Laywine's

Purchased a Lamy fountain pen that began malfunctioning after a few months. The pen fails to dispense ink unless manually pushed it, which is quite frustrating. Such issues shouldn't occur with a pen that costs three hundred plus.

Was hesitant to post this but saw a few other reviews of a similar nature so figured it was worth sharing.

Visited the shop to pick up an order and didn't feel particularly welcome. Was completely ignored for about the first five minutes.

Eventually got some help when an employee came out of the back to greet a different customer that had just entered the store. Even then I had to approach/get his attention.

Admittedly, I am not a regular, and the other customers in the store seemed to be based on the tenor of the conversations, but it kind of made me feel like I was intruding on a meeting of a private club or something.

I saw a few other reviewers express that they've "lost their business" because of similar treatment in the past, and I'm definitely not there yet, but I'm left a bit jarred as I normally am treated quite well when I visit. They did lose the option of a additional sale beyond the web pickup today as I had a few small things I wanted to grab, but decided to forgo that based on how I was treated.

This makes me sad to post. I have great affection for the shop, as I got my very first fountain pen there. Hope today was an anomaly and not a new norm.

The staff members are very pleasant and knowledgeable and love to help, and the pens and other stationary are classy and suit all budgets. I regrettably forgot to ask the lady who helped us today about her name to thank her personally here. I did not make a significant purchase but felt as if I were the only customer at the shop. I will make sure to visit Laywine's each time I am in Toronto, and will certainly shop on their website.

Went in to get some inks. The service was not very welcoming. Lack of attention from the staff for a good bit, but when received, it was not similar to the treatment other patrons in the store were receiving. Seems to have a good selection of products, but based on my previous experience, I do not feel inclined to return.

Placed an order online & received my package in the mail just two days later, beautifully packed, with a hand written note. Love it.

I purchased both blackwing sharpeners they had. I also purchased the blackwing pencils. Only Canadian place to have them, other than a big online store, that is American. I shopped Canadian and glad I did. I received a lovely handwritten note with my purchase. I will look to Laywine's for future purchases. Thanks everyone.

First time visiting Laywine's. It's a rite of passage for people who love their fountain pens. I did not purchase anything that would have broken the bank today and I was still afforded exceptional service. I stopped by today to purchase Kaweco cartridges in person. Lots of colours and Peter looked after me with great kindness and professionalism. Will return when I have used up all the ink that I bought today

Just purchased from Laywine’s online store. Highly recommend. They have my favourite notebooks you cannot find anywhere else in Canada. I used to buy from my college (UBC Vancouver) and they don’t sell them anymore. I discovered that Laywine’s had them at an even cheaper price, including the shipping fees? ! When I need something I’ll always search here first before looking anywhere else!

I bought my first Filofax planner from Laywines more than twenty years ago and have been coming back for all my stationery needs. The customer service is exceptional - Peter and the team are lovely, knowledgable and very patient. My recent purchase was a mechanical pencil and pen with a gel refill and as usual, I left very happy!

I am BEYOND GLAD about finding Laywine's! Today I received my second order in as many months; four bottles of Iroshizuku ink that I was eager to try! Sonia, thank you for the obvious care that you took to package my order, from the quality padded envelopes for the bottles, the confetti and tissue packaging paper.and the thoughtful note! I have already ordered a few times with Laywine's, and they have never let me down. Everything were well-packaged and shipped out in a fair amount of time! I placed an online order with Laywine's and received an email shortly after letting me know that one of the items I had selected was out of stock. I was able to pick a different colour and the issue was quickly resolved. Their customer service was lovely and I particularly appreciated that my order (which, by the way, arrived very quickly even though I had chosen the free shipping option) came with a personalized note.

I always make it a point to drop in when I'm in the area, as there's usually something I find that I never realized I needed. A great local source for Snow & Graham and Good Morning calendars, as well as letterpress greeting cards. So glad the store is open again for browsing- online just isn't the same.

