for my hair. I would recommend this place for any girl who is struggling with how to mange her hair. You will learn so much. However you want to wear it- curly, straight, or in between, you'll leave this salon with a HUGE smile on your face. Thank you for everything Marv.

I loved it here! It's so hard to find someone to take care of my mixed hair curls. My hair feels so healthy and the ladies are so nice. The place was super clean and just a great atmosphere. This is my new place from now on to get my hair treated.

Worst money I have ever spent. Ladies dont do it.

The woman who did my hair should not be a natural hair stylist. Plus its sad to say that as I sat there I was watching the other clients with their stylist and I didnt see anything to say WOW about.

One stylist took like an hour to put some sad cornrows in a clients head. Thankfully she covers her hair and no one buy her husband will see it.

So I went into the salon with heat damage from flat ironing and was conflicted about whether to big chop again or see if treatments would help. Should have took my 100plus dollars and go to Clore. The stylist spoke to me as if I have never seen my hair before and I have never styled it myself. I dont usually say much because I like to observe and read people.

I left looking a bigger mess than I did when I went in. With straight ends and no curl definition although I paid for a service that is called curl definer. I paid and left I can see why they make you sign to confirm the price. Then they say no tip. AS IF. Who is tipping. I feel like the good reviews on here about this place must be by women who know no better.

Any how. Ladies dont do it.

The Manager called me at 12noon the next day to instigate a fight. So please know that your customer service complaints or service complaints will not be heard.

Marva is fantastic! She’s brought my hair back to health when it was at its worst. She knows exactly what to do with it, I trust her because she doesn’t lead me to a wrong path.
I just wish I didn’t have to wait in the car for someone to open the place on time.
27 October 2018 8:41
Horrible experience. I’m really disappointed with this establishment considering the reviews it has. I’ve been looking for a salon that I could go to on a regular basis and my very first experience here was a mess, unprofessional, emabarassing and treatment I received was rude not to mention a waste of my time. I definitely would NOT recommend. Crazy thing is if the owner actually took the time to call me back after my experience I wouldn’t have even wrote this comment because I am a huge advocate for small businesses. Customer experience is what drives business ladies.

I have struggled with stylists for years and actually gave up on going to a salon. I had not received a cut in 2 years. Kinks was recommended to try and I can honestly the experience I had there was Fantastic. I was welcomed immediately and all the Staff were friendly, polite and made me feel comfortable being there. I was treated like a queen. The owner was just fabulous and did a super job on my hair, cut properly and now it looks healthy and great. Curly hair is struggle and it appears that the best place to go is Kinks. I have made this my forever salon. They have the experience of curly hair and the service is great. I honestly can't say enough great things about Kinks and the entire team!
18 September 2018 19:55
Dissapointed. I thought I found a quality salon that knew what they were doing with my type of hair. The silk press was alright but nothing I couldn't have done at home. I asked for SUBTLE highlights. The consultation that I was supposed to have consisted of telling me how much it generally would cost. We didn't discuss colours, or anything. I did show a picture but she didn't look too much at that. When she was applying the colour, it looked alright. When she washed it out, I wanted to burst into tears. She had given bright blonde chunky highlights. She said she was going for a "dramatic effect". So much for subtle. It looks ok when I wear my hair down, but when I wear my hair up or in a bun, I look like I walked straight out of 2007. Incredibly dissapointed considering they charged me $346. They have no idea what they are doing when it comes to colour practice. Can't wait for 6 weeks to pass so I can get my hair corrected, and I can forget about this as quickly as possible. NOT a good experience at all.

Sorry I won't be back.ever. But you're welcome for speaking with you on the phone. Hopefully you can train your staff a bit more with colour technique! Good luck to you.

I am giving it 2 stars because I've had a past experience with the vegan smoothing treatment that was a good experience and because the hospitality was really good and my stylist was sweet. Despite this, frankly I am upset and cried when I got home because I asked for a trim to try and keep the length and just give me a little shape and got a complete cut that is uneven in places and very afro-like. I asked for a few hair tendrils in front for bangs and when I said I thought it was too much hair being cut for it, it was suggested that any less wouldnt look good so I trusted the stylist.

The first pictures I've attached are what my hair looked like 2 weekends prior and the next one's are after this trim, both when fresh out of the shower and then dried while stretching/pulling on the curls with the diffuser

The reason I've given 2 stars is because the treatment they did was good and they recognized that I was unhappy with my trim and returned the cost of the trim the following day when I came in to request it. Up