Friendly and helpful staff! For a newbie like me to the world of fountain pens they still provided great advice and guidance despite the, frankly, fancy location and more opulent options available. Plan on returning!

An excellent stationary store with a very well curated selection. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. They were able to help me find a refill cartridge for a vintage pen which I was unable to source elsewhere.

Despite my wishes to go to the store and pick up what I needed, the pandemic prevented me from doing so, and I had to order online. Regardless, I had a wonderful shopping experience; the website was beautifully crafted, the items had detailed descriptions, and checkout was seamless. I really appreciated the wide choice of delivery options, which really gave me the ability to balance delivery speed and cost. My package arrived swiftly, with a thoughtfully signed note from Peter. This was my first time buying from Laywine’s, and it certainly won’t be my last.

Such amazing customer service! I purchased a fountain pen with a converter (same brand) online. They reached out to inquire if I was going to use the converter with the pen. They then let me know that because of changes the converter would not work with that model of pen. Not every proprietor would actually care, and then let me know about that! It was appreciated. I have shopped here occasionally over the years, but will make an effort to shop locally here more in the future.

Today I drove from Oakville today to get a refill for my favorite Lamay Pen.
Disappointed that I was unable to go in the store and buy it. The provincial and city rules are not being applied fairly. Why cause hardship for an independent hard working small retailer when big box stores are crowded and no doubt causing spread of the virus?

This has been my goto for fine stationary products for a long time! Great customer service.highly recommended

Best stationary store in Toronto in my opinion. Every item seems perfectly curated. Curb-side pick up was flawless.

This is one of my favourite places in the city! I'm a uni student, and it's really easy for upscale places to make young people feel unwelcome, however, Peter (the owner and the sweetest man alive) took so much time to help me find a beautiful product in my budget and to make me smile when I was having a really bad day! You can tell how passionate the owner is, and he is really one of the most wholesome and kind people that I've met! Peter was so lovely that when he picked out this ruler for me it felt so special that I bought it just to keep it as a reminder that there are beautiful, kind and helpful people in the world. I bring it to every exam to keep me calm - Peter gave me a good luck charm that I will cherish forever! <3

I am a fountain pen collector. If you are into fine writing instruments and exquisite writing paper, this is the shop to visit.

Never been to this store (yet) but, I loved the ad I saw on YouTube for it. The owner seems like such a nice guy and I hope this review helps his business, even a little.

I love Laywine’s! Beautiful store, selection, knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had a pen repaired here; they took meticulous care of it. I also love their paper selection.

Visited this store today and Frank was a great help. He helped me decide on the type of fountain pen I should buy and allowed me test some nibs and paper. Very happy with my purchases and will definitely be back.

All the times i've been there, it's mostly a small shop that lets you take your time look through stuff, try out the pens.chat about pen related stuff. Best of all: IMO - Their after sales service is top notch. I can always buy most pens and paper online, like on amazon or something and ask questions on forums - the after sales and trying stuff out are the reasons I go to a physical store.

Peter was very helpful and patient while helping me choose a notebook for my fiance. The service was great and he is very happy with the product.

I came here because wonder pens was closed on a Monday, and I am really glad I did. Jonathan was so kind, showing me the different nib sizes and how they affect my writing on the pen that I was interested in. The experience here was relaxed and very charming. Highly recommended.

A nice quiet little pen shop with a great selection of fine writing instruments (fountain pens, rollerballs, etc) and fine paper stationery! There is also an amazing selection of fountain pen inks available. The price is good and the service is extraordinary. If you are looking for a writing instrument that will last you for a long time, the associates will be more than happy to match you with something in your price range. Be warned, fountain pens are an addiction.

Great options without seeking daunting, a friendly and well versed staff and a pleasant atmosphere make this a delightful shopping experience. Bought myself a German fountain pen and a Japanese paper notebook.

Mixed experience here, I've stopped in a couple of times now, and the service seems to be commensurate with how you are dressed. Similarly when I asked about lower end brands I was quickly dismissed. It's exciting to have a fountain pen store downtown, however it seems to be living up to it's Yorkville setting.
